🌿 ⒶⓇⒸ ⓇⒺⓋⒾⒺⓌ 🌿 • I had mix feelings regarding this one…🤔🤔 At first I enjoyed it and I find the plot interesting to follow, the mystery kept me interested until the end but there’s a few things that didn’t let me fully enjoy it. This story is told in multiple POVs including the real culprit which I think is a great touch to the story. However, the changes between one POV to another POV in a chapter and sometimes happens in the same paragraph confused me. This might happen because mine is not the final format of the book….😕😕 Zach and Addie's characters are well developed and I really like watching their relationship grow during the time of Sam's trials. Not just Sam, they also went through a lot of stuff and I keep rooting for them the whole time and the epilogue at the end really warms my heart. One thing I missed was not seeing more of Sam’s trials in court, instead the focus was slightly shifted to Addie’s investigation to a cold case that was never solved for three decades. Overall, for a debut novel it was pretty good and I feel satisfied with the ending. It covers a lot of interesting topics that’s still related in our reality right now and I think it was quite well written. What's one book you've been super obsessed with? Said book for me is The Sins On Their Bones by Laura R. Samotin. The cover is gorgeous, and I've read this story twice in a little over a month! 😂 Thank you @laurarsamotin and @booksandverse for hosting an awesome giveaway! ❤️ The gist of the story is that two ex-husbands are on the opposite side of a civil war in the country of Novo-Svitsevo. A dashing and daring spymaster has also been caught up in the fray. I absolutely adored the writing! The three POVs, Dimitri, Alexey, and Vasily, are so distinct, and there's a phenomenal balance between political intrigue, romance, and self-healing within this tale. Seriously, please pick up this debut! The second slide contains a GIANTMicrobes plushie that I think represents this book well. It's back pain. A lot of the characters are dealing with their own hardships, yet they must learn to heal and endure. Similarly, backbones are pretty darn hardy, but back pain is no joke. #partner @prhaudio VICTIM | Three-Word Review: No.He.Didn’t. Ok, ya’ll got me with this one. It was a very solid, satirical debut, and I enjoyed the way it was written, but this story had me heated. Javier’s father was a hustler and drug dealer who was murdered. So, from a young age, Javier was taught how to play things to his advantage. He soon sees that playing the victim is the ultimate hustle. It turns out that his traumatic background is just what college admission committees are looking for, and he is another step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a writer. But, he doesn’t really want to become a writer. He just wants to skip doing what it will take to get there and go straight to accolades and notoriety. Let the lies and fabrication commence! I was inextricably propelled to keep reading solely to see if (by chance) Javier would find a way to change his ways and stop intentionally hurting the people in his life… but nope, it didn’t happen. Needless to say, I strongly disliked Javier, but I guess that’s the point of the story, right?! He was delusional to keep doubling and tripling down on his lies in order to promote his own agenda. He just continued to wrong those he cared about and take advantage of them in order to advance himself. All I have to say is, karma is a you know what. All in all, this was a very engrossing read. Javier’s thinking was WILD! We definitely did not create him… delusional until the very end. This story definitely opens the conversation about trauma being consumable and profitable. However, something really dark lurks beneath the perfect, shiny surface… This novel was BRILLIANT! I’m very excited to report another 5 STAR book to y’all 😍 This was truly PEAK literary horror, and it was queer too!! What more could one really ask for? I can’t believe this was a debut novel; the writing style, the plot and the characters were all perfectly crafted, so much I initially thought this was the product of an experienced writer. It goes without saying that Ling Ling Huang has now entered my list of auto-buy authors. I loved how lyrical the writing style was, and how sensory as well. I’m a sucker for multisensorial descriptions, and this book was full of them - the textures, scents, sounds and tastes were so vividly depicted, it definitely made for a layered reading experience. This novel was also unexpectedly emotional, especially the parts about the protagonist’s childhood as a piano prodigy and her relationship with her parents. By page 50 I had already had tears in my eyes several times. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a literary, lyrically written novel with dark themes. I finished this book this morning during a break at work and am absolutely obsessed. The Resort by Sarah Ochs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow!!!! I didn’t see that ending coming and my jaw is on the floor and I still haven’t recovered. When I first started The Resort, it took me a minute to get into, but I was fully hooked after a few chapters. The alternating chapters between Cass and Brooke kept me on the edge of my seat. No one is reliable. Just when you think you can trust someone, don’t. Their secrets might just kill you. Even the narrators are unreliable. The setting is another reason that I was so pulled into The Resort. With it being the first warm days in Annapolis, I found myself dreaming of a tropical paradise. I could feel the sand beneath my feet and see the beautiful horizon above the ocean, but I could also feel the fear and sense the danger. Now let me talk about the twists and that ending. The clues are subtle for most of the story, but things start to piece together as we get closer to the reveal. I guessed pieces of the truth, but was shocked when the full truth was revealed. And even then, just when I thought that was the end, we get the epilogue. Every time there’s an epilogue in a thriller, I am SCARED! Because that means they lived happily ever after or there’s another twist that is going to destroy us. Sarah Ochs did just that and now I need a sequel! If you're looking for a fun, heartwarming, feel-good read, The Prospects might be for you! Gene is the first openly trans man in pro baseball. He’s an outstanding infielder and playing shortstop until Luis shows up, when he gets shifted over to 2B. Luis, who ghosted him after college and won’t give him the time of day... They’re bad-news-bears on the field and no better off of it, so they decide to practice extra together, and slowly crack through each other’s defenses. Gene and Luis’ relationship is beautiful, from the early hesitant moments, to the way they slowly let each other in, to the support they show one another and the trials they face. The side characters add depth, love, and some comic relief. It was so nice to see so much acceptance and teammates genuinely caring for each other whether gay, straight, trans, bi, whatever. Of course in real life, the world would probably be a lot uglier than what's shown in The Prospects, especially for Gene, but it was nice to pretend and hope that humanity could be kind and accepting. ✨The Husbands✨ Spent the day reading this yesterday and have been loving it! After a night out, Lauren comes home to her husband. Only one problem, Lauren doesn’t have a husband. As she tries to figure out how she’s been married to someone she doesn’t know, Michael goes up into the attic and comes down a different husband. Lauren soon realizes her attic is magical and creates an infinite number of husbands to her liking, and dislike. Eventually, she starts to question what it means to settle down and what it means to start living. I’m about 3/4 of the way through and it’s looking to be a 4 star at the most. Unless there’s a beautiful, heartwarming lesson we learn at the end of this, it most likely won’t be a 5 star. As a debut, this has fantastic writing but is starting to drag just a tad 🤏 I’ll update my rating as soon as I’ve finished! PIGLET | Two Word Review: Very Polarizing Piglet has a nickname she can’t shake, but she likes how her life has turned out. She has it all and wants for nothing until her fiance, Kit, reveals an impropriety weeks before their wedding. At this point, Piglet becomes ravenous in terms of being about to get everything she has been working towards, everything she deserves. First and foremost, Kit should be ashamed of himself. He is an absolutely terrible person! This impropriety is a small thing to him, and Piglet is just supposed to overlook it!? Run girl run!! She is rattled and upset by his betrayal but keeps moving forward. This leads to her spiraling as her wedding gets closer and closer. This story was well-crafted, and I felt like a fly on the wall. The most interesting thing in this book was the croquembouche Piglet was making for her wedding. This croquembouche became its own character. It served as a metaphor for her behavior and, really, her entire life leading up to the wedding. She worked so hard to appear put together. The cracks are starting to show, and the red flags are just piling up, too much for one person to carry. I just longed for Pig to choose herself… shut out all the noise, listen to her intuition, and not settle. At one point Wes Craven was going to do it, Dustin Hoffman got interested, but this "New York nightmare" of a story was finally filmed in French, set in Rome. Lovers of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next novels could appreciate “Just Stab Me Now,” this debut fantasy meta novel by swordplay YouTuber Jill Bearup. Awhile back, she released a series of shorts in which an author argues with the heroine of her fantasy novel she’s writing. These shorts enchanted Bearup’s audience, and they asked to see this in print, and she obliged. In print, JSMN loses much of its fast-paced humor, leaving a sweet, slow-burn romance that expands the story and adds a parallel romance for the author. I only hope there’s isn’t a sequel. 👁️book review🕷️ Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra is a newly released thriller novel about a mother trying to protect her children from harm during a home invasion. This book stressed me out so much! I think home invasions are one of the most terrifying things that could actually happen to anyone - probably BECAUSE they could happen to anyone. The thought freaks me out so much - so yeah, I was pretty much at the edge of my seat for the entirety of this novel. Which, by the way, I read in ONE DAY. And 350 pages in one day is a lot even for me (with audiobook help, but still). I was that invested. This novel explores themes that are personally very important to me, like how very often women’s accounts of v**lence are dismissed because «she’s crazy/exaggerating/making it look worse than it actually was/only wants attention/is hysterical». Gaslighting is definitely one of the main themes of this book, and it was so so frustrating to read - but very important too, I think. Just be mindful of that when picking this thriller up! I read this book because it’s @literallydeadclub ‘s pick for April, and I’m very happy to have read it! I don’t often read this type of thriller novels, but this book definitely made me crave more. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a real page turner with darker themes 🖤 As for the picture… this was my first time adding an element from a different picture to a photo of mine with Canva, and yeah I know it looks sloppy. But it took me more than an hour to understand how to add that hand, so I decided to include it, sloppy or not. At least now I kinda know how it works. More or less. 🍰Delightfully Sweet 🍰 This was the perfect read after reading two books about someone dying. 😊 Jenny Quinn is in her 70s, spent her life taking care of her family, and realizes she’s never really done anything fun for herself. She secretly decides to take a chance and enter a TV baking contest series. What a delight to watch Jenny gain confidence, be completely “selfish”, and have some fun. As a woman who took a break in my career to raise my children, and then start grad school at 40, I can completely relate!! I’m also a Gordon Ramsay fanatic, so I loved the cooking contest aspect too! This book is a lovely testament to believing in yourself and taking a chance in life, no matter your age. This is a debut so I’ll be back for her next one. Highly recommend! ❤️
Slowly getting through my 12 recs from 12 friends, here’s my most recent one! Remarkably Bright Creatures follows Tova, a cleaner at her local aquarium who is starting to decide how she wants to spend her final years. After she saves him from an accident while exploring outside his tank, Marcellus, the resident Giant Pacific Octopus feels for Tova and wishes to find a way to help her feel less alone. This was a very sweet read. I really enjoyed reading about Tova (and although he was a bit of a man child Cameron as well). Marcellus really was the standout character - octopuses are indeed incredibly clever, and his chapters reminded me of news stories I’ve read about real life octopus escape artists. It’s funny thinking about what might be going through their heads (or arms for that matter) so his POVs were quite fun. I did figure out the shape of the plot quite early on so some parts felt a bit longer than they needed to be but I still enjoyed following the characters on their journeys as they transitioned to new phases of their lives. If you enjoy a slower paced heartfelt story, this book may be for you! Thanks so much to @readwith_adele for recommending this one! Anyone else out there working through their 12 recs list? 🌑✨ thoughts about monstrilio by gerado samano cordova ✨🌑 hey, hello, how are you booksta lovelies? i am good, happy because i am about to board my flight to south africa 🇿🇦. but tbh it’s been a tiring week so i’m up but down. i read monstrilio a little while ago and i absolutely loved it. so while this review is a bit late i was always going to do a full review at some point. and that point is now!!! —- monstrilio by gerado samano cordova is a weird, disturbing, and totally unforgettable book. it meditates on grief and what that does to those who are left with the absence of someone they loved. cordova’s novel is well paced as he used four different points of view to tell the story, closing the story with the titular character, monstrilio (better known as m). i went into the novel expecting a horror story about a monster but as i went through it i found it to be more of a uniquely complex family story with elements of magical realism. that isn’t to say that there weren’t gory moments, but rather that they weren’t the reason i kept reading. what kept me reading (aside from the beautiful prose) was always m. i found myself so attached to him by the end that he still sometimes enters my mind. aside from m cordova skilfully draws up a group of compelling and not always likeable characters and i am still in awe of this work. i don’t think that’s the book was perfect in any way but rather i was so moved and touched by the whole thing that i had to give this book ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/★ ★ ★ ★ ★. i think of monstrilio as a frankenstein-esque coming of age novel propelled by grief. so, if you like sad, queer, weird, emotional and slightly grotesque books you should check this one out. have you read monstrilio??? what did you think? and if you haven’t, what was your last five star read? #literature #bookstagram #instabook #bookphotography #igbooks #bookstagrammer #bookaddiction #bookstagramoread #monstriliobook #debutnovels #bookreccomendations #bookstoread

BOOK REVIEW by Lou I really enjoyed this. It’s an original, entertaining, funny read, that I’d really recommend if you’re looking for some escapism. When Lauren returns to her flat after a big night out she’s astounded to be greeted by a husband she didn’t think she had! However, he seems to know her, the flat’s full of his belongings and her friends, family and social media footprint seem to all say she’s been married to him for years. Just as Lauren’s adjusting to him, he goes up into the attic and a different husband comes down! Apparently her attic is producing an inexhaustible supply of husbands, each of which she has a slightly different life with. They are a slightly dodgy bunch, but as soon as one gets annoying she can just move onto the next! It’s an intriguing idea, cleverly executed with a few unexpected twists along the way. Beneath the humour and the farce there are some interesting ideas about the impact our romantic choices have on our lives and how things could easily have worked out very differently. I think fans of the ideas in Matt Haig’s, The Midnight Library or of Dolly Alderton’s, sharp, witty writing style will enjoy this. A really fun, entertaining read, perfect for curling up with after a busy day. We’ll be adding it to our list of perfect beach reads too. 💙Not Really Blue Monday💙 What could easily be a Blue Monday for me, in Seattle, is not! For me, books have a power that can change the way I think and feel💙 I arrived home last night from traveling on and off for two weeks. I woke up to a gray day that it is now turned into a drizzly day! I have a lot of unpacking, laundry, grocery shopping, mail, sorting, and general cleaning to do. Blue Monday? No, today is for books! I just finished reading debut novel ,The Book of Doors, by Scottish author Gareth Brown. It was a unique take on the time traveling troupe. It felt fresh, adventurous, and thought provoking. I will be discussing it tonight with my in real life longtime Bookclub. I cherish our gatherings! We have met once a month for about 10 years and all of these book club members hold a special place in my heart. I am looking forward to seeing what the group thought about it. I think the book was a 4.25 ⭐️ read for me, but I might change my mind! Before I meet with my in real life book club tonight, I will be zooming with author Amy Joe Burns, who is discussing her novel Mercury. The author chat is being facilitated by Laura Beth @lbtheloverofbooks I always enjoy chats with Laura Beth! She has a lovely way about her! I really enjoyed her family fiction novel about a small town roofing family much more than I had anticipated (a 4.5 or4.75⭐️read for me) and I am really looking forward to this early evening chat! My Q1 2024 in Books, Movies and TV Shows 💖📚🎬 Books: Six books read so far this year which definitely screams a slow reader haha but wearing this like a badge of honour! ✨ Highlights have been Piglet by Lottie Hazell (an absolute favourite) and Needful Things (for being the longest book I have read in a while) Movies: Seems to have been more of a movie than a tv show quarter. A lot of thrillers and horrors, which have been pretty decent TV Shows: Never been a reality TV girlie but I have been obsessed with The Mole and Love is blind S6.
