This past weekend, I had the privilege to go to Rosarito, Mexico, with @thecrossinglv. Myself and 120 good men built six houses in just two days. The family I was fortunate enough to serve was a family of four. They lived together in a one bedroom space that consisted of their kitchen, bedroom, and living room with their two children. The average monthly income of the household is 120 a week. As hard as that is to comprehend, that is the reality of so many people. The little boy you see is around the same age as my son. Words can not describe how happy this little guy was. While we were building the house. He kept saying, "mi casita, mi casita." Which means "my house." This experience gave me a whole new perspective on life. I encourage anyone reading this to serve others when you can. It was May 2010, I had been drinking all day at the beach followed by a visit to a local bar before I got behind the wheel of my SUV. I don’t have any memory of the drive itself, only that I was in the turning lane of the entrance to the fast food restaurant I planned on going to — before I was pulled over. I was taken to jail and woke up in the medical unit after I had threatened suicide. This was my third and final arrest, and what I know now as the greatest opportunity I was ever given. After my release, I was so angry at the Fire Marshall who called the police on me. It was easier to blame someone else for my mistakes. And today, I’ve written this unknown caller more gratitude letters than I can count. It isn’t lost on me that they saved my life, and possibly someone else’s on the road that night. One more minute and I would have made it to the restaurant. A single minute that proves timing is always as exactly as it should be, and it’s completely out of our control. When we are in the shit and we don’t know why, it’s tough to hear that it will get better. But damn, if it isn’t the truth. The catch is, it only gets better when we take back control by taking personal responsibility — owning that we are where we are because of our own choices. It’s heavy to look yourself in the eyes, especially in a rusted jailhouse mirror. But it’s also the most freeing choice I’ve ever made. So, no matter where you are right now — know that everything can change in an instant. When life, business and parenting feels heavy — know that hard times aren’t meant to break you, they are meant to show you who you can become. One of the most perfect (long) lunchtimes I've ever had - this litter-pick honestly was life-affirming stuff. I'd just had a nature programme on in the background while doing the day job, and it had really reminded me of the need to just keep taking action (my mantra is basically: 'the forest helps me breathe; I must help it breathe too'). I'm also keen to clean up waterways (this inevitably has its challenges - for one: I have no wellies; for two: I can't swim, so generally have low-level anxiety around water) so nearby Wanstead Park immediately presented itself as my destination, ticking both forest and water boxes. The plan as always was to clear as much rubbish as possible from around the perimeter to prevent it from rolling or blowing into the main natural (actually human-made in this case) feature at some point. As soon as I arrived I was reminded of the challenge of the recent undergrowth explosion - great to see nature nature-ing, but also depressing knowing there's stuff buried in there invisibly for the next few months - but because the water level has been soooo low here in recent times (again, not exactly an environmental positive, but with an upside from a litter-picker's perspective) at least I could get down to the 'water's edge' such that it is, and reach some of the crap that's been lobbed into the water at some point. Every plastic bottle or shredded can that otherwise would be floating around harming the water-based wildlife felt like it counted treble. So why so life-affirming? Well, 1. obviously it's always satisfying both helping nature and improving the aesthetic of an area, but also 2. it was the most glorious day weather-wise, so it was lovely to just enjoy a slower pace rather than just running around as usual, and 3. I got to really appreciate the biodiversity all around - loads of birdsong, more butterfly species than I remember seeing for a long time, and the perfect opportunity to try out a wild flower identification app I recently downloaded. A life worth saving… I found this guy splayed out in the middle of the trail. There were no signs of life and ants were already circling his body. His face was caked with mud. Something made me think he had a chance. I carried a lifeless body for over half a mile circled in my hand. I kept thinking I felt twitches, but thought again it was my imagination. Suddenly I felt a jerk and I knew he might be savable. We finished the last half mile home and he was immediately placed in a water bath to attempt to hydrate him. That did the trick. He promptly jumped on my arm, ran up my hoodie, and perched on my bun. He was removed, lectured about personal space boundaries, soaked a bit longer, and placed on my wall to go finish out his little lizard life. What does it matter that there is now one more lizard in the world? Probably not much. But to him? I have no idea about lizard consciousness or awareness. But it was a raising of the love and energy of the world that no matter who or how small, every single life has profound meaning. If one can care this much about a lizard, how much more can we care about the humans in our life that we love. Do good today and make a difference. Everyone gets triggered and we all respond differently, kids and adults alike. It's important to understand our own triggers and do our own work in order to help our children. The way we react and respond to our kids can kick them into one of the trauma responses, even if it wasn't our intention. Being able to recognize where they're at will help us help them. I have learned it is so hard to show up for our kids when we ourselves are stuck in a trauma response. When taking a step back and getting a break isn't available, co-regulating can help pull us out and deepen our connection with our kids. Another way we can model emotional regulation. SUPPORT SOLAR IRRIGATION at the Lnk.Bio!🌱💦🌞 GRID is raising $5,000 by the end of May to bring an off-grid pole-mounted solar-powered drip irrigation system to the Centeno Family in Jinotega, Nicaragua. The system consists of 2.8kW of photovoltaic modules, a water pump that moves water into a water tank mounted on a metal structure, and drip irrigation tubes to feed water to the plants on a regular basis. The Centeno family members have been farmers all their lives, cultivating beans, corn, tomatoes, and jalapeño peppers. The family currently waters their one-acre farm using a gas-powered pump. Solar will replace the pump, saving the family money, displacing gasoline, and reducing air and noise pollution at the farm. Farming is a year-round commitment for this family. They strive to diversify their crops and work together as a family. The Centeno family has observed their fellow producers have exponential growth due to solar-powered irrigation and they aspire to have the same impact on their farm. Solar will save them money and the value of solar can provide access to better financing so they can implement more advanced agro-ecological practices. Celebrating my child’s achievements, no matter how small, boosts both their confidence and mine. Being flexible and accommodating when making plans or arrangements demonstrates true understanding of our unique situation. Challenges helped your evolution, so instead of living in the trap, free yourself by seeing the lessons your challenges are giving you. ✨Here’s a simple example of your first challenge as a child: As a baby, when you started eating solid foods, you were initially fed by a parent and one day, you thought I am going to feed myself, but your face, the bib, the table or the floor got the food and not your mouth. You did not give up and kept at it until one day, you eventually got a crumb in your mouth, pushing you to get more. If you had given up the first time you did not get the food in your mouth, you would not have learnt to feed yourself as a child and would have relied on your parents to feel you.
