NIGHTBITCH by Rachel Yoder 🐶 1) Last night, I finished DAY by Michael Cunningham (you can read my mini-review in story / full review on Goodreads), now it’s time for… 2) NIGHTBITCH: I tried reading this a couple of years ago, but got distracted for whatever reason. So now I’m taking another stab at it. 3) I’ll be fully transparent, I am now prioritizing it because of the upcoming Amy Adams film adaptation, which is slated to premiere at the end of the year. And I am hyped. But back to the book: Everything about it has intrigued me from the first time it crossed my radar. Firstly, the title… you’re not gonna forget that title. The cover art is eye-catching (whether you find it curious or repulsive is up to you). Then the synopsis: a mother who believes that she is turning into a dog??!! I mean. 🤯 Whether this ends up being a triumph or fail, I have to know. 4) My progress: I’m only 25 pages in. And I gotta say, I am loving it so far. Our main character is already unravelling. And Yoder is showcasing some really sharp writing. I need to see where this one goes. När jag insåg att de gett den svenska översättningen titeln ”Nattbitchen” - och inte ”Natthyndan” - drog jag öronen åt mig och lånade det engelska originalitet. Sorterar in denna under Aggressivt Amerikansk AB. Mamman tvingas ge upp sin konstkarriär när hon får barn, i avsaknad på betald föräldraledighet och offentlig barnomsorg. Pappan kommer - kanske - hem på helgerna. Sakta men säkert inser mamman att hon håller på att förvandlas till hund. Inte en beskedlig, domesticerad historia, utan en blodtörstande som knäcker nacken av kaniner, och, familjekatten. En riktig hund? En metafor? Både och? Det är kanske det enda som hålls pyttelite subtilt i boken. I övrigt får läsaren inte komma fram till mycket själv. I stunder var jag underhållen, men det är en ganska tunn historia som sväller ut på över 200 sidor. För mig blir det väl babbligt. Och inte alltid så intressant.

"Nightbitch" by Rachel Yoder 日本語は↓ I read this book a long time before but besides not being active with reviews for months ( 🥲), this also took some time to process. The protagonist is a former artist who gave up her career to take care of her 2 year old son. Her husband is always away from work, she doesn't have any family or real friends around and she's struggling. Until she starts thinking she's turning into a dog.. This is the beginning of the story, a story I personally found compelling and original. The protagonist though is rather unpleasant, not sure whether as per author's intention. I feel sad for her feeling forced to leave her job, but she doesn't look for anything else, it's either a career in art or nothing, yet she resents everyone around her. She's clearly in need of adult friendship but looks down at all the other mothers... As a relatively new mother I found the themes relatable, and felt sympathy for the protagonist. Yet I wonder if the problem wasn't in her case how hard motherhood is (it is indeed!) but that she didn't fully enjoy being with her son.. I literally gasped and said, “wow” when I finished this book today. Fitting on Mother’s Day. Being a mom is a huge source of joy and fun and love and magic in my life but inevitably, being a parent is challenging. I felt like Rachel Yoder wrote some parts of this book with my experience as a reference. I felt so seen and so understood by parts of this book. I felt like I even totally understood the thrill and need to explore potentially shifting into a dog. Maybe if you’re not a parent or mom, this book won’t hit you so deep but I honestly found this book to be really emotional and it made me really reflect on the last almost four years of being a mom. nightbitch by rachel yoder; as i tend to be a huge fan of unhinged women in literature, i was really hoping to love this book as much as i loved my year of rest and relaxation and boy parts, for example. however, it was sorely lacking in everything that i love about this particular type of character. it is written as a comedy at first, with a woman losing her mind and being unable to contain her primal urges at night, hence having to go out to commit crime (usually the k1lling of animals) - she has an insatiable appetite for blood. this storyline is intertwined with the pressure that motherhood can cause and the need to be free and let go for a while, but of course this has repercussions on the children themselves and is evidently brought into the family home, no matter how you may try to stop the worlds from coinciding. the child begins to notice strange things about their mother, such as hair on her back which has stayed from her late night transformations (evidently a metaphor for the emotional damage that absence of a parent can cause for a young child). this book was a very slow read anyway, but i refused to dnf with the hope that it would improve… it didn’t. i have never been more annoyed at the ending of a book before; it was completely nonsensical and felt like an entirely different book. in saying that, the ending i found to be quite profound and hammered home the message that the author tried to convey, but the rest of the book was too on-the-nose for me to appreciate this ‘revelation’. i rated this two stars in the end, i am still so so disappointed :( #reading #read #book #bookstagram #booktok #instagrambooks #author #reader #history #historian #bookpost #pages #escapism #escape #lovereading #firstedition #bookstore #bookshop #readingtime #rachelyoder #yoder #nightbitch #night #nighttime #thriller #motherhood #mother #thrillerbooks #horrorbooks #family

Rachel Yoder/ Nightbitch Verstörend, skurril, bizarr, genial. So würde ich dieses Buch beschreiben. Die Parabel von der Grausamkeit der Mutterschaft. Darum geht’s: Nightbitch hat ihren Job als Künstlerin und Galeristin an den Nagel gehängt, um für ihr kleinen Sohn da zu sein. Ihr Mann ist beruflich unterwegs und nur an den Wochenenden zuhause. Sie fühlt sich ausgelaugt, vergleicht sich mit anderen Müttern, opfert sich täglich für ihr Kind auf und beweint ihr altes, verlorenes Leben. „Sie hatte eine Ahnung, dass Gesellschaft, Erwachsensein, Ehe und Mutterschaft zu einem genialen Plan gehörten, die Frau in eine Rolle zu drängen und dort festzuhalten, und diese Ahnung bedrückte sie zunehmend.“ S. 68 Doch irgendwann regen sich animalische Kräfte in ihr und sie beginnt, sich in einen Hund zu verwandeln. Nightbitch erzählt von ihrer Zerrissenheit zwischen mütterlicher Aufopferung und Freiheitsdrang, vom Druck moderner Vorstellungen vom Muttersein und von der Unterdrückung ureigener, weiblicher Instinkte. Sie verschwindet im Muttersein, wird in der Transformation zum Animalischen wieder zum Ich und findet dadurch letztlich zurück zur ihrer Kunst. „Das bedeutete es also, ein Tier zu sein. Man sah sein Gegenüber an und sagte: ich bin so sehr du, dass wir zusammengehören. Hier ist meine Haut. Hier ist deine. Ich hatte beim Lesen das Gefühl, das sind ja meine Gedanken, die da stehen. Andererseits haderte ich jedoch oft mit der Hauptfigur des Romans und den Weg, den sie für sich einschlägt. Took me 4 months to finish (average 5min to 1 hour reading sessions). “Feminist Art and the Maternal” by Andrea Liss. Bought this for myself while I was pregnant with Ellie. This book along with @artistmotherpodcast reassured me that I would indeed make great (and not great) art again, and maybe even before her first birthday. “Wild With Child” Ed. by Rebecca Jaremko Bromwich and Elena Finestone. Can’t wait to start this! Very new publication by @demeterpress “The Story of Art without Men” by @katy.hessel - have you been looking at art history through a fairly male perspective? Me too. Imagine where we’d be if all the artists that weren’t men were included in the story? Hessel attempts with great success, to change this. Bought this (pricey hardcover) while visiting @charlestontrust last summer and have yet to finish it but if you like her podcast and IG page @thegreatwomenartists you will be equally obsessed with this book - which should be required reading at all art schools. “Maternal Theory, Essential Readings” Ed. by Andrea O’Reilly. A classic (first ever anthology on maternal theory) and an excellent purchase for the academic mama. I am taking the year to finish this hefty book - a collection of influential essays by writers like Adrienne Rich, Alice Walker, bell hooks and Audre Lorde.

Nightbitch - Rachel Yoder As many of you all may have seen, Rachel Yoder’s Nightbitch is being adapted into a movie with Amy Adams meaning this absolutely had to move up my TBR. This is an angry book that explores female rage, inequalities, gender roles, artistry, and life itself. Referred to only as “the mother,” and eventually Nightbitch, a woman begins to believe she is turning into a dog. This is exacerbated by her husband frequently traveling for work and leaving her to be the sole caretaker of their very young child. The less you know going into this book, the better as there are some truly strange and downright weird turns that I couldn’t help but adore. Yoder’s writing its intense and strong leaving no room for ignorance. A lot of folks would argue as to whether or not this is a horror novel, but I would argue time and time again that it is. We see “the mother” struggle with the version of herself she has become compared to the artist she used to be before having children. There’s a greater social commentary at place here especially since essential parts of her identity feel utterly erased. Yoder’s prose that details the mental anguish and isolation motherhood brings felt visceral. And these are the things that happen BEFORE “the mother” notices sharper teeth, longer hair, and a strange lump on her tailbone. This is where we veer into the weirdness of the story and see the unthinkable unfold. Yoder writes everything with purpose evoking feelings of anger, injustice, and desires to run free. The role of artist is also compared to that of mother, both being positions of creation while differing vastly in societal expectations. There’s a lot happening in this book provoking many a thought and numerous feelings. This may not be a book for everyone, but if you like your fiction (horror) weird, you simply must check this one out. In case anyone was wondering what BookstaMom’s fridge looks like. Nightbitch came highly recommended to me by several friends with impeccable taste. Happy to report I loved it too 👍 The unnamed protagonist, a new mother, snaps on her lazy ass husband late one night after he blatantly ignored their crying baby in the room down the hall. He tells her she was kind of being a bitch, and to prove she doesn’t take herself (or some light misogyny) too seriously, she jokingly dubs herself “Nightbitch.” Except she actually starts to turn into a female dog? It’s unclear how much of her transformation is real and what is imagined - it takes exactly two pages for a reference to The Yellow Wallpaper to crop up - but what we ultimately learn is women are best allowed to be a just little feral. I like that Rachel Yoder dances with casual misogyny - relatable, our protagonist hates it, but is in someways complicit. Nightbitch goes from a self-deprecating third-wave feminist to a powerful mother-monster hybrid with a happy little offspring in less than 300 pages. It’s an incredible dynamic character arc with a throughline to all womankind. Yoder subverts and reclaims the idea of “being a bitch,” and the more I think about it the more I like it. I also really like weird books, and the story of this suburban were-mom really did it for me. I don’t have any qualms with the book, but for some reason it didn’t quite reach the level of a five-star read. Not sure why, probably just bad timing. Looking forward to a reread in a couple of years. 🥩

🤗Shoutouts to my daughter, my beautiful hand/wrist model. 📕Short summary: Nightbitch is about a frustrated stay-at-home mom who believes she's turning into a dog, which leads to some very feral behaviors. This book is weird, y'all, so I'll bullet my thoughts to prevent a ramble. ⚠️Trigger Warning: There is detailed animal violence against cats and rabbits in this novel. My thoughts... 📕As a mom, I could definitely relate to The Mother feeling underappreciated, frustrated, separated from her art, etc. 📕I didn't hate the writing style, but in my opinion, this book could've been shorter. Things got repetitive and dragged on. 📕The subplot was pointless to me. The mother reading the mysterious book about magical women... I didn't care about any of that. 📕There are no chapters, and it took me and my buddy about 25 pages in to realize that lol. 📕The characters have no names. For example, the main character is referred to as "The Mother". Little weird, but I didn't hate it. 📕Gratefully, the book got a few chuckles out of us. 📕My overall thoughts... Motherhood was drowning this woman, and she needed a magical life raft to save her. That life raft came in the form of embracing animality, which gave her strength, humor, a voice, friendship, and helped her get back to the artist within her. All that said, I'm not excusing her feral behaviors because wtf??? Il bambino risucchia tutte le sue energie così come ha risucchiato i suoi sogni, e il marito non c’è mai perché lavora. Quando c’è è uno di quei mariti/padri che delegano tutto alla compagna. La madre, perché l’autrice la chiama così senza nome, e penso sia una ottima scelta narrativa, comincia a covare un doloroso senzo di insoddisfazione, esclusione dal mondo, rinuncia e noia. Quello che prova è palpabile, comprensibile, e tratteggiato con potenti dosi di ironia pungente, e un giorno si evolve in un piccolo cambiamento: le spuntano peli sulla nuca. È la prima spia di un processo che le farà sviluppare doti canine e la farà trasformare per poter dare libero sfogo alla propria frustrazione. A parte il fatto che è divertente, genuinamente divertente tanto che mi trovo a sorridere, a ridacchiare, quant’è on point questa metafora del diventare bestia perché si è intrappolate in una situazione? Molto. La madre diventa Bestia di notte, dopo la trasformazione, e dopo che il marito, sconcertato e ironico, le ha detto: ieri notte sei stata proprio una bestia. Gli spunti di riflessione sono tanti, a partire proprio da questo: la bestialità alle donne non è concessa facilmente, perché è fuori posto. Una donna non può facilmente essere feroce, indipendente, appropriarsi di atteggiamenti che appartengono secondo la visione comune al maschio. Il maschio può essere bestiale, e viene lodato per questo, la donna no. Il libro racconta di questo, del posto nel mondo che vogliamo, che ci spetta, senza dover rinunciare a nulla. Del nostro io interiore che vogliamo sia il più famelico, libero possibile. Ab diesen Zeitpunkt entdeckt sie ein Büschel Haar in ihrem Nacken, hat das Gefühl, dass ihre Eckzähne schärfer werden und denkt, ihr wächst ein Schwanz. Sie nennt sich selbst "Nightbitch". Zu Beginn hat sie alles noch versucht miteinander zu verbinden: ihren Traumjob in der Kunstszene und das Eltern-Dasein. Irgendwann aber kann sie nicht mehr anders, der Spagat zwischen Mutterschaft und Kunst zerreißt sie und die Frau, die hier nur "die Mutter" genannt wird, bleibt schließlich Zuhause und schildert (zunächst) sachlich und ehrlich, welche Herausforderungen und Entbehrungen das Mutter-Sein eigentlich hat. Wie zäh die langen Tage sein können, wie schwer es ist, alle Bedürfnisse zu befriedigen. Und was es mit sich bringt, allen gegenüber die Fassade aufrecht erhalten zu müssen, dass Mutter-Sein der schönste Job der Welt ist. Nach und nach wird sie aber immer mehr zum Tier und hat Erlebnisse und Begegnungen, bei denen die Grenze zwischen Realität und Einbildung verwischt. Mit der Verwandlung in den Hund erlebt die Mutter eine unglaubliche Freiheit: sie kann ihren Instinkten folgen, die Bindung und der Umgang mit ihrem Kind wird immer intuitiver und einfacher. Ein Hund muss nicht aufräumen, putzen und waschen. Er muss nur die Grundbedürfnisse von sich und seinem Jungen erfüllen. Nightbitch 🐺 è un romanzo violento, orrorifico e meravigliosamente arrabbiato in cui Rachel Yoder ha mescolato sapientemente il body horror, il realismo magico e la weird fiction. La protagonista è una mamma a tempo pieno, ex artista ambiziosa e innamorata del suo lavoro. Come molte mamme, è stata costretta a scegliere tra il lavoro e la maternità, complice il classico marito assente dedito al lavoro e al proprio ego. La frustrazione, la solitudine e le responsabilità che deve addossarsi maturano in lei in una rabbia feroce che si manifesta in eventi sempre più strani. Dai canini sporgenti, dal bozzolo alla base della sua schiena che ricorda inquietantemente una coda e dai peli che spuntano su tutto il suo corpo, è evidente che qualcosa in lei sta cambiando, e non solo a livello fisico. I suoi istinti animaleschi prendono sempre più il sopravvento, fino a quando, una notte, la madre si abbandona finalmente alle sue pulsioni e diventa «Bestia di notte». Non è un caso che la protagonista, suo figlio e suo marito non abbiano un nome all’interno del romanzo. Scommetto che è una storia che avete già sentito, no? (Ovviamente mi riferisco alla prima parte, perché tutto il resto è così folle e inanerrabile che, vi giuro, ve lo ricorderete a vita.) Forse conoscete qualcuno con una storia simile. Forse perché è una dinamica che si ripete all’infinito intorno a noi e la gente quasi non ci fa più caso. Come se fosse dovuto alle donne rinunciare a tutti i loro sogni e ambizioni una volta diventate madri. Perché è “compito della madre” prendersi cura dei figli. È questo che ci inculcano da mattina a sera, che la donna prima di tutto deve fare la madre e poi “se riesce” può diventare quello che vuole. Tanto volere è potere. Ma nella vita reale conciliare le due cose non è facile, soprattutto se non hai un aiuto su cui contare o determinate possibilità economiche, e questo lo sa mia madre, lo sa la vostra e lo sapremo anche noi quando e se lo diventeremo. 성스러움과 폭력이 마치 피와 오물처럼 뒤섞인다. 생살을 찢고 나오는, 그것도 똥오줌과 함께. 괴성이 난무하고 차라리 죽여달라고 외치는 소리가 들린다.-그러다 죽기도 한다.- 저자는 죽음 그 자체와는 별개로 출산은 인간이 겪는 가장 폭력적인 경험이라 말하지만, 좀 더 정확히 말하자면 불과 반세기 전까지만 해도 출산은 죽음과 별개가 아니였다. 출산에서 경험되는, 파생되는 출산 행위가 끝난 이후에도 끝나지 않는다. 이것이 여자를 개가 되게 만든다. 조금 더 과격하게 표현하자면 미치게 만든다. 아니, 개가 된다는 표현이 더 과격한 것일까. 그렇지만 이것은 사실이다. 물론 어떤 이들은 이것을 마약에 의한 환각 혹은 정신병이라 생각한다. 어쨌든 여자는 개가 된다. 이 여자가 개가 될 수 밖에 없는 이유, 개라도 되어야 하는 이유, 개가 되지 않고서는 못 배기는 이유. 임신-출산-육아의 삼단 콤보 빔을 맞은 여성들은 설명하지 않아도 알 것이다. 그 어떠한 설명 없이 이해되는 것이 있다. 나이트비치가 된 여자에게 주변 여자들은 고해성사를 한다. ‘사실은, 내가’로 시작되는 이야기. 어디서 많이 들어본 이야기다. 여자들은 자신의 ‘모성’에 부합하지 않는 행동으로 인해 죄책감을 느낀다. 이 역시 어디서 많이 듣던 얘기다. 나이트비치는 보란 듯이 이 모성 프레임에 빅 엿을 날린다. 어떻게? 예술 그 자체로. 그는 창조할 수 있다는 것이 곧 권력이요 힘이라는 것을 보여준다. 이로써 그는 한 여자이자 누군가의 어머니이자 예술가, 나이트비치가 된다. 그 모든 정체성은 부분 부분으로서 그를 구성하는 것이 아니라, 하나의 유기체처럼 맞물려 그를 그 자체로 만든다. 절대 하나의 정체성으로 구성될 수 없다는 것. 이것이 나이트비치가 획일적인 모성 프레임에 날리는 빅 엿인 것이다. 나는 많은 여성들이 자신으로 살아가기 위해서라면 물어뜯어서라도 쟁취하길 바란다. 물론 그 과정에서 수많은 자기분열이 나타날 것이다. 그럼 뭐 어떤가. 우리는 태생부터 타인의 몸에서 분열되어 떨어져 나온 존재가 아니였던가. 이제 우리는 우리 자신이 그동안 당연시하게 믿어왔던 것들로부터 분열되어야 한다. 당신이 이 책을 선택했다면, 나이트 비치가 그동안 당신이 견고하게 쌓아올렸던 것들을 엉망으로 만들 것이다. 그 순간 본능적인 자각이 깨어날 것이다. 두려워하지 말라. 나이트 비치와 함께 달리다 보면 어느새 당신도 나이트 비치가 되어있을 것이니.
