Happy Pub Day to THE LIGHT EATERS by Zoë Schlanger! I was thrilled when @harperbooks sent me this gorgeous book. Though I don't read as much nonfiction, a book about the science of plant intelligence was way too tempting, and I did request it. This book has been a source of amazement to me. As a plant lover, I have been in awe of all manner of plant life for years, but never considered this aspect of "intelligence." I have heard of trees with root systems that transfer information, but this book took that and expanded the science far beyond. Absolutely readable in nature, I was riveted to learn while feeling a bit slack-jawed with the magic of it all. One of the thoughts I kept having was how we base our vocabulary of intelligence on humans. This is natural, but it is vastly limited when parts of creation are beyond our words. I loved this. I loved that we are still exploring and discovering new things about our world. It gives me a deeper sense of awe and wonder, as well as a deepening desire to care for this gorgeous planet. I do have to admit, on a silly note, that my earliest nightmare was about a tree reaching down to grab me, and now I am curious... Are you a green thumb? Do you wish we could understand the plant languages?

‘Entangled Mycorrhizae’ Looking through my roots, I am now entangled. This is a piece of writing I did when I was creating the sculpture: The bits of wool and wire have taken their own life form, into being. It is constantly being bent and reshaped with each part I sew and make, the long roots reaching out are getting caught in my mirror. It has outgrown my dressing table/ desk, my door frame is too narrow for it to pass through. Each day it changes and grows, the permanence is fleeting. It’s now knotted and woven inextricably linked. The new nursery is gradually taking shape ... taken delivery of almost 90 of my largest, oldest oaklings, which have been growing at Nicholsons Nurseries, North Aston, Oxfordshire for a few years. These are all from acorns I collected in 2015 and are now up to 4 or 5m tall. Many of these require some formative pruning and repotting, probably up into 90 litre pots. Of course these trees are looking for new homes to be planted out in the ground, but we also want to keep growing some on to large sizes, so we have some stock of very special trees for instant impact in the years to come. About 600 trees are now here at the new nursery, and another 400 or so will be delivered in the coming days. Then there is around 2 months of work to pot, train, feed, clip, weed, water and sing! All these trees are grown from veteran and ancient oaks of England, including one or two parent oaks likely to be over 1,000 years old. Flowers are a lifelong obsession for me. As a kid, my grandma, who shared this love and kindled it in me even stronger, would walk with me through residential streets and tell me the names of every flower she recognized. When my family got our first home PC, I'd find botanical encyclopedias online and scroll through the listings to devour new-to-me flowers for hours on end. I remember, too, imbibing the toxic, ambient, ridiculous message that "flowers are girly". Meaning: Superfluous, pointless, ephemeral, decorative, lightweight, unimportant. A nothing. As a smart, academically high-achieving kid, I needed to care about more durable things than flowers. (I look back and wonder how the hatred of women and girls burned so hot, so pervasive, in my world. So insidious, so normal.) And as it happens, I've thrown in my lot with all the "nothings" I love. Art, intuition, flowers, dreams, astrology, fantasy tales. Practically everything I love lives on the "nothing" side of the line in our patriarchally-mapped world. Here be dragons. The thing is, herbal elder Stephen Harrod Buhner taught that Plant Intelligence was here first. Plants are our ancestors, and we emerged from their morphic field. We're not anthropomorphizing when we think of a flower as a woman's reproductive and pleasure organs. *We* were the ones made in *their* image. Gaia modelled women after flowers. Vernal energy is flowing so sweetly now in the Northeast. All the plants are starting to emerge. Migratory birds, like my sweet friend turkey vulture, are returning to grace clear blue skies. The wind's tone has shifted with sharp and bitter to warm and enticing. Everyone is waking up, including me! I haven't posted much on my timeline. I tend to withdraw deeply in the winter. Cherishing the thoughts and messages that come to me and keeping them private. But I've had plenty of time to retreat and replenish, and I'm eager to share what's been inspiring me lately. Before I feel like I can let loose all the things that I've been dreaming up - I want to thank the beings that kept me grounded and nourished in the dark winter times. White Pine, pinus strobus, reached out from the depth of the dark forest of winter to teach me many lessons. I'm grateful for the evergreen wisdom that is available to us all in every season, bringing forth verdant and ancient teachings, which are so unlike the flamboyant and ephemeral lessons that spring flowers bring. Seeds - when I am getting ready to plant, I am always amazed how these little guys know what to do when they are planted.. and how abundantly they produce. These little guys are sunflower seeds - autumn beauty variety. Now just over half a centimetre they grow up to be 180cm tall.. Not sure of this kind but on average one sunflower head produces 1000-2000 seeds. Last Saturday we organised a Bracken Community Action in the Ashdown Forest! 🌳🌳🌳 We are exploring how a biodynamic preparation can play a role in managing invasive bracken fern. This solution works with the subtle intelligent forces in nature. It may sound like magic, but the ash of a fern, activated in water and diluted many times over, has already proven to reduce bracken and other invasive plants like ragwort very effectively! In 2024, it is no longer possible to use the herbicide Asulox to kill off the bracken fern. This is great news, but does not solve the legitimate probable of bracken replacing the precious heath. Heathland is a unique environment and allows for unusual birds like the nightjar, and the Dartford Warbler to thrive. The SSI status of the forest also relies on the presence of heath and these special bird species. Hans-Günther Kern is a biodynamic expert and has demonstrated the making of a bracken fern biodynamic preparation. Now it was time to spray this solution on a dedicated area in the forest, in collaboration with the Ashdown Forest country manager. Next steps will be to apply the solution a couple of times per year, and track changes the height of the ferns over time. You can see that bracken in this area has been thriving, the dead bracken from this winter is taller than Hans-Gunther himself! I get a lot of etheric information through hearing, it’s something I’ve experienced since I was a kid. I also see things sometimes, especially when I’m in the woods. . Can you feel / sense the presence, spirit of the plant, tree elder, even when you are not physically around them? Hawthorn + Elder have been supporting me for a while now, teaching me how to navigate endings, w grace. Carrying the medicine of sacred cycles of life / death / rebirth. Gateways into the world of spirit, underworld, where the medicine is. So much to say about these two but maybe about Elder in another post :) I wanted to share my little journey w Hawthorn today. I missed my stop on the bus and had to walk about 20 min to find my way back w all diversions going on and extreme winds lol. I could feel Hawthorn. Could feel her Magick, sense her medicine and hear her song. I said oh Hi Hawthorn, and continued walking. My consciousness shifted into the heart, where the language of plants can be truly heard. The closer I got to my final destination the more I could feel her presence, and then physically her scent, which is so very unique. Of course, she was there, blooming in all her glory, smiling back at me. I sat w her for a moment and felt this deep love. The wisdom of the heart that brought me up to this moment, the courage + strength to follow the hearts truth. Deep gratitude for more than human relatives that hold me so deeply. The clarity. Hawthorn, as spirit medicine holds the heart during times of loss, grief, heartbreak and emotional stress. Gatekeeper, guide and protector of the heart. She helps us settle our spirit and nourish + nurture heavy heart, supporting us in finding deeper love + compassion for ourselves. Hawthorn helps us transform deeply buried grief, resentment, heartache + heartbreak, restoring hope, love, trust + forgiveness, reminding us of our strength + resilience and medicine we carry, when we walk from our true hearts. A beautiful guide and teacher of loving + healthy emotional boundaries, which we can see this in her sharp thorns, as well as healing those wounds of the heart that keep us stuck in distrust and closed off. There is an intimate reciprocity to the senses; as we touch the bark of a tree, we feel the tree touching us; as we lend our ears to the local sounds and ally our nose to the seasonal scents, the terrain gradually tunes us in turn. The senses, that is, are the primary way that the earth has of informing our thoughts and of guiding our actions. Huge centralized programs, global initiatives, and other ‘top down” solutions will never suffice to restore and protect the health of the animate earth. For it is only at the scale of our direct, sensorial interactions with the land around us that we can appropriately notice and respond to the immediate needs of the living world. Yet at the scale of our sensing bodies the earth is astonishingly, irreducibly diverse. It discloses itself to our senses not as a uniform planet inviting global principles, but as this forested realm embraced by water, or a windswept prairie, or a desert silence. Greetings from the plant kingdom! 🌿 Here’s the first of my three installations that are currently on view at @villamerkel, Esslingen, Germany. For the exhibition ‘The Senses of Plants’, I developed a variation of the installation ‘Buni Buana’, this time it’s solely about the plant beings. 🌿 Buni Buana (Hidden World) natural elements collected from Indonesia and colours distilled or ground from them, glass, transparent acrylic paint, LED lights 2014-2015, dimensions variable Salonen collected various plant-based elements - leaves, pieces of bark, nutshells etc. - during her artist-in-residence in Java, Indonesia. From each element, the artist distilled or ground a colour sample onto a microscopic slide. In addition, she painted images of nature spirits on the slides with transparent paint. These painted spirits, related to the animist worldview, become visible only through their shadows, in this way revealing a hidden layer of nature’s reality. According to animism every single plant, rock and tree is inhabited by an active agency, possibly even a spiritual consciousness, which has the right to live regardless of its instrumental utility to human needs. 🌿 The group exhibition is curated by @juliakatharinathiemann and runs until the 2nd of June, 2024 with the featured artists; Anais-karenin, Marisa Benjamim, Suzette Bousema, Anca Bucur, María Castellanos & Alberto Valverde, Patricia Domínguez, Nicole L’Huillier, Špela Petrič, Elsa Salonen, Miriam Simun, Saša Spačal, Anton Vidokle and Zheng Bo. What do you know about the bergamot in your tea? 🔸You will know black tea mixed with the flavour of bergamot under the name Earl Grey tea. The sweet, citrus-like and bitter taste of bergamot has made this tea popular. 🔸Earl Grey tea is flavoured by spraying the black tea leaves with bergamot essential oils, or adding dried bergamot orange rinds to the tea blend. 🔸A whole host of health benefits have been attributed to Earl Grey tea, from reducing anxiety, heart health, and strengthening the immune system. However,most of these suggestions have not yet been proven by research. 🔸Earl Grey tea may be named after the 2nd Earl Grey (1764–1845). There are multiple theories and legends attempting to link the tea to the earl. Interestingly, the oldest mention found for Earl Grey tea was not until 1884 though. 🔸Adding bergamot to tea originally began to enhance the taste of low-quality teas. Printing these abstract art with Eucalyptus bark on fabric is not a trivial task: it is a complex multi-stage process of choosing the right bark, that the Eucalyptus trees offer freely, as they drop off their bark while recycling tannin in the ecosystem. Then comes washing, straightening and drying the bark in the sun. Preparing for the composition. Pre-treating the fabric and soaking in mordant that would allow the tannin in the bark to stay in the fabric and create a pattern of the print. Then steaming for several hours and when opening you never know the result. If the bark had good amount of tanning and the process was done correctly, the artwork will have an intense brown-gray-black toned print, complete with the pattern of the inside of the bark.
