I had insulin resistance for YEARS! And I had no idea a ) that I had it and B) what was happening in my body. Even when I figured first figured out how to heal my body so I could be a mom, I actually had no idea what I had been doing to it for sooo long. Knowing what I know now⊠sorry body. After healing my own body, I knew I wanted to help other women, so I went back to school and got educated in holistic nutrition and I learned what I had been doing to my body all along. So what is happening inside my insulin-resistant body? When insulin is elevated in the body, all the other hormones and feel-good neurotransmitters suffer, leaving me feeling low energy and depressed. When blood glucose is high, my nutrient transport units were becoming permanently attached to glucose, and no longer able to move around the nutrients the cells in my body needed, equaling poor healing, lowered immune system, and I was easily fatigued. These two things caused every cell in my body to suffer. My cortisol went wild, and my body got stuck in a permanent state of fight or flight. I rarely felt good, I even forgot what that felt like. My body showed its unhappiness in weight gain, acne, hair loss, joint pain all over, hormone craziness, and no desire to move. ⢠When trying to lose weight, it may seem like a good idea to do a few group fitness classes a week, take up running, or use an elliptical. However, relying solely on cardio isnât the most effective long-term approach for weight loss. There are two reasons cardio alone isnât great for weight loss: 1ïžâ£ Most people cannot do enough from cardio alone to make a large impact on their weekly calories. If you burn an average of 500 calories in a workout, that means youâd need to workout every single day to burn a pound a week. 2ïžâ£ We adapt to cardiovascular activity over time as we become more fit, making you burn less calories. This means over time, youâll need to do more activity or more intense activity to get the same effect. While cardio has a ton of benefits for your overall health, it just isnât a realistic or sustainable approach for losing weight. It takes too much time, and is frankly too difficult for most people to stick to long-term. It is absolutely a good tool to use, but relying on it alone rarely works. A far better approach is a more balanced training style (mix of general activity, weight lifting, and possibly cardio), and nutrition interventions. If instead of doing a hour of cardio every day, you: ð Find a few easy ways to reduce your calories (200-500 per day) ð¶ Add 2-3k steps per day (75-125 calories per day) ðïž Lift weights 3 times per week (200-300 calories per workout) This would give you a similar effect, while adding muscle, and being much more sustainable! If you prefer doing a ton of group classes, or running every day to lose weight, and it works for you - great! Letâs dive right in... ðð» Weight loss requires sustained effort. Effort in a calorie deficit. Thatâs the only way to lose weight. And no, keto, fasting and the latest dieting quick-fix wonât speed things up. Cardio isnât necessary for fat loss and Iâd argue itâs more important for maintenance and improvement of health than weight loss. Diet (and your calorie deficit) is the driver for fat loss. Carbs (or any macro) arenât âbadâ and they wonât magically make you gain body fat. Losing 0.5 to 1.0 pounds per week is great progress. This may hurt some feelings, but Semaglutide and Ozempic are NOT permanent fixes for weight loss. These are not miracle drugs. The only way to create sustainable fat loss is to create sustainable habits into your lifestyle. Stop looking for quick fixes. Your weight is going to go up and down all throughout the week. Expect this. Water retention, hormonal changes, and muscle gain can cause the weight on the scale to vary. Focusing solely on the scale only breeds disappointment. Thatâs it from me today...
