Feierten die Germanen Samhain? Halloween, das populäre Fest der Geister und Gespenster, geht, wie wir wissen, auf das alte iro-keltische Toten- und Neujahrsfest Samhain zurück. Im Rahmen von Recherchen zu neopaganen Religionen fand ich im Internet eine Seite, auf der behauptet wurde, dass auch die Germanen Samhain gefeiert hätten. Die Germanen feierten Samhain? Diese Behauptung machte mich stutzig, denn wenn die Germanen Samhain feierten, warum gibt es keinen nordischen Begriff dafür? Es ist eher unwahrscheinlich, dass sie den iro-keltischen Namen kannten und verwendeten. So nahm ich die Fachliteratur zur Hand und fand die Antwort: Germanen feierten kein Samhain. Das Fest, das die Germanen im selben Zeitraum feierten und gewisse, eingeschränkte Parallelen zu Samhain aufweist, war das Álfablót. An diesem Fest wurde den Elfen geopfert, denen auch eine Beziehung zu den Ahnen nachgesagt wurde. Daher wird vermutet, dass im Rahmen der Zeremonien, die von der Frau des Hauses organisiert wurden, auch der Vorfahren gedacht und geopfert wurde. Vielmehr ist uns von diesem Fest nicht bekannt. Auch wissen wir nicht, wie die Zeremonien im Detail abliefen oder wann das Fest genau abgehalten wurde. Wissenschaftler vermuten, dass es irgendwann zwischen dem Ende der Erntezeit und Winteranfang stattfand. Das Álfablót war, wie uns der Skalde Sigvatr Þórðarson berichtet, ein äußerst familiäres Fest, bei dem entgegen der sonst üblichen Gastlichkeit keine Fremden geduldet wurden. Dies erklärt, warum wir über den Ablauf der Zeremonien nichts wissen und wahrscheinlich unterschieden sie sich auch von Familie zu Familie. Nun wissen wir, die Germanen feierten kein Samhain. Was lernen wir daraus? Fylgja (literalmente: la que sigue) era, de acuerdo a la mitología nórdica, una criatura sobrenatural que acompañaba a una persona. It seems that Thors hammer, Mjølner, has been imagined as a throwing weapon with a ring and a string, since this is the shape in which it appears on the rune stones. According to myths, the hammer had a short shaft. Saxo Grammaticus says that the hammer broke in a battle in which the gods participated, but Snorre tells another fuller myth that explains why the hammer is so short. Loki, cut off Sif's golden hair. Sif was Thor's wife, and Thor would have killed Loki if he had not made his crime good again by finding two cunning blacksmiths among the dwarves, who made new hair for her of pure gold. At the same time, the other two forged treasures to the gods, a ship to Frey and a spear, Gungner, to Odin. Then Loki found two other dwarves and arranged a competition and bet his head that they could not surpass this amazing craft. They set about forging a golden wrong for Frey and the big gold ring, Draupner, for Odin, although Loki tried to hinder them in their work by taking the shape of a fly and stabbing them while working in the forge. The third treasure they made was Thor's hammer, which would strike all that it was thrown at, and return to the one who had thrown it. But because Loki stuck one of the blacksmiths on the eyelid while using the bellows, the hammer got a short shaft. Despite this, the gods declared that the hammer was the best of all the treasures because it was their defense against their enemies, the giants. Thus, Loki lost his bet. The dwarves were now to cut off his head, but when Loki said that he had not wet his neck and that they should not touch it, they sewed instead his lips together. Most of the objects mentioned in this story: the spear, the ship, the boar, the ring and the hammer, were all symbols of the gods and existed in the form of amulets in the Viking Age. This is probably the explanation for Snorri's remark that Thor's hammer could be so small that he could have it under his shirt and that Frej's ship could be kept in a purse. sifs golden hair was probably, just like in the Bronze Age, symbol of the goddess and perhaps it was associated with a visible metaphor, namely the ripe grain.
