The Chalk Giants, one of my fave SF novels of the 70s, is a savage invocation of our connection to the ritual landscape. The cover by Melvyn faithfully illustrates a scene from the story but has much more of a pulp aesthetic than the poetry of Roberts’ prose. Keith Roberts was a gifted illustrator and his sketch on the cover of Foundation (picture 2), although intended for a different novel, captures the atmosphere of the Chalk Giants more effectively.
I love the details in Berkey’s art. I don’t know what the technique is called, but it reminds me of certain styles that digital painters use today. Radio satellite dishes and stone circles are recurring images in Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass - the titles for the tv series feature a satellite dish while the poster for the cinematic release uses a picture of Stonehenge. Similar imagery can be found in The Resurrection Machine, a 1978 novel by Phil Smith. It’s about a satellite transmitter built on a hill top that rekindles an ancient earth force. It’s folk horror rather than science fiction but like Quatermass it uses neolithic sites and satellite dishes to creepy effect.

Hard-boiled science fiction from 1979. Down to a Sunless Sea is a full-on trip into nuclear apocalypse that combines fast-moving action with dystopian speculation. It’s set in 1985 after the ‘Dollar Collapse’ - overconsumption has depleted America’s oil supplies and tanked its economy. Rioting, starvation and social collapse ensue. The novel opens with Jonah Scott piloting an Air Britain flight to New York to pick up American refugees. The UK is still relatively stable due to its supplies of North Sea oil and energy conservation programmes. Jonah travels to his overnight accommodation in NY in a taxi fuelled by chicken shit, paying his heavily armed driver with steak brought over from Blighty. Several violent encounters later and Jonah is back on the plane, trying to smuggle some stowaways aboard. Shortly after take off news comes through that Israel has launched nuclear missiles in retaliation against a PLO terrorist attack. The situation rapidly escalates and soon a global nuclear war is wiping every major city off the map while Jonah desperately seeks somewhere safe to land… It’s a rollicking read with a powerful environmental and anti-war message. It is also a macho work of seventies male wish fulfilment with all the downsides that entails. Nevertheless, it remains an exhilarating ride through the environmental and nuclear anxieties of 1970s Britain.

Bookstagram! You know you want it. I was scheduled to read some PDK next but my dad jumped the line because he wanted me to read one of these stories and I figured I’d read the whole book. Fairly easy read. Larry Niven is very into having the science be believable to him and the stories are hit and miss. Hits: “Passerby” and “Inconstant Moon.” Misses include the middle of the book with two essays (are they stories?) where Niven gets very into being a scientific killjoy about time travel and teleportation. Getting science into his stories is clearly what makes him happy and works well enough in some stories but that’s definitely not what fires me up. The imagination of the story premises is more important to me. The page i included was included because by total chance I read that story on 4/4/2024. Would have been better if I’d powered through the rest of the book and posted it that day but I didn’t. I’m sure you are all as dismayed by that as I am. One day I read a description of “competent man” science fiction to my dad and he liked it quite a lot. That’s not my thing at all. There’s asslodes of it here. (Or is it assloads?) this is probably the last Niven I’ll ever read. I like the cover art. I think it’s for Inconstant Moon. Wikipedia says that story was made into an outer limits episode.
