On our way to the island Langeland to Forn Sidr Denmark Althyng we drove past the historical Valdemar Slot (castle) which was under restoration. Still an impressive place! The castle was previously the main seat of the Thorseng (Thor’s meadow) / Taasinge estate. Valdemars Slot on the island of Tåsinge near Svendborg was built by King Christian IV in the years from 1639 to 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian. A nearby older castle from the Middle Ages, Kærstrup, was demolished and incorporated into the new construction. In 1677, the naval hero Niels Juel acquired Tåsinge and the castle with the income from the victory in the Battle of Køge Bay. He restored the castle, which is still owned by the Juel family. With Hodur, I am fascinated and frustrated: just like Heimdall and Tyr and other gods that we have lost information on— we have very little on him outside the context of his role in Baldur’s death. Disappointing, because I love his domains and the general idea of him painted by the Eddas. I definitely think he’d jam with the goth scene so.. this art! Lecture: “Warriors: Roman legionaries, Germanic warlords, and shieldmaidens” at MoMu raised more questions than answers. Speaker Xenia Pauli Jensen, archaeologist and senior researcher PhD, promised we would leave more confused than when we arrived. Yet, Xenia also supported several new theories. Xenia Pauli Jensen is an expert in cults and warfare in the early Iron Age, challenging not just my school knowledge but also the foundation of my generation’s learning, and those before us, which no longer fit. With textual sources and archaeology, we’ve progressed in reflections rather than providing definitive answers to a time we know very little about. Xenia mentioned that the migration of the Cimbri might not have occurred, at least not due to survival, as a significant population movement was already proven at that time. Xenia also mentioned a grave with beads and jewelry thought to be of a medieval woman. It turns out it was a male grave, belonging to a 20-30 year old. The grave doesn’t reveal attire, but Xenia pointed out that gender identity might not be linked to the grave, rather how jewelry, especially from abroad, symbolized wealth and power. Foredragsholder Xenia Pauli Jensen, arkæolog og senior forsker PhD, lovede vi ville gå derfra mere forvirret end da vi kom. Men samtidig underbyggede Xenia flere nye teorier. Xenia Pauli Jensen er ekspert i kult og krig i ældre jernalder, så lynhurtigt blev min skoleviden ikke blot sat på prøve, men fundamentet for min generations indlæring, og generationer før den, passer jo slet ikke mere. Med skriftkilder og arkæologi er vi kommet meget langt til at opsætte reflektioner, end at give et definitivt svar, på en tid vi egentlig ved yderst lidt om. Xenia nævnte at Kimbrernes folkeudvandring måske slet ikke fandt sted, ihvertfald ikke grundet den teori, at det var pga overlevelse, da på det tidspunkt også er bevist en stor folkeindvandring. Xenia nævnte også at en grav med perler og smykker var tænkt som en middelalderene kvinde. Det viser så, at det var en mandegrav, for en 20-30 årig. Graven viser ikke mere om påklædning, men Xenia påpegede, at gender identitet nok ikke har med graven at gøre, men hvordan smykker, især udefra, var set som rigdom og magt. A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L Jensen 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2/5 🌶️🌶️ I had the pleasure of meeting Danielle at Apollycon less than 2 weeks ago and was able to fangirl at her about how much I was enjoying this book. I was hooked from the first paragraph - literally. I stopped 30 seconds into reading to notate that it was an A+ opening and already had "good for her" vibes. Our main characters, Freya and Bjorn, have 🔥 chemistry and banter from the get-go that doesn't slow down. They are each powerful and badass on their own and make a formidable team when they reluctantly start working together. We get a satisfying variety of romantasy tropes (forced proximity, ~frenemies to lovers, only one horse, we *have* to sleep/huddle together for warmth, foreboding prophecy, iniquitous gods, damning secrets) paired with less common Norse Mythology. 👌🏼 Why this book lost a star for me - I'll try to be as vague as possible, but STOP here if you don't want to read any potentially spoiler-ish info. In short, I saw the twists coming from a mile away and felt like the characters were being kind of dumb or willfully ignorant about the ~big reveals~. The major twist came at the very last second to act as a cliffhanger - which works when it's unexpected - but I was waiting and waiting for the twisty secret reveal and was like OMG DUH FINALLY, which wasn't very satisfying. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, Danielle's writing, and I'm excited to read the rest of the series as it comes out. 💙 Message me if you've read this and want to discuss!!
