May pose of the month is Dead Bug pose! I like to sing “La cucaracha” 🪳 Do you know it? Makes them laugh every time however I don’t like to encourage them to end any bugs life, but sometimes they just find themselves on their backs. My son loves that song! So I’ll be incorporating it in class tomorrow with this pose. Mindfulness Monday post! Mindfulness is being thrown around in so many reels, convos, etc and that’s a good thing! But what is mindfulness really? It’s having awareness in the present moment. Looking in someone’s eyes as you pass them by and saying good morning with intention. Tasting each bite of your food and enjoying the flavors as you chew. It’s painting outdoors and noticing how different colors mix to make another or how the lead or rock leave different markings than the paint brushes do. With little ones and adults it’s great to remove as many distractions as possible and focus on one task. Usually if it’s outdoors or involves being creative, they can win at being mindful for that moment. The best way to teach children to love and respect the environment and others is by being an example. They see us using reusable bags, and picking up plastic bottles on our walk, and helping someone in need. Ahimsa is one of the Yamas you can read about in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It means practicing to choose kindness and care everywhere the time and not harming with our actions or thoughts. Let’s teach children at a young age and hope this kindness spreads. The more good humans we raise the more good radiates out to the world. My son Andrew is my inspiration. He reminds me to put my phone away, to practice yoga, and to put my feet up and sing about everything. Children ultimately live in the moment and we can learn so much from them. He’s almost 3 years old and already so in tune. International Kid’s yoga day is Friday April 5! Here are some fun and simple yoga poses you can have your kids try out. Maybe they love it and you make it a daily thing. I’m glad they made this a holiday. Slowing down helps with emotional regulation and gets children in tune with their bodies and minds. This provides more patience and clarity… something we keep seeing them as they age going away because of how fast they receive information and social media channels. Yoga is a gift. I hope this day encourages parents, teachers, care givers to try out yoga for their kids and see if they like it. Friday 4/5 is International Kids yoga day and we will be celebrating our 9th year. More yoga, more mindfulness in our play with our children and less and less and less is what I’m promoting. It’s so important now to slow down more than ever. Technology, society, peer pressures, THE WORLD is a lot for their not fully developed prefrontal cortex. Providing them with a foundation in yoga can allow them to take a seat and a few breaths to help them respond to anything that may come their way. When I see their energy levels are high and they are getting louder during class I invite them to show me how they blow out birthday candles 🎂 and then invite them to do Childs pose.
