I really like books that don’t shy away from tough topics. This was one of those books. I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 1/2 stars • • Here’s the thing. ONLY the very end knocked that half of a star off the table. I just felt it could’ve been a stronger and more meaningful ending- but thats just my thoughts. Otherwise, this was so good. I mean, so so good. The main characters are two female best friends, one black & one white. The story follows their friendship during a time where an innocent black child was killed by cops (who happen to be the white bff’s husband and his partner) and the black bff is having to report on it as a news reporter and feel the emotional toll of it. Having this book told from both women’s sides makes a great book club or buddy read, especially with a group that has both black and white readers. It opens up the floor for what could be uncomfortable but NECESSARY conversation about race, police brutality and navigating it and finding togetherness from multiple perspectives. #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #blackgirlsread #interracialfriendship #policebrutality #blackauthorsmatter #wearenotlikethem #coauthors #christinepride #jopiazzaauthor

Book review of The Sicilian Inheritance by @jopiazzaauthor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is a beautiful ode to Sicily. The fabulous plot - switching between the lives of Sara and her great grandmother Serafina alone make for a fabulous read, but in addition you have layers of history from a female perspective, medicine, mythology, a travelogue and a mouthwatering food journal to enjoy. Think tiramisu in book form. And it certainly did pick me up, I want to book a trip to Italy right now! Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers Bolinda Audio, and the author Jo Piazza, for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my personal, honest review. And of course thank you so much to the wonderful @harpercollinsuk who you may recall sent me an uncorrected proof which frankly I will treasure ❤️ #thesicilianinheritance #jopiazzaauthor #jopiazza #italiandynasty #italianhistory #booksaboutitaly #bookssetinitaly #italianfood #italianculture #booksaboutmythology #sicilianhistory #sicilianmythology #fivestarread #highlyrecommendedbook #mustreadbook #mustread2024 #netgalleyreads #netgalleyreviewer #booksaboutfriendship #booksaboutwomenbywomen #booksaboutwomen #booksaboutwitches #booksaboutwomeninhistory #booksaboutwomenshealth #booksaboutwomensrights #bookreviewer #bookreviewersofinstagram #booksmatter #readingmatters #notquiteabookshop

#bookreview Thank you to @hqstories for a copy of The Sicilian Inheritance by @jopiazzaauthor to read and review. The book will be published later this week, on Thursday 24 April. Please swipe for synopsis. Sara is in a difficult time in her life – her marriage has failed, her business has collapsed and her great aunt Rosie has died. Having spent the past few years working long hours, trying to build her business up she now finds herself travelling to Sicily to scatter Rosie’s ashes and to try to find out what really happened to her great great grandmother Serafina. This was a fascinating read and much darker than I expected. I’ve only visited Sicily once, 25 years ago, on a Mediterranean cruise. Jo’s writing brought to life how difficult life was for the women left behind in rural Sicily as their men travelled to the United States to find work. Sara also faced challenges and danger, not knowing who to trust as she looked for the truth about why Serafina didn’t travel to the United States to join the rest of her family. There are a few twists to this story and I couldn’t put it down, desperate to know what really happened to Serafina and wondering if Sara would survive. As a modern day woman it is heartbreaking to read how educated women were treated as dangerous and were vulnerable to the mood of the men, being accused of dreadful things. Happy to recommend this excellent book full of secrets, Sicilian history and strong women. I look forward to reading more by Jo Piazza in the future. #jopiazza #jopiazzaauthor #hqbooks #hqstories #thesicilianinheritance #sicily #secrets #family #adpr #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblogger #readersofinstagram

Thank you @jopiazza for my free review copy. I had this book with me in the fall when I was in Sedona and the scenery was the perfect backdrop with this stunning cover. Apologies to the author in my delay in posting this due to urgent family matters I had to attend to. This book is available now! This book is absolutely amazing! The research was phenomenal. The setting is Sicily and the descriptive writing describing the food and scenery is superb. Sara’s life is crumbling as her business and marriage have both collapsed at home in the US. Her much adored Aunt Rosie has recently passed away and sends Sara on an adventure to shake up her life, to see if their family is entitled to land in Sicily, and to solve the mystery of Rosie’s grandmother’s life and death. What Sara discovers is very interesting and propels the story forward. Learning about the lives of Sicilian women was intriguing. Sara takes us on a fascinating journey to learn about and fight for her family history. I definitely recommend you pick this one up! Where is your favourite place to travel to? Where would you like to go that you haven’t been before?

Celebrating a week of The Sicilian Inheritance being out into the world! Check out what people are saying! The Sicilian Inheritance by @jopiazzaauthor Performed by me and Carlotta Brentano Produced by @prhaudio Blurb Sara Marsala barely knows who she is anymore after the failure of her business and marriage. On top of that, her beloved great-aunt Rosie passes away, leaving Sara bereft with grief. But Aunt Rosie’s death also opens an escape from her life and a window into the past by way of a plane ticket to Sicily, a deed to a possibly valuable plot of land, and a bombshell family secret. Rosie believes Sara’s great-grandmother Serafina, the family matriarch who was left behind while her husband worked in America, didn’t die of illness as family lore has it . . . she was murdered. Thus begins a twist-filled adventure that takes Sara all over the picturesque Italian countryside as she races to solve a mystery and learn the story of Serafina—a feisty and headstrong young woman in the early 1900s thrust into motherhood in her teens, who fought for a better life not just for herself but for all the women of her small village. Unsurprisingly the more she challenges the status quo, the more she finds herself in danger. As Sara discovers more about Serafina, she also realizes she is coming head-to-head with the same menacing forces that took down her great-grandmother. At once an immersive multigenerational mystery and an ode to the undaunted heroism of everyday women, The Sicilian Inheritance is an atmospheric, binge-worthy delight. #jopiazzaauthor #thesicilianheritance #italy #numberone #mystery #thriller #newrelease #rachelfhirsch #narrator #audiobook

Sicilian family secrets…we’ve all got them. My friend @jopiazzaauthor just released her latest novel, The Sicilian Inheritance, based on her own family’s history. When she told me she was making a stop in Cleveland on her book tour (and to see the solar eclipse), my cousin and I happily took a trip to Mayfield Rd. ….. Because we have our own sordid Sicilian history. Should I start a book club/discussion group? Proud of you, Jo! And I can’t wait to read up! The bookish events are on fire this month friends, and there is so much more exciting stuff coming soon! Today though….I had the great honor of being asked to introduce @jopiazzaauthor and @jamiebrennerwrites at Jo’s book tour for The Sicilian Inheritance (have you ordered your copy yet?) at @bnphillypa In my true type a fashion, I wrote something up 2 weeks ago and had it printed with me, but when I saw the launch event where Jo and @jennymollen kissed like Britney and Madonna, I knew this wasn’t an event where you pull out your typed up notes. So I decided to wing it! Jo is exactly what you would expect if you follow her on Instagram, and I could not love her and her shenanigans more! In the second photo she legit just climbed into the chair and sat on her knees which is totally something I would do! Plus pre event cheese and wine with Jamie and @thesaltybookworm was a fantastic time! If you have not read The Sicilian Inheritance yet, I don’t know what you are waiting for! Happy Primary Election 2024, Ohio! While less people will vote today than in November's General Election, we must appreciate the time, money and effort that goes into each election. The boards of elections, precinct workers, campaign volunteers, media outlets, and candidates put untold hours of work into keeping American democracy strong and accessible. And today's election wraps up you can keep politics in your mind. Might I suggest the timely and entertaining novel "Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win" by @jopiazzaauthor It's an engrossing read about a woman's political ambition and the hurdles she faces when running for national office. #charlottewalshlikestowin #charlottewalshlikestowinbook #charlottewalshlikestowin #charlottewalshlikestowinjopiazza #jopiazza #jopiazzaauthor #jopiazzabook #womensfiction #womenrunningforoffice #womeinpoliticsbook #electionfiction #womenfornationaloffice #womeninpoliticsnovel #jopiazzapoliticalfiction

You Were Always Mine by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5/5) Genre: Contemporary Fiction About 320 pages Having a child changes a woman forever. But when Bluebell is born, she will change the lives of two women forever. Daisy is a teenage girl who gave birth to a baby long before she was ready to become a mother. Cinnamon is a woman in her mid-30s struggling to decide if her marriage and life fulfill her. They meet by chance in the park one day and develop a routine of eating lunch together, eventually becoming friends. While Cinnamon didn’t know Daisy was pregnant, Daisy determined Cinnamon would be the best person to raise her daughter. So one day, Daisy leaves the child in the park for Cinnamon to find. Cinnamon finds the girl and wants to do right by her but struggles to navigate the judgment around being a black woman trying to gain custody of a blond-haired, blue-eyed baby girl. This book tackled a lot of important topics including racism, the foster care system, what it takes to be a mother, childhood trauma, and more. I think that this book being co-written by a black woman and a white woman was key for how well all the complexities were discussed. However, at times certain chapters felt too long which diluted some of the poignancy… I personally would have loved more of the letter sections, but overall this was a solid first read of the year. Favorite Quote: “You don’t get a medal for surviving bad sh*t— if you are lucky, your reward is that the scales right themselves, and for each dark day, you get a bit of joy, too, which you can claim as your own. The reward is that you appreciate those slivers and scraps all the more. The reward is perspective, and that isn’t nothing.” #youwerealwaysmine #youwerealwaysminebook #youwerealwaysminereview #christinepride #christinepridejopiazza #christineprideauthor #christineprideandjopiazza #jopiazza #jopiazzaauthor #booksta #bookrec #bookreview #contemporaryfiction #bookstagram #bookreccomendation

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝗪𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐞 by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza. Thanks to @netgalley and @atriabooks for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ Cinnamon has fought for a secure and stable life. She has finally found it. When she finds an abandoned white baby in the park, it throws a wrench in her life. ⁣ ⁣ I love when these two get together on stories because there’s the perfect amount of conflict and tension. The situation in the book is thought provoking and shows racial layers of foster care and adoption. I was so curious to see how it turned out. I also enjoyed the letters which helped to tell the story from a first person narrative. ⁣ ⁣ “𝘐 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘦, 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 - 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘵.”⁣ ⁣ You Were Always Mine comes out 6/13. ⁣ ⁣ Qotd: Have you ever lost something and had someone else find it and contact you? WE ARE NOT LIKE THEM by @cpride and @jopiazzaauthor is one of the best books I’ve read in 2022! This book is about two childhood best friends - Jen and Riley - who are living in the same city for the first time since high school, when their friendship faces an intense challenge: Jen’s husband is a police officer involved in a shooting of an unarmed Black teen, and Riley, a Black broadcast journalist, is reporting on the shooting and its aftermath. This book deals with so many issues in addition to race and the way race plays out in America today - infertility, family dynamics, socioeconomics, and of course, law enforcement and their role in our society. I thought the authors did such a good job reflecting the experiences of Riley and Jen, and I truly felt like they were real people. DECEMBER.....Didn't get in as much reading in as I usually do. Was busy preparing for a Christmas that didn't happen but at least my home was decorated and my family was healthy. Happy with all my choices this month. Really loved The Wish. Not sure I ever read a Nicholas Sparks before. Yes, I have seen a few movies. Who hasn't? Loved the story so much and ended with a a good sappy cry (Don't we all need that once in awhile ? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. We Are Not Like Them was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. A friendship that faces racial issues in adulthood. Is their friendship strong enough to survive? Written by 2 female authors. Black Cake I was lucky enough to be asked to preview this amazing debut. It's a multicultural family story that didn't stop delivering. I see a future bestseller in this one no doubt. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. This is also a Jan pick for Book of the Month and I believe Hulu has it in development. Impressive for a debut. I powered through #wearenotlikethem. From the opening chapter it had me. The concept of being written from two perspectives is a really interesting one and this book is all the more special because of it. 𝗪𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦 by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣ ⁣ Riley and Jen have been best friends since childhood. Race has never got between them despite their different skin colors. Until Jen’s police officer husband shoots an unarmed black teenager and Riley is the journalist covering the story. ⁣ ⁣ I love a good contemporary fiction, especially when it gets into hard hitting topics that face today’s society. This was a close look at a friendship between two women. It showed us that while race shouldn’t come between people, it should be discussed and recognized. Our differences and our experiences make us who we are. This was a difficult read because it hits so close to home with police brutality. It’s a very close look at those who were involved and while it’s fiction, it felt very real. ⁣ ⁣ “𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘧’𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴. 📘 Book Review 📘 'We Are Not Like Them' by @cpride and @jopiazzaauthor The blurb: Riley and Jen have been best friends since they were children, and they thought their bond was unbreakable. It never mattered to them that Riley is black and Jen is white. And then Jen's husband, a Philadelphia police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager and everything changes in an instant. This one act could destroy more than just Riley and Jen's friendship. As their community takes sides, so must Jen and Riley, and for the first time in their lives the lifelong friends find themselves on opposing sides. But can anyone win a fight like this? My Thoughts 💭 : From the very beginning this story is incredibly moving with its hard hitting prologue. This is such a strong subject matter, and it really gets you thinking. It's a story that is very relevant and highlights Black Lives Matter. The collaboration works so well as we get to hear the alternating points of view of the two main protagonists. The dual narrative shows the impact the tragedy has on both sides , it's very insightful and we can empathise with both points of view. It's a powerful and incredibly tough read at times .. but an absolute must read! What I take away from reading WANLT is that we need to talk about difficult subjects , we need to talk about race. I also love the family and friendships in this story , I loved Gigi and I'd really quite fancy some of her miracle bread! "Not every story is black and white" Thanks to @tandemcollectiveuk @hqstories for the gifted copy of the hardback 💙💛🌟 I'm so grateful to have been included in this readalong. #currentlyreading Currently a few days behind on the @tandemcollectiveuk readalong for this absolute GEM of a book, so I'm about to settle in and binge on this tonight. From what I've read so far, I can already tell this is easily going to be one of my favourites of the year 👌It is so powerful and so beautifully written, with the dual narrative adding such an interesting layer to the story. A must-read if you enjoyed THUG. Thank you again to @tandemcollectiveuk - SO grateful I was selected for this one! PUBLICATION DAY!! We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza RATING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 📚SYNOPSIS📚 Not every story is black and white. Riley and Jen have been best friends since they were children, and they thought their bond was unbreakable. We Are Not Like Them is about friendship and love. It's about prejudice and betrayal. It's about standing up for what you believe in, no matter the cost. 📚REVIEW📚 Every once in a while I read a book and think “Wow, this this going to be big” – well this is one of those books. It wasn’t an easy book to read – it was emotional and harrowing but even though it’s a work of fiction – THIS STORY IS REAL. Even the title itself packs a punch and reminds us that sadly we do live in a society where the underlying prejudices of “we” and “them” exist. The storyline was gripping, and the characters strong and well developed. The dual writing skills of Pride and Piazza was excellent and I do hope there are more from them in the future. I highly recommend this book and am certain its going to be one of the most important books I read this year. Many thanks to HQ and NetGalley for the review copy. QOTD - Have you read this? Thank you to NetGalley, Christine Pride, Jo Piazza and Atria books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review* Previously published at https://www.mysteryandsuspense.com/we-are-not-like-them/ “Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow Don’t walk behind me… I may not lead Walk beside me… just be my friend” ― Albert Camus We Are Not Like Them is a novel about two best friends: Riley, a black woman and Jen, a white woman. Riley and Jen have been best friends since they were 5, when Jen was brought to Riley’s mother’s daycare. They are both living in Philadelphia now, close to their families. Riley’s career has taken a turn and now she is becoming a successful black female reporter while Jen, thanks to Riley’s loan, is finally pregnant through IVF with her police officer husband, Kevin. They are together at a bar one night when a news story breaks that an unarmed black teenager has been shot. They don’t know at that moment, but Jen’s husband is the one who shot him and their long friendship is put to the ultimate test. A collaboration between a white author and black author writes this fast-paced and timely novel. We are Not Like Them is told from both points of view and that dual voice is necessary in this novel to understand how differently both see the same tragedy. For the first time in their 25-year friendship, race is now an issue. While it is Riley’s obligation as a reporter to cover this ground-breaking news story, Jen faces the prospect of her husband being imprisoned and also losing her best friend, who unsurprisingly is on the side of the teenager’s mother. Riley must side with the black community and cannot heed Jen’s calls for support in defense of her husband. She is especially bothered because Jen has appeared on TV stating she has a “black best friend”. While Riley tries to see both sides, Jen’s inability to see where Riley is coming from bothers her. When she tries to explain how her life is different as a black woman, Jen cannot understand and it tears apart their friendship. Jen refuses to see “colors” but also does not understand why Riley will not come out in defense of Kevin.

"It's all too goddamned complicated. Human beings are too goddamned complicated. But for some reason, we need our politicians to be simple & neat , particularly our Women" - Charlotte Walsh likes to Win . This fiction by Jo Piazza traces the story of Charlotte Walsh, a Bay area resident and COO of " Humanity" , who decides to move back to PA & run for senate. Being a Woman is tough ; being a Woman in politics is tougher. This book has done a wonderful job of bringing out this truth ! . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 . Charlotte has to fight an opponent while adhering to the conventional expectations of a Woman as a public figure. The unfairness of this fight is pointed out repeatedly in the narrative. During her campaigns,Charlotte's sartorial choices are given importance over her policies & visions . The cut throat politics and tactics to collect funding for campaigns & garner supporters is written spectacularly . . The book is filled with strong female characters who support each other . Charlotte has a mentor who never lets her give up , a Secretary who has always got her back and a Sister-in -law who is always around to support. It's not always obvious, but strong female friendships are always instrumental in viewing life objectively & not falling apart. . ⛔️⛔️ Spoiler Alert ⛔️⛔️ . The climax is open ended - the winner of the election is not revealed. This is an interesting twist & the Author wishes to spark a conversation on how the story could have possibly ended. I like to believe Charlotte won !! . "I've found that the changes I feared would ruin me , have always become doorways" . . #bookstagram #bookcommunity #booksbooksbooks #bookishlove #booksofinsta #bookaholic #goodreads #booknerd #bibliophile #bookish #booklover #bookaesthetic #bookblog #books #booktography #bookworm #goodreadschallenge #readstagram #bookstagramchallenge #bookclub #recommendedreads #bookrecommendations #charlottewalshlikestowin #jopiazza #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #jopiazzaauthor #simonandschuster
