✒ Build Better Characters by Eileen Cook ✒ This book introduces psychological techniques to help build characters and their backstory. It delineates basic questions for backstory, indicators for emotional intelligence, Myers-Briggs personality indicators, and how people move through stages of change. The chapters are short and concise, ending with a list of questions you can answer for your own characters. The questions are also handily listed at the end of the book. However, because the chapters are so short, the book felt quite shallow at points. I would also have liked to read some examples from existing novels of how these techniques can be implemented. Sounds of Childhood. I have been fixing and hanging curtains on our veranda this weekend. Sawing the curtains brought me right back to my childhood. I grew up with the clicking of knitting needles or buzzing of the Singer sawing machine as the background sounds that accompanied most evenings. Mum was always busy - the Devil finds work for idle hands and all that - but her busyness came from a place of necessity rather than an urge to create and I don’t think she saw her knitting and sewing as a creative outlet back then, though I’m sure it was that too. I think it kept her sane somehow. When she sat hunched over the Singer, I kept out of her way, leaving her room with her thoughts. Mum worked full time in a shop in town and all thought she wasn’t a single-mum, with my father gone months at a time out to sea, she might as well have been. He paid the bills and gave her a monthly allowance, which didn’t quite stretch to clothes, curtains, bedspreads and nice pillow covers, so that’s where the buzzing Singer and clicking needles came in. A necessity to keep us well dressed in a cosy house with some style. While I've sat hunched over my own Singer this weekend I have been thinking about creativity as a necessity. Well for my mum it was more a financial necessity, to me it is more a mental necessity. What does it feel like to you? Is it a necessity for you to create? Children of alcoholics are more likely to become alcoholics themselves? ❓ TRUE OR FALSE? ❓ True, because it’s a learned behaviour. 🙉 “Monkey See, Monkey Do.” 🙈 🙊 I was guilty of this belief and leaned towards taking the baton handed over by my alcoholic father. I’ve spent my fair share in a drunken state, waking up to the sound of a washing machine sloshing inside my head and wondering what the *** happened last night. I was gently sliding into a five nights a week Merlot habit, it was nice because a glass of wine is good for you right? And also it is fashionable 🍷 many women talk and post about enjoying their Chardonnay or Merlot, so why not I? But, just like #mymenopausalmiddle, this is something I want to let go of. Still, last night I had 2 ouzos 🥃. I never thought just 2 would give me a hangover today, but it did. 🙈 Sharing my exercise & sustenance with my accountability buddies and keeping a habit tracker is making me uber-aware of my choices. The ones that make me feel YAY! And the ones that make me feel meh. It’s also made me wonder why my father kept drinking and enduring his hangovers. It sounds like a strange thing to do, over such a long time, like self-punishment. And still, here I am, feeling the punishment. My choice to have one ouzo was clear and conscious. To have the second ouzos was a choice made without considering the impact it could have the day after. Was that what it was like, for my father? Did he make his choices without consideration? The impact alcohol has on our choices is mind-blowing. How often do we consider the impact our choices have on others, on our future self, or just our morning-after self? The real truth is what we CHOOSE based on what we BELIEVE. It is our personal believes that becomes our reality. So, whether it is TRUE or FALSE that children of alcoholics are more likely to become alcoholics themselves, I believe, comes down to WHAT we CHOOSE to BELIEVE. ❝ Throw it all behind you,❞ was my mum’s standard advice for shit that happened and past hurts. It was advice she wanted me to live by, but I couldn’t. 💮 Looking after my #mentalhealth { today’s topic for #mayonthemove2021 } has meant going back to untangle the hard truths of my past. To move forward I want to understand where I came from and how I became the one I was, ten, twenty, thirty years ago. This helps me live a good life as the person I want to be today. 💮 I want to accept the regrets I have and build a bridge from the child I was to the adult that I am now. I imagine this is the kind of work that usually takes place on a psychologist’s couch. I know that a big part of who I am is doing this work on my own. 💮 Working on my mental health also means looking into the future. I don’t want the things I’m hustling with to passed on to my daughter. I believe, as @markwolynn writes in his groundbreaking book ‘It Didn’t Start With You,’ that we inherit family trauma. 📚 During the years I have worked on my memoirs I have wondered when my mum ❝ threw it all behind her,❞ did it land on me? 🗣 C.G. Jung said ❝ The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.❞ 🎁 It is a great gift, not just for me but for my husband and daughter too, to have the time and tools to make mental health my priority. #Recommended Connect before you React. 🎯 This is the screensaver on my phone. It is one of my #lifehacks. It reminds me to take a breath when my emotions rise, before I react to something I hear, see or experience. Rising emotions usually means I’ve been triggered. It happens every day. We know that #triggers are subconscious reminders to be vigilant of potential danger. The thing is that much of these ‘potential dangers’ was programmed into our ‘childhood’ operating system and, when we upgraded our software to ‘adulthood,’ became fairly obsolete. But, because it’s part of our operating system it is still there. This is my #lifehack to reprogram it. We are out of nappies, we have mastered the art of walking, reading writing, even driving. We no longer depend on anyone to feed us. We are ready to live in the world as fully functional, happy and joyful adults. And then we get triggered by our pesky childhood programming. We end up having arguments with our partners and friends and children and parents and colleagues and the person who cut us off in traffic this morning and THEN all hell breaks loose and we wonder what’s wrong with everyone and why they won’t to play nice. Has this ever happened to you? It's happened to me. Even my inside voice triggered me. I got fed up. I decided NOT not play the unconscious trigger game anymore. I started to use this life hack to reprogram my operating system and ditch the triggers that no longer serves me. I have a constant in my life. My very own North Star. 🌟 It's been with me since I learn to write. From the first scratchings in my 10-year-old hand in a green plastic covered diary with lock and key, my life have always moved in words. The love and friendship dramas in my teens were often recorded daily. The long and winding philosophies of my 20s are written in the tiniest print—to save money on paper . . . without consideration for my much older eyes—trying to read them now I needing a double set of glasses. Stacks of travel journals from my mid 20s and all through my 30s holds hilarious stories about ‘Paddy and The Misses.” Motherhood and unravelling occupies the pages in my 40s sprinkled with ideas on how to live a better life and build business. Now, in my 50s I continue to journal, to reflect, to query and explore on the page. A writer writes alone? True or False? For me, that became a fallacy 5 months into my unravelling-first-draft when I meet @authordonnabarker in @daniellelaporte’s #FireStarter group. For today’s #MayontheMove I share a small snippet of the #Generations of women who went before me and the one who will chart our future. In his book ‘It Didn't Start With You’ @markwolynn, @VikingBooks discuss How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle. This has been a groundbreaking read, for me, in understanding the behaviour, decisions and choices, not only my parents made but also my grandparents and their parents before them. I grew up with my grandmother (Mormor) and grandfather, whom, when I was born, retired to look after me so mum could go out to work. Mormor had a melancholy nature (it wasn’t called depression then) which made her soft and caring towards me. She was also strong and courageous which instilled confidence and curiosity in little-me. There was always a sense of another woman in my grandmother’s aura, her own mother, Lovise. In a most horrendous fire Lovise was snatched from life in 1941, shortly after my mum was born. It was a loss Mormor never got over and I believe my surprise arrival filled a gap in Mormor's life, left by her mother’s premature departure. The love and devotion Mormor had for her mother she poured into me and that love lives on today, in my daughter, who bear her great-great-grandmothers name. It is not the trauma of loss I pass on to my daughter but the love for the women who went before us and made us who we are today. When the last house or apartment is packed up. When the six suitcases that will sustain us for the next few months are loaded on the taxi 🚕 (Slide ➡️ photo 😂 ) . When we’re all on board ✈️ and reached the point in the sky where we level off. When, from my elevated view, I see the country below us sliding from present to past, that’s when I pause and breath. Sprinkling a shower of gratitude 🙏 to the #homecountry we are leaving. When the fasten seatbelt sign ding off I breath again and let go. I let go of the expectation I’ve let play in my mind while thinking, dreaming, of the land where we next will land. The weird and wonderful, the confusing and surprising, the culture, the language, the people, the food, the school and communities, the nature and colours that awaits us in the new port we are about to call #home. Our #future for the next few years. The first time I realised #lettinggo off the expectations I had for my new home country surprised me. Before our move from London to Limerick I’d made reams and reams of plans. My expectation was for hardly any change at all. To me, the two countries, was nearly the same. How wrong I was. Arriving with my truckload of expectations gave rise to disappointment and stopped me from enjoying some of the wonders in my new surrounding. Moving form Egypt to Greece filled me with joy, to be back in Europe and able to shop for all that I’d missed . . . . I didn’t think THAT expectation was one I’d do well to let go of. The sops have been closed for near seven months 😂 . You see, I don’t get all of ‘letting go’ quite right. Letting go of #expectations, for me, is a great way to move in the world. Language 🗣 #MayontheMove2021 Does she speak Norwegian? 🇳🇴 My answer to that question was often meet by harsh judgement. Why would a mother deny her child the gift of learning a second language for free? 🙊 Why did feel I had to defend myself because my daughter doesn’t speak my mother-tongue? 🙈 Because I compared myself to the ones who judged me. I wanted to be liked and (s)he didn't because (s)he thought how I’d raised my child was wrong. 😳 That was when I found myself in the middle of a shame-shit-storm. 🌪 All my #triggers spiked like a tight balled-up hedgehog in self-defence. 🦔 Language didn’t come easy to me. It was a long battle with undiagnosed #dyslexia, frustration voiced by teachers, disappointed parents and laughing peers. They didn’t know how much their words hurt and stirred my storm of #shame. I barely had an English word in my head when I landed in Australia. 🇦🇺 To my backpacking peers, that was okay. I was practising a new language, I was meant to make mistakes. 🥳 Their laughter was joyous and helped me see the funny side as they explained the difference between a hairdresser and a hairdryer. 😂 Maybe it’s ironic, maybe it’s obvious, that today, I feel more at home in my second language, I love it more than my original tongue. My memoir is sett in Norway and still it’s coming out in English. 😉 I always pick up a few local words and phrases from every place I land. It's handy to know my Arabic right from left and I’d be rude if I didn’t say ‘thank you.’ 🙏 It would be cool, if she could speak my mother-tongue. Then we would have a secret language that nobody else understand. 🤪 Instead, she's picked up French, Greek and Spanish. For her, learning languages comes easy 🦋 Would I get #triggered into feeling #shame if anyone asks me that question today? No! Here I am, way outside my comfort zone. . . . again. This time, I’m not even going to pretend I know what I'm doing. Am I recording an audio book? 🎧 🎙 Well, that’s the idea. At least to make an attempt at it. First I suppose, I should figure out - how to I do this thing. The idea of beginner-brain excites me. I'm literally oozing with curiosity and questions. I feel like a kid in a toy shop for the very first time. Right now, I'm in that delicious state where I can't make mistakes. I can just stumble along till I find my way. I've sent out feelers to recording studios and I am looking at microphones and headsets AND I’ve downloaded the Audacity software to try out at home. I’m not sure if I should do it myself or hire a studio and sound engineer. What would you do? Does anyone want to chip in with ideas on what equipment I should get and how much should I spend? The first; my stubborn toddler voice, the second; my parents voices, trying to keep me safe. The third; my invincible twenty-something voice and the letter is one I still wrestle to the ground sometimes. I don't think I’d even heard about MENTORS, until I discovered an old box of cassette-tapes 📼 at the back of the cupboard, in the sales office, where I worked as a marketer in London 🏴 . I was 30 and the tapes were about to radically change my life. Who knew I needed help with living my own life? . The mere idea of it sounded preposterous at the time. As soon as I started to walk my life's journey accompanied by the voices of a growing number of self-help teachers, I realised that—just as my mother and grandparents had held my hand while I learned to walk—these teachers where holding my hand as I learned to live the good life I desired 🤗. I consumed these self-help tapes and books in secret, embarrassed that I should need guidance in how to live my own life. It would be more than a decade, and a new home country, 🇮🇪 before I meet likeminded MATES and delightfully discovered I was not alone. Moira Geary @therecombobulator was one my MATES. Conceived on the move, far out in the wast oceanic, I didn’t really take roots. I felt more like a weed, 🌱 easy to pluck out and toss away. I suppose that's what I did. Tossed myself out of my birth country 🇳🇴 as far as I could throw. I landed in Australia 🇦🇺 where I meet an Irish man 🇮🇪 When Australia tossed us both out 🛂 we became travel companions. 🎒 Meandering through Thailand 🇹🇭 and Malaysia 🇲🇾 on a shoestring 🩴 before landing back in Europe 🇪🇺 where we said goodbye and have a nice life. 🙋♀️ We didn’t know our roots had entwined. Love, longing and hope guided us back on our path. 🧭 Decades later we still journey together comfortably grounded on the move. This has made me strong enough to look back and see, the weed I once thought I was, have grown and sprouted beautiful wings. 🧚♂️ Spanning the coast of Norway, from Stavenger, Bergen and Ålesund to the very North in Lofoten, I have ancestral Roots. I’m proud in that. In our garden back in Limerick, Ireland I have Roots too. Here we planted trees, 🌲 apple and pears and even when we’re not there, they grow and await our return. Until then I focus on growing my wings, learning to fly 🦅 and pilot my own life. The movement is about bringing the feminine and masculine qualities into equilibrium. At the moment our individual and global/world energy hang heavy in the balance of the masculine. Achieving equilibrium will not only bring peace in the world but peace to every woman, man, and child. Equilibrium is an individual, local, cultural and global challenges. Connect before you React I adopted this from @doctorshefali , who says ‘Connect before you Correct’ as a parent. I love that woman and I’m so grateful for how her work in the world let me be a better mum. To Connect before I React is still a lesson I’m learning. It’s not just about how I parent but how I’m a wife, a friend, a daughter and sister, and most of all how I talk to myself. To be hones I thought I’d got it by now but hey, there’s more for me to learn on this. This is an extract of the full article - link in bio- my greatest weakness is “Self Regulation.” – What? I thought I was so cool and together and I hardly ever overreact or ‘loos-it.’ Pride and ego, an inability to bend and be flexible, stubbornness and a reluctance to give in. I have to admit to still being like a dog with a bone over certain things. I’m still a stubborn child, still holding on to my right to be right, to my right to my pain and my wound from not being seen nearly fifty years ago. In ‘The Awakened Family’ Dr Shefali gives us three things every child needs and wants: To be seen 💠 To matter 💠 To be worthy This ‘stuff’ didn’t exist in the 70s and 80s when I was parented. Discipline and ‘do as you’re told’ was the paradigm of raising children back then, so no – I wasn’t seen and my thoughts didn’t really matter in my family, simply because it wasn’t conducive to the environment at the time. Can I truly let go of knowing, of control, of being right, even if it’s just some of the times? My ego is saying definitely NOT. My intuition says I’ve nothing to lose and why not give it a go. I decide on somewhere in between, for now, and choose to start with Connecting before Reacting While I breathe into these awkward moments I ask, ‘is the meaning I’m putting on this situation true or am I having an emotional reaction? Is this moment here to teach me to let go, to be flexible, to open my mind or my heart? At least then, if my temper flares and I raise my voice and stamp my feet I am reacting as a grownup and not just purely based on old emotions and limiting beliefs. . . . . and breath . . . . . . . . . #speaktruthlies 📚 #speaktruthlies #consciousparenting
