“The value of fairy tales lies not in a brief literary escape from reality, but in the gift of hope that goodness really is more powerful than evil. Do not take that gift of hope lightly. It has the power to conquer despair in the midst of sorrow, and to light the darkness in the valleys of life.” —L.R. Knost ✨ • • • I’m really enjoying Fairytales right now! I always have—my mom would read them to me, and I always loved the fantasy world and magical feeling. The original fairytales are truly so deep!—full of images of truth, beauty, goodness over evil, and salvation. Fairytales are the groundwork for so many good stories and they are so worth reading.✨ I’m enjoying the Fairytale class from the @literarylifepodcast taught by Angelina Stanford. It’s mind blowing! White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved White Nights!!! I first discovered this book because it is recommended by @jackbenedwards and I had to read it! Let me just say that I related to the short story somewhat and it currently was so relevant to me right know. And that’s also why I loved reading White Nights so much. The short story is beautifully written by Dostoevsky and it is truly a timeless story. I mean it can be adapted into a movie today and nothing would need to be changed. There are so many quotes that I loved from the short story but my favourite was the opening of the story. Which just keeps you hooked. You will not get bored with this short story. I recommend the read. White Nights makes me want to read more books and short stories by Dostoevsky. I have some on my list now to buy. #qotd what is a book that you have read that you relate to? #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bibliophile #igreads #igbooks #instabook #instareads #bookshelf #bookreview #bookreader #bookaddict #booknerd #bookish #bookaesthetic #whitenights #shortstory #penguinclassics #classicbookstagram #classicbooks #classicbookquotes #fyodordostoyevsky #russianclassics #russiannovels #bookrecommendations #quickreads

“Where there’s life, there’s hope!” —The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien✒️ •Happy Middle-Earth March, fellow Tolkienites!! •I first discovered Tolkien’s world of Middle-Earth a few years ago, and I truly cannot now imagine my life without these stories—they’ve become a part of my personality, a part of myself. They have inspired me, they’ve encouraged me, and moved me in so many ways, more than I can say! •There’s something truly so special about The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and all of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth lore. I can’t help but wonder if my love, our love, of and longing for this world—fictional, that yet feels so real—grows from the “eternity planted in every human heart” that we all have. I think Tolkien believed that when he said: “We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God.” •What a beautiful thought. So thankful for these stories. Happy reading to you all, and may the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks!! #qotd Tell me, what Tolkien books have you read? "There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will." Written in 1892, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Yellow Wallpaper is an eerie story portraying a woman's descent into madness or a different mental condition. The woman and her physician husband come to a mansion to live for some months. In this house which has been empty for quite some time, the woman is instructed to rest by her husband. She can't do anything but the resting. Not even writing which is one of the closest things for her. In the room, there's is yellow wallpaper. She is awestruck by it. Its patterns. The colour and the vibes. She is horrified by it, and when she confesses this to her husband, he ignores considering her deteriorating nervous condition. He further warns her to ignore the wallpaper, relax and do as he says. But what's there in the wallpaper? Why is she haunted by it? They say it's a semi-autobiographical feminist manifesto as it throws light on 19th century man's patriarchal behaviour towards his mentally-ill wife. It showcases the ignorance people had towards mental health issues back then. Gilman's writing feels real; haunting at times. But overall, the book is thoughtful and one of the important reads from 19th century. #TheYellowWallpaper

Finished the first book for #amidnightdrearybookclub 🦇 I enjoyed reading this book so much with others and sharing our thoughts throughout the book. I hope to be more interactive next time! There were so many great quotes in this book and I considered sharing all of them, but I limited myself to just two. I previously shared the first one, but it’s my personal favorite. I agree with Basil’s sentiment of wanting to keep things a secret but also it makes me wonder what if Basil had kept Dorian a secret? Would anything have changed? The second quote I think encompasses the whole theme of the book - the idea of influencing someone whether it’s good or bad.

01.24.24 "'I wanted you to see something about her--I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. ------- won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.'" -To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee This is my first time reading this book, and I'm reading it in classic buddy read group hosted by @thereelbookery and @biblioberg . A (very late) review of Babel by R. F. Kuang (@kuangrf). I honestly love this book so much, it’s definitely on my reread things because I will never tire of it. Full blurb: Traduttore, traditore: An act of translation is always an act of betrayal. 1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation-also known as Babel. The tower and its students are the world’s center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver-working-the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars-has made the British unparalleled in power, as the arcane craft serves the Empire’s quest for colonization. For Robin, Oxford is a utopia dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. But knowledge obeys power, and as a Chinese boy raised in Britain, Robin realizes serving Babel means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide ... Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence? ❤️ 5 quotes from a recent fave 💔 As an seasoned quote connoisseur, I thought I’d share some particularly lovely lines from my most recent (nearly) 5-star read, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez: 💌“[T]hink of love as a state of grace: not the means to anything but the alpha and omega, an end in itself.” 💌“He was still too young to know that the heart's memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good, and that thanks to this artifice we manage to endure the burden of the past.” 💌“She had never imagined that curiosity was one of the many masks of love .” 💌“One could be happy not only without love, but despite it.” 💌“Courage did not come from the need to survive, or from a brute indifference inherited from someone else, but from a driving need for love which no obstacle in this world or the next world will break.” Have you read this one, or is it on your TBR? My review of the novel will be up tomorrow, so stay tuned! ❤️ . . . . #bookquotes #bookquotesoftheday #bookquoteoftheday #gabrielgarciamarquez #loveinthetimeofcholera #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblogger #bookblog #bookbloggers #bookbloggersofinstagram #bookloversofinstagram #bookcommunity #readersofinstagram #readingcommunity #igreads #igreaders #readmorebooks #classicliterature #classicbookquotes #classicbooks #literaryquotes #litfic #literaryfiction #instareads #instareader

Good morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys This is what I'd call "depression chic" literature. A fadedly glamorous, troubled and increasingly poor woman finds herself again in 1930s Paris, flitting from cafe to bar to restaurant, crying in toilets and trying to forget her sadness, when a particular encounter causes her to recount the tragic loss that brought her to that place. . Rhys stares darkness right in the eye, with a sad smile - I recall a wonderful scene where a charming young gigolo that the protagonist is out with for the evening asks why she won't go home with him - was she scared he'd kill her? Her thought in response is, "If I thought you'd kill me, I'd come away with you right now and no questions asked" I told you - depression chic. A perfect autumn read tbh. . Have you read any Jean Rhys or any other autumnal "depression chic" lit recently? Was this the original hot sad girl book / unhinged female narrator?? . #jeanrhys #goodmorningmidnight

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë I have not finished this yet. I just wanted to share some of my favourite quotes so far. “I am very happy, Jane; and when you hear that I am dead, you must be sure and not grieve: there is nothing to grieve about” - Helen Burns “my mind is at rest.” Helen Burns “You are sure, then, Helen, that there is such a place as heaven; and that our souls can get to it when we die?” - Jane Eyre “How comfortable I am! That last fit of coughing has tired me a little; I feel as if I could sleep: but you don’t leave me, Jane; I like to have you near me.” - Helen Burns “Her grave is in Brocklebridge Chrichyard: for fifteen years after her death it was only covered by a grassy mound; but now a gray marble tablet marks the spot, inscribed with her name and the word ‘Resurgam’” This whole part was so sad. It was so emotional to see the impact of death on Jane and how Helen was at peace with what was about to happen. This part is very special to me. I also love that Resurgam is now written on her grave. It suits her. • #janeeyre #janeeyrequote #charlottebrontë #classicbooks #classicliterature #classiclit #classicbookquotes #classicbook #books #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #booklover #bookquotes #bookquote #bookquotesoftheday #bookquoteoftheday #quotes #booknerd #bookaddict #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksta #bookrecommendations #storygraph #goodreads #bookishengagement

🇨🇳Sun Tzu was a Chinese general and most famously the author of the classic book “The Art of War”, one of the first documents on military strategies. 𝕀 𝕕𝕠𝕝𝕠𝕣𝕚 𝕕𝕖𝕝 𝕘𝕚𝕠𝕧𝕒𝕟𝕖 𝕎𝕖𝕣𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣🥀.

What’s your favorite month of the year and why? I don’t know if I can pick a favorite, but I do delight in October. Here are a few October quotes from authors who were simply besotted with October’s beauty. If you agree with any of the quotes, please share with your friends 🍂. A special thanks goes to @literarygrace_ for inspiring me to step away from my white walls and curl up next to a “Heavenstone.” Oh, I guess I need to explain… My oldest was just a toddler when we were driving past a cemetery one day and she said, “Mommy, look at all those heavenstones.” I liked that name so much better…so we decided to keep it. At first I was nervous to take photos at a cemetery. Not for reasons you think, but I didn’t want to do something silly in such a special place. So I asked Brandon if we could take some time to pay our respects. We paused to read the Heavenstones. Some stones were unreadable, but we were able to notice those who served our country and loved by husbands and children. One was from the 1700s. It felt like a connection to the past, and made me feel grateful for everything they did to make our little town what it is today. Now go enjoy your October 🍂

“But I saw that everything within my view which ought to be white, had been white long ago, and had lost its lustre, and was faded and yellow.” —Charles Dickens (Great Expectations) Miss Havisham is a fascinating character. We live in a culture that insists on “letting go, moving on, getting over it.” Miss Havisham cannot move on. She is the archetypal poster girl for those of us who tend to dwell or obsess or meditate, and I, for one, always come back to her with a degree of self-recognition, if not relief. Miss Havisham has been abandoned on the morning of her wedding. “Ghosted” (not a term available to Dickens, but he definitely understood it!) by her fiancé, she has suffered a psychological death—a state of being richly conveyed by Pip’s memory of waxworks and skeletons, and the decaying, tomb-like state of Satis House. She literalises the psychic immobility of traumatic experience. Miss Havisham is very much a woman of her time. Marriage was supposed to be her purpose in life, her identity, her entry into society. After her trauma, restricted by the shame and harm she has experienced, the hate and rage she feels is directed both inward and outward. She hopes to avenge her wrongs through Pip’s broken heart, but she also punishes herself. Like many trauma sufferers, she finds it difficult to distinguish punishment from repetition compulsion. By punishing Pip, a representative and sacrificial male, Miss Havisham reworks the events that broke her heart. Miss Havisham has been brought to the screen by many (many!) actresses, but in my opinion Gillian Anderson and Helena Bonham Carter are the two who have best captured the fragility and vulnerability which warps this character’s behaviour into monstrous vindictiveness. . . . #victober #victorianliterature #greatexpectations #dickens #charlesdickens #charlesdickensquote #gilliananderson #helenabonhamcarter #misshavisham #misshavishamsbookclub #misshavishamaesthetic #darkacademia #classicbookstagram #victober2023 #booklover #bookish #booksinfilms #booknerd #booksintelevision #classicbookquotes #victorianbookstagram #victorianbook #victorianbooks #victorianbookclub
