New postpartum class on the schedule! Every Tuesday 3:30-4:45 pm, starting May 7. This is an all levels postpartum yoga class, to help all practitioners in their postpartum journey. These classes focus on the specific needs of postpartum for parents who lift, carry and feed their babies, those who often feel the pain of the repetitive and long-held positions. We focus on restoring alignment in the body, strengthening and toning while increasing flexibility of muscle and the mind. May pose of the month is Dead Bug pose! I like to sing “La cucaracha” 🪳 Do you know it? Makes them laugh every time however I don’t like to encourage them to end any bugs life, but sometimes they just find themselves on their backs. My son loves that song! Mindfulness Monday post! Mindfulness is being thrown around in so many reels, convos, etc and that’s a good thing! But what is mindfulness really? It’s having awareness in the present moment. Looking in someone’s eyes as you pass them by and saying good morning with intention. Tasting each bite of your food and enjoying the flavors as you chew. It’s painting outdoors and noticing how different colors mix to make another or how the lead or rock leave different markings than the paint brushes do. With little ones and adults it’s great to remove as many distractions as possible and focus on one task. Usually if it’s outdoors or involves being creative, they can win at being mindful for that moment. Resting our forehead on the floor (table or our hands) we are stimulating the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve helps regulate our nervous system. When we apply pressure on it, it helps lower blood pressure and slow our heart rate. It also helps decrease levels of cortisol and reduce tension. Child’s pose also allows the opportunity to draw our senses inward. We always recommend taking a break in Child’s pose during classes to tap into these benefits. Another way to help stimulate the healthy function of the vagus nerve is through deep, slow breathing. Breathe more slowly aiming for six breaths per minute. Breathing more deeply, from the belly, thinking about expanding your abdomen and widening your rib cage as you inhale. Try to make your exhales longer than inhales. Pop your phone down, come onto the ground into Child’s pose, reset your forehead down and start to focus on your breath. Childspose... Mijn favoriete houding voor een stretch van de onderrug of wanneer ik me gestressed voel. Het heet niet childspose voor niets; in ongeveer dezelfde houding zat je ook in de baarmoeder. Het doet je denken aan die veilige plek toen je nog niet geboren was. Breng je knieën wat uit elkaar, wanneer je buik in de weg zit en het niet prettig voelt. Wil je er een stretch naar je schouders en bovenrug aan toevoegen? Most of these officers are coming off shift. One is going on shift. Yoga is such a great way to start or end a shift. It helps process stress, but also enhances performance and builds resilience. Today we started class in childs pose to find a few moments of grounding and to focus on tactical breathwork. We always start with three part breath, (breathing in to the belly first, then ribs, then chest, breathing out from chest, ribs to belly.) Three part breath as the foundation of the whole training to access the nervous system, for breath preservation and to take control of what we can. Before we started physical drills, we added in some recovery breath (in for 3 and out for 5.) We finished the class with a Belly Breath Countdown Neuroreset and stillness to allow all of the benefits of the practice to sink into the tissues of the body and subconscious mind. I’m proud of these officers for utilizing this tool that we have right at the department. #yoga — the practice to unite consciousness within oneself [mind + body] this particular practice led me to recognize the feeling of rushing in life. yes — no regrets. no bearer of resentments. simple acknowledgment. in stiffness. in shallow breathing. in lack of synchronicity in breath and movement. the beauty of not bearing resentments or regrets with myself is holding space for accountability for my decisions — giving self compassion. rushing gets us nowhere fast, maybe even stuck in a situation we weren’t quite ready for. and when we’re out of alignment or we sin [whatever your faith path is] the consequence is that stuck or lacking feeling. in this yoga practice — in #childspose — I took a moment to recognize I am the reason why I am where I am. and now redirected on the journey to [slow down] and incorporate more #ease in movement. all #movement. matching breath and body. one breath, one movement. the reason yoga meant so much to me in the first place. the environment benefits from a centered being and those people closest to you deserve to experience that. all I have is all I need. as above, so below. #takecare
