When I was a runner, I ran my butt off!!😳 Literally!! My mom used to tell me that I had the cutest little butt when I was growing up. Then the day came and my sister said, “you don’t even have a butt!”😮 I ran it off!!! This isn’t as much about aesthetics as it is about the most powerful yet neglected muscles in our bodies: the glutes!!! I regret that I didn’t start strength training sooner but thankfully I did start and that’s the message: just start!! It doesn’t matter what your age is!! Your body is amazing and it will adapt!! I train my glutes 3x per week doing various exercises. Some are “glute” specific and others, like the goblet squat shown here, also involve the muscles in your legs, core and arms. Darn’ good dumbbell lower body exercises🤩 Numero uno: Deadlifts *Rest your dumbbells between the front and side of your legs, keeping your arms straight. *Hinge your hips back and lower yourself down. *When you come back up, push your weight through your heels, and stand back up straight. *Top Tip: keep your back straight throughout this exercise, no hunched shoulders. Numero two-o: The Glute Killer… also known as Bulgarian Split Squats😂 *Have one foot placed on the floor in front of the bench, and then rest your other foot on the bench. This can be with toes on the bench, or the top of your foot, whatever is most comfortable for you. *Hold the dumbbells in both hands and lower yourself down. *Keep your back straight, and when you come back up, push your weight through your heels mainly. *Top Tip: To feel the exercise target your glutes even more, bend forward slightly - still making sure your back is straight, but at an angle rather than straight up. Numero Threeo: Goblet Squat *Hold one end of the dumbbell in your hands so it’s faced upright. *Hinge the hips and bend at the knees to squat down. *As you come up, push your weight through your heels and keep the back straight throughout this exercise. *Top Tip - Hold the dumbbell close to your chest Et voilà, 3 more lower body exercises for you to try at the gym! First session since the last post... each session this year is about a month apart 😅 Kept it light this time, as all the other times I've almost maxed out and then left myself crippled for a week 🤦🏻‍♀️ Something has clicked in my brain recently and I feel determined to get myself back on track. Seeing myself in photos played a big part in it, and also realising that I feel SO unhealthy and unfit! Ordered myself some new scales this morning so I can start weighing myself again (scared to see it tbh 😂), started using MyFitnessPal again to track my food, and cutting down on booze. Gonna take baby steps for a while and try to just go easy on myself. You’ll need to save this!

When we’re trying to get full glute development its important to know that there is both 2 divisions of the glutes. The upper and lower division. 
 The upper division is more dynamic of the 2, it is more capable at utilising external hip rotation & abduction of the hip. Where the lower division is pure hip extensors. 

So to bias these divisions we want to create peak resistance where a regional area will have adaptations and work the primary functional component of the glutes. 

For the lower glutes this means we want to both train and load the glutes in the longer muscle length position. Think RDLS and some other examples in the next slide (bottom 3). This is where the glutes are challenging most in the lengthened position and are working their hardest. 

For the upper division we want to train and load in the short muscle length. Think hip thrusts, kas bridges. The glutes are working their hardest in the shortened position.

Switching the days around this week for a couple reasons- my legs were too tired at the end of the week to give the pin squats a good go, and I’ve got a trail 10k this Saturday so need to be smart.
