One of my biggest fitness goals has been to understand and get better at teaching strength. Being a poli-sci/ voting rights girly by day meant that biomechanics and anatomy never came easy, but I was always fascinated by getting stronger and I knew I wanted to be more knowledgeable for my patrons. So when the opportunity came to go through bodypump training I knew it was time to take that next big leap and believe in myself. So through a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (especially over the lunge track😅) I pushed through the last two months and finally became a certified bodypump instructor! I am so grateful for all the wonderful BP instructors at UK who gave me tips and pep talks (especially @allisonkperry82 & @maddsatthegym ). Don’t get me wrong, I love gas station snacks as much as the next gal. On roadtrips, I always felt like I would need to grab all the sweet and salty snacks at gas stations. Vacations used to mean to me that could balls to wall and eat whatever I wanted. At the end of vacations, I would always feel bloated, sick to my stomach, and guilty about eating a bunch of “junk”. Fast forward to now, I know I struggle with consuming fiber especially veggies and fruit during vacations. I also know fiber will help me feel full, keep my bowels happy 😆 , and get other nutrients. I now pack some fruits and veggies on road trips that are already cut up and ready to eat. ’ve learned when I pair something that I want with (chips or candy) + protein & fiber. I feel satisfied & full. What I realized is that being healthy doesn’t mean I have to only certain foods. I’ve learned that living in the middle created freedom I craved while also allowing me to make choices that aligned with goals. Now before vacations I ask myself: -What small habits can I commit to? -How do I want to feel during this vacation? -What actions can I take pre-vacation to make the above questions easier to achieve? Summer is around the corner! You know that means: kids are out from school and vacations are being planned. Many would say this is worst time to start a new health habit. I disagree. Summer is the PERFECT time to start. Habit change is freaking hard & perfectionism makes it impossible.   Very commonly, I see peri and post-menopausal women trying to improve sleep, diet, exercise, and stress reduction all at once. You may have even found the perfect health routine but then life comes in and say “ha ha” and flips everything over. When you aren’t able to continue with the perfect health routine, the voice in the back your head says “if you can’t do it perfectly, then f&ck it”. The “f&ck it” sentiment continues to affect every aspect of your life and pretty soon, you find yourselves further back from square 1 feeling even more hopeless and defeated.   What if instead, during the chaotic times in life, you focus on one small achievable habit. A habit you could follow though during vacations, summer BBQs, and kid’s sporting events.

This is a realistic what I eat. 60lbs down and 8 inches off my waist since September 2023. Things that have helped me stay consistent⬇️ ➡️ Eating the same meals I did before, just healthier or low calorie options ➡️ Having a fuller plate. This “tricks” me into thinking I have more food. The mix greens lettuce I use for my salads are only 20cals per serving. So sometimes i put a lot of salad on my plate I hope this helps! It’s hard pill to swallow for so many.. It may have taken YEARS to fall out of shape, develop imbalances/pain, and realize something needs to change. No 4-month plan is going to reverse all of that. It could be a good start but the real results come with months of consistently showing up and putting in the work. Here’s a list of the top things to remember when restarting: 1. Start SLOW It’s great to be excited but doing too much too fast can lead to feeling overwhelmed and unenthusiastic. Not to mention injury. The best thing you can do is make small, manageable changes so that everything has a sufficient amount of time for integration. 2. Never overlook NUTRITION No matter how hard you train, what you eat will ultimately determine how you feel and the results you get. - Limit sugar - Increase protein - Reduce processed foods The higher the quality of your food, the more energy you’ll have and the better you’ll feel. 3. Remove obstacles One of the hardest parts can be a lack of support from the people closest to you. If you’re just getting started you’ll likely make friends and family uncomfortable if they’re not doing the same. Finding one person or a group may be the difference between success and failure. 4. Keep it SIMPLE Plateaus are normal from the beginner to the elite athlete. Don’t counter this by constantly changing the workout/plan. Learn to appreciate the repetition and progression (weight/reps/sets/rest) instead of feeling the need to change everything and try something new. How to BREATHE for a strong, heavy lift Breathing this way for each rep keeps the core braced, tight, safe and solid to optimize power right at the moment of the rep where it’s really needed. The pattern or the rule that applies to every heavy compound is: - At the top, brace the core and then inhale into the core to create intra-abdominal pressure. - Hold your breath on the way down, maintaining that pressure all the way down to the full depth of the rep. - On the way up exhale, right at the moment you are clearing the rep, right in that contraction to give you that good power from your diaphragm to get back up. Working out isn’t just for losing weight. It’s a necessity to live our lives the best way possible as we age. When we don’t workout, especially as we age, we lose muscle mass which increases the risk of falling and creates the inability to take care of ourselves-the reason people end up in nursing homes and increases the risk of injuries to our joints(ummm knees, hips feet, ankles, shoulders all sound familiar for injuries) We don’t enjoy the things we wished we could enjoy due to inability to physically do them We start to deal with insulin resistance because we don’t have enough muscle to use the glucose we are intaking There are so many reason to build strength, I can’t fit them all here. To put it short: We MUST keep building strength if we want to live a fulfilling life into our older years-It’s how it works there is no getting out of it. Sorry. Oh-and there is never a too late time to start. If you are in your 50,60,70,80 you can still start-it will still help As an online coach I work specifically with those just beginning their getting stronger journey or are starting over after some time off.
