At Pentecost, Christians commemorate a special event. The Bible states that on Pentecost, the disciples were gathered in a house in Jerusalem. ✝️ Jesus had been crucified, died, resurrected, and ascended to heaven. The miracle of Pentecost occurs when the disciples speak all languages and thus proclaim the Christian message to everyone.🗣️ In addition to its Christian religious significance, Pentecost has historically been associated with other special traditions. 🦄 For example, Whitsun used to mark the transition between winter and summer. 🌦️ New summer clothes, called the “Whitsun cut,” marked the arrival of summer. People went on Whitsun picnics. 👒 For Copenhageners, this meant a trip to Dyrehaven, where they could enjoy their picnic baskets. 🧺 It became a tradition to either get up early or stay up all night to see the sun dance at Whitsun. 🍻 Animists view the 18th as the markings of Eric’s day, and celebrations of Ing-ve, also known as Freyr. As Whitsun marks the summer, I personally do not mark this date to Freyr. Moreover, the word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek “pentekoste,” which means 50. Pentecost always falls exactly 50 days after Easter… 🐣 I also wonder why 18th May, and not when the sun goes down on 18th, making it in accordance to the old calendar, which this year would fall on Whitsun, hence Sunday. However, if it follows the date Eric’s day is celebrated on different days each year, whereas Sól always dances on Whitsun 💃 🕺 It is not a time to do blót but I do make an offering to Sunna. I’m grateful for her warm rays today. And a thought will be sent to all the Nordic gods and goddesses, including Freyr! 🌞 Being back in England, it’s regrettably, not a bank holiday weekend for me, but I wish you all a fab pinse weekend. The photo is taken today of Sól dancing above London. Hail Sól 🙌🏻 Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024

Pinse (Pentecost) is known as the Feast of the Holy Spirit, and a Christian holiday celebrated in Denmark. It falls 50 days after Easter Sunday and marks the end of the Easter period. Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ disciples, as described in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. In Denmark, Pentecost is traditionally a time for church ceremonies, including services that highlight the significance of the Holy Spirit and its role in Christianity. Pentecost includes two public holidays: Pentecost Sunday and Whit Monday. These days are official holidays in Denmark, during which many businesses and public institutions are closed. Most Danes use the holiday as an opportunity to take short vacations or enjoy nature, especially since it often falls in the spring months when the weather is milder. There are also various folk traditions associated with Pentecost. One of them is the Pinsesolen danser “the Pentecost sun dancing,”. According to old superstition, the sun dances in the sky on Pentecost morning. Many Danes stay up all night drinking, or wake up early to witness this phenomenon, although it is often viewed as a symbolic act rather than an actual observation. 17/05/2024: Today is Norway’s Independence Day, also known as Constitution Day or “syttende mai” (Seventeenth of May), which is celebrated each year. This day commemorates the signing of the Norwegian Constitution in 1814 at Eidsvoll, which declared Norway an independent kingdom following the end of the union with Denmark. Norway entered into a union with Sweden shortly after, however, the day remains a symbol of national pride and independence. Many Norwegians wear traditional clothing known as “bunad.” These garments are often specific to particular regions and are richly decorated and historically significant. The Norwegian flag is prominently displayed everywhere, from homes to public buildings. Streets and buildings are often decorated with flowers and ribbons in the national colors of red, white, and blue. It is a day of national pride, similar to America’s 4th of July (my American friend’s comparison). Wishing all Norwegians a wonderful Constitution Day. I missed out on the main events at the Bank Holiday weekend at Bork Vikinghabour, as I attended the Forn Sidr Althyng. However, as I had a few days left in Denmark, I decided to visit Bork Viking habour, which has been recommended due to the activities taking place. Check their events calendar! I was content with it being less busy. Of course it would have been fun seeing the battles, buying at the market stalls, and participated in the blót by their guþi /gyðja, (see photo of the leaflets), but I enjoyed being able to explore the site with less visitors. It is a smaller area than I anticipated, but there were everything a Viking village would have had. The tourist shop was just the usual stuff but I enjoyed the cake and coffee at the cafe (no decaf unfortunately). On our way to the island Langeland to Forn Sidr Denmark Althyng we drove past the historical Valdemar Slot (castle) which was under restoration. Still an impressive place! The castle was previously the main seat of the Thorseng (Thor’s meadow) / Taasinge estate. Valdemars Slot on the island of Tåsinge near Svendborg was built by King Christian IV in the years from 1639 to 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian. A nearby older castle from the Middle Ages, Kærstrup, was demolished and incorporated into the new construction. In 1677, the naval hero Niels Juel acquired Tåsinge and the castle with the income from the victory in the Battle of Køge Bay. He restored the castle, which is still owned by the Juel family. The castle is not open to the public but areas can still be rented - so perhaps the next heathen gathering 😍😂 Source: https://valdemarsslot.dk Photo: ©️ Anita Odin Spiritual Counselor Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024 Instagram: anitaodin73 Twitter: @aodin73 Facebook: @aodin73 #AOdin73 #anitaodin #SpiritualCounselor #wolfcross #luteranskprotestant #oldgodsandnew #årogfred #ársokfríðar #vikingekultur #vikingculture #hailthegodsandgodesses #norsegods #nordiskeguder #vikingage #vikingetiden #nordicvikings #nordicculture #asetro #asatru #fornsidr #fornsiðr #norsemen #nordboer #nordicgods #nordiskmytologi #nordicmythology #valdemarsslot Please note 🚩🐦‍⬛: I differentiate between heathens who follow the Nordic Gods and Goddesses, and heathens and pagans who follow other old gods, i.e Celtic gods. Lecture: “Warriors: Roman legionaries, Germanic warlords, and shieldmaidens” at MoMu raised more questions than answers. Speaker Xenia Pauli Jensen, archaeologist and senior researcher PhD, promised we would leave more confused than when we arrived. Yet, Xenia also supported several new theories. Xenia Pauli Jensen is an expert in cults and warfare in the early Iron Age, challenging not just my school knowledge but also the foundation of my generation’s learning, and those before us, which no longer fit. With textual sources and archaeology, we’ve progressed in reflections rather than providing definitive answers to a time we know very little about. Xenia mentioned that the migration of the Cimbri might not have occurred, at least not due to survival, as a significant population movement was already proven at that time. Xenia also mentioned a grave with beads and jewelry thought to be of a medieval woman. It turns out it was a male grave, belonging to a 20-30 year old. The grave doesn’t reveal attire, but Xenia pointed out that gender identity might not be linked to the grave, rather how jewelry, especially from abroad, symbolized wealth and power. Immaculate items, symbols of splendor. In respect of Xenia’s expertise, I hope these excerpts from the lecture will spark interest in delving deeper into history and following Xenia’s publications. A big thank you to Xenia Pauli Jensen and MoMu. Men samtidig underbyggede Xenia flere nye teorier.

Life After Death… as always debatable in ‘Viking groups’… …where Alfather equals the Almighty. …where fighting and dining in Valhalla is equalled sitting by God in heaven. You should not be in doubt of the difference if you are a follower of the old gods! It is quite sad as it’s often the same people writing such nonsense as the ones claiming to reject their Christian background. These statements implement a Christian ideology, and in my view a misguided belief of the Nordic Faith. The Alfather is the creator with his brother’s Vile and Ve. He allows Freyja, a Vanir, to select first between the fallen warriors, and her hall sounds more like Nirvana to me going to her hall than Valhalla. The Danish national hymn mentions Freyja’s hall. It appears that the Danes had more sacred places in honour of Týr than Odin. When people state the Nordic mythology and the Gods and Goddesses are metaphorical then I wonder if they believe in the Nordic Gods at all. These days Beltane has taken over social media, and whilst respecting this Celtic pagan tradition, I do not celebrate as a follower of the Nordic gods. The heathen tradition is to celebrate year and peace carrying a beech branch through town and to your home. This tradition is still seen as part of MayDay Labour Day, in particular in Denmark when the pole is made of beech to their banners to evoke ancient powers. In Sweden they use the chosen MayDay Queen with loads of flowers and MayDay poles of birch. This is still an annual event. May Day is associated with fertility as the growth of the season. Freyr and Freyja were the main deities to honour by offering mead and eggs. May Day is for offerings and celebrations but not blót sacrifice. The photo is the beech tree at my sacred place with a natural slab stone at its roots I use for offerings. It does seem like an academic page turner if you are so inclined. And if you’re in doubt of the front page, it is the Tollund bog man. I am very grateful for the recommendation and if you have a book or story to share with us all, reach out to me. Please note that I do not encourage or condone human or animal sacrifices. Likewise, I urge you to exercise extreme caution for any sacrifices where blood may occur. Sacrifices today can easily be done without such traditional methods. I posted this in a group I’m a member. The theme was about folklore from own culture. It got declined. I wonder why 🧜‍♀️🤣 “Danish Legends (danske sagn), Volume II, Page 146” “13* The mermaid could rise up and sing in the water, look so beautiful and have large breasts. Rasmus Nielsen et al., Vinkel.” Danish legends, Bind II, S. 148: “16* One day, a fisherman walking by the fjord saw some mermaids. They had laid their sealskin on the brink and were sunbathing on the land. As soon as they saw him, they grabbed their skins and swam out, but one of them was not as fast as the others, so the fisherman took her skin. Now she had to follow him home and become his wife, and they had four children together. But one day, when the fisherman was not home, the children found the old skin by a heap, and they showed it to their mother. As soon as she saw it, she ran down to the fjord, but there she met her husband. She asked him to be kind to their children, and then she put on the skin, and before the man could realize it, she was far out in the water.” And then… it became ‘Den Lille Havfrue’ -the little mermaid by H.C. Andersen at some point. Until Hollywood also destroyed that legend. Folklore, legends and oral tradition were important to keep our legacy and history alive. The stories needs to be told even today. These folklores collected by Evan’s Tang Christensen in an amazing book with beautiful pictures, I can warmly recommend if you read Danish. Share your brief folklore and legends in the comments below as I’d like to read these. Sharing is caring around the virtual camp fire🔥 Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024

I should have been to my friend’s Sigrblót this evening but sometimes things don’t go as planned. I sort of predicted I might not make it, so did I preempt this? Are we ever really in control? The Norns in Nordic mythology are depicted as weaving the fabric of fate, the wyrd. So are the small things in life spun by the Norns just like the discourse of life is? Some interpret the Norns as symbolic representations of destiny, while others see them as divine beings with the power to shape events. There is a complex interplay of our Wyrd and that of our choice. While the Norns are weaving the threads of destiny, could we then blame other people and events for interfering with our path? Or are we solely responsible for the consequences of our decisions? Final day of celebrating Sigrblót. At my sacred place in Denmark, nearly half a dozen trees had fallen in the winter storms. Some of these trees were about 80 years old. The winds they carried would have experienced the aftermath of World War II and the Cold War. The leaves they unfolded to just wither each season so would the rise and fall of Eastern and Western blocs, and as the leaves dropped so would the Berlin Wall. As the woods grew and rebuilt itself, so would the European Union. And as some branches were broken over the years so would also many lives have been. The legacy of the tree is the history of the world. As we celebrate victory, we celebrate the life circle in Midgardr. The Sigrblót is an ancient Norse ritual celebrated at the start of summer, dedicated to success and triumph. While its exact date is debated, it’s typically observed around April 14th Julian calendar, Sommarmál, which fell on 20th April our timeframe. The timing of the Sigrblót has led to varying interpretations, with some associating it with the Spring Equinox, aligning with the rebirth and growth observed in nature during this time, while others connect it to Walpurgis Night, a traditional European festival celebrated on April 30th. Not much is known about the ritual, but it lasts for three days, starting on the third full moon after the Midwinter Blot. This means for heathens who follows the Nordic Mythology it started at 1.48 hours Scandinavian time on 24/04/2024, and lasts for three days. It symbolises new beginnings and growth, reflecting the Norse worldview of valor and conquest. While sources primarily are associated with Sweden, similar celebrations likely occurred in Denmark and Norway, influenced by local customs and interactions with neighboring cultures, not to forget the importance of oral traditions and folklore. The term Sigrblót may not be explicitly mentioned in the Eddas by name. However, references to rituals dedicated to Odin and celebrations of victory and success can be found throughout both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. In the Poetic Edda, specific poems like the “Hávamál” and the “Völuspá” contain verses that allude to an overall understanding of Odin’s importance in Norse mythology and his association with victory and triumph. Similarly, in the Prose Edda, various sections such as the “Gylfaginning” and the “Skáldskaparmál” provide insights into Norse cosmology, mythology, and rituals. While the Sigrblót may not be explicitly named, descriptions of Odin’s actions, interactions with other gods, and mentions of seasonal rituals can offer indirect references to celebrations dedicated to success and victory. St George’s Day in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Saint George is a legendary figure who is venerated as a Christian martyr. He is believed to have lived during the 3rd century AD in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina and served as a soldier in the Roman army. According to legend, he was martyred for his Christian faith by Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century. He is best known for the tale of Saint George and the Dragon, where he slays a dragon to rescue a princess. George is widely revered as a symbol of bravery, chivalry, and Christian faith. St. George became associated with England during the Middle Ages, primarily due to the spread of his cult following the Crusades. His reputation for bravery and chivalry resonated with the English, who adopted him as their patron saint. Over time, his feast day, April 23rd, became an important day of celebration in England, known as St. George’s Day. The Faroe Islands, situated in the North Atlantic, were likely initially settled by Irish monks seeking solitude in the 6th or 7th century. Norsemen arrived later, around 825, and established allegiance to Norway, then Denmark after 1380. Despite limited arable land, the islands are known for rich bird and marine life. Notable figures include Grímur Kamban, considered the first settler, and Sigmundur Brestisson, who introduced Christianity in 999. Archaeological evidence indicates settlement as early as 500 CE. Viking farmsteads like Kvivik and Toftanes, as well as ancient structures like the turf-roofed house and ruins of Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur, showcase the islands’ ancient history. “A large archaeological excavation at Toftanes in Leirvík in 1982–1987 revealed an ancient Nordic settlement. Several houses were excavated, as well as a number of archaeological items, providing significant insight into the oldest part of Faroese history. The excavation proved that the village was inhabited in the Viking age and indicated that Leirvík may be one of the oldest villages in the Faroes.” Photo and citations: ©️ https://visiteysturland.fo/product/toftanes/?lang=en Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024 Instagram: anitaodin73 Twitter: @aodin73 Facebook: @aodin73 #AOdin73 #anitaodin #SpiritualCounselor #wolfcross #luteranskprotestant #oldgodsandnew #årogfred #ársokfríðar #vikingekultur #vikingculture #hailthegodsandgodesses #norsegods #nordiskeguder #vikingage #vikingetiden #nordicvikings #nordicculture #asetro #asatru #fornsidr #fornsiðr #norsemen #nordboer #nordicgods #nordiskmytologi #nordicmythology #færøerne #faroeislands #faroeseviking Please note 🚩🐦‍⬛: I differentiate between heathens who follow the Nordic Gods and Goddesses, and heathens and pagans who follow other old gods, i.e Celtic gods. Beowulf is a famous Old English epic poem that exists in only one copy, housed in the Nowell Codex at the British Library. Historians believe it was created between 975 and 1025. An intriguing theory suggests there were originally two copies of Beowulf during the reign of Cnut, with an interest in linking the epic figure to Cnut’s ancestors. In Norse mythology, wolves hold significant roles and symbolism. Fenrir, son of Loki, is a monstrous wolf destined to kill Odin in Ragnarok. Skoll and Hati chase the sun and moon, heralding the end of the world. Geri and Freki are Odin’s ravenous wolf companions, representing war’s primal nature. Garmr guards the underworld and will join the final battle against the gods. Wolves embody strength, cunning, and the chaotic forces of nature in Norse lore. This post is in honour of Karen Pollitt’s grandfather, Hr. Robert Nielsen. He emigrated to USA from Denmark, and taught Karen her skills in woodwork. Karen herself is a keen contributor to this fb page with her interesting comments of her own heathen journey. Thank you, Karen, for sharing! Karen herself has managed to finish a 5 meter long Kin Ship, and a 3 meter long Idle Warship. One noticeable difference is that a Kin Ship does not have tall ends. Across the middle the Kin Ship is as wide as a Buick. So one may say Karen honours both her Danish and American roots in this fabulous boat. It is made from uncountable wood pieces patiently worked to fit and slotted in to build these boats. All the short pieces Karen cut on her bandsaw. The Kin Ship has 417 basswood (European: linden wood) pieces in its construction. At the ends it has two mahogany pieces underneath. Karen designed the sculptures to accommodate the short pieces. Karen explains that she wanted the Kin Ship to look a cross between a “boat and a backbone with ribs”, as boats were the “backbone of Norse culture”. It is also the metaphysical vehicle that carries us on after death. It was made to honour her grandfather. She said that if you look at the Kin Ship’s ‘nose’ the ribs cut out the empty spaces, which makes it very solid. Karen also mentioned that Idle Warship steerboad has a rat head, after the Danish sea captain sayings: “So long as a rat remains onboard, the ship is worth saving”. The Idle Warship was built to honour her grandfather, Hr. Nielsen, who was a master in building furniture. He even made a miniature of the Børsen Spire, which recently burned in Denmark. Regrettably as most immigrants experience, Hr. Nielsen was unable to find work that suited his skills, so he became a carpenter. Continues in comments below ⬇️ Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024

Sommarmál changed from the Julian calendar date 14th with the Gregorian calendar date to 20th April. It marks the beginning of summer. Back then there were only two seasons, Summer and Winter. Now April is seen as a Spring month. However, as the climate changes we may need to consider two seasons again. It is a religious day with offerings of food and drink where your own belly must be filled until hunger and thirst is no more. It is a day full of fertility rituals to seed the plants. The Sommermål goes back to our ancestors who arrived in Scandinavia during the Bronze Age, which may explain why big rocks with holes for offerings are noted as part of rituals. Animist Rune Rasmussen writes about the ‘elf querns’ (älvkvarnar) and ‘elf hallows’ (älvgruvor) as Sommarmål rituals documented from Sweden. Elves are not only mentioned in Nordic Mythology but very much part of Swedish folklore so this makes sense. It is a day for offerings, not sacrifice and thus, blót is not performed. Blóts are performed on full moon, and the next one is Segerblót that lasts from 24-26th April. Offerings however are important so do not forget it’s Valborg’s Eve on 30th. The photo is from my sacred place in Denmark. My Gefendi txt me to say that ‘bøgen er sprunget ud’. A Danish saying that when the beech tree sprouts, it’s a sign that spring has truly arrived. Offerings versus Sacrifices in the simple terms An offering is provided to your chosen god or goddess as a thank you A sacrifice is a ritual in a religious sense often used as an atonement or to pray for prosperity. Animals and humans have both been used as a sacrifice to worship gods. Today we mainly worship our gods by offerings, such as a meal. If it doesn’t hurt you emotionally to depart of your offering it certainly is not a sacrifice. Be mindful of offering blood as this have a stronger magic you may invoke unwanted results from. The means and meaning are therefore similar but in practice not quite the same. Sacrifice an offer. Offer a sacrifice. The photo is a sword from the Iron Age when weapon and jewelry and other gifts to the gods were sacrificed in the bogs. Compare that to today when people drizzle a bit of mead as to savour the rest of the bottle themselves. Swords sacrificed often were from defeated enemies as who’d want a sword that couldn’t keep you alive, or give you victory. Post a photo in comments that tells a story of your city: I have chosen ‘Grisebrønden’. The Pig Fountain, officially named “Ceres Fountain,” is located in front of Århus City Hall and depicts a sow with 7 piglets. Mogens Bøggild spent several months in a pigsty studying the animals and their movements, which led to the featuring of a unique clock mechanism making pigs urinate and the sow drool. It took nine years to complete as it was halted for 1.5 years during the war. The unveiling of the sculpture took place on July 7, 1950. Originally made of granite, it was later replaced with a bronze copy due to vandalism. Hence, the photo of a bronze statue. The monument was based on the story of the prodigal son who had spent all his money and now had to eat with the pigs. However, for me the sculpture symbolizes the city’s history and the significance of pigs in Denmark. I wish to dispel the misconceptions about pigs 🐖 Pigs are clean animals and were historically vital for households and diets. The domestic pig descends from the wild boar, which was domesticated (made tame) around 9,000 years ago in Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. Domestic pigs arrived in Denmark around 5-6,000 years ago. A normal pig can live up to 20 years! Today, regrettably pigs are typically slaughtered at 6 months old, weighing around 110 kg, and raised in various pens until reaching slaughter weight. So the pig industry is of course ‘svineri’, which is a Danish saying using the swine terminology for something being unacceptable. Terms related to pigs include sow, gilt, polt, boar, barrow, hog, piglet, weaner, feeder, and slaughter pig. In the Iron Age and Viking Age, there was a special pig called the “sonar boar.” Sonar means atone, meaning to make something right again. And boar means a castrated male pig. The sonar boar was chosen from a litter of pigs and was cared for with great care. At the solstice, the pig was brought forth, and the men placed their hands on the pig’s back and made vows for the future. If one did not keep their word, it would go very badly for them! To put this joke that humours many on fb into a historical context. Aethelstan was crowned King of the Anglo-Saxons in 925 A.D., and scholarly consensus positions him as the first true king of England. So basically there were no kings but the Old Norse / norrønt ‘konungr’, chieftains, that later evolved to the word king / konge we know today. The term Great Heathen Army / store hedenske hær was coined in 11th Century. Guthrum” is known as “Gudrum” in Danish, who was a Danish leader part of the Great Heathen Army that invaded England in the 9th century. He was one of the prominent figures during the Danish control over a significant portion of England, known as the Danelaw Danelov. Guthrum is also known for signing a peace treaty with the Anglo-Saxon King Alfred the Great, resulting in the establishment of the famous Danelaw. It is worth remembering that only the Norse settlers and Celtic pagans were heathens as the nowadays England and surrounding islands already then had thriving Christian communities. During the Viking Age, gold was less common than silver. Both were used as currency and for ornamentation. However, gold held significant symbolic value as a sign of power and social status. New Moon on 08/04/2024 at 7.21 (BST +1), or 2021 hours mainland Europe. 🌑 It was a total solar eclipse at 1917 hours. Not visible in the UK however. The moon is in the Aries ♍️ constellation. It is an extra powerful super New Moon which gives favourable energies to make new beginnings and set out goals. Explore what you have in abundance and consider what aspects that no longer serves you. In particular financial matters may be at the fore. Remember life is a learning and it is never too late to educate and expand the path we have chosen to take. The moon energies can be used constructively 24 hours before and after the peak time. This means you may manifest any energy for your goal the next 29.5 days it will take Máni to reach the next new moon. As we move away from the New Moon phase, Màni meets Jupiter on Wednesday 10th April and it’s a good time the next coming days to look out for Earthshine when the sun goes down. At the end of this powerful week, the followers of the Nordic gods celebrate Ségrrblót on Sunday 14th April as for followers of the old calender it is Summarmál. For now, let us embrace the New Moon energies by finding a safe, calm space. Sweep the place to ensure no wights or spirits not invited enter your space. Use a candle to focus if novice. If spiritual use a circle of white light for protection, pagans use sage or mugwort, heathens use your runes and/ or mugwort for protection. Write down your reflections. Use your reflections to meditate a preferred scenario for your abundance. Please do pay heed to what may feel like positives or challenging experiences may be equally as overpowering if you do not have the strength to hold what the Universe gives you. Be mindful what you wish to manifest. Keep your paper safe to remind you of your aims. You may even keep it under the pillow during the new moon phase. Thank the Universe. Thank the Gods and Goddesses you reached out to. Thank your spirit guides. Hail Máni 🙌🏻 Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024

The Stenkvista runestone and Læborg runestones are fascinating artifacts from the Viking Age, written in the Young Futhark script. They reflect a time when Scandinavian society transitioned from Norse mythology to Christianity, evident in the blend of symbols on the stones. The Stenkvista runestone, standing 2.2 meters tall in a churchyard, features runes beneath a hammer, an unusual style for its time. In contrast, the Læborg runestone, 2.36 meters tall and located outside a village hall, has a hammer after each line. These hammers, interpreted as Thor’s hammer Mjöllnir, symbolize strength and protection. The stones highlight the beginning of a cultural and religious shifts of the era. Only few have survived of such kumlar and they are found in Sweden and Denmark. The text is inspired by a private photo in another group. On October 20, 1835, two ditch diggers found a body at Haraldskær Bog, dressed in wool and fur, with heavy poles over the chest and abdomen and fastened with draw hooks. Philologist Niels Matthias Petersen believed the woman was Queen Gunhild, widow of Viking king Erik 1. Bloodaxe. However, Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae argued she was an ordinary woman from the Iron Age. Carbon-14 dating from 2016 places her between 275 and 200 BC. She is dried out and weighs only 2 kilograms. The discussion about the origin and sacrificial practices surrounding bog bodies continues, but the woman’s background remains unknown due to her fragile state. Typically, sacrifices were burned at this time, so the archaeologists find it puzzling why the woman was placed in the bog. My question is, perhaps she fell into the bog herself? Høj Stene is one of Northern Europe’s largest burial monuments from the Iron Age. The burial monument can be experienced by the Gudenå River near Vejerslev in Favrskov municipality. The Gudenå River stretches 149 kilometers through the Jutlandic landscape through lakes to Randers Fjord and ends in the Kattegat Sea. The word “Guden” is derived from the Old Norse word “guth,” meaning “god” or “holy.” The name can be translated to “The River of the Gods.” Høj Stene is a rediscovered burial monument shaped like a ship. This is called a ‘ship setting.’ Høj Stene is mentioned in records from the 1600s. I have not been able to find evidence of the word’s original meaning, but it’s interesting that another ancient find on Avernakø is described as ‘Høje Stene’, thus in plural. Grammatically, today ‘sten’ is ‘stones’ both in singular and plural, although ‘stene’ probably refers to more stones than the verb ‘to stone.’ And ‘høj’ is not an adjective describing the high stones, but rather a mound. In the National Archives in Copenhagen, the ship setting appeared under the name “Højs Steen” in a so-called land register from 1683. Bauta stones, which are elongated inscribed stones upright, are often found on small stone mounds or where remains of cremation graves are buried. In this case, it is a burial monument. 50 years after the land register notes, a survey of the Gudenå River was also conducted. Furthermore, in 1850, a report to the National Museum stated that the ship setting is located between two smaller burial mounds and measures 88 meters from stern to bow. The reconstruction actually stands on a burial mound to the north, and a now erased burial mound to the south, where there is only a slightly hollowed evidence that there used to be a mound. Høj Stene is therefore one of the largest ship settings ever found in Scandinavia, and probably the largest in Denmark. Unfortunately, over time, some of the burial monument’s stones were removed and reused for other buildings. It is well known that even runestones have been used to build churches. Photos in the rain from my Easter holidays. The first pic is from Viking Age Hedeby, Schleswig, now under Germany. There’s a museum also but apart from a sentence in Danish at the exhibition it was all written in German, and nothing in English which I am puzzled about given it is a very popular place for visitors who has an interest in the Viking Age trading town which used to be part of Denmark. The Viking reenactment in the back was very touristic, and expensive. All in all I’m glad I’ve seen it but I enjoyed more the walk and museum at Dannevirke. This museum uses a red flag with two ravens. A symbol Huginn and Muninn. I was informed that the new museum’s director wants to change it to something less ‘aggressive’. I was really impressed to see Fyrkat. A former Viking ring castle or fortress in Denmark, dating from c. 980 AD. It has finally been recognised by UNESCO after many years attempts. The wooden sculpture was carved by reenacters similar to how it would have been done in the Viking Age at the nearby living museum. I highly recommend visiting. There are five ring castles in Denmark all by the same amazing ‘sun wheel’ design. The Fyrkat Fortress was built in 980 under King Harald Bluetooth. None of the original ring forts exist today, but at Fyrkat, an earthwork marks where the ring fort surrounded the original 16 longhouses. The last photo is from Høj Stene, Favrskov, Denmark. It is a stone sepulchral monument built in the Iron Age. The ship setting was reconstructed by Moesgaard museum as the original stones had been reused for other purposes throughout time. It is the largest found in Denmark of such type, and one of the largest in the Nordic countries as these are mainly found in Denmark and Sweden. Keep an eye out for more photos and more information about these and other places I visited on my holidays. Have a nice day.

Altså i flertal. #Aros #Aarhus #Århus #smiletsby #cityofthesmile 🇩🇰 A city on the Danish peninsula, Jutland. The second biggest town in Denmark and in constant development. It used to be the world’s smallest big city. It had no East until recently as this area was actually in the Kattegat sea. In Aarhus preserved under a bank is a small museum that documents a small part of Aros, previously known name for Aarhus. Viking Age Aros. The Aros mask marks the door, as we view it as protector of the city and a symbol, kind of city mark, for Aarhus. I personally feel it has been appropriated seeing it sold touristically worldwide. Please do not support such vendors. As you descend about 3 meters below the current surface on this exact location near Aarhus Cathedral is where the vikings lived and worked. The town was already then perfectly situated between the river, Aarhus Å and the sea, Kattegat. Even today it’s one of the largest container ports in Denmark, well, even in the Nordic countries. In the Viking Age ships were anchored with commodities from the town and hind lands. King Gorm built a rampart (vold) fortified by Harald Bluetooth, which shows the significance of the city. Entering the museum you are now standing where once upon a time in the Viking age were pit houses (grube huse). Pit houses were dug into the ground and mainly used for handcraft. There is recreation of a pit house to demonstrate the floor was below ground level. The small museum also displays finds from the houses. One of these is a sceleton, which was left behind in one of the collapsed pit houses. The male was not buried and may be an unresolved murder from the Viking Age. You can read more on the photos in English and Danish. The museum itself has sounds and stories coming from speakers as you make your way around. A hidden gem well worth a visit. Easter marks both the Jewish holiday, Pesach, which commemorates the Jews’ escape from Egypt, and the most important Christian holiday, celebrating Jesus’ death and resurrection. Its date varies annually and is determined by the equinox and full moon. The Christian Easter is set for the Sunday after the first spring full moon according to the decision of the Nicene Church in 325 AD. However, the Jewish Passover, Pesach, is calculated based on the new moon. Denmark switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1700 to improve date precision. Easter Sunday is a holy day (bank holiday). Family gathers for Easter lunch, which is traditionally ‘nine kinds of cabbage on Maundy Thursday’. Lent ends today, Easter Sunday, so it is a tradition to eat eggs, in particular on the Saturday ‘skidne eggs’ were a part of a big Easter lunch. Whilst eggs continue to be the main serving for Easter lunch, and served with several other dishes similar to julefrokost (Xmas lunch), including pickled herring, some families do serve the more biblical lamb. Lamb is not a traditional Danish dish. Read more here, and source for above citation: https://www.kb.dk/en/inspiration/easter/easter-lunch Photo: unknown #nohornsonhelmets in the Viking Age. #Skidenlørdag For my dísir blót I offered eggs. Offerings of eggs is a longstanding heathen and pagan tradition transferred to the Christian Easter celebrations. A tradition in Denmark since at least medieval times on the Saturday after Good Friday (Langfredag) a dish called Skidne æg (Dirty eggs) is served. Hence, it’s called skiden lørdag (Dirty Saturday). This Spring tradition honours the hens that starts to lay eggs again. You could not clean the house/kitchen the previous two days as these were (and still are) significant holy days (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday) whe you could not do any housework, which caused the homes to become dirty (skident) on the Saturday. Cleaning was ok this day is not regarded as a holy day (Bank Holiday). Skident is also slang for shite and shitty, and shit. So, not an appealing name to a dish. It is usually served to the traditional Easter lunch for family. Skidne æg is boiled, peeled smiling eggs in halves served in a mustard sauce. This is the traditional recipe if you are brave: The eggs are boiled for 6-7 minutes in water (depending on how runny they should be) - add the eggs to the water only when it boils. Drain the water from the eggs, peel them, and then cut them in half. They should be runny, where the yolk is not completely firm.Melt butter in a saucepan and add the flour. Stir in the saucepan while adding milk, mustard, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper. Toast rye bread for the runny eggs and mustard sauce. Pour some sauce on a plate, place the egg halves on top, and serve with rye bread on the side. Chop chives and sprinkle them over the eggs when serving. For serving at Easter lunch, you can pour the sauce into a dish, place the egg halves on top, and sprinkle chives or watercress on top. Serve with rye bread.

Hekse i dag udfører hvid magi. The raven banner is regrettably often equated as a ‘Viking banner’ and followers of the Nordic Gods. It goes back to the Danish King Ragnarr Loðbrók, and still used officially by Danes in some respects. “The Raven Banner was the banner of Ragnar Lodbrog’s sons but also other Danish Kings such as Cnut the Great had it as their banner. The legend goes that the banner was made by Ragnar’s 3 daughters in one day.“ Citation: Anette Guldager Boye, historian and author. The banner was used where the Danes ruled. I have respect for groups using their own version of this banner to avoid appropriating such historical banner. In the photo, it is the banner of Forn Sidr, Denmark. Nordic Aminism also have their own version of the Raven banner. Humans have never been so estranged from nature as they are today. Yet, we look for messages from the gods there when simply the nature signs to us as fellow beings. The trees have their song just like the birds. They seek company and attention just like humans and appreciate us talking with them. Talk to trees, flowers and plants. Thank them when they give you something. Praise their efforts to look pretty in the summer and for their strength during winter. Talk to animals and insects you meet on your way appreciating their contributions to the ecosystem. Freyja is not following you around when near cats. Your human being is not significant enough for her to single you out. Oðinn is not spying on you through his two ravens. You are not going into battle why would he waste his ravens time. Humans today yearn for signs from the gods and turn ordinary animals on an ordinary day into godly creatures. To feel special and powerful. This is misconstrued thinking from the Eddas. Embrace nature as you embrace humans. Your neighbours are definitely not the gods in disguise. Treat others as advised in the Hávamál. The ravens at Tower of London have historical significance. Huginn and Muninn they certainly are not. Full Moon 🌕 on 25/02/2024 at 7am (GMT +1), or 0800 hours mainland Europe. The moon is in the Libra ♎️ constellation. The strong full moon eclipse happens six days after Spring Equinox. It is usually the time to shed layers of energies that no longer serves us and welcome the new. The fertility of the lands as leaves turn green and flowers welcome us on our paths. It is time for a dísir blót as it is vårfruens dag when we celebrate Freyja, and Frey, if you follow the Nordic gods. The moon energies can be used constructively 24 hours before and after the peak time. This means you may release any energy back to the Universe that no longer serves you. Máni will take about 29.5 nights to reach the next full moon. Find a safe, calm space. Sweep the place to ensure no wights or spirits not invited enter your space. Use a candle to focus if novice. If spiritual use a circle of white light for protection, pagans use sage or mugwort, heathens use your runes and/ or mugwort for protection. Write down your reflections. Use your reflections to meditate on what you would like to let go of to manifest a preferred scenario. Please do pay heed to what may feel like a challenge or negative experience may be teaching you a lesson and still has a purpose so be mindful what you let go off. Burn your paper (if safe) or burry it (if environmental friendly) to do so. Thank the Universe. Thank the Gods and Goddesses you reached out to. Thank your spirit guides. Jesus kom ridende på et æsel, og folk tog palmegrene og gik ham i møde for at hylde ham som en konge. Dagen fejres på selve søndag. Det er ikke anerkendt dom officiel helligdag. Nice to see a pig enjoying a freer lifestyle. I wouldn’t call it freedom but animal welfare is important to me. See the nice video here (photo©️): https://www.facebook.com/share/r/qe9hwi19kJVcPAHc/?mibextid=UalRPS I have written before the importance of the pig for followers of the Nordic mythology. Where other religions say the pig is a dirty animal and not to be eaten, I vouch for the pig as a clever pig that indeed is very clean. Domestic pigs descend from the wild boar, and they appeared in Denmark around 4000 BCE. Danes have reared and eaten pigs since then and ‘stegt flæsk med persille sovs’ (a type of crispy fried pork belly with parsley sauce) is still voted the national dish. As I have written before extremists often appropriate the rune symbols and misuse the Nordic Mythology to describe a religious pathway only for the Teutonic Germanic race. Firstly, the word Viking can regrettably be used in any way people see fit. Whilst I personally view this as appropriation, it is not culturally seen as such as ‘Vikings’ have become a generic word given it was not only used for the indigenous Nordic people. Having said that evidence suggest to me that the Vikings were seafarer from nowadays Scandinavia, however, people joining them were also seen as Vikings. This would still refer to a so-called community based on Nordic origins but this group taking in other people as part of their cultural background. It is quite disturbing to see how people talks about inclusiveness whilst they use DNA test to ‘prove Viking’ origins. No dna test makes anyone Viking. It may make your lineage share dna with Scandinavians. The Vikings were curious people and travelled far. Whilst they sought land and riches soon became part of medieval greed, the politics and religion made the notorious battles known in history. The most well known battles are indeed between now England and Denmark. Today, the mix of financial greed, religion and politics is a dangerous combination in any respect. We can see that in the world issues today. Vulnerable people are easy targets for radicalism. People who may not understand better are often easily manipulated. The inclusiveness the extremist groups provides gives a sense of belonging. In the UK, the government has several initiatives to battle this issue. One of these are PREVENT. Okay, so this morning I read a comment stating the ‘Viking diet’. 😳 Apparently, this diet is about eating twice a day and leftovers and porridge with berries and local European produce. Importantly is the dear deer as seen in my photo. I’m sure the chips were Danish potato produce😌 I mean that means I’ve been on a Viking diet all my life. They do say once on a diet, always on a diet 😝 I do also sometimes eat more than twice a day. Does that then change from a ‘Viking diet’ to a ‘Scandinavian diet’? 🤪 And where does that leave all the veggie eaters who don’t eat meat? 😏 New fad? Old fad? No fad! Just another appropriation of the ‘Viking’ word. 🤬 If you are interesting to know about diets, listen or read to Giles Yeo ‘Gene Eating’. Still the best dietary book I’ve listened to 🥣 If you want to know about Viking Age food, I can recommend ’An Early Meal’. I’ve not cooked any recipe but it got pretty photos and a lot of interesting text about the ‘culinary odyssey’ Serra and Tunberg describe in good taste 👅 Eat well. Stay well. Have a fab Freyja’s Day. “Norrønt” and “Old Norse” are often used interchangeably to refer to the language spoken by the Norse people during the Viking Age (approximately 8th to 11th centuries). It was a North Germanic language spoken in Scandinavia and in Norse settlements in the British Isles, Iceland, Greenland, and other regions. “Norse” can refer more broadly to the people, culture, and history associated with the Norse-speaking societies of Scandinavia and their descendants. It encompasses not only the language but also the mythology, literature, art, and societal structures of these peoples. So, while “Norrønt” and “Old Norse” specifically refer to the language, “Norse” has a wider scope. Whilst Old Norse prior to the Viking Age is only known in the form of the Elder Futhark and presumptions based on the Yonger Futhark, the language spoken is not known. The language however during the Viking Age, norrønt, is more evidently how it would have been spoken. The language has similarities to Icelandic language today, but it is not the same languages. Even Icelandic pronunciation and meaning of words have evolved since the Viking Age. Icelandic Futhark derived from the Younger Futhark and remained in use until 1700. The Icelandic Futhark is however less known. The photo is taken from ‘Runes the Icelandic book of fuþark’ printed by the Icelandic Magic Compaby. I am still to read the book, so at this stage I can’t comment on its usefulness. If you have read the book, feel free to leave your review in the comments. Árs ok fríðar 🫶🏻 Anita 2024

In Norse mythology, two swans drink from the sacred Well of Urd in the realm of Asgard, home of the gods. According to the Prose Edda, the water of this well is so pure and holy that all things that touch it turn white, including this original pair of swans and all others descended from them. Swans are sacred birds and the swan feathers provide protection. Many people associate swan feathers with shaman and pagans but Nordic mythology and folklore are full of tales about the significance of the swan feather. For followers of the Nordic gods we do not need sage nor mugwort as used in pagan and other heathen practices. Yet, mugwort is better to use because it’s causing less harm if breathed in by a pregnant woman. Mugwort is also natural to nature in Europe. There is no right ways but there are wrong ways. In the Flateyjarbok, we learn that Freyja rides on her boar Hildisvíni, who is in fact her protégée, Óttar in disguise. They meet Hyndla who is a seeress. Freyja succeeds in forcing Hyndla to tell Óttar about his ancestors. In Danish wild boar is vildsvin. The females are called so (sow), which is the nickname to someone that spills food as equivalent to the nickname’din gris’, meaning ‘you are a pig’. The Carlsberg Foundation has erected a statue of a sow and her piglets in front of the town hall in Aarhus. The symbol of fertility, which is very much Freyja. Denmark is a farming country and pigs and cows main animals. The pig is very clean and clever in contrary to many beliefs. People want cats and dogs but me I just want a small pink piglet. So cute with the curly tail that’s too often is cut off on industrial animals. Photo©️ Art by Sif created Hildisvíni. Just saw a comment that says we cannot follow a path that has not been ‘experienced’ for a 1000 years. My question is what does this person mean it has not been experienced for the past 1000 years? We may not know exactly how rites were carried out, but like everything there’s evolution. We got archeological, historical, geographical, oral and written sources. The Nordic countries never fully dismissed the old ways and traditions. American books are not so great sources and neo-paganism nothing to do with the old ways. It’s important we don’t confuse matters. Worshipping the old gods today is the same as Christianity that for most such paths have changed over the centuries such as CoE, Catholism, Lutheran Protestant. No religion is as it was. This does not mean we cannot honour God, Gods, Goddesess. The Nordic Gods and Goddeses were never forgotten and never left Midgardr. I don’t know much about the Celtic pagan gods but u doubt they were ever forgotten and never left either. In frith. This may be seen as ‘me’ time in contemporary terms. Listen to your intuition and try to understand what makes you feel better. How can you work towards getting more quality time in a hectic environment going forth. A simple way if you are not intuned to your spiritual side is to pay attention to your dreams.
