The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff This series is a wild ride. It’s a fresh and fun format that can be intimidating to start with but it’s worth it to stick with it. (Physical or audio, both are excellent, though the audio doesn’t do as good of a job at censoring the language) A young adult sci-fi with plenty of action, this story is full of twists and turns. There is a lot of heartbreak, what with a planet invasion, a damaged AI, and a mutating plague. And that’s just book one. The main characters are young adult and they behave according but there is still some good character growth and any bad decisions are overshadowed by everything else going on. There are a few romantic side plots through out and they are a fun addition to this fast paced, action packed story. And reading it with a friend makes it twice as fun! On pourrait penser que ça va être du réchauffer mais pas du tout. Ça s’imbrique parfaitement et le plot twist final m’a coupé le souffle. 🚀L’ambiance a un rythme très soutenu et on rentre très rapidement dans l’action qui ne nous lâche pas jusqu’à la fin. 🚀Les protagonistes principaux y sont d’ailleurs aussi pour quelque chose. 🚀3 personnages… 3 caractères totalement distincts. 🌟 Gemina and Obsidio 🌟 by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff…these are the next two books that I read and are the final two books in the illuminae files series! Similar with the review on the first book these both absolutely gripped and stunned me! Each follows a different hero and heroine (unlikely as some of them may be) that have their lives turned upside down. Each character must grapple with their own demons while working through active and continuing grief while coming to terms with outside forces literally trying to destroy the very world! I loved everything about this series, it was masterfully done in a format that I have never seen before and haven’t seen since. This is not your normal novel, it is told in files depicting the events of these worlds as they happen through email, interviews, surveillance footage, illegal IMs, comms, AI thoughts and more! I have never been into sci-fi but I felt like this was a great book to jump into the category…it was not too science heavy where I felt I couldn’t follow what was going on. 𝐐𝐎𝐓𝐃: 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢-𝐅𝐢? • Sci-fi is a genre I usually stay clear of since I’m not a sci-fi fan at all (unless you count the tv series Red Dwarf because I love that 🤣), but I have read Illuminae and I loved it! ❤️ • The experience reading this book is very unique and hard to explain so I guess you’ll all have to pick up a copy and get reading! 😂😂 • This book made me reconsider delving into sci-fi and although I’m still reluctant to do so, my mind is opening up to the idea. • I also wanted to add that I am an incredibly slow reader (thank you dyslexia 🙌🏻🙈) but I managed to read this in a day… that’s how addictive it is!! ❤️
~ obsidio review ~ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ hello my beautiful bookstagrammers, how are you all today? i hope everyone is doing well 😌 obsidio was just as amazing and incredible as the first two!! i loved it so much, and i am fully invested in amie and jay’s writing now, i’m definitely going to be looking into their other books 🤪 i was panicking the entire time i was reading this, i just kept thinking that people were going to die it was PAINFUL. but all in all, i absolutely loved it, so let’s get into the details 😼 first of all, i loved that it included ALL the characters in this one, it was perfect 🤩 but also terrifying because i didn’t want any of them to die 😭 kady and ezra were cute as always, nik and hanna were entertaining as always, rhys and asha were…interesting but they worked out in the end, and ella was an icon (as always). i love all these characters so much and they have reserved a special place in my heart forever. two moments in this book towards the end were what made it so excruciating, i won’t name them but iykyk 😭 i loved the ending with all my heart it had me smiling like an idiot 😭 reading the series in itself was such an incredible experience and i would trade my last remaining limb to read them all again if i had the chance. the world building is absolutely phenomenal and the characters are so well developed. i ADORED these books and i could not recommend them more 🙏🙏🙏 that’s all from me my loves, happy reading 😽💞💞 (also, WHO’S EXCITED FOR FOUND HEAVEN TOMORROW???? 🌟 Illuminae the illuminae files_01 🌟 by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff…this book is a part of one of the best books series I’ve ever read! This is a completed trilogy and follows the survivors of planets that are attacked…BUT I’m not really into Sci-Fi and this absolutely hooked me and I could not rest until I finished each book! It’s not a normal novel, it is comprised of surveillance logs, IMs, emails, diary entries, AI (Aidan) reports, memos, and other things as well! Each book tells the story of a different unlikely hero and heroine that all comes together in the end to stick it to Beitech Industries, the monster in the night! This first book follows Ezra and Kady and I cannot stress to you enough how amazing this book was and how once you start it you need to MAKE SURE you have all of the books available to read right away! I read the first and didn’t have the second or third on hand and had to wait so long for Amazon to deliver them because no stores in my area had them…and reading them on your kindle (while doable) is not really the best experience because of the formatting and way this is put together in memos and IM chars and emails, etc. I did try to read it on my kindle while I wasted but it was just to small and you couldn’t really zoom in! Illuminae by @amiekaufmanauthor and @misterkristoff First book in a YA science fiction trilogy, told almost exclusively through text conversations, transcripts of security camera footage, and monologues from an AI character. The format of the book made it an easy read (especially, I imagine, for teen readers who tend to prioritize dialogue over conversation). The main characters themselves were likable, if a bit cringey at times. Sometimes this cringiness came from the authors not quite hitting the mark on how teenagers talk to each other (in my experience). But the majority of the time, they did sound like actual teenagers; the problem is simply that teenagers just happen to be really cringey when talking to one another. Especially when talking to their significant others. Luckily, I was intrigued enough about the plot to forgive my gripes with the text conversations, and I think if I were still within the correct target demographic, I would have enjoyed the book even more. Pomalu jsem si ji dávkovala, ať ten zážitek z ní nemám hned za sebou. Vše bylo vymyšlené do posledního detailu, každá stránka má svůj význam. A to i třeba taková strana, na které je jen jedno slovo. Zpracování je jednoduše✨chef kiss✨! Před přečtením jsem si říkala, jak moc mi půjde se vžít do děje a do postav, když vlastně nečteme souvislý text, ale “jen” přepisy kamer, chaty, různé záznamy. Absolutně zbytečně jsem se bála. To napětí, které kniha dokázala vyvolat… snad nikdy víc mi při čtení nebušilo srdce. Příběh je celkově skvělý, výborně vystavěný. K postavám si dokážete udělat vztah i přesto, že jste s nimi jen pár stránek. Několikrát se mi zlomilo srdce, párkrát zase slepilo a závěr byl strhující. Vážně jsem nevěděla, co od toho čekat a předčilo to moje očekávání. Moc se těším na další díly! A i když je to řazeno jako young adult, tak věřím, že to bude bavit i starší čtenáře. Are there any books on your backlist that you’re trying to read this year? I’ve heard a lot of good things about the illuminae files but the format these books are written in always intimidated me. But after reading the aurora cycle a few years ago (and really liking my first foray into sci-fi) I decided to finally give these a try since they are by the same authors. I got the audiobook and I’m so glad I did! This book is told in a series of interviews, video transcripts, emails, etc.. and listening to it with a full cast for the different voices made it so fun! If you saw my stories last week, you know I had mixed thoughts about the direction the story went. I almost couldn’t finish it because the descriptions of the de@ths were so 🤮 I had several people message me about this book being slow-burn horror or compared it to the walking de@d in space—which are both valid comparisons imo. This story is not for the faint of heart. BUT- I did finish it and I did enjoy it. The ending of this book was bonkers and there were so many plot twists it made my head spin but it ended in a way that made me want to keep reading. Many of you messaged me saying the next book was your favorite and since I already bought it using a 2for1 deal, I’m going to continue on. We’ll see if the descriptions in book 2 settle down. What's a book you keep putting off? I've had Illuminae for two years (a hand-me-down from my sister), but I finally picked it up on March 1st and could not put it down! The layout is so unique, the entire narration told through audio and video transcripts, IMs, emails, journal entries, memos, redacted reports, etc. The story was great, although it went to some places I wasn't expecting. ***SPOILERS*** I was enjoying the ride, obsessed with the format, becoming attached to Kady and Ezra, when the tense deep space chase suddenly morphed into a space zombie horror featuring a self-actualizating and psychotic AI. It became every horror sci-fi movie I stop watching (because I'm a horror and gore wuss), but I couldn't stop reading this. Sometimes I wonder why I read certain authors that literally make me weep with heartbreak. 😅 I swear we’re all a little bit masochistic lol! This story is brilliant, and such a unique format, both the audiobook and the physical book. This is a book I would highly recommend having both formats to really absorb & appreciate the story. Told like less like a standard story & more like a recounting through transcripts, emails, interviews & medical reports, it’s brilliant chaos that will have you immersed in it until the very last words. I’m normally not a big audiobook reader, however I do enjoy full cast production type audiobooks, which Illuminae was, & it was masterful. Incredibly emotive, thought provoking, & heart wrenching. This Space Opera is a must read. Just be prepared to guard your heart. 😅 Amie & Jay have woven an amazing Sci-Fi tale that deserves all the hype.
