On a sunny Mother’s Day in 1997, Elissa Free sits in a rocking chair on the back porch of their old farmhouse in rural Virginia at the center of Shenandoah County and readies a cassette tape recorder. Her 80-year-old mother, Ann Cottrell Free, seated in the opposite rocking chair, waits as her daughter sets the scene. “We’re starting again,” Elissa Free says into the recorder and notes the time. “It’s in the morning, about 8:30 or so. …She was in the middle of talking about ‘the girls.’” There had already been hours of recordings. “Mrs. Roosevelt’s press conferences continued,” Ann Cottrell Free interjects, and before they get started, her mother trails off about the beauty of the Lantz Mills area as Elissa’s then-5-year-old daughter darts in and out of the house. It’s in this hamlet about two hours west of Washington, D.C., where Elissa continued the personal oral history she’d been gathering of her mother and her remarkable career that began as a trailblazing woman journalist in the early 1940s. She had a front row seat to history, even though, at age 24, she was the youngest of Eleanor Roosevelt’s all-women’s White House press conferences, which often relegated her to covering the first lady from the second row. In thinking back on the time spent interviewing her mother, Elissa told East Wing Magazine in a recent Zoom interview how happy—and relieved—she felt because someday her daughter would be able to read about her pioneering grandmother. “I had been hearing bits and pieces of these stories for years,” Elissa Free says. “I wanted to get the information down in detail for posterity.” Back on the porch, the tape is rolling. Ann Cottrell Free continues to describe the women in the room who covered former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s press conferences. She doesn’t hold back. Read the full story by tapping the link in our bio. This is the first story in a two-part series about Ann Cottrell Free and her experience as a journalist in Eleanor Roosevelt’s all-women press conferences. 📸: Courtesy of Elissa Free/Library of Congress #firstladies #eleanorroosevelt #journalism #womenshistory

Which first lady was called “almost a myth” of the White House by the press? It is Andrew Johnson’s invalid wife, Eliza, who didn’t entertain as first lady, leaving the social occasions up to her daughter. Eliza was an integral part of Andrew’s rise in politics, and she ran his tailor business and household while he was often away from home. She also had a harrowing escape from the Confederate Army when Andrew was named Tennessee’s military governor. Read more about her quiet life and influence in my new Booking It Through History: First Ladies post. The military lives of Martha Washington, Julia Grant and Mamie Eisenhower represents a unique bond these three former first ladies share like no other presidential spouses. All three were married to military generals. They all supported their husbands through crucial wartime moments in American history—the Revolutionary War, the preservation of the Union during the Civil War and later through Reconstruction, and during World War II in the American-led defeat of the Axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan). But, these three first ladies also shared other foundational aspects in common that made their contribution to the White House remarkably similar and impactful. They came from families of means, they were well educated, they married men who worked their way up the ladder to become military commanders, and they understood how savvy social skills would benefit their husbands and their lives as a whole. “When you read how many similarities they have, it’s pretty uncanny,” Political Communication Scholar Diana Carlin, co-author of "Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America’s History-Making Women," tells East Wing Magazine in a phone interview. “And, it did influence what they did as first lady.” Today, the White House Historical Association releases "Military Roles and the White House," the 73rd issue of White House History Quarterly where Carlin, professor emerita of communication at Saint Louis University, takes readers through how the military lives of these three first ladies benefited the women while they served in the White House. In the article “The Generals’ Wives: Three First Ladies Shaped by the Military,” Carlin explains how the management approaches Martha Washington, Julia Grant, and Mamie Eisenhower brought to their roles as first ladies were influenced by their years of military life. So when you can’t sleep and are an obsessive researcher….. On this day in 1972, Pat Nixon, visited with gals at a local school in Moscow during their historic trip and enjoyed a cookie they baked in class. Although, I couldn’t find exactly what type of treat they made, it looks like it might be a traditional Russian Tea Cake. Either way, the trip resulted in the signing of two major nuclear arms agreements during the Cold War. {📸 used for recipe card: @chapmanu} @coldwararchives #CookingWithTheFirstLadies #FirstLadies #PatNixon #OTD #ColdWar #HistoricalRecipes #Nuclear #HistoryNerd #Cookies #1970s

On May 22, 1802, about 2.5 years after her husband died, Martha Washington died. She was 70 years old. 😪 When Martha met George, she was widowed and one of the wealthiest women in Virginia. Her vast estate included hundreds of enslaved people. She married George at the estate she had inherited from her 1st husband, known as the White House plantation. 💍 After marrying George, Martha split her time between his Mount Vernon estate and encamping with him during the winters during the Revolutionary War. After the War, she thought her husband would retire from public service and was not entirely happy when he agreed to be the 1st U.S. President. She was even less pleased when he agreed to a second term. 💃 As the 1st President, George Washington set many precedents. Martha set similar precedents in her role as the President’s spouse. As an aside, during her tenure, she was not called “First Lady,” but was referred to as “Lady Washington.” 💃 As Washington’s wife, Martha received a lot of attention, but she did not want to present herself as a queen. She established her main role as a ceremonial social hostess at official presidential events and did not become involved in substantive matters. She held weekly receptions on Friday evenings for anyone to attend. 😢 George died in December 1799, two years after leaving office. Martha spent much of her time after his death in an attic room at Mount Vernon. In 1802, she developed a fever and began preparing for her death, including burning almost all of her correspondence. She was ill for 17 days before her death. 👀 A crypt was built for George and Martha two floors below the Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. However, both were interred at the family vault at Mount Vernon and later moved to the current spot also at Mount Vernon. The crypt at the Capitol remains unused.

Michelle Obama is an accomplished lawyer, writer, and advocate who served as the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017.
A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, she began her career in law before transitioning into public service and community-focused roles. Married to Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, Michelle Obama used her platform as first lady to champion numerous causes, including education, military families, healthy eating, and poverty awareness. Her memoir, “Becoming,” published in 2018, became a global bestseller, offering a deeply personal look into her life and inspiring millions with its messages of resilience, hope, and empowerment.  Throughout her tenure as first lady, Michelle Obama was also recognized for her significant influence on fashion. She strategically used her fashion choices to uplift and spotlight diverse designers, making her a powerful advocate for inclusivity in the fashion industry. By wearing pieces from designers of various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, she brought attention to lesser-known talents and highlighted the importance of diversity.  Her support extended to both established designers and emerging ones, thereby opening doors and creating opportunities within an industry that often lacks representation. This approach not only showcased her impeccable style but also communicated a broader message of inclusion and the celebration of diversity in American culture.  Listen to Episode Six: Trendsetters to learn more about Michelle Obama and the influential impact she left on the country as first lady. #firstladies #firstladiesresearch #firstladieseducation #flotus #whitehouse #womenshistory #womensvoicesmatter #herstory #womenspodcast #podcasting #podcast

A visit to @firstladiesnps Part 3. As I waited for the crowds to clear up in the main exhibit hall (and for good reason), I visited the #frankiewelch #exhibit. “Fashion, Scarves, and Politics” featured pieces made by Welch and how they integrated themselves into the history of the #firstladies. My favorites have to be the #peanuts themed ones she made for the Carters. Overall, a beautiful exhibit for sure. @nationalparkservice #nps #findyourpark #roadtrippinfoodie

First Lady Dolley Madison was born #onthisday in 1768 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The site of her birth is now occupied by an After Hours Veterinary Emergency Clinic and Guilford College Animal Hospital. The rock-mounted plaque that stands beside the hospital spells Mrs. Madison’s first name as “Dolly,” minus the E. The vivacious and popular Madison was the first lady during her husband James’s two terms, from 1809 to 1817. She also served as the Executive Mansion’s hostess for Thomas Jefferson, who was a widower. Née Frank Folsom Cleveland, later changed to Frances. This biography has been the most uncomfortable to read. Thank heavens it’s the children’s version. Grover Cleveland enjoyed visiting the taverns and racing horses with Frances’ dad, Oscar. They were law partners and fast friends until his untimely demise racing his carriage through the streets. Grover helped oversee the will and finances of his widow and 11 year old daughter Frances. They later married despite the 27 year age difference. Cleveland was already president and rumors went wild about upcoming nuptials. Except many people thought he was marrying her mother! Nonetheless even at a very young age, she was an exceptional First Lady. She was well educated and committed to serving as an impeccable hostess. She drew criticism for opening up visiting hours on Saturdays to allow working women access to the White House official visits. In most instances her popularity exceeded that of her husband’s which wasn’t missed by his political opponents. Cartoons of the time show her carrying him on her back through rugged political terrain. #firstladies #francesfolsomcleveland #grovercleveland #librarian

Happy Birthday Dolley Madison who was born on this day in 1768! In regards to food, Dolley is probably most well known for popularizing ice cream, which had already been introduced to America in the 17th century and in fact, the first ice cream parlor actually opened in New York in 1790. She enjoyed many ice cream flavors including vanilla, which was extra fancy because the high cost of vanilla bean, with a topping of fruit or different sauces, but also flavors such as parmesan cheese and Asparagus {🧐} as well as Peppermint and Apricot, but the oddest of all was said to be her favorite, Oyster Ice Cream. The concoction incorporated oysters she gathered from the Potomac River herself, but the actual recipe most likely came from Mary Randolph’s cookbook, “The Virginia Housewife” and was then sent to Montpelier. So cool to note while filming this past week in Knoxville I had the amazing opportunity to learn about 18th century cooking & that particular cookbook, so stay tuned! 🦪🍦 #CookingWithTheFirstLadies #FirstLadies #DolleyMadison #Oysters #AI #Yum? #HBD #HistoricalRecipes
