Book review of The Sicilian Inheritance by @jopiazzaauthor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is a beautiful ode to Sicily. The fabulous plot - switching between the lives of Sara and her great grandmother Serafina alone make for a fabulous read, but in addition you have layers of history from a female perspective, medicine, mythology, a travelogue and a mouthwatering food journal to enjoy. Think tiramisu in book form. And it certainly did pick me up, I want to book a trip to Italy right now! Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers Bolinda Audio, and the author Jo Piazza, for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my personal, honest review. And of course thank you so much to the wonderful @harpercollinsuk who you may recall sent me an uncorrected proof which frankly I will treasure ❤️ #thesicilianinheritance #jopiazzaauthor #jopiazza #italiandynasty #italianhistory #booksaboutitaly #bookssetinitaly #italianfood #italianculture #booksaboutmythology #sicilianhistory #sicilianmythology #fivestarread #highlyrecommendedbook #mustreadbook #mustread2024 #netgalleyreads #netgalleyreviewer #booksaboutfriendship #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutwomen #booksaboutwitches #booksaboutwomeninhistory #booksaboutwomenshealth #booksaboutwomensrights #bookreviewer #bookreviewersofinstagram #booksmatter #readingmatters #notquiteabookshop

I slightly fell down a Julian of Norwich rabbit hole, after hearing Dr Janina Ramirez speak about her in Oxford last year, and so, when I heard about this fictional retelling of her life, I knew I wanted to read it. The story follows Margery Kempe, a woman who has 14 children and vivid visions of Christ, and Dame Julian, whose suffering and visions lead her to take up the solitary existence of an anchoress. Both women experience trials of different kinds and are accused of heresy, a dangerous thing in the 1400s. The spiritual journey of both women leads them to an encounter in 1413 that will release both of them from their suffering. I think perhaps Julian's beautiful quote, 'All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well', summarises so well the hope that both she and fellow mystic Margery Kempe had, despite the persecution both suffered. It's inspirational in that respect. Did I love it? Well... in all honesty, I didn't love this book perhaps much as I'd hoped to. I liked the structure and the first-person narrative. I thought the women were nicely bought to life, and the story was definitely believable. I just didn't care enough about either of the main characters, and actually, I really didn't like Margery Kempe that much at various points, either. There were some very nice words, though. A title that's as popular with the Bookstagram community as this one is, has a lot to live up to. Thankfully, this book didn't disappoint in any way at all. It's funny, it's smart, it's got great characters and a fabulous plot with a lovely surprise or two at the end. I adored it, and frankly, there is now a huge risk that I will become a complete bore about quite how good it is and religiously start an annual reread. If you're unfamiliar with this book, then you'll want to know that it's about four English women who go to stay in a little Italian castle. They don't know one another before they arrive, but as their friendships develop, each one falls under the glorious spell of their surroundings and discovers something new and quite profound about themselves or their lives during their stay. Quite magical, very romantic, and a delightful heart-lifting comfort read. A definite 5* read. (This was also one of my @gilioncdumas inspired #TBR24in24 pile. I'm just so pleased to have read it!) #elizabethvonarnim #theenchantedapril #penguinmodernclassics #penguinbooks #paperbackbooks #secondhandbooks #bookstagram #fivestarread #booksaboutwomenbywomen

☔️🌧️ ɮօօӄ ʀɛʋɨɛա 🌧️☔️ Eleanor Roosevelt has long been one of my favorite historical women. Unfortunately, I had very little knowledge of Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethane. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey into their lives and their friendship this book provided. Both were indomitable, courageous, passionate women. Their fight for equality and equity was hard fought and often thankless. I enjoyed the authors’ perspectives and viewpoints into each women’s individual life and how that influenced their friendship and their work together. There were details about both women I’d never considered or know revealed to me in this book. It also opened my eyes to some things historically that I didn’t know much about. My only dislikes was the pacing of the plot, as it felt a little slow and that at times it read more like non-fiction than fiction. I highly recommend this one and make sure to read the authors’ notes and acknowledgements! 4.5🌟/5🌟 QOTD: What historical figures do you like learning about? AOTD: Besides Eleanor Roosevelt, I enjoy learning about Laura Ingalls Wilder, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Abraham Lincoln #bookreview #bookloversofinstagram #historicalfiction #strongfemalecharacters #firstladies #bookreviewerofinstagram #historicalfigures #womenrolemodels #booksaboutwomenbywomen #bookstagram #bookishvibes #bookwormlife #booksbooksbooks #bookstagrammer #bookreviewer #bookishlove #bookwormsofinstagram #readerlife #bookobsessed #bookishcommunity #readersofinstagram

Bright Young Women by @jessicaknollauthor review!!! 🌟🌟🌟.5 I really, really enjoyed this story. My historical fiction/crime junkie heart was living for the plot!!! It’s a fiction based on the survivors and victims of Ted Bundy. It’s a female forward story, complete with trauma healing, toxic relationships, found family and heartbreak. I read this last weekend with @lovelylisareads !! It seems like we both came to the census that the writing style was definitely different. I don’t normally have to reread something multiple times to grasp it’s meaning to me but I found myself doing this throughout the entire story. There is multiple POVs throughout different time periods (I typically LOVE this) which made it more difficult to attach the the characters in such a short book. That being said, the story of Tina, Ruth and Ruth’s family trauma really hit me hard in the last third of the book😭 Being from the PNW, the story of Ted Bundy is local history along with many other horrendous serial killers. The author captured the lack of respect we have for the survivors and victims and how as a society, we put these criminals on a pedestal. When really, we should be listening to and praising the ones this person tried to destroy. It put me into a reflection about all of the other serial killers I have learned about and how much I know about them compared to their victims. It’s really backwards, don’t you think? The majority of mass murders/serial killers are men. And we glorify the violent outbursts and actions caused by abuse/trauma/mental health. We as a society are essentially allowing it to almost be okay instead of focusing on mental health of men…. Food for thought🤷‍♀️ okay sorry rant over guys!! I recommend this story to really anyone. It’s a shorter read with a really interesting storyline that really makes you stop and think. If you are looking to step out your comfort zone genre and try something new, this is for you!A wonderful read for Women’s History Month!!

My floorboards are back! 😁 @kathvbooks is a genius! 🤩 Kath found wallpaper online that matched my old floorboards and I just had to give it a try! I’m very impressed with its likeness, right down to the imperfections! I have definitely been missing my old floorboards, so now I feel like I really got my Bookstagram mojo back. It’s the little things in life! 🥰 📚 I am #currentlyreading The Walnut Tree by @kateclmorgan, which is the perfect read for #womenshistorymonth. It’s a really fascinating account of the law in the 19th-early 20th century and how women were treated during that period. It’s really making me feel so lucky that we have so much of our own freedom now and even though things still aren’t perfect, we have come such a long way. I will share my review when I’m finished! 📚 March also always makes me think of @thebooksatchel’s #femmemarch, which I always like to take part in every year if I can. I have been reading so many excellent books by female authors this month and thinking more about what I read this month has proved to be quite a positive experience! 📚 What are you currently reading? Are you making a conscious effort to read more books by women this month?

Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun is the story of 75 year old Morayo Da Silva. Originally from a small town in Nigeria, she has lived in various places world over due to the fact that her ex husband was an ambassador. We meet her at her current residence in San Francisco, where she is retired from her position as an English professor.   As an aging woman, Morayo is afraid of limitations that society will try to place on her. She is terrified that the RMV will not renew her license, because she is certain she will not pass the eye exam. She lives her days socializing with anyone who will chat with her, and reads and rereads her many books, which she considers her friends. (Sound familiar?)    Unexpectedly, Morayo takes a fall, breaks her hip, and ends up in a rehab which is essentially an old age home. She strives to make friends in her new environment and does so — as she is an exceedingly engaging and good looking woman. She worries daily about her apartment and her books. When she finally returns home, she is determined to not be defined by age and to keep on living her best life. She still thinks about the lovers of her past and of the many adventures she has lived, and hopes to keep making memories.    This book resonated deeply with me. I am not too far behind Morayo in age and I am not ready to be called “old.” Much of what she says and thinks are thoughts that I have also had.     This is a quick read by a fabulous Nigerian author. #likeamulebringingicecreamtothesun #nigerianwomen #sanfrancisco #aging #agingandsociety #womenandage #nigerianauthors #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #quickread #readthisbook #booksbooksbooks #framinghampubliclibrary #booksaboutwomenbywomen

No matter how different our lives may seem, it’s a wonder how the subjugation of women appears uniform across cultures. ——— This is one of the finest storytelling I have ever experienced. Four narrators in alternating timelines deliver a story so complex, so haunting about the plight of women and a culture of silence. Isra is at the centre of this story, and we first meet her in 1990. She is 17 and has just been married off to Adam, who brings her to live in Brooklyn with his family. There, she is expected to conform to traditional gender roles—bearing sons for her husband, cooking, cleaning, and raising children. The novel jumps back and forth to 2008, where we meet Isra’s 17-year-old daughter Deya, whom her grandmother, Fareeda, has declared will be married as soon as she graduates high school. What stood out the most to me is how the prose is delivered from the lips of women of different generations. As the story unfolds we experience the full breath of their lives, their fears, their shortcomings and all the ways it’s shaped their decisions and their actions. We peel back their stories and find that at the core of it all, they’re all women bogged down by the machinations of a culture that’s designed to keep them as second class. With this brutally raw yet unputdownable down, the author explores a range of weighty themes—domestic abuse, misogyny, immigrant experience and the intersection of culture and religion and how they both can be tools of oppression. I held my heart and wept for the women in this story as well as the millions of women going in through similar circumstances in reality. I don’t know that the ending made up for how harrowing this was, but I’ll leave that for you to judge. What a stunning, stunning debut. This one will stay with me forever. 🤍

What a cheerful, bubbly canter through a day in the life of a down-at-heel middle-aged spinster whose world is fortuitously (and unexpectedly) turned upside down by the fabulous Miss LaFosse and her glamorous friends. There are definite Cinderella vibes, but will Miss Pettigrew meet her handsome prince? You'll have to read it to find out! (I'm sorry this is such a brief review, but I think this book would easily be spoiled if I said much more) The lovely illustrations also deserve a mention, although I'm afraid I have no idea whether they were drawn by the author as it doesn't say. #misspettigrewlivesforaday #winifredwatson #persephonebooks #secondhandbooks #funreads #booksaboutwomenbywomen

"Everything Is Not Enough" is the sequel to "In Every Mirror She's Black. Akerstrom profiles the same women that she introduced in the first book and adds a third who we barely remember from "In Every Mirror She's Black." All four are Black women of different nationalities living in Sweden, and trying to make a life for themselves amid rampant racism and the fetishization of Swedish men.     Kemi is a Nigerian American who works as the DEI exec for a huge corporation; Brittany is an American woman who met her Swedish husband when she was working as a flight attendant; Muna is a Somali refugee who at the start of the sequel has undergone a huge tragedy; and Yasmiin is Muna's closest friend. She is also Somali and running from a horrendous past. Her Turkish husband hides many secrets, all the while she is struggling to care for Muna and make her own way based on her talents for hair and makeup.     This book did not wow me in the same way that "In Every Mirror She's Black" did, but it is, nonetheless a good read via which I learned a lot about Sweden and Swedish culture, especially in terms of how it affects Black women. The characters are interesting and all have somewhat evolved since we first met them.    #everythingisnotenough #lolaakinmadeakerstrom #sweden #blackwomeninsweden #sequel #fiction #fetishizationofblackwomen #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #readandlearn #learnaboutsweden #somalisinsweden #booksaboutwomenbywomen #readmore #bookrec #booksbooksbooks #booklove #framinghampubliclibrary

🍁🦃ᏰᎧᎧᏦ ᏒᏋᏉᎥᏋᏇ🦃🍁 Book 96 of 2023 was non-fiction book about one of the first female NYPD detectives! This book taught me some things about the NYPD and women officers that I never knew! The author told the story of Mae Foley’s career as well as what was happening socially/economically in the city at the same time. The chapters were well structured and flowed together nicely. I liked that it went chronologically through the years of Mae’s career and ended with a chapter about current developments in the NYPD and how Mae would have viewed them. I could tell that the author did her research and talked to Mae’s surviving family! I felt like I got to know this indomitable women who wanted to protect and serve her community. She was a woman ahead of her time, who carved her own path in life. Her legacy leapt off the pages of this book. I’m so glad I picked it off the shelf at the library! 5🌟/5🌟 QOTD: Do you read non-fiction? If so, what sub-genres? If not, what are you reading this week? This book is a wonderful example of #bookstagrammademedoit as I'd never even heard of Barbara Comyns until @pear.jelly started to talk about her with such enchanting enthusiasm that I became utterly powerless to resist. It turns out that Our Spoons Came from Woolworths is yet another book written by a woman about a woman. It's also another book about men and women and how they engage with one another, and about society and how it views women. It's been a bit of a theme lately and I almost wondered if I ought to read another one so soon after the last few but this one was quite different so I'm glad I did. It's a different period, a different style and the narrator has a completely different personality, which made this feel nice and fresh. Sophia, our main character narrates her own story. She speaks in a beautifully chatty style and you truly feel like she's recounting her life story to you over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. She marries young, naïve, romantic and into a life of extreme poverty. Much of the book is the sorry tale of happiness just beyond her reach and there was a real sense of our narrator just bouncing along the bottom of life, never quite staying away from the jaws of financial ruin long enough to be able to really make a success of things. There are disapproving and unsupportive relatives (the scene where they find out about the marriage is absolutely shocking), outstanding bills and grimy flats. I won't spoil any more than the blurb on the back of the book does by telling you that thankfully there is a happy ending to this tale but you really need to read the whole of the book to feel the benefit in full. Do *not* skip to the end and spoilt it for yourself. Please be warned that there are some truly awful events within the pages, including the issue that's caused by Sophia's husband not wanting children. Her first spell in a maternity hospital was nearly enough to make me weep. Ghastly. There are other teary moments, too and I crumbled once or twice. Get your tissues ready. So, Barbara Comyns. Another new-to-me writer for this year, which is great. (cont. in comments)

My second Winifred Holtby of the year and despite this being her debut novel, I think this is the better of the two. Whilst not being as complex as South Riding, the slightly simpler plot and the smaller cast of characters seemed to be more convincing and I was definitely more engaged from the start and deeply invested by the end. For those who have already enjoyed South Riding, with the wonderful Sarah, you'll be glad to hear there is another incredibly strong woman at the heart of the story. Mary is young, married, capable and passionate about her family farm and the village where she lives. There is a hint of 'Lady of the Manor ' about her, which feels rather trying but she is caring and she tries to be fair towards those who work for the estate. All is well at the start of the book; Mary is a little frustrated with her older and slightly dull husband and is growing old before her time but the farm is finally free of debt and is well respected by the locals. Then one night, after a chance encounter with a young and radical journalist the life of the farm and the village is turned upside down. There were quite a few similarities between this and South Riding, but to the detriment of neither book. It's got a bit of politics, a head-turning bit of risky romance, some interesting bits about society's expectations (Mary and John are childless, a recurring theme in the book) and some gossipy women. All in all, nicely cosy with the best autumnal cover I've seen in a while. #viragomodernclassics #winifredholtby #anderbywold #secondhandbooks #novel #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutfarming #booksaboutpolitics #bookstagram

Yes, it is my second post of the day (sorry), but I just had a few pages left of this one this morning so finished it during lunchtime. This book is a highly readable pair of transcribed lectures from the popular classicist Mary Beard. It's a nicely accessible piece of modern feminist writing, and a lovely introduction to the author. As you can probably imagine (if you've seen her on the BBC), Beard uses dry wit alongside her huge expertise of the ancient world to unpack the long history of the imbalance of power between men and women across the globe. Beard not only refers to historical examples, she also writes about women in more recent times including Margaret Thatcher, Diane Abbott and Hillary Clinton. Mary Beard has herself experienced the sharp edge of misogyny, and she openly talks about her own experience of rape as well as the online trolls who regularly attack her on the platform formerly known as Twitter. It's not an altogether comfortable read, and in some levels I feel like I have been left with as many questions as answers, but I do think it's important that we keep talking about these things so we can create a world where everyone can reach their full potential. These lectures are not brand new, but there are updates in the afterword which include references to the #metoo movement and the UK general election in 2017. I think this is a great little book and a perfect manifesto for a well-researched and passionate feminist view. I absolutely loved 'hearing' Mary Beard speak about this subject, and am now almost considering an attempt at her other books. (She is a previous DNF author for me, so this is a brave step!) #manifestomonday #marybeard #womenandpower #feministwriting #historian #damemarybeard #littlebook #booksaboutwomenbywomen

🐶Book Review🐶 Love on the Brain Ali Hazelwood ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 🌶️🌶️ A very cute rom-com from the queen of women in STEM, Ali Hazelwood, Love on the Brain was a fun and easy read. I was intrigued with the science in this book, and often laughed out loud at Bee’s quirkiness. A grumpy-sunshine romance trope, but it also had themes of discrimination against women in the workplace. This book definitely rescued me from the brink of a mega reading slump, and for this I am very grateful. I was looking for some fluff, and even though this intelligently observed commentary on the mental demise of a middle aged woman is not fluff, it. is. brilliant. Mrs Armitage, who is never referred to by her own name is a wife (four times over), a daughter, a mother (to eight children), but who is she? This loss of identity and of function as her children are either shipped off to school or outgrow their infancy overwhelms her to the point of despair and her arrogant philandering husband treats her more and more badly whilst ostensibly trying to make her feel 'better'. Some of the ideas feel hideously outdated- especially where it's suggested that Mrs Armitage simply needs to have another baby to feel better, and the behaviour of the men is astonishing. More than once I felt a soupçon of rage bubbling up as I read, but the writing is so good, I just had to keep going. Mrs Armitage is a pretty outstanding unreliable narrator- one to add to the list of characters you might not want to meet IRL, along with pretty much everyone else in this book, but for that very reason it's a very worthwhile read... I don't know if any other women readers have found the plight of Mrs Armitage to be relatable but IMHO, and despite the sixty-odd years that have passed since publication, she still lives the story of plenty of woman who have children and give themselves up, intentionally or otherwise, as a consequence. There are some triggers- please approach with care. DM for details. It's a clever short read, and apart from the last paragraph, which I thought was quite annoying, it's definitely worth a look. #thepumpkineater #penelopemortimer #booksaboutwomenbywomen #penguinbooks #vintagebooks #vintagepenguins

`Heroines‘ by Ira Mukhoty🌼 A book about 8 women of fiction and history,so mesmerisingly written and so beautifully capturing the essence of the lives of these women who turned the tides of history with their actions, born to change the destiny of women for generations to come. Ira Mukhoty brings out the innate humanness in each of these characters, giving the women of today, not goddesses or queens without faults, fears or vulnerabilities but rather women, with struggles not unlike our own and with fallibilities, emotions, experiences and expectations that as women of today can relate to. India’s history has always been one celebrating daunting men of valour and women are often subdued to the roles of mothers, daughters and sisters, playing an integral role but never at the forefront of battles, wars or their even their own lives and this is a grave injustice done to the women who crawled so we could fly. There are countless women who will forever remain unnamed warriors but we owe it to them to celebrate, recognise, remember and learn from their contemporaries who did manage to get their names itched in history and this book is an attempt to do so. If you are gearing up for the weekend and haven't yet picked a book (or two) to spend time with, we have two exceptional suggestions for you. Women Talking by Miriam Toews: Women in a Mennonite Community are raped after being secretly anesthesised. When they raise the issue, the men of the community refuse to address it and even side with the rapists. Now, the women have a very brief window to come up with a solution that will stop the problem from recurring. The clock's ticking on them! The Sea of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel: People from different centuries are brought together by a strange event that they do not completely understand. It includes an English Earl from 1912, a novelist from 2203, and a detective from 2401. How are they connected? You'll have to read the book to find out! Inspired by true events, Women Talking by Miriam Toews is "a chilling tale of systematic subjugation in a rural religious colony." It is "a wry, freewheeling novel of ideas that touches on the nature of evil, questions of free will, collective responsibility, cultural determinism and, above all, forgiveness." It was adapted into an Academy Award nominated movie with an all-star cast. I’ve never felt the need to physically annotate a book, but by page 7 I had my pencil and tabs READY. I found myself reading and re-reading passages over and over again. The prose was beautiful. Nightbitch is a modern version of The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I read that short story in college and loved it, so as soon as the references started popping up, I was obsessed. This book is hilarious, full of commentary and humor. It’s about self-acceptance and freedom, but also standing up for yourself! Nightbitch will draw you in from the first chapter. HIGHLY recommend. Which book would you choose if asked to select a book that tells something about who you are? This is a choice the women in Liz Byrski’s book “A Month of Sundays” are asked to make and then to discuss as members of a book group who come together for the first time on a month-long retreat in the Blue Mountains. It’s a month that will not only forge deep friendships but dramatically change how each woman sees herself and meets the life challenges ahead of them. Liz Byrski relates in the foreword she’d wanted for a long time to write something about women and reading. This novel is the result. It’s a unique exploration of how women writers “speak to other women through the form of the novel, how books start conversations, lead to friendships …” and of how women readers “use books to talk to each other, to connect with other women, to work out issues in our own lives and … to know what we are not alone”. It's a book club in a book where you’ll find the discussions of the books the women choose are so compelling, you’ll be unable to resist reading or re-reading that book for yourself. This was my first historical fiction regarding the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl!📚 The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5) Synopsis✨⬇️ Texas, 1934. Elsa Martinelli has found herself in the heart of the drought and Dust Bowl. Crops are failing, the dust storms ravage their home every other week, and her husband has abandoned their family. In this uncertain time, Elsa is forced to move her family to California in search of a better life. Told mainly from Elsa’s POV, The Four Winds is a story about the strength of a woman whose courage and sacrifice can define the entire generation of Dust Bowl survivors. ❗️Spoilers❗️ Hannah does it again 👏🏻 She captures the beautifully tragic, and very real, circumstances of living during the Great Depression. Elsa goes through hardship after hardship, only feeling like she belongs on the farm of her husband’s family, and then she’s forced to leave it for the safety of her children. This character was probably one of the most resilient I’ve ever read, and I admired that it was all centered around motherhood. Elsa does anything and everything for her children. I thought I knew what happened during the Dust Bowl, but this book was very enlightening on the harsh reality of the ravaged lands in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. Hannah’s use of description practically transported me there as the people struggled to leave the land they called home. This is definitely a survivor story. Elsa’s death was incredibly tragic, but I also wished Hannah would have expanded on that specific scene more. It was like Elsa finally decided to fight for fair wages and then bam, she is shot and dies. It felt very sudden after everything else was explained in such depth (in my opinion) 📚I suggest this one to anybody wanting a historical fiction read that isn’t revolved around a major war📚 #kristinhannah #thefourwinds #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #booksaboutthedustbowl #historicalfiction #booksaboutwomen #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booktok #bookshelfreads #booksaboutthegreatdepression #bookssetinthe30s #womensfiction #bookstagramfeature

26/40 #books . A really quick read and a good introduction to Didion’s work. The protagonist is a reluctant actress who is getting as much work as she used to and her marriage is a mess and so is her head. I didn’t understand why her daughter was in an institute, if anyone who has read it can shine a light on that question I’d be grateful! This isn’t an enjoyable read, it’s hard to watch someone self destruct, especially when most of the people around them are on their own paths of destruction. Didions prose is easy to get into and I’ll definitely be reading more of her work. . . . . . #amreading #amreadingfiction #femaleauthors #ukbookstagram #ukbookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksofig #bookinstagram #bookinsta #readersofinstagram #readersofig #readersofinsta #booksof2023 #readingchallenge2023 #goodreadschallenge2023 #thestorygraphchallenge #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammeruk #bookreview #ukbookreviewer #booksbooksbooks #booksaboutmentalhealth #booksaboutwomen #booksaboutwomenbywomen

📚Book Tour Review: Prize Women📚 A: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Thank you to @tlcbooktours for my gifted copy Synopsis: In 1926, Canadian millionaire Charles Millar leaves behind a controversial will: the woman who bears the most children in the ten years after his death will receive his fortune. This event (true, by the way) becomes known as the Great Stork Derby. Told from the perspectives of two women, Lily and Mae, Prize Women is a story about friendship and how this competition ultimately strains their relationship. Lily is a young, pregnant mother who flees to Toronto to escape her abusive husband. In Toronto, she meets Mae, an elegant, confident woman who secretly has her own struggles. The realities of the Great Depression and this contest weigh on their friendship, and each woman is faced with difficult decisions in order to protect who they love the most. Thoughts: This book really took me by surprise. Firstly, I was absolutely horrified by the concept of the Great Stork Derby-- the fact that this actually happened is disgusting. That said, I thought Lea did a great job depicting the complexities surrounding Mae and Lily's relationship. This was certainly a unique read, and I highly recommend it for fans of historical fiction books that feature strong female leads. ⁉️What historic events/periods do you like to read about?

⚡️REVIEW⚡️ This weekend I inhaled Crying in H Mart. A sad and sensational journey through grief, this had been sitting on my shelf for months. Managing a little of my own grief this season, I think I picked this up at the perfect time 🧡 Michelle’s relationship with her mother is particularly relatable to anyone where overbearing, cold, and “harsher” displays of affection (or even a lack thereof) is a part of the culture. Reading about food and the expression of love through meals, snacks and flavours was an absolute pleasure to read. I could smell the kimchi, the smoky bbq and hear the of crackling dolsot bibimbap through the pages 🍚 Funnily enough, it was this month, 10 years ago I moved to South Korea. I had the privilege of experiencing so many of these flavours first hand and like Michelle, made so many memories through the simple commitment of trying everything at least once. Crying in H Mart threw me right back to that very special time 🇰🇷 brb, on the hunt for some 순두부찌개 🍜 If you liked this, you might like: I’m glad my mom died Panchinko

In this innovative and intimate memoir, a daughter tells the story of her mother, a pan-African hero who faced down misogyny and battled corruption in Nigeria. Inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu — the importance of community over the individual — and outraged by injustice, Dora Akunyili took on fraudulent drug manufacturers whose products killed millions, including her sister. A woman in a man’s world, she was elected and became a cabinet minister, but she had to deal with political manoeuvrings, death threats, and an assassination attempt for defending the voiceless. She suffered for it, as did her marriage and six children. I Am Because We Are illuminates the role of kinship, family, and the individual’s place in society, while revealing a life of courage, how community shaped it, and the web of humanity that binds us all. A few years ago now, I read two of Kate Quinn’s absolutely brilliant Empress of Rome series and really loved them. Then for some reason I can’t pinpoint, she slipped off my radar and I didn’t explore any more of her historical fiction. Well, thank goodness for the members of #hfbookclub choosing The Rose Code as our monthly buddy read. It reminded me of how fantastic the authors writing is and how beautifully she develops her characters. ⁣ ⁣ The Rose Code is set in 1940 in the UK where specific women are being asked to help with the war effort in the mysterious and top secret Bletchley Park. Three very different young women, Osla a sparkling debutante dating Prince Philip of Greece, forthright and sensible Mab and quiet genius Beth who has a knack for difficult puzzles. ⁣ ⁣ All women assist to some degree with the decoding of enemy messages but as the story unravels, we find out much more about each woman as an individual. We know about difficulties in their past, stresses in their present and worries for their future. However, by 1947, one woman is confined to an asylum and the friendship between the three has been destroyed. ⁣ ⁣ This is primarily a story of war and loss for our female leads who undergo an incredible amount of pressure in both their working and personal lives, during such a tumultuous time for the world. It’s a narrative rich and detailed with so many different layers and avenues to explore that it’s a pleasure to get lost in it. The characters burst off the page with their individuality and vibrant personalities to the point where I felt truly attached to them as the story progressed. ⁣ ⁣ It appears I now need to read everything Rose Quinn has ever written, 😂 this is a stonkingly good read and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! ⁣ ⁣ 4.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #readingonmykindle #therosecode #katequinn #historicalfictionreview #reviewingbooksonthegram #unforgettablereads #highlyrecommendedbooks #booksandplants🌵📖 #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutworldwar2

I think in future I will avoid books with tonnes of endorsements in the front cover. It really doesn't help me to have too many opinions on what I am about to read- it just makes me feel guilty if I don't agree. I was really fearful that I was in sharp disagreement with all the endorsements on the cover of this book until at least the first 100 pages in. I really could not fathom what all the excitement was about. I didn't settle well with Elizabeth Zott or with her story and I half wondered what I was missing. And then, all of a sudden, I noticed that I was actually unable to put the book down. (I was actually late leaving the house because of it!) I've been scratching my head all morning trying to figure out what the turning point was and I'm not actually sure. I wonder if it was the idea of smashing up a kitchen whilst pregnant or the amazing Harriet. Or perhaps it was Six-Thirty the dog who is the wisest of them all. Who knows? I suspect it was simply a whole number of things that came together to make a great read, and some highly repeatable quotes, that I look forward to using at every opportunity! There are triggers- rape, childbirth, suicide, death (there may be others, too). So don't be deceived by the jolly cover- some of it is quite dark. I know some reviewers found the story of this incredibly smart woman being oppressed by most of the men around her made them feel pretty irate. It didn't bother me all that much but probably that was because I knew it was coming. I reckon it's very nearly a 4/5 but only because I didn't get it straight away. So... 3.5/5 if I am allowed. I may re-read it one day and revise that figure upward! #lessonsinchemistry #bonniegarmus #foundinacharityshop #lovelybooks #booksbywomen #booksaboutwomenbywomen #nearlyafour #bookswithdogsinthem #doubleday

Turner does this brilliantly, allowing Alison of Bath to speak for the legions of contemporary women otherwise silenced by history." —Daisy Hay, Financial Times "[A] superb biography….Turner's beautifully written, rewarding and thought-provoking book about this imaginary woman shows how much her literary existence has to say about actual women’s lives." —Gillian Kenny, The Spectator "This is a wonderfully witty, thoughtful and authoritative meditation on one of English literature’s most astonishing characters – a woman both ahead of her time and yet very much emblematic of the social changes under way in 14th-century England." —Carolyne Larrington, Literary Review. #princetonuniversitypress #wifeofbath @geoffreychaucer #canterburytales #womenshistorymonth #bookworm #indiebookstore #marionturner #booksaboutwomenbywomen #medievalliterature

I don't know what your Christmas is usually like, but I sincerely hope it's not as traumatic as the one in The Weekend.... After Sylvie's death, her three closest friends Jude, Wendy and Adele meet at her beach house to clear her belongings. It very quickly becomes clear that Sylvie was the glue that kept the group together and the irritations between the friends that she has somehow managed to suppress begin to cause friction from the start. The situation is not improved by an incontinent elderly dog, unwelcome guests and a brewing storm. The tension builds as the revelations start to surface. It's sensitively written, especially the way it deals with the topic of ageing, and there's a nice little cliffhanger to think about at the end. It's definitely not 'The Golden Girls', even if the characters are of a similar age. It's not funny or witty, even though some of the (many) reviewers on the jacket said it was. There are several places where the main characters are humiliated and that's not happy reading material for me, even if it's an important part of the story. Sad to say, I am not madly in love with this one and embarrassingly I felt tempted to skim bits more than once. Not saying it's not a good book, just not a good book for me. 3/5 #secondhandbooks #foundinoxfam #theweekendbook #ukbookstagram #paperbacks #threestars #bookreview #australianfiction #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutfriendship

A delightful, entertaining and informative evening at Waterstones, Oxford with Marion Turner and Janina Ramirez. Ostensibly it was an event to promote Professor Turner's new book, a biography of The Wife of Bath, but actually it tied in so neatly with Dr Ramirez's book, Femina (released last year), that I excitedly ended up adding both to my wish list. I love the idea of writing a biography of a fictional character but actually this book is also really about women in the Medieval age and how things have changed (or not) for women since that period. It was fascinating to hear that women in England during Chaucer's time had a pretty reasonable time on many levels, compared to women in other countries and even women in this country in later years. Sure, there were some really grim bits to their lives, and if you're familiar with the Canterbury Tales you'll know that the wife was a victim of serious abuse, so it wasn't all plain sailing. I also loved hearing about how even Chaucer's writing about a woman was heavily glossed in an attempt to make her fit a particular mould. I came away with the impression that the Wife has really become a symbol of society's attitude to women. She has been redrawn by authors and politics in each period. She has stood up against misogyny and misinterpretation for centuries and is still revealing more to readers today. The original tale definitely needs a revisit, especially as it's not going to be for an test this time! The book looks brilliant, both books do. If it wasn't for the fact that I have other bills looming this month 🙄 I would definitely have bought at least one of them. Anyway, the evening was nicely rounded off by a few glasses of excellent real ale in The White Horse in Oxford's Broad Street. A regular haunt of another fictional character....🐱 #wifeofbath #femina #marionturner #janinaramirez #bookevent #authorevent #books #booksaboutwomenbywomen #medievalbooks #history #newbooks #booksigning

'I have measured out my life with preserving pans rather than coffee spoons, she sometimes thought' What is it about middle-aged women? It seems to be accepted that we start to disappear, along with our waistlines and our youthful glow. And yet there are still so many adventures to be had, in spite of (or perhaps because of) the age of forty looming large. The lovely Jean in 'Simple Pleasures' has the most perfectly romantic adventure of all. Her humdrum existence, filled with caring for her manipulative mother and working hard to make ends meet, is upturned by the most unexpected love interest story I have read for a while. It's beautiful. And heart wrenching. And Jean loses her middle-aged cloak of invisibility. Which is awesome. I don't want to spoil it, but it's also a fabulously moving read apart from the love story/stories. The main plot about a claim of a virgin birth is gently handled as are all the back stories and character histories that are woven through the book. Loved every single page. A definite five star book; which I think the first one this year! Just as an aside, there are two other books that I have recently read where invisible middle-aged women who find life is turned upside down and there is adventure to be found where they may not have expected it. 'Miss Benson's Beetle' got a full five stars from my book group, and 'Meet me in the Museum', which reduced me to tears. Lots. Highly recommend. It must be my age.... #ukbookstagram #highlyrecommended #fivestarread #booksaboutwomenbywomen #lovedthisbook #bookswithorangeonthecover #books #clarechambers #smallpleasuresbook #couldntputitdown

Unusually, I have decided to post a few thoughts on this excellent collection before finishing the whole book. It's really got me thinking about how life has changed so much since this was written but at the same time there are still some pretty loud echoes. Woolf writes that for women 'Often nothing tangible remains of a woman's day. The food that has been cooked is eaten; the children who have been nursed have gone out into the world... Her life has an anonymous character...'. As I was reading, I found myself thinking how this is so much the experience, even amongst my friends. We have so much yet single, married, with or without children - living in 2022 in a first world country provides no guarantee that a woman's life will be equally as full as that of her male colleague, friend or spouse. This is a thought provoking collection and I have no doubt that it will continue to be a 5/5 read. #minireview #virginiawoolf #secondhandbooks #ukbookstagram #books #nonfiction #interestingread #booksaboutwomenbywomen

It's NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN in Canada, a good day to hear from Gabrielle in Nova Scotia, who does a lot of work helping young women. "I think my goal is to support young women to connect to their inner wisdom." Such valuable work for the older generation to support the younger. It was interesting to chat with Rika about Japanese ideas when they first hear about Reiki. This is changing over time as it becomes more known again in Japan but still many people describe this as their original thoughts. "For Japanese people the word Reiki sounds as if it is a cult religion or cult healing or something. So this is instantly what Japanese people think if I use the word Reiki." The benefits of Reiki on mental health can be enormous. In Women in Reiki, several of our interviews with teachers around the world today see them talking about how Reiki has helped them or people they have given Reiki to. "But I had PTSD. i would have nightmares and often cried or screamed at night. When I started to do Reiki and was giving Reiki to my son every day and started treating others, after a while I stopped to think... Where is my PTSD? I hadn't even been doing self-treatment, but using Reiki had helped me." pg. 292 Women in Reiki - Lifetimes dedicated to healing in 1930s Japan and today. #WorldMentalHealthDay #worldmentalhealthday #worldmentalhealth #reikibookstoread #womeninreikibook #booksaboutwomen #reikibooks #authorsofinstagram #reikihealing #naturalhealth #womenempowerment #booksaboutwomenslives #booksaboutwomenwrittenbywomen #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutwomeninhistory #originsofreiki #womenempoweringwomen #livingwithreiki #reikienergy #naturelovers #innerpeace #learningfromnature #japaneseculture #japanese #reiki #booksaboutwellness

Julia Boorstin, the debut author of When Women Lead, has herself worked in a highly power-imbalanced environment as a reporter at CNBC. For this book, she interviewed various women in business about the discrimination they faced and how their leadership changed things. Workplace discrimination is not limited to the boardroom alone; it is in fact the reflection of the pervading gender norms in the world. To explain how women founders and company heads face blatant discrimination, Julia uses social experiments, statistics as well as personal experiences as proof. She also talks about why it is beneficial to have more women on the board of directors and in leadership positions. Now, this isn't a new concept and has been previously affirmed by various sources. In this book, we get to know not only the woman entrepreneur but the woman within her too - her passion, purpose, and what led her to the business. The book touches upon aspects like workplace diversity, business research, and scaling, but more from a societal angle.
