Saw this in a group I'm in and felt SEEN. Quick one on tools of the trade. You do NOT need lots of (or indeed any) fancy "special" equipment to practice your Craft. My crowded altar and burgeoning cupboards might indicate otherwise, but I'm part-Magpie, love thrifting / charity shops, have access to lots of pretties via local metaphysical witchy shops like @thepurplespell (and very generous and thoughtful friends), and have been at this since my teens so of course mine is a bit "extra". And that's fine! But. If I don't have a "special" tool, I'll absolutely use the "mundane" equivalent and consecrate it for purpose. Which might include using a mop to fly with rather than a broomstick - they're very nearly doing the same job, and a Witch is practical wherever possible! Sometimes prep work means getting creative with your moon water recepticals, ESPECIALLY when you can't find 3 of @thepurplespell's 6 large moon water bottles AND you've two workshops that are going to need supplies of it ahead of the next full moon. It's a good job I find it very hard to resist keeping pretty bottles 🌝. In this photo you can see the large shop bottles, the Ostara / Fertility oil blend we're concocting, the herbs for candle dressing, my own personal moon water supplies and a random selection of my Witchy book collection that desperately needs sorting into topics. When I eventually get around to that, I'll need to do an updated #Shelfie. PS - I took up @the.tipsy.witch because I have dyspraxia, so get easily distracted / brain overwhelmed / fall over / crash into things / slur my words or can't find the word or phrase I'm looking for. This is a compendium of several different books, first gathered like this and published by HarperCollins Publishers Ltd in 1997 for Colour Library Direct. I've had Vampires and Witches separately but time saw them vanish, so I was delighted to find this in a charity bookshop today! If you've visited @thepurplespell this weekend you'll have spotted the new 'feel free to touch' display altar. If not, here are a few photos for you! We recognise that some people won't have seen a witches altar before and whilst this display altar isn't a wholly accurate representation of a typical sacred space, it gives you a good idea. We've got several tools that you might find on a working ritual area here, along with others that would likely be on a nearby shelf or in a handy cupboard. You'll spot spell kits, Florida water, ritual spell oils, incense used for cleansing, blessing, and as offerings, a chalice, numerous crystals, a bell (brilliant for sound cleansing and for changing the vibrations and energy of a space), a planchette (this particular one is part of a kit called the Tabula Mortem spirit board - not something to "play" with lightly but a fascinating tool for divination and spirit work), a book with a bookmark, spell kits, candles in various wax materials, sizes, shapes and colours (including a Raven, pillar candles, skull candles, dinner candles, intention and/or cord cutting candles), herbs, a carving pen/wand, tea strainer, mini decorated broom/besom, a pendulum, spell reagents and last but not least, a large cast iron cauldron perfect for burning petitions, holding small candle spells and using resin based incense. Phew, that's quite a list!! NB - whilst we actively encourage you to pick up, explore and ask questions about this display, please don't ever touch anything on a witches altar unless they have given you advanced permission! It's a very personal space. If they trust you enough to let you see and be present with it, by all means look and ask questions but don't reach out and physically explore, however tempting it might be, without an invite. A close up shot of the new section in @thepurplespell for you, especially the solid beeswax candles made locally. We know that they might *look* a bit scary, but skull shaped candles are brilliant for sympathetic magic - they're good for representing you or someone you want to work with or effect (with their permission of course!), making them really useful tools in healing and protection work. They can also be used in ancestral and deity work. Additionally, did you know that in colour magic and correspondences, black is typically used for protection and to deflect negativity? The oak and copper 'pen' (which can be used as a wand too) at the bottom is also made by a local artisan crafter, especially for the shop. It's perfect for carving letters and sigils into wax. Learn the basics of Pendulum work in this relaxed and (hopefully!) fun chat and workshop. Suitable for curious beginners, we'll give you an overview of readily accessible divination tools, including pendulums, followed a practical session on atunning to your own pendulum and the basics of how to formulate a question, along with other possibilities for using your pendulum such as working with charts. Bring your own pendulum along if you already have one, or you can buy the one that you feel drawn to on the night. Although experienced practitioners are very welcome, we are aiming this one at new users! This is one of those books that, if you're using oils or incense in your practice, I think you can't be without - unless you know exactly what you're looking for and fancy an internet dive, but honestly, having everything to hand is my preference! Another book that I'd recommend grabbing if you're just dipping your toe in, or would really like to focus on some gentle, nourishing and magical self care, is 'The Witch's Book of Self-Care' by Arin Murphy-Hiscock. From oil blends to cheesy herb rolls, beauty lotions and potions alongside spells and meditations, I think this is a really lovely hug in a book. If you're feeling a bit drained, and want to incorporate magic into daily self care practises, this is perfect. Immensely practical and sensible alongside being very accessible. It's also another one that you can find for less than £10 online! Let's talk BOOKS, specifically Witchcraft books that I'd recommend as sensible starting points. This 80s-tastic photo is from the cover sleeve of Good Magic by Marina Medici, specifically the hard back edition. This little gem is a brilliant primer (though it's not perfect - I certainly don't think it's necessary to take a ritual shower before every spell or wear natural fabrics when performing magic, though I will take extra steps if I feel a spell needs something a little 'more'). It covers a lot of ground, is mostly not 'fluff', and is an entire standalone system. If you're after a good, reasonably priced, starter book or indeed just want to see what else might appeal to you, you can't go far wrong with this wee beaut. I was so pleased to spot this! Did you know that many of the full moon names we tend to use have Native American roots? Whilst their names are beautiful, many don't necessarily quite fit with the seasonal cycles in nature here in the UK (and I'm hugely thankful to Gemma at @tarnandmoon for mentioning this, as it piqued my curiosity - go give her a follow for amazing tea blends and soul deep wisdom). There are many Old English names, and (generically) Celtic names that have fallen out of use, and when I spotted this Full Moon 2023 list from Driftwood Designs (Wales) - on Insta at @drifteddesigns / FB at @lizziespikesdriftwood - I was so delighted to find some of them there! I'm not a moon name expert by any means, but it's something I want to deepen my knowledge on and this is a wonderful visual help. Learn the basics of Pendulum work in this relaxed and (hopefully!) fun chat and workshop. Suitable for curious beginners, we'll give you an overview of readily accessible divination tools, including pendulums, followed a practical session on atunning to your own pendulum and the basics of how to formulate a question, along with other possibilities for using your pendulum such as working with charts. Bring your own pendulum along if you already have one, or you can buy the one that you feel drawn to on the night. Pendulum boards will be provided as part of your ticket price. Although experienced practitioners are very welcome, we are aiming this one at new users! Please note that the venue is a gorgeous, quirky space up some steep and narrow stairs, so this event is unfortunately not suitable for those with mobility issues.
