🌧️RAIN🌧️ My favourite time is honestly the literal two weeks of the year when this rhododendron blooms! Thanks @thecorkedreader for tagging me to share a stack spelling the word RAIN. This pic was taken on a day when it had rained the entire day and it finally let up to let a few rays of sun through. My feet got very wet. R - Ringdrotten (Lord of the Rings) A - Aces Wild I - Is Love the Answer? N - Nettle & Bone I haven’t tagged anyone today but if you’d like to have a go at a RAIN stack too I’d love to see it! Today is Mother’s Day Mother’s Day usually leaves me pretty disappointed, so I’m keeping expectations low today. However, I did get this flower from my 7 year old yesterday. Maybe it’ll be a good omen for today? Additionally, @get.outside.and.read is doing a bookish scavenger hunt and I’m going to be highlighting that in my post this week! Today’s find: a book with a heart on the cover. #bookstagram #books #booksandflowers #flowersandbooks #booksinnature #bookscavengerhunt #somethingwilder #christinalauren

Q. What's the weather like where you are? Has it influenced your plans? ☀️ Welcome to an outside version of #coffeeandcurrentlyreading except with a smoothie! (It just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?) We've had a beautiful weekend of weather here in the UK but rain is forecast so trying to enjoy it as much as I can before we have to hide back inside. The smoothie is thanks to trying to increase my number of different fruit and veg per week after watching the gut documentary on netflix (tip: don't watch when eating 💩) As I type this...its actually gotten colder and now I want to go back inside 😅 typical British weather. So I'm currently reading Seven Mercies, the sequel and conclusion to Seven Devils. I'm loving this diverse, woman led, sci-fi duology. The representation in it is awesome. Hoping to finish it today 😁 #currentreads #sevenmercies #sevendevils #spaceopera #scifibooks #elizabethmay #lrlam #diversebooks #diverseauthors #booksinnature #readingoutside #pinkbooks #yascifi #lgbtbooks

✨How are you liking your current read? I’ve been in a bit of a slump, but I think I’m finally coming out of it. 📖😅 The weather has been gorgeous here today, so I’ve spent most of the day outside with family. ☀️ My cousin had her school play last night, so my aunt and grandma came up for it and they ended up spending most of the day here today before heading home, so that was nice! I hope you’ve been enjoying your day! . . . . #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookdragon #fantasyreader #romancereader #booklover #letsread #bookstagrammer #bookaddict #booksinnature #readerlife #bookish

Seeing all of the flowers start to bloom this May has inspired me to get back into the garden, clear out some of the weeds and tend to my potted plants 🪴 These are two nature publications which I like to pull out and flick through. Botanicum is a beautifully illustrated book by Katy Scott & Kathy Willis produced in consultation with Kew Gardens, giving an overview on the evolution of plants and fungi in a large A3 format. Perfect for displaying on your coffee table! Blumenhaus is a magazine publication covering nature, botanical art and fashion. I have a copy of issue 3 but there are currently 4 issues out. Everything about this magazine is beautiful: the photography, the typography, the graphics and illustrations. They also have an Instagram which they post regularly on @blumenhausmagazine . I have posted a snippet of what’s in both but I easily could have flooded my feed with their work! Highly recommend. #blumen #blumenhaus #blumenhausmagazine #kew #kewgardens #kewbotanicalgardens #kewbookshop #botanicum #botanicumbook #botanical #botanicalillustration #botanicalmagazine #daisyfield #springishere #naturebooks #botanicalbooks #booksinnature #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #booksinreview #bookstagrammerssummerbash #picnic #flowerart #floralart #flowerbook #flowerbooks #botanicalillustration #botanicalillustrations #booksta

Cornelia Funke: Das Grßne KÜnigreich ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Was fßr ein wunderbares Kinderbuch! 🍁Book Review🍁 Everything I know about love, by Dolly Alderton ⭐⭐⭐ This wasn't quite what I expected, but it did enjoy it. Everything I know about love is a kind of reflective autobiography focusing on the author's relationship with love, from childhood to her thirties. You think it's about her romantic relationships, but as she moves through the years it becomes clear that it's platonic love and her friendships that are centre stage. This is heartwarming to read, but the things she's learned do seem to largely come from her romantic relationships. The beginning really threw me at first because there was a lot of drugs, alcohol, and partying in her teens/early twenties. That's really not something I can relate to, and I also didn't expect it! Her honesty was refreshing, though she comes across as quite selfish and self-absorbed at times. I can understand feeling sad your friends are growing up and moving in with partners, but not being as angry and betrayed as she was! I think this was a heartwarming, if not bittersweet, memoir of a young woman growing up and becoming more emotionally mature - but it took until her late twenties (I think 28?) to get there. I realise things are different for everyone, but that was kind of wild to me I did tear up a couple of times. It wasn't always sad tears either! I'd like to read it again in a few years, and see how my own experiences change what I take away from the book. There's some fair advice in places, and it was interesting to see how her thoughts on love changed over the years - but I was mainly thinking about how glad I was that I didn't have her experiences. I could relate to some of her thoughts about relationships though! I think perhaps I'm not the ideal reader for this one! #everythingiknowaboutlove #memoir #nonfictionbookstagram #nonfiction #reflectivebook #booksinnature #bookstagramuk #booksoutdoors

“We only need to step outside to find that, in darkness, the world lights up. Let’s look up together.” ~ Matt Gaw Were you lucky enough to see the incredible sky last night? It blew me away. Here at the barn I was treated to a spectacular show of the aurora borealis. {I shared an image in my stories last night} 🌌 It seems a good day to talk about the talented author @mattgaw books. 📚 I have been raving about his latest book In All Weathers for a while and last month it was the non fiction staff pick @bookabookshop However I also enjoyed Under The Stars when it was published four years ago. 📘”A beautifully written exploration of the power of the lights of night, Matt Gaw ventures forth into darkness to find out exactly what we’re missing when we fill our world with artificial glow, obliterating the subtler natural lights that have guided us and wildlife for millennia. Walking by the light of the moon in Suffolk and under the scattered buckshot of starlight in Scotland; braving the darkest depths of Dartmoor and the glare of 24/7 London, Under the Stars is an inspirational and immersive call to reconnect with the natural world - and to switch off.” 📝 Matt’s writing is so accessible and he has a beautiful writing style that makes you feel like you are walking alongside of him. Add to that the joy his ability to lift your spirits as you turn the pages ~ it makes for a wonderful read. Even if you think non fiction books are not for you ~ I implore you to treat yourself to a copy. 🌳BOOK REVIEW🌳 “Danger makes you deadly. She’d misunderstood. It had never been danger. It was fear.” Forest of Souls - Lori M. Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 This was a good start to a YA fantasy trilogy. Sirscha was an interesting MC and I liked how she interacted with the other characters in the book. There were quite a few side characters and I felt like some of them deserved a bit more page time, but hopefully that’ll be coming up in the next books. Although there was lots of action and exciting things happening throughout, it took me a while to become invested. Luckily, I really enjoyed the last third of the book and thought the ending set up great things for the next book. Excited to see where the story goes. Try if you like: 🌳Haunted forests 🌳Mysterious magic 🌳Dragon-like animals 🌳Politics and complicated history 🌳Fast paced storytelling with lots of action 🌳Friendship goals!!

Agatha Christie - Death on the Nile (1937) ★★★★★ Linnet Ridgeway has everything - she’s young, beautiful and rich - until she loses her life on a luxury cruise along the Nile, a cruise with Hercule Poirot as a fellow passenger… This was one of my favourites before starting my #SharkyReadsChristie project, so I’ve read it several times and came into it knowing whodunnit, how and why. But that didn’t take away from the pleasure of reading it - it’s such a clever puzzle that it’s great to see how Christie weaves in all the clues (incidentally, I never came close to solving it the first time I read it), and remains a favourite. I had forgotten, however, the little side plots, and they kept me on my toes. Hercule Poirot is on fine form, both as detective (naturally) and match-maker - it never fails to amuse me in older books when, out-of-the-blue, two young people proclaim they are absolutely in love and intend to marry after having known each other less than a week. The Egyptian luxury cruise setting works well - obviously it creates a closed-room situation, the murderer must be on the boat and all the passengers are potential suspects, but it also firmly establishes the milieu in which (most of) the passengers belong, a sort of shorthand to tell us more about the characters themselves. This is not the book to read if you want detailed descriptions of the various sites they visit or even just Egypt generally, but nobody is picking up an Agatha Christie as a travelogue. A clever, puzzling closed-door murder mystery, with a glamorous setting and a distinctive cast of potential suspects. Have you read this one? 🦈

Happy Thursday! I wanted to share a Christian nonfiction book that I received a copy of but haven't had a chance to read yet. I'm intrigued by the description and hope to start it soon! Here is the synopsis from Goodreads: "Why did you choose to read this book description? Is it because of the cool cover? It’s okay...we have all judged a book by its cover at one time or another. Or is it because the word Chaos completely describes your life right now? Or maybe, just maybe, you thought the author was awesome and decided this book would be a New York Times Bestseller? Probably not the last scenario. If I had to guess, I’d say it has something to do with that overwhelming stress weighing down on you. Reality is, there are many people in this world facing hard times: Anxiety, incarceration, loss, addiction, divorce, sickness, and I could go on, but I need this description to fit on the back of the book... How do we overcome these overwhelming times? Great question. I don’t have all the right words, which probably isn’t what you want to hear from an author. But I know Who does. His Name is Jesus. And He is the only One Who can bring unexplainable peace in the midst of your Chaos. Whether you are reading this behind prison bars, in the hospital room, at the funeral home, or on the awesome World Wide Web, I hope you choose to read this book. Chaos is inevitable. It comes like a thief in the night— stealing, killing, and destroying all we hold dear. But there is hope. Where the enemy comes to destroy, God comes to rebuild. He comes to restore. He comes to bring life and joy. This book isn’t some self-help book. Nor is it an autobiography. It’s a collaboration of real people experiencing real pain, learning how to overcome the overwhelming. Jesus isn’t just the center of this book. He’s the beginning, middle, and end. And spoiler alert: He always wins." Have you heard of this book or read it? Would you say "chaos" is a good description of your life, or does your life feel calm right now? Thank you to Noah Asher for sending me a copy of this book! #chaos #Christiannonfiction #overcoming #stress #nonfictionbooks #booksinnature #booksandnature #bookstagram #nofilter

🌱Some cosy-sounding thrifted books 🌱 📚Bookshop by the Shore, by Jenny Colgan Jenny Colgan books are always cosy, and feel a bit like a warm hug. I'm sure this one will be no different! A grand baronial house on Loch Ness, a quirky small-town bookseller, a widowed father, and a single mom looking for a fresh start. Zoe accepts a job as a nanny for three "gifted" children in the Scottish Highlands. With the help of her new friend Nina, the local bookseller, Zoe starts to out down roots in their little community. 📚The Cosy Tea shop in the Castle, by Carol Roberts When Ellie Hall lands her dream job running the little teashop in the beautiful but crumbling Claverham Castle, it’s the perfect escape from her humdrum job in the city. Life is definitely on the rise as Ellie replaces spreadsheets for scones, and continues her Nanna’s brilliant baking legacy. When Lord Henry, the stick-in-the-mud owner, threatens to burst her baking bubble with his old-fashioned ways, Ellie wonders if she might have bitten off more than she can chew. But cupcake by cupcake she wins the locals over, including teashop stalwart, Doris, and Ellie’s showstopping bakes look set to go down in castle history! Now all that’s missing in Ellie’s life is a slice of romance – can Joe, the brooding estate manager, be the one to put the cherry on the top of Ellie’s dream? 📚The Oxford Murders, by Guillermo Martinez Now this one may not be as cosy as I initially thought? Two mathematicians join forces to stop a serial killer. It begins on a summer day in Oxford, when a young Argentine graduate student finds his landlady - an elderly woman who helped crack the Enigma Code during World War II - murdered in cold blood. Meanwhile, a renowned Oxford logician receives an anonymous note bearing a circle and the words "the first of a series." As the murders begin to pile up and more symbols are revealed, it is up to this unlikely pair to decipher the pattern before the killer strikes again. #thriftedbooks #bookstagramuk #booksoutside #booksinnature #booksinyorkshire #bookstagrammer #cosybooks #theoxfordmurders #thecosyteashopinthecastle #bookshopbytheshore #jennycolgan

Jhumpa Lahiri - Whereabouts (2018/2021 tr. Jhumpa Lahiri) ★★★☆☆ An unnamed woman moves through the unnamed Italian city where she lives, noticing details of life around her… A quiet book, without a plot beyond glimpses of life told through vignettes, it should have been right up my alley. It was enjoyable enough in the moment, and it’s refreshing to read a middle-aged, contentedly single MC, but there was something missing for me, the novel lacked…soul. I’ve been wondering if it’s related to Lahiri’s decision to write in Italian, a language I understand she has gained fluency in relatively recently. It’s an impressive endeavour, but I’m not convinced by the choice - fluency is one thing, but truly feeling the depths and nuance of a language in your bones and wielding it accordingly is something else - it can be done, but the lack of spark suggests perhaps Lahiri isn’t quite there yet. I am keenly aware that I express myself differently across languages, not just due to my own varying levels of eloquence but because I think differently in different languages (and I’m not alone in that), including my two “native” languages, and the framework of a language inevitably affects how we tell a story. Or, perhaps something was lost in translation, though that would be unfortunate as Lahiri translated her own novel. All of that said, I haven’t read any of Lahiri’s other work (though I am keen to), so it’s hard to draw conclusions - is it the language thing or is it simply a topic that Lahiri couldn’t quite bring to life? Anyway, that rambling tangent doesn’t really tell you much about the book… I don’t actually have much else to say, other than I found it occasionally verged on dull, and the character, her life and the setting have failed to leave an impression. In fact, I came out of the book more interested in the question of choosing which language to write in, than any aspect of the book itself (as you might have gleaned). Quiet glimpses of a middle-aged, single woman’s life in an unnamed Italian town, enjoyable enough but not particularly memorable. Bought from @booketybookbooks Have you read this one? Any thoughts on the language question? 🦈

I finished How To Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair back in February but I lost my notes on it so that turned me off a bit from posting. I remember I had a lot of thoughts but it's been a while so I can't recall most of them. I'm sorry if this review will be lackluster because of it! With that said, this is one of my favorite books I've read so far this year. I love memoirs when they're done well and the author here has had a very interesting life, certainly one that's worth telling in a book format. She's also an incredible writer, the language she uses is very poetic but it never becomes obnoxious or too much, it's just beautiful. I listened to the audio version and that was a great idea since it sounds even better in her delivery. You can tell she becomes emotional as she recounts certain events and that made it easier for me to empathize with the story (something which I often struggle with in everything I read). For those who haven't heard about the book yet, Safiya Sinclair's life story is interesting because she grew up in an extremely strict Rastafarian household in Jamaica. It's an experience not often discussed in mainstream culture. A surprising part of interacting with this book for me was that I realized I was already familiar with the majority of the Rastafarian vocabulary and history. That comes from something a bit shameful: there was a period in Hungary when I was a teen and reggae music and Rastafarianism became very popular suddenly. We all got into it, probably in a mildly racist and ignorant way which makes me cringe now, but at least I gained some knowledge that proved to be helpful. Something else that is worth mentioning is that the figure of an abusive father is very central to this narrative. It's one of my triggers but I loved the book enough to persevere. I felt it take a toll on me mentally so maybe be careful if it's something you're sensitive to. All in all, this is one of the most beautifully written memoirs I've ever encountered that is both sad and empowering. If you love learning about unique life experiences, like authors' origin stories and poetic writing, this is a must-read.

What do you reach for when you’re in a reading slump? Do you have any tips? ad - gifted by @faberbooks I feel like I’ve spent this year going in and out of reading slumps. One thing that helps me are graphic novels as they seem to be easier to digest through the images. One that I had my eye on for a while was Giant by Mollie Ray so I was excited when Faber offered to send me a copy. Giant is a silent graphic novel, as in there is no text, no dialogue, only images. It took a little while to get used to that but once I did it was a gorgeous story of a family trying to live as one of their children going through treatment for cancer. In the story it’s shown through the child growing gigantic. That seems apt for the effects the illness has on them and their community. The illustrations are beautiful and filled with emotion that tell a story that is often hard to find the words for. I devoured this moving, beautiful book and I’m sure you would too. 🏷️: #Giant #MollieRay #GraphicNovel #BookReview #BooksInNature #BeautifulBooks #ReadingSlump

Jon Fosse - A Shining (2023/2023 tr. Damian Searls) ★★★★☆ A man starts driving without a destination, eventually arriving at the end of a forest track; night is falling and it begins to snow and he decides to get out and venture into the forest… At under 50 pages, there’s not much to the story - as stated in the blurb, the narrator ventures into a forest as night falls and it begins to snow (a decision which is exactly as stupid as it sounds, by the way) and the novella is his internal monologue as he does so. It is overwhelmingly immersive and keeps circling back in on itself - the narrator oscillates between revisiting memories and the present, but his thoughts get progressively more incoherent and dreamlike as the evening progresses and the weather conditions and situation take their toll both psychologically and physically. I wouldn’t say I gained any ground-breaking insights on the human condition or quite convinced by the existential aspect introduced by the glowing being’s appearance, but it is a remarkable portrayal of the hallucinatory effects of hypothermia, and I did find myself held in thrall by the writing. Joelle Charbonneaun YA-dystopiaa The Testing (2013) on helppo suositella mm. Nälkäpelin, Outolinnun ja The City of Emberin faneille. Tästä tuli mieleen myÜs Fallout-tv-sarja. "Funny how some things never change." (s. 197) PäähenkilÜ on 16-vuotias Malencia Vale. Yksi keinoista muuttaa asioita paremmaksi on The Testing, tiukka karsinta, johon valituista nuorista tulee tulevia johtajia. Cian lisäksi Five Lakesin nuorista kolme muuta valitaan, mikä on erikoista, koska edellisen kerran testiin on valittu ketään kymmenen vuotta aiemmin. Onko joku sabotoinut systeemiä ja kirjannut nuorten menestyksen alakanttiin? "The testing is no longer filled with exicement fot the opportunity to help Commonwealth rebuild. The Testing is now about staying alive." (s. 140) Yksi muista valituista nuorista on Tomas, jonka perään kaikki Five Lakesin tytÜt huokailevat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #helmetlukuhaaste2024 - 27. Rebecca Yarros - Iron Flame (The Empyrean II) (2023) [No rating] I was suitably entertained by Fourth Wing (admittedly for many of the wrong reasons) to come back for Round Two… Look, this is barely a review. Basically everything I said about Fourth Wing - cringeworthy writing at times, one-dimensional cliché characters, well-worn fantasy plot lines - still applies with the added bonus of terrible pacing plus an editor apparently asleep on the job. Likewise the proofreader. There was a strong rushed-to-publication feel to the whole book. But was I entertained enough to abandon all critical thinking and let myself get pulled along for the ride? Yes. As I said in my review for the first book, every now and then I just want to read a book with my brain switched off (that’s also why, as with the first, I haven’t rated it). By the way, I know I just said that I approached this book without engaging my brain, but a tiny detail that has been niggling at me since I read it is: a peripheral character, a rider, wears glasses. WHY. Walking in the rain with glasses is annoying enough, so presumably flying on a dragon with glasses is a bloody nightmare (in fact, I seem to remember that at one point Violet specifically mentions taking her flight goggles off because it’s too hard to see in the rain). And wouldn’t you just get your eyes fixed by a Mender anyway? It has no relevance to the story, which makes it all the more irritating. Choose a more logical distinguishing feature, Yarros. Rating: 5 ⭐️ Spice: 0 ⛔️ Review: ”No one will forget me. Not my look, not my name. Katniss. The girl who was on fire!” …. Where do I begin? … This book was amazing. No matter how many times I read the saga or watched the films, I was completely transported into a world of adventure, danger and political intrigue. This is one of my most favourite series! There was nothing I didn’t love about this book! - The plot, the characters, the world-building, the budding romance … it was all so great. When someone asks me what I consider to be classical literature, this is what it is! Katniss was an amazing character. She was so strong, courageous, passionate and more. Of all the female protagonists I have read, Katniss is my favourite. Peeta was a dream! He was so sweet and sensitive and supported Katniss unconditionally. Rue was a little angel and I still grieve her loss! I could stay here all day and talk about the characters of this book but I won’t! I have heard many people dispute the “love-triangle” between Katniss, Peeta and Gale but I quite enjoyed reading it. To me this was a strong part of the book. Gale is Katniss’s best friend, they do have a special connection in that sense. Peeta is the boy who helped her on a deep and spiritual level with just a loaf of bread, they are connected in ways I don’t think either of them truly understand yet. Either way I am team Peeta all the way! I will forever recommend this book but you should especially read it if you love: 🏹 Dystopian Worlds. 🏹 Love Triangles. Overall this book was phenomenal and I can’t wait to continue this series! #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagramuk🇬🇧 #booksbooksbooks #bookcommunity #bookloversofinstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreviewersofinstagram #booknerd #bookphotography #booksinnature

Murder Road By Simone St. James ✨Book Review✨ 💫Reminds Me Of: - Texas Killing Fields - Ghosts of Highway 20 💫Read If You’re Into: - 1990s Michigan setting - Mystery/ Crime - Medium Pacing - I don’t see this as a thriller- definitely a ghost story 💫What I Liked: - Listened to this as an audiobook despite having the physical copy because I enjoyed Brittany Pressley’s narration so much. I will continue to seek out books she’s read. - I liked the era of time & the mystery plot 💫What Fell Flat: - I started to lose interest at the halfway point despite the engaging audio. My attention would come and go throughout the book. - I wanted more from the ending, but I can’t say what without spoilers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/(5) QOTD: Do you have any creepy roads near you? In March Karen (@cover.to.bookcover ) and I went to a book swap and I came home with this. I knew next to nothing about Nat Turner, but I’m a sucker for graphic novels. What a book! The only words in the book are quotes, most coming from Nat Turner as he sat in prison. Over 200 pages of shocking, emotional, and violent black and white drawings. We start at the beginning of incarceration from the villages in Africa, cross the sea in slave ships, and sold to the highest bidder. There is one horrific image from this section that will surely stick with me for quite awhile. The middle is full of how Nat became this religious figure, who received visions from God, and finally decided that it was time to revolt. The revolt, or insurrection, section was shocking in its violence. Nat and his men were responsible for killing 55 men, women, and children, but even knowing that from the introduction didn’t prepare me. Those images are also going to stick me for quite awhile. This book is powerful. Some will find the images too violent. It’s not for everyone. The shocking images served the purpose of making me take notice and feel the horror, to see it. It’s a great book. Recommend for graphic novel lovers and for those who want to know more about Nate Turner and the slave rebellion of 1831. #booksta #bookstagram #books #booksinnature #graphicnovels #graphicnovel #slaverebellion #natturner #kylebaker

Reading from the POV of a teenage girl as imagined by a male author is almost always rough, and Black River Orchard was no exception. Calla's POV was so hard to take seriously, made worse by one of my personal most hated things that male authors do when trying to write from the POV of a woman, which was using "UGH!" as part of an internal thought. I promise, no one in the history of the world thinks a whiny sound of frustration in their head. While there were some components to the story that I enjoyed individually, and the last 20% of the novel came together really nicely, the first 80% was a slog. I definitely would have dnfed if I hadn't purchased it through LibroFM. 😕 . . . #BlackRiverOrchard #ChuckWendig #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BooksOfInstagram #BooksBooksBooks #BookstagramFeature #Books #Love #PhotoOfTheDay #Photography #Reading #Literature #ReadingList #ReadersOfInstagram #Bookworm #BookLovers #BooksInNature

April saw the tail-end of my International Booker longlist reading, and then a slightly chaotic mix of books as I recovered from that rather intense undertaking. Overall, April turned out to be a pretty good reading month enjoyment-wise (yay!), and although it looks like I’ve done well at reading from my own shelves, I must admit that the majority were recent acquisitions. That said, I’ve had The Starless Sea for so long that it was part of my “22 in 2022 list,” so look at me absolutely smashing those reading challenges and TBR shelf-reduction goals, ahem 😂 Anyway, reviews for all to come, as per usual, but in the meantime, these are the books I finished in April: 📚 Fiction: Jente Posthuma - What I’d Rather Not Think About (2020/2023 tr. Sarah Timmer Harvey) ★★★★☆ Juhani Karila - Summer Fishing in Lapland (2019/2023 tr. Lola Rogers) ★★★★☆ Erin Morgenstern - The Starless Sea (2019) ★★★★☆ Velia Vidal - Tidal Waters (2020/2024 tr. Annie McDermott) ★★★★☆ Sara M Saleh - Songs for the Dead and the Living (2023) ★★★★☆ Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot’s Christmas (1938) ★★★★☆ Kate Atkinson - Normal Rules Don’t Apply (2023) [Short stories] ★★★☆☆ Andrey Kurkov - The Silver Bone (2020/2024 tr. Boris Dralyuk) (The Kyiv Mysteries I) ★★★☆☆ Domenico Starnone - The House on Via Gemito (2020/2023 tr. Oonagh Stransky) ★★☆☆☆ What was you favourite read in April? 🦈

Calling all nature-loving, Agatha Christie fans 📣🌿 Have you ever wondered who, or what, is responsible for the decline of Hedgehogs? Ghosts In The Hedgerow is a ‘Hedgehog Whodunnit’ - an investigation into why these egg-munching, slug-eating, power-walking bundles of spines are disappearing 🦔 With the help of a Poirot-esque detective & a library full of finger-pointing suspects, Tom Moorhouse explores the issues that are threatening Hedgehogs; from electric fences & robotic lawnmowers to slug pellets & the Royal Mail’s rubber bands🔍 But with so many suspects, who’s to blame? The farmer? The driver? The badger? Or perhaps the gardener? 🚜🦡 Find out in this entertaining, witty & emotional murder mystery, filled with all the gasp-worthy plot twists of an Agatha Christie novel 📚✨️ It’s Hedgehog Awareness Week, so I thought it was the perfect time to finally share my review of this brilliantly clever book. Ghosts In The Hedgerow was one of my favourite reads of last year and Tom Moorhouse is now one of my auto-read authors – I loved Elegy For A River🦔 🏞 From Water Voles to Hedgehogs, Moorhouse is a breath of fresh air when it comes to nature writing. With humorous footnotes and unfiltered transparency about the conservation sector alongside his clever and engaging writing, makes for some of the most accessible books available on science & nature 🧪🌿 This is a must-read for all nature-loving bookworms, and an important call to action to come together and save one of the many icons of British wildlife 🦔 #GhostsInTheHedgerow #TomMoorhouse #NatureBooks #NatureLovingBookworms #Bookstagram #Naturegram #Books #FiveStarRead #BooksInNature #BooksInTheWild #BookRecommendations #BookPhotography #NatureLovers #Hedgehogs #HedgehogsOfInstagram #HedgehogAwarenessWeek #Hedgerows #BritishWildlife #Wildlife #BooksAboutNature #NatureWriting #ScienceBooks #Conservation #AgathaChristie #MurderMystery #ExplorePage #HedgehogWeek #NationalHedgerowWeek

Emily Habeck - Shark Heart (2023) ★★★★☆ A few weeks after marrying Wren, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis: due to a genetic mutation, he will mostly retain his consciousness and mind, but his body will progressively transform into that of a great white shark… I will admit that, given the premise, I went into this book with very low expectations - as a former shark scientist, I was fully prepared to be very annoyed (not helped by the cover, which is pretty and all, but the wrong species of shark). Yet I enjoyed this book and actually found it quite moving. For a start, Habeck has clearly actually read up on basic shark biology. In fact, the most ridiculous part of the whole book is one of the characters deciding to teach themselves to scuba dive on their own after ordering a bunch of gear off the internet, knowing nothing about it and without taking a single lesson (PLEASE don’t do this at home, kids). The story requires a suspension of disbelief from the start - the mutations make no biological sense and there’s no explanation as to why they happen, it’s just the way it is - if you’re unable to just accept the premise or hate magical realism, this is probably not the book for you. That said, the lack of explanation actually made the book stronger for me, even though I normally like explanations - Habeck isn’t trying to bring in a point about some biochemical catastrophe or genetic modification or whatever, it’s very much about the people dealing with the situation. So yes, Lewis is turning into a shark, but ultimately this is a moving story of human nature, of facing the unknown when you don’t really have control over the situation (whatever that situation might be), and the various ways that humans react to that. When something happens that drastically alters how we pictured our lives playing out, how do we answer the inevitable “why me?!?”, how do we step up (or not) and how do we grieve a life that won’t be happening. An absurd premise which turns into a surprisingly moving story of love, facing an unknown you have no control over and mourning the life you expected. To Sir Phillip, with Love ~ Julia Quinn | 4 stars There really is nothing like a regency romance. I must say I was a littler surprised with the story and husband Quinn chose to give Eloise, I fear I can’t say much without spoiling it for others. I wasn’t disappointed, but it didn’t seem in line with the way Eloise had been set up, though as it has been a while since I read the first 4 books, having recently rewatched the show, I think the show probably exaggerates Eloise’s personality a bit. The story is sweet, with a few emotional moments but my favourite bit of all was when Eloise’s four brothers intervene in her escapades causing for a very comedic scene. What I LOVE about Quinn’s writing is her dialogue and banter, there is nothing forced or cringy about it, it is genuinely comedic, no modern romance can hold a torch to the banter that comes out of these books! I can’t wait to get into Francesca’s story now, having heard both Eloise and Francesca’s stories may be explored in this third season! #bridgerton #bookishgirl #bookstagramaustralia #cottagecorestyle #cozycore #fairycore #booksinnature

“...emotions had to become my past... in order to give me a future.” “‘To share your story is a choice. Don’t underestimate the healing that can come from daring not to suffer alone.’” “‘It was an accident, Myrthe. But you can only carry that shame for so long; otherwise it will destroy you.’ ‘How do I release it?’ ‘You give it up. You give it to the Well water inside you. It created your Talent; it is helping write your story. Let it write healing into it.’ ‘So it wrote in my mistakes too?’ ‘No, you did. Living life with a Talent is sharing a pen with the Well. You both get to write your story, but the longer you live, the more you’ll learn to surrender your ink.’” -Mutti “When I first stole that map, I thought it was to break out on my own. To finally be free, reach the Well, write my Wishtress story. Instead, maybe it was so I could be found... To learn that I could be–had been–loved deeply for exactly who I was despite my mistakes, my regrets, my guilt, and even my future. That was real freedom." WISHTRESS BY NADINE BRANDES- YA Christian Fantasy My scattered thoughts on this book: This was a true Christian fantasy heavy on biblical themes. I loved the premise and kept wanting to see what happened next. The story felt unique to me. I was a bit confused in the first 20 pages or so trying to figure out what was going on, especially with dual POVs, but hang in there and things will start to make more sense. This book has a quest feel to it. I was interested to see how the author would keep Myrthe from crying and thereby sealing her own fate, but I think she did a good job with that. However, I do feel like there were some other aspects of the story that were a bit unrealistic. And I would have liked more romance. I just didn't *feel* enough with the romance. My favorite scene was the one with Mutti ❤️. Nadine Brandes is a great writer and I enjoyed the story overall. I think this would be a really good book for a younger YA audience. It had some great reminders of truths tucked into an interesting fantasy story. I'm hoping there will be a sequel at some point. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #bookstagram #YAfantasy #youngadultfiction #booksinnature #booksandnature

Funny Story by Emily Henry has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2024. I'd read her grocery lists if she'd let me. ✨️Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak. Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them? But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?✨️ . . . . #emilyhenrybooks #funnystory #bookcover #booklover #books #bookstagram #booksinnature #readinginnature #reading #midwest

Mieko Kanai - Mild Vertigo (1997/2023 tr. Polly Barton) ★★★☆☆ Natsumi is a housewife and mother, we follow her internal monologue as she goes about the minutiae of her daily life - laundry, shopping, talking to neighbours… This is a stream-of-consciousness novel where the plot is simply the narrator going about her everyday life, and the writing is skilfully immersive without being overwhelming. But ultimately I was never really gripped by the writing or the story (insomuch as there is a story - not something that necessarily bothers me). In fact, at times it made for rather dull reading…which, as a story of the mundanity of the everyday, is perhaps the point, but it does make for a bit of a humdrum read and I was never itching to pick it up. I did enjoy the little details of everyday life, such as the things sold in the supermarket, the way the beds are set out or the dispatching of young kids unaccompanied on trains - I’m always fascinated by such cultural insights (and it’s something I love about translated fiction). It was also fairly interesting to see the societal expectations and experience of a housewife and mother in 1990s Japan. It’s tempting to think how different (or not, in some aspects) Natsumi’s life would be now with the connectivity afforded by mobile phones and the internet. An immersive, if slightly dull, internal monologue of a Tokyo housewife and mother’s mundane everyday life. Have you read this one? 🦈

Atef Abu Saif (Ed.) - The Book of Gaza (2014, tr. various) [Short stories] ★★★★☆ A collection of a dozen short stories written by a range of Gazan authors, painting a complex portrait of the city and strip. As with any collection of short stories, particularly when it involves a variety of authors, some of the stories worked better for me than others. But the range of authors also means that the stories cover a cross-section of Gazan society, and together, they draw a rich and diverse portrait of Gaza and its many inhabitants - a bittersweet, particularly poignant one given that every location mentioned has almost certainly been razed by this point. I found Abu Saif’s introduction very interesting - it gives context to the stories and authors, explaining the different waves of short story writers over time. Some of these stories are recent, some first published several decades ago, and I would have greatly appreciated a little note at the start of each story stating when it was written or first published. It would situate the story in time (not always obvious) but also help to compare the stories, what has and hasn’t changed over time. Yes, the reader can trawl the copyright page to figure it out, but it would be a simple inclusion that wouldn’t interrupt the flow of reading. (Obviously this is an extremely minor quibble.) A collection of short stories that weave a rich, diverse and poignant portrait of Gaza - now a testament to a fraction of what has been lost. Have you read this collection? Or any of the other books in this “The Book of…” series? 🦈

📖 = Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kvame Adjei-Brenyah. 🏞️ = Jernhatten, Molsbjerge, Denmark. “However, through your participation in the CAPE program you may earn your exoneration and be released into the public, but that is unlikely.” Chain-Gang All-Stars is an amazingly written piece of literary fiction about a dystopia where prisoners are made to fight in death matches with the outcome of maybe becoming free - but as seen in the above quote most of them simply get killed throughout the years it takes to completely ‘win’ and therefore be freed. We follow multiple characters both male and female and of multiple races who are apart of this program which is live-streamed across a future America in the profit-raising program CAPE. Some of these characters are far in the program and close to being freed while we see other characters reasons for joining the program which gives a better understanding of the program. “Or rather she was exhausted by the brutality that was so ubiquitous in American culture.” One of the things I thought was really great about this book were the footnotes, which both told the stories of the prisoners killed, what they were imprisoned for but also a little something random about them, but also told real-life statistics about the American prison system that were truly eye-opening and shows the reader just how terrible the system is and gives us a real idea of how a system like the one in the book could actually come about. “People wanted to see people killed by other people, not snake bites.” For me the book ended too soon despite it being 400 pages and I would love to get another look into this world. The ending wasn’t quite what I imagined and although I definitely get the authors reasoning for that ending it did leave me with a feeling of being unfinished as there were so many more things I wanted to explore about the program and the characters in it. Definitely look at the trigger warnings before reading this as it does feature murder, blood, suicide, racism and other possible triggers. Have you read this? If so what did you think? If not does this make you want to read it? 📖

(Werbung - selbst gekauft) Medusa lebt. Heute.

Everyone who has read The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley: I have a quest for you! I’m trying to get my husband to read it and need some help! He read Sunshine and wasn’t a fan, but enjoyed Chalice. I think The Blue Sword would be even more up his alley and the audiobook is currently free on hoopla where we live! If you’ve listened to the audiobook, tell me about the reader! Did you like or dislike them? Did they portray the characters well? Do you recommend the audiobook? And just having read it in general: comment what you love about it! Feel free to go all out and rave about it! (Or rant if you hated it, although I’ve not met someone who has yet! I’m open to all perspectives!) Give him some good reasons to pick it up! I know he’s going to enjoy it when he does! You all have gotten me to read so many fabulous books, so I’m hoping your special skills will transfer to getting him to pick it up as well! #thebluesword #robinmckinley #books #booklover #booknerd #bookobsessed #bookhoarder #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookish #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #bookishpic #fantasy #magic #fantasybooks #favoriteauthor #cozyreads #coverlove #bookrecommendations #booksinnature #booksoutside #brightbookdrearyday #usedbooks #oldbooksmell

Priya Hein - Riambel (2023) ★★★★☆ 15-year-old Noemi must leave school to work for the wealthy De Grandbourg family - the difference between their wealthy suburb and her slum is stark, and she finds herself dreaming of an alternative future for herself… At 151 pages, this is a tiny book that packs a punch - Hein touches on Mauritian history but especially shows us the racist legacy of that history, colonialism and slavery. Slavery might have been abolished, but the extreme inequality remains, and a sense of ownership and lack of consequences lingers amongst the privileged whites. Plus ça change… this is not a story of hope. I enjoyed the book and loved the recipes tucked within the pages - they made me salivate, and food does really give the feel of a place - but the brief, snapshot-style chapters didn’t quite come together cohesively enough for me to truly love the story. That and the intensity of the teenage angst - it was well-written and believable (and frustrating to read), but, to be perfectly honest, I simply do not have the energy for teenage angst at the moment (which is definitely a case of it’s me, not the book). An atmospheric coming-of-age story anchored within the racist legacy of Mauritius’ colonial history, told in snapshots. Have you read Riambel? 🦈 PS - This cover 😍 The blue trees in the back, which I’ve always called Traveller’s Trees, are one of my favourite trees - they store rain water in the criss-cross part (can you tell I’m not a botanist? 😂) and you can pull the leaf stems downwards to access it (hence the name)

A book, a favorite author, and a yummy breakfast bake. Simply the Best is the latest by one of my favorite contemporary romance authors, Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Over a few decades I’ve read all of her books and her sports related ones about the Chicago Stars 🌟 professional football team are always fun. In Simply the Best we start with Rory, a gifted chocolate maker who makes questionable decisions and her prickly relationship with her younger brother, the quarterback of the Stars. When a neighbor is murdered she must join forces with Brett, her brother’s agent, to keep him out of jail. This book made me want to go to a chocolate shop and try all of the flavors! Maybe that can be a Mother’s Day activity. Or if you want a gift for your mom, this book paired with some fancy chocolates would definitely do the trick. And, as a bonus, I made this Almond-Berry French Toast Bake today and it was absolutely delicious. It tastes a lot like a French toast casserole, but better. As a matter of fact, it would also be a perfect thing to serve on Mother’s Day. Highly recommend. I used blueberries instead of raspberries, gluten free bread for regular, and almond milk instead of 2%. #bookstagram #books #booksta #bookstack #bookstagrammer #booksandarecipe. #susanelizabethphillips #booksbooksbooks #booksandfood #booksinnature #romancebooks #recipe #recipes #gfdf

The Fortune Teller’s Prophecy by Lally Pia⁣ ⁣ Thanks @booksparks and @shewritespress for the #gifted copy. This released on 4/30 - happy pub week!🥳⁣ ⁣ Quick synopsis: A military coup in Ghana leads to the closure of Pia’s medical school, and she is stranded thousands of miles away from home. A mountain of obstacles ensue, but Pia perseveres to accomplish her dream (and a Sri Lankan priest’s prediction) of becoming a “Doctor of Doctors”.⁣ ⁣ My thoughts: This book wins the prize for most engaging first sentence of a book, maybe ever. It instantly grabbed my attention. As the story progressed, we follow the author’s life and the wild twists and turns that entailed - her journey took her across the globe and she had multiple career paths before she ultimately fulfilled the prophecy. While a little wordy at times, this story is why I love memoirs - showing someone’s journey and perseverance to get where they are today.⁣ ⁣ What book are you starting off with in May and do you recommend it? Do you have a favorite memoir?⁣ ⁣ #springpopup #fortunetellersprophecy #booksandplants #booksinnature #readingtime #newreleasebooks #readinglife #bookwormsofinstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofig

🌿A P R I L W R A P U P🌿 I have finished my exams and have two papers between me and becoming a 3L, which omfg can you believe it? Seems like just yesterday I was having meltdowns about taking the LSAT 🥲 This month’s reads are brought to you by LibroFM and horny romance novels. I was ecstatic to see them in the ALC list and gobbled both novels up as quickly as I could before I went back to endlessly reading about the Constitution (not as fun). BOOKS 5⭐️ Funny Story by Emily Henry* How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang** *thank you @librofm, @prhaudio, and @berkleyromance for the ALC **thank you @librofm, @harperaudio, and @avonbooks for the ALC [ID: a white hand holds an open book in front of a stone wall wing over it. Adam Silveran huippusuosittu Lopussa molemmat k᝼olevat (WSOY 2023, suom. Kirja saatu arvostelukappaleena @lastenjanuortenkirjat_wsoy, kiitos! En antanut suosion vaikuttaa ennakko-odotuksiini, olenhan kirjan laittanut Goodreadsissa lukulistalle jo syyskuussa 2017 (kuusi päivää kirjan ilmestymisen jälkeen), sillä sen juoni sekä hahmot vaikuttivat kiinnostavilta. Lukukokemus oli kuitenkin pienoinen pettymys, vaikka halusin pitää tästä enemmän. Kirjan nimi paljastaa, mitä tarinassa tulee tapahtumaan: sen päähenkilÜt väistämättÜmästi k᝼olevat lopussa. Ihmiset, jotka alkavan vuorokauden aikana tulevat k᝼olemaan, saavat keskellä yÜtä puhelun K᝼olinhetkeltä. Kukaan ei tiedä tarkkaa kelloaikaa, jolloin k᝼olema tapahtuu, heillä on siis aikaa minuuteista aina seuraavaan keskiyÜhÜn asti tehdä kaikki se, mitä he haluavat. PäähenkilÜinä on kaksi latinopoikaa. #kirjagramsuomi #yakirjavinkit #luelanua #adamsilvera #lopussamolemmatkuolevat #theybothdieattheend #oululukee #booksoutofdoors #booksinthewild #booksinnature
