The Witches of Eastwick, John Updike. First edition (stated). Dust Jacket: Near Fine. An unclipped jacket, in a mylar protective wrapper which was designed by John Updike himself. Hardcover: Near Fine. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1984. No writing or markings in this beautifully preserved edition, 307 pp. Dark lavender cloth covered boards with; silver lettering and graphics on front panel, gilt and silver lettering and silver graphics on spine. $35 Updike writes about a small New England town in the late 1960's, where three witches lived. Alexandra Spofford, a sculptress, Jane Smart, a cellist, and Sukie Rougemont, the local gossip columnist. Their supernatural gifts were intriguing, to say the least. Divorced but hardly celibate, content but always ripe for adventure, one day all three witches found themselves under the spell of a new man in town, Darryl Van Horne. One of Updike's most successful novels, both as literature and popularity. This was his 28th book and 11th novel. A Near Fine first printing of the first Trade edition (preceded only by a privately published Franklin Library edition). The story was adapted by Hollywood (Warner Brothers, 1987, starring Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Veronica Cartwright), and Updike followed this success with a second narrative (sequel) The Widows of Eastwick in 2008. The film was directed by George Miller. #johnupdike #johnupdikesociety #johnupdikebooks #johnupdikestory #johnupdikewitchesofeastwick #firstedition #firsteditionbooks #firsteditionbooksforsale #bookaddict #booktomoview #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing #dustjacketartwork #georgemiller #georgemillerdirector #jacknicholson #cher #susansarandon #booklovers #thewidowsofeastwick #bookstagram #michellepfieffer #newenglandtown #newenglandliving #bookcollector #johnupdikebestie #johnupdikefan

#currentlyreading Generation Dread. I received this book through a giveaway from @queerbrownvegan and am finding it to be incredibly powerful, challenging and centering. This work highlights how eco-anxiety is a healthy starting response to the realities of our world. This work highlights folks grappling with the decision to have children, how racism and capitalism have allowed for environmental injustice to be embedded in current practices, climate crises disproportionately affecting folks in the Global South, and how to survive and potentially thrive in the changing world. I am about half way through and am am glad to have a chance to center my feelings and through related to the climate crisis. #bookstagram #generationdread #brittwray #alfredaknopfpublishing

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨ 📚 LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER, by Kimberly McCreighton ✨ Synopsis: Cleo’s strained and estranged relationship with her mother, Katrina (aka “Kat”), is thrown into a whirlwind when she reluctantly arrives in her childhood home in Brooklyn for dinner with her mom, only to find her missing with food burning in the oven. As Cleo rushes to figure out what happened to her mom, the daughter finds out her mom hasn’t lived the tidy life of being happily married and having a successful career as a cooperate lawyer. Katrina’s life has been so much more dangerous and risky than Cleo ever knew. ✨ My thoughts: I really like LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER, because it illustrates the sort of complex but loving relationship that can exist between mother and daughter. And, I appreciate how the story wrapped up. The struggle I had was, I wasn’t pulled into the story until a third to half way in. The novel also perhaps a few too many red herrings. I give LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5). Good evening, dear readers! CJ is back with a review of Toni Morrison’s 1970 debut novel The Bluest Eye. This is the second Morrison novel I’ve read (the first was Beloved), and I know with even more certainty that I have to read the rest of her works. Set in the author’s hometown of Lorain, Ohio, we follow Morrison’s fractured narration—splitting between the first-person of Claudia and the third-person of every other major player—as Black 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove fervently prays for her eyes to turn blue. The novel is about beauty, the U.S.’s obsession with eurocentric beauty standards, and what those standards can do when they are inflicted upon society’s most vulnerable: a young girl. Morrison’s writerly ethos to be considering and considerate shines through every word. She fully explores characters and their motivations, and carefully depicts horrific acts while considering her reader with delicate use of language. Whenever I read Morrison, I am reminded why the word “author” has roots in the word “authority.” I recommend finding a copy that includes Morrison’s 1993 afterword, as it provides insight into the author’s intention with her story and how she feels about the work 23 years after its publication. The Bluest Eye is not an emotionally easy read, but it is graceful in its language and important in its questions; if you’ve been wanting to read Toni Morrison’s work but weren’t sure where to start, The Bluest Eye is a good place. #thebluesteye #tonimorrison #tonimorrisonthebluesteye #plume #penguinbooks #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing #holtrinehartandwinston #ashelftalkersreview #shelftalkers #bookreview #bookstagram

The More You Give, is a beautiful story of intergenerational familial love. In this story a grandmother provides her grandchild with unbounded love. She gave him her time, her wisdom and unconditional love. This love is the kind of love that keeps giving long after the grandmother is gone. The beauty of this story is that the gifts this grandmother shares are the gifts of time, knowledge, connection with nature and patience so he can appreciate the changes within a forest. As he grows up and has his own child, he finds he has so much to give that again the love gets passed on to the next generation. Kenny G. and Jack, you are so loved. I am not sure you will ever really understand the depth of my love but hopefully the love that I give provides you with some intangible gifts so that one day you too can pass on your love and give others the gifts of knowledge, traditions and kindness. The legacy I hope to leave you with is one that you appreciate the people and beauty that surround you and that you find ways to leave your mark on others by demonstrating kindness and giving. Remember to give without remembering and always receive without forgetting! I can promise you this, the love and joy you give me I will never forget! One more quote, “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving!”❤️—Amy Carmichael #bubbyslove #raisingreaders #picturebookswithapurpose #lovegrows #themoreyougive #givelove #intergenerationallove #abundanceoflove #grandmotherslegacy #kindnessmatters #unconditionallove #marcycampbell #francescasanna #alfredaknopfpublishing #randomhousechildrensbooks

The Fall, Albert Camus. First edition, second printing (stated). Dust Jacket: Very Good. An unclipped jacket with original price $3.00 on inside flap. Author photo on rear jacket by Henri Cartier-Besson. The jacket has some general wear. There is chipping on top/bottom of spine and a small, missing piece on a corner of the book. Hardcover: Very Good+ New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1957. No writing or markings in the book, 147 pp. $90 . . The story, set in Amsterdam, consists of a series of dramatic monologues by the self-proclaimed "judge-penitent" Jean-Baptiste Clamence, as he reflects upon his life to a stranger. In what amounts to a confession, Clamence tells of his success as a wealthy Parisian defense lawyer who was highly respected by his colleagues. His crisis, and his ultimate "fall" from grace, was meant to invoke, in secular terms, the fall of man from the Garden of Eden. The Fall explores themes of innocence, imprisonment, non-existence, and truth. This was the authors fifth book. The book was translated from French by Justin O'Brien. Original publication date in France was in 1956. The American edition publication date was February 18, 1957 while the second printing took place on that same month. The original title, published in French, was La Chute. #albertcamus #biblio #bibliophile #firstedition #thefall #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing #booksbooksbooks #alfredaknopfbooks #albertcamusofficial #booklover #booknerd #bookscout #bookcollector #bookcollection #albertcamusbooks #albertcamusbooksareamazing #bookaddict #bookaddiction #justinobrien #lachute #henricartierbesson #henricartierbessonfoundation

This was his first novel after Catch-22 and his third book overall. Published in 1974 by Knopf, this is one of the major works of twentieth century literature. Something Happened is different than Catch-22 in both substance and tone and it is but another example of the incredible talent of this writer. Such an exuberantly beautiful book that pulls us into one girl and her mother's henna tradition. The art is so magically immersive - what a celebration of Hindu life. Just stunning! Meera on the Picturebooking podcast w/ Nadia Saloman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRoXPcJoq_4 @nadiasalomon.author A Garden in My Hands 🫶🏾 written by Meera Sriram illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat "This touching picture book celebrates the custom of applying henna for special occasions through a mother and daughter who share family memories and stories. "There’s a wedding tomorrow! And one little girl sits patiently while her mother tenderly applies intricate, delicate henna designs on her hands. As she does, she shares family stories–about weddings, monsoons, and ancestors long gone. The little girl must be careful to protect her hands as the henna dries–one smudge could ruin a story! After a whole night of anticipation, when the flakes are washed away, what will they reveal?" ★“The text reads like free-verse poetry, skillfully weaving simple, child-friendly language into vivid, multisensory imagery; the child calls the henna “A garden in my hands, / I will tend for days.” Dominated by intricate patterns and hues of purple and green, the art positively sings.” -Kirkus ★“Prabhat’s art juxtaposes fantasy, memory, and reality as Sriram details how “The sweet smell of henna,/ and stories we carry,/ fill us with pride/ of a faraway home.” -Publishers Weekly Meera's page with so many extras! https://meerasriram.com/a-garden-in-my-hands/ https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676079/a-garden-in-my-hands-by-meera-sriram-illustrated-by-sandhya-prabhat/ #meerasriram #sandhyaprabhat #agardeninmyhands #gardeninmyhands #alfredaknopfpublishing #knopfkids #alfredaknopf #borzoibooks #borzoibooks #twogreykittens #twogreykittensbookclub #tgkbclifestyle #picturebookingpodcast #picturebooking #penguinkidsbooks #knopfbfyr #knopfbooksforyoungreaders #randomhousekids

And I just stood there in the fading afternoon light, realizing at seventeen that I was already staring into my past — that the past had a meaning that would always define you. I remember this being one of my first moments nearing adulthood, when I realized how powerful memory was — or at least it was the first time it hurt the most. And there was nothing I could do about the pain of the past — it just settled over me. 🎐 tags: #THEBLUEHOOUR #thebluehour #lorablu #aesthetic #art #beauty #contentcreator #inspiration #libri #letture #leggere #libriletti #bookstagram #theshards #bretaestonellis #breteastonellistheshards #breteastonellisnovel #theshardsquotes #englishquotes #americanliterature #alfredaknopfpublishing #americannovels

I'm starting another two books this week. The first is the new autobiography of the creative music pioneer Henry Threadgill. This is one that I've been anxious to delve into ever since it was first announced. The second book is actually one that I've read several times. It chronicles the important work of Colman McCarthy as he pioneered the bringing of peace studies into high schools. As Coleman states: "Unless we teach our children peace, someone else will teach them violence." Staring at the Sun, Julian Barnes. Stated first American edition. Dust Jacket: Very Good. An unclipped jacket designed by Havier Romero. There is some foxing on jacket borders. Hardcover: Near Fine. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1987. Off-white cloth with red spine and gold lettering on spine. No markings or writing in the book, 197 pp. $34 . . This is the fourth book by Barnes. A novel from the author of the brilliant "Flaubert's Parrot." This novel looks into the life of an 'ordinary' woman, and reveals a world filled with ordinary miracles. The novel begins with a morning on which the sun rises twice. It encompasses a century in the life of Jean Serjeant, from her innocent 1920's girlhood to her flight into the sun in the year 2021. It carries Jean through seemingly unexceptional experiences: growing up and growing old, falling in and out of love, the ceremonies of birth and death. #julianbarnes #books #firstedition #biblio #firsteditionbooks booksbooksbooks #staringintothesun #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing #bookaddiction #miracles #lifesmiracles #bookstoread #booksforsale #buybooksonline #onlinebookstores #onlinebookshops #bookdealer #bookscouts #booksofinstagram #bookstoresofinstagram #bookreview

The Naive & Sentimental Lover, John le Carre. Stated First American Edition. Dust Jacket: Near Fine, unclipped (no price) jacket designed by R.D. Scudellari. In a mylar protective cover. Jacket photograph of Canova's Eros and Psyche by Michel Desjardines. Author photo by Andreas Heumann. Hardcover: Near Fine. Small half inch foxing on flyleaf page, otherwise, no markings or writing in the book, 455 pp. Mustard cloth with silver lettering on front cover and spine. Solid book. $45 This was John le Carre's 6th book. A very handsome, collectible copy. Le Carre's uniquely non-espionage, and semi-autobiographical work. His third novel, “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” (1963), became an international best-seller and remains one of his best-known works. This is not a love story, it is a le Carré love story. The story has autobiographical elements, as it is based on the author's relationship with James and Susan Kennaway following the breakdown of le Carré's first marriage. The novel was published in the same year as his divorce. #johnlecarre #firstedition #sentimentallover #books #booklovers #lecarrenovel #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfbooks #alfredaknopfpublishing #booksbooksbooks #rdscudellari #micheldesjardines #bookstoread #bestbooktoread #mustreadbook #bookstore #bookshop #bookshopping #onlinebooks #bookstoresofinstagram #bookaddiction #bookdealers #bookscouts

A time traveller from a moon colony in the far future investigates strange occurrences throughout the past that might serve as clues as to if the world and the lives we live in it is just a simulation. Well? Are our lives just a simulation? Crazy. Just wow. I never thought that time travel as a theme would be so interesting. But then it might be because it was Emily St. John Mandel who wrote this book. This is actually my first read from this author. Should I read her National Book Award Finalist: Station Eleven? The pacing of the book is perfect and the story structure was inventive. I even like the layout and the size of the text on the pages - I think these details contributed to the engaging reading experience of this story. Somehow this book reminds me of Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr and Candy House by Jennifer Egan. My Rating: Hopefulness: 2.5/5⭐️s Soulfulness: 3/5⭐️s Complexity: 4/5⭐️s Heartbreak : 0/5⭐️s Darkness: 3/5⭐️s #adultfiction #adultfictionbooks #sciencefiction #scifibooks #timetravelfiction #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #borzoibooks #alfredaknopfpublishing

this book. i am not typically a person who rereads books but something about this one was calling out to me. i read it for the first time in junior high, it was one of the first books social media influenced me to buy (among others like the perks of being a wallflower and looking for alaska). i loved it ten years ago, and i loved it even more now that i’m older and understand the history behind it + general german stuff after a decade of also diving into my heavily german ancestry. i love liesel and her spunk. i love hans’ kind heart. i love the dynamic between liesel and rudy. i reaaalllly love and admire the creativity of death as the narrator. the book thief is undeniably a modern classic and one of those books everybody should read at least once in their life. - #books #booksta #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview #minibookreview #bookphotography #booksandplants #reading #thebookthief #markuszusak #historicalfiction #historicalnovel #booksfromthe2000s #booksfromthe00s #00sbooks #2000s #sadbooks #aaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing

Oh friends! It’s been a while. A long while. I feel like I’ve said it a lot this year but where do the days go? Yes, I have been reading. No, I have not been reviewing. Yes, I have had all intentions too. No, I haven’t got passed the intentions stage. So to be kind to my worn out brain, I am going to give some short sharp reviews. “Klara and the sun” by @kazuoishiguro : unusual protagonist (an Artificial Intelligence friend) with a unique perspective on the world. Brings up some big questions around friendship, privilege, technology, parenting and humanity. “The surprising power of a good dumpling” by @onewpc Wai Chim: a debut YA fiction written by an Chinese-American-Australian author. A sensitive exploration of coming of age, family, mental health and wellbeing, teenage pressures and first loves. I cannot express how much I loved this book. “Where the Crawdads sing” by @authordeliaowens : I have avoided this book for so long after trying to read it several times and giving up. Well, I have relented after so many bookish friends promised me it would blow me away. And it did. In the final few pages I do believe my jaw was on the floor. Sensational. And how did I source these treasures? “Klara and the Sun” was gifted from a friend, “The surprising power of a good dumpling” was sent by @secretbookstuff and “Where the Crawdads sing” was borrowed from a street library user. #bookstagram #bookreviews #klaraandthesunkazuoishihuro #thesurprisingpowerofagooddumpling #wherethecrawdadssing #alfredaknopfpublishing #allenandunwin #gpputnamssons #sustainablereading #goodreadschallenge

I took a road trip up to Ottawa this past weekend. While wandering along the streets of the Glebe, we came across Octopus Books, a small, independently owned bookstore. I couldn't help buying a book while we were there but in consideration of my bank account, I did manage to limit myself to just one (a true feat, I assure you). After much deliberation, I am very happy to be adding Gillian Sze’s collection of poems and essays, Quiet Night Think, to my shelves. So far, I have only skimmed its pages but this poem, Fauna, captured my attention while I was browsing titles in the store. I hope everyone had a refreshing long weekend, and I'm curious: what title or author has been the most recent addition to your library? ••• #reading #reader #poetry #book #booklover #bookstagram #bookstore #supportsmallbusiness #writersofinstagram #writer #gilliansze #quietnightthink #ecwpress #alfredaknopf #alfredaknopfpublishing
