Up at 2:45 am - on the road at 3:05. Teed off 8:20 am California Amateur Q, finished at 1:00 pm. Home For Dinner! 4th tournament back since the injury/recovery in 2020. 8 years since last competition before that. Week two in the books, scoring improved greatly from last week. Rancho North is Hard and I’m always happy making Pars. (76 +4) My adjusted Vardon grip is definitely the game changer for me. I’ve always interlocked. Having my entire left hand on the Golf club is an entirely new, and exciting feel! Under the heat, since I messed my grip up trying to hit it far as a teenager , I’ve always had a slipping sensation at the top of my backswing. As Mr Ben Hogan put it: my grip was poor and “broke down” at the top. A proper grip is absolutely essential to powerful, consistent striking. Addressing my Achilles Heel and realizing Mr Hogan probably knows better then I, 😂 is instilling trust in my game again. I’m pumped to be back at it, with no pain finally! 8 hours driving, 5.5 hours golfing, and I could go another round! (All thanks to eating more Plants, and less meat, basically eliminating inflammation in my back). So it's still more wattbike action. Recently received the diagnosis of sciatica, adding another layer to the ongoing back-related challenges I’ve been facing. This setback means stepping away from my regular workout routine for an indefinite period—weeks, months, or perhaps even years. Life can be so harsh. I speak out for everyone grappling with adversity while striving to pursue their goals. Trying to maintain a positive outlook is tough, especially for someone like me, I love to go out, give my best and push boundaries. Dealing sciatica mentally has been challenging and alongside physical setbacks has made the past weeks particularly challenging. It’s hard to remain positive when even standing up feels like a struggle. But Iam a competitive person, I’m determined to see how far I can push myself, focusing on what I can control amid this setback. It’s time for recovery, rehabilitation, and resetting my mindset. Travelling last month in April, we decided to settle down in Da Nang, Vietnam. So I got back to my weights program and pushed myself in each session. 💪 We planned to move hotels to a place closer to the beach and to the heart of Da Nang. On this day, I did 5x5 heavy deadlifts of 137.5kgs (see image). I finished the program and felt great. I didn’t stretch after the session because I had a tight schedule to move hotels and then work. I put on my 25kg backpack on and we all moved to our new hotel. The move went smoothly. 🎒 I was on my way out the door to work, I bent over to pickup my laptop when FUCK!!! Trinh screams, “What’s wrong?”. I hurt my back. I screamed FUCK because I have a history of back injuries and I knew I’d be out for at least a week. The week was torturous. I couldn’t move. I felt so helpless. When i would move to go to the bathroom, it was so painful. Especially at night, I’d need both my sons to help me out (see image). Brian, my eldest said “Dad, is this what you’re going to be like when you’re old?” Ever since that incident 5 weeks ago and Brian asking that question, I don’t take my movement for granted anymore. I stretch at least 30 minutes everyday and 5-10 minutes after my workout. I walk most mornings before I start my day (see image). Plus, I use every opportunity I can to move. We walk rather than Uber, I get up from my work desk at least 2 times every hour. 🚶‍♂️💼 I tell you this story because too often we see people sit in front of a desk for very long periods of time (see image) and taking their movement for granted. You don’t know how good you have it until you lose it! We have our 6kgs in 6 weeks program starting next week where we give our members a plan to help them increase movement into their busy schedules. A new week, a new activewear outfit! 💪 So most of you will know I injured my back badly 5 weeks ago. I couldn’t move well at all and felt like I was in labour for 9 days. My rehabilitation is going well and has mostly been Pilates mobility and strengthening exercises and I’ve started using the Theragun daily as I’ve now got referred pain in my left, hip, groin and glute. Yesterday I started on supported weight training exercises using the leg machines which went well. (I couldn’t do those last week) Still a way to go but happy with the progress I’ve made so far. A little update from my side ⬇️ I’m very grateful to have recovered from my back injury that prevented my last winter expedition. Now it’s back to training – but to be honest it’s really tough to get in shape again. I still feel the aftermath of not being able to train for a while, and I need to take it very slow to get back to my normal high volume of training. Luckily I have a lot of training and projects coming up that will help get me back on track 🤩 ▪️My next trip starts at the end of May – I’ll be going to Patagonia to cross the southern Patagonian ice cap. ▪️And then, from the middle of July until the beginning of August, I’ll be in Kyrgyzstan where I’ll be climbing Peak Lenin with my Altitude Academy where I teach skills for high altitude mountaineering. This time there will also be some flying involved together with some of the participants. 🍉🍋Update🍒🫐 So I’ve had a few injuries recently that have had a big affect on my training and consequently my head space & confidence ☁️ ☹️I’ve had tendonitis in my knees on & off for about 12 years, and in January it flared up really badly. I’ve done squats once since January and have had really broken up and limited training, restricted to movements that don’t aggravate my knee. ☹️I’ve also recently really injured my back, lifting something at work. I work on a farm so it’s really difficult for me to properly rest after an injury to recover. I’ve been on strong pain killers for about 4 days now, and just hoping it’s something that heals quickly. ☹️All in all my training has been shit since new year, and I’m still on the bench for now so it’s really impacted my mental health. But I’m hoping that with some rest & recovery that by the start of July I’ll be back in the game & ready to build back everything I’ve lost. Not exactly the healthiest options for breakfast but at least I've got my fibre in for the morning. Today is gonna be a relaxing day for me, because my back is completely wrecked. I had a feeling the abs workouts might do this, but Im gonna keep on with them. But not today. I'll still do my last workout for this week of Short, Strong & Spicy, it's upper body so I should be fine, I just need to be careful. But I need a day of taking pain relief before I do that so I'll do my workout right before I make dinner, by that time I should have more movement. Right now I can't move my left leg 🤦🏻‍♀️ And I'll see how my back is then before I decide if I'm doing abs today. I might just need to take some pain relief and loosen up a bit. Could just be a pinched nerve. Also, I stepped on the scales this morning, I've gained a little this week so far, but I've made such progress in my workouts. When I started, my arms were sore just using 2.5kg with overhead lifts and even bicep curls. It's crazy because I was lifting so much heavier before I got sick. But I'm back at the beginning again 🤷‍♀️ This week though, 5kg is too light so I'll be going up again in weight next week, which I'm super happy about. Yes, I desperately want to lose weight, but more than anything, I want to be strong and mobile again, and if I'm losing inches, then the scales don't matter as much. This was last Tuesday and Wednesday the last two days I was able to golf. It's taken me until now to feel okay paying these knowing I'm going to be without my happy place, and favourite hobby for quite some time still here. My back is not healing anywhere close to as fast as I hoped, and am still in a lot of pain so sharing stuff like this has been too much for me, but I have to start coping and accepting somewhere. It's extremely frustrating knowing what I'm missing, but a couple of good things have come of this. It has given me a good enough reason (for my mind to allow it) to get a shower chair which I've honestly needed for awhile because of POTS but couldn't justify to myself. This time has also made me realise that I need to start investing in self healing again, and that includes finding a healthy relationship so have started looking on dating apps again. What I thought was my hip feeling off was actually the beginning of my back flaring up again. Minor flare up, luckily, but still not fun. 👎 Took it easy this morning and avoided any top loading (my workout is listed below), ended with a moderate speed incline walk (keeping moving during flare ups is key with my specific back issues), foam rolling and I actually stretched. I know - who am I actually doing the things I recommend like stretching?! 🤣 With that said - not mad at the leg pump I still somehow got. Never skip leg day - right? **Do NOT still go to the gym when injured unless cleared to do so. I am not recommending that in any way. It’s not worth the risk of injuring yourself further by further damaging the injured body part(s) or through incorrect form due to compensating for the affected muscles** What I did today from my list of go-tos with my specific lower back issue (and after consulting with professionals when the back issue was discovered): •leg press •leg extension •hamstring curl •glute drive machine (light weight, ensure strap is tight, and focus on activating glutes only - NOT the LOWER BACK) •back extension (very light weight. Thinking more along the lines of keeping the muscle active and less strength and hypertrophy. Again, focusing on glute activation over swinging my back muscles) •seated calf extensions Followed by incline walk or elliptical at a low pace For all - listen to your body. If it hurts, lower the weight/incline or STOP Then STRETCH. I think I have been feeling better, even my physiotherapy mentioned that I looked better hahah getting back to the gym also with some upper body and legs exercise I must make a habit to stretch also.
