Books that have come to live with me lately: 1. The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield 2. A Spell in the Wild, by Alice Tarbuck 3. Blackwing, by Ed McDonald Fantasy all. The first has been on my list since I read Once Upon A River, the second was picked up on a whim in @2ndchaptermatlock on Friday last, and the third recommended by @hblyne, ordered online and arrived today. 🤍 . ¿Qué propósitos lectores os habéis propuesto este 2024? . I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who is exploring seasonal living and green witchery. This was gifted to me last Christmas by a dear friend and I have loved reading it through the year. . . "It isn't surprising that humans quickly turn to introspection as the light fails. Just as plants show little external sign of life through the winter months, so humans, too, traditionally turn our attention indoors and inwards. If you're in the northern hemisphere, then these short, harsh days are traditionally a time of telling stories, telling one another how the world works, passing on wisdom and information. Winter gives us what we need, lets us prepare before going back out into the world when the light returns. Winter can be seen as a time of healing, regrouping, of doing work on ourselves rather than work in the world." . . I am so excited to be journeying through the second round of the Green Witch's year online course. We have such a beautiful group forming for 2024. If you'd like to join its only $10 a month and each month is packed full of seasonal and magical living. All the details are in the link in my bio 🤗🧙‍♀️🕯 . . #greenwitch #thegreenwitchsyear #seasonalliving #sacredcycles #cyclicalliving #thewheeloftheyear #bookrecommendations #aspellinthewild

I adored this book! So much so that I am now on the look out for a hardback copy. It is such an accessible way to start understanding what it means to be a Witch in our times. @alice_tarbuck made me really reflect on my own journey but also how that fits into a wider cultural, historical, and moral context. #book #reading #witch #magic #aspellinthewild #nature #witchcraft #alicetarbuck

“What a deep joy, I think, to spend one’s life trying to find new threads to connect us to the world, new ways of speaking with its secret corners, new points and movements of connection. We are of the world, and it of us, and we are wholly bound to it: what a privilege to be able to develop our knowledge of it through our senses, through our attention, through our determination to bear witness to new ways of working and being … Witches transform, hide, leave and return. We are able to change ourselves, to adapt.” “There is an argument, perhaps, that witchcraft is not a set of interlinked practices, but instead a way of understanding the world. A mode of thinking. A way of walking and looking and responding. That is isn’t magic at all. That all we are doing is turning ourselves towards things, pulling them into focus … Magic is turning to the world, and seeing it, and knowing we are indistinguishable from it, in all our embodied, strange, soft, and edgeless forms. We are in the world and the world is in us, and that strange network—from birdsong to beer cans, from hypodermic syringes to sand around our toes on the edge of the sea—is what thrums with power. Witches just know how to use that power. We know how to call objects into our attention, and work with them … We know how to hold all of the great, wide, grubby world inside us, and celebrate it.” “Witchcraft is the practice of living in the world as it is, not as we would wish it to be. It is the practice of using our will to shape and change the world, to care for it. It is to understand that there are other systems, other ways of being, that offer care, and kindness, and transformation … Witchcraft is the practice of holding the threads of the world, picking up a spindle, and starting to make our own. We are all witches, if we choose to be, in our vast and differing practices, and dedication to this world. The magic is in the wild, and it is also inside us. We are the wilds, and we are the hearth.” Such a beautiful book by Alice Tarbuck! … #aspellinthewild #embodiedmagic #newmaterialism #ecofeminism #feministwitchcraft

📚 August reading part 2 📚 Lots of genres already this month, with some non-fiction, sci-fi, and historical fiction. Any recommendations on what to try next? 📝 The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It's always a pleasure to read Le Guin's work; this novella was no exception. The blend of sci-fi and ecological horror was truly bone-chilling, and with the current climate crisis, it feels like a book everyone should read. Kenilworth by Walter Scott ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Having lived in the area for nearly eight months, I felt I should read Scott's novel about the local Castle. Knowing Kenilworth's history, Scott certainly takes some artistic liberties with the melodramatic plots, but it's still fun to read. I'm unsure what to make of the cheese-hating ghost Scott mentions, but I'll bear it in mind next time I visit! A Spell in the Wild: A Year (and Six Centuries) of Magic by Alice Tarbuck ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is another book I picked up at Hay Festival this year after reading the first few pages in the shop. Tarbuck's writing style is very welcoming, and the book feels somewhere between a diary, a history, and a how-to guide. I learned much about modern witchcraft that I never knew before, and I'd recommend it! #UrsulaKLeGuin #SciFi #Horror #ASpellInTheWild #AliceTarbuck #witchlit #Diary #MustReads #books #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookstagrammer #bookstore #booksofinstagram #bookstagramfeature #bookshop #bookshelves #bookslover #currentlyreading #reader #bookclub #read #book #bookworm #bookcommunity

Back on my witchy shit. Never apologising!! If there is the sniff of anything slightly quirky and unusual on offer, you can pretty much guarantee that I will be somewhere in the vicinity. Especially with my favourite wing lady @catwoman_kat in tow. Now there is someone who enjoys a good adventure or three!! Tonight fellow #bookhuggers my cossie got a nocturnal outing @cirenopenair #lido. #fullmoonswim they said. Why not said I and my fellow moon. We might not of seen our lunar mother-ship but we could feel her as we frolicked in the waters. Her magic working anyway. Being a #fullmoon we focused on what we wanted to release- and set our intentions on its energy. We are both in a good place at the moment- me with qualifying and Kat with the joys of her beautiful little baby. What we did agree on was letting go of people and things that aren’t bringing us joy. We have so much to achieve- why drag it down with negative energy. Which kind of segues into this brilliant little book I just read #ASpellintheWild- which is an introduction to the witchcrafting year and main themes. It made me realise just how witchy I really am. Loving the elements- feeling my senses tingle- being powerful. Funny how I read this straight after Enchanted. It’s like the universe is giving me a prod. Do more witchy shit. Revel in the wonder all around you. Don’t let anyone or anything dim your light. I’m off to be now. Good night bookloveds #readingandlidos #swimming #embracingthewild #bookstagram #bibliophile

So beautifully put by @alice_tarbuck (you can hear more if you listen to @bbcradio4 's witch series that's available on BBC Sounds)...and how apt that I read these words a day after I've posted about 'reading the green' 🌿♥️ And even more amazingly, this morning on the high street, I also had the most magical chat with fellow hedgewitch about the value of our elders and their so very precious knowledge and stories 🦋 I was asked by a guest who joined us for a storywalk here at the farm, whether I would be running any foraging and storytelling walks and after Alice reminding me of the above this morning...the answer is most definitely a yes! If people are keen to hear about the magic and the stories of the hedgerow, we do this in my Folkcraft day workshop on the 24th June (link in bio), and watch this space for some hour long walks that I'll plan on over the next few months. Meanwhile, grab a copy of Alice's book which reminds us that it's all about our relationship with the natural world, and get onto BBC Sounds to listen to the Witch series! #thewildofthewords #aspellinthewild #bbcsounds #witch #plantmagic #folklore #storytelling #storiesoutdoors #lifeoutside #lifeoutdoors @bannaubrycheiniogbreconbeacons

A Spell in the Wild: A Year (and Six Centuries) of Magic by @alice_tarbuck I just finished reading this beautiful book and I have to share a bit about it. 💚 It is of course best suited to those whose philosophies lie in magical planes, but it is not what you might think of as a typical specimen of the genre. It is a poetic tapestry, interweaving strands of personal anecdote, philosophy, history, science, folklore, current world events, and more. I don’t know exactly how to encapsulate it, except to say that it was lovely, and profound, and it felt like it was written just for me. I will say that if you’ve read Yoga For Witches by Sarah Robinson and/or her other books and loved them, I think you would love this one, too. ✨💚✨💚✨💚✨ #bookreview #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #witchybook #witchybooks #witchybookstagram #witchbookstagram #aspellinthewild #alicetarbuck #witchbook #book #books #ilovebooks #bibliophile #bookish #folklore #bookstahygge #hygge #folkwisdom #folkwitch

Getting back on track with my self-assigned required reading. Turns out, if I get in 1000words in the morning, I don’t feel obligated to sit and stare at a blank screen all day. And then it’s easier to put down my phone, settle into the big comfy chair with my paperbacks and a pen. So, I read December to April in #aspellinthewild and caught up to Part 3 of #thedabblersguidetowitchcraft. It was interesting to see a correlation between Tarbuck’s March chapter and the Rise of the Political Witch in the Dabbler’s Guide. Also March being the month selected to talk about activism may have made me giggle a little. The other unexpected crossover is with Beth Revis’s novel, #museumofmagic, which includes a a fair amount of historical research mixed in with the fictional adventure. I’ve had a few names and stories turn up in all three over the past few days. Has me wondering if I’m experiencing dejà vu , or if I really did just already see that name somewhere else. Love the mixing of history, mystery, philosophy, and magic. Love, love that so much of it transferable outside of witchcraft. Really makes Cate’s world seem closer. Magic is going mainstream. So, that’s it for now. Filling the well, making connections, taking notes. I’ve missed this, and it feels good to get back to learning. #selftaught #readingnonfiction #bewitchingthecraft #homecourse #homelearning #personalcurriculum #writingcurriculum #magiccurriculum #witchcraft #writerscraft #witches #magic #alicetarbuck #firelyte #bethrevis #reading #writingcraftbooks #books #bookish

I’ve been dipping in and out of A Spell In The Wild by @alice_tarbuck for the last couple of months, since it was recommended to me by a friend. It is a fantastic book, and a really interesting read for someone like me who has only really looked at witchcraft through an academic and historical lens. There are elements of this book that have followed me around after I put it down each time. The Cailleach in particular struck a chord, lodging into my brain in a way few things do. Offering me a sense of comfort when dealing with some of the grief and stress that the past year brought. This is a book for anyone who has ever found themselves casting charms on the off chance they will work, or lingering in places where something just feels a little ‘different’. It’s a book for those of us who grew up with superstitions that ingrained itself into our bones. Anyone who catches themselves wishing that ‘growing up’ was not considered synonymous with abandoning the all the fantastical stories we’re told. It’s a book that perfectly captures that echo of folklore and magic that sings still, even in the 21st century. #witchcraft #witch #folklore #magic #bookstagram #britishfolklore #britishwitchcraft #aspellinthewild #reading #herblore #spellwork #spellcasting #booksofmagic

#witchbookwednesday courtesy of ‘A Spell in the Wild’ by @alice_tarbuck This one’s been on my wish list for a while! It explores what it means to be a Witch today, whilst also reflecting on the past. Following the wheel of the year, it guides you through the seasons with spells, rituals and recipes. I’m looking forward to some witchy words of wisdom. Also…I had to get my new plant in the pic. Am I really committing to this? My full #23in23 that is. I can already feel my choices shifting and transmuting. The commitment fear is real. Will my choices deliver? Will I feel constrained by them? Will I go over to the dark side and read something rogue instead!! Part 3 is a mixture of non-fiction. Nothing old. Lots of new. Something Witchy. Something blue… We have Moshfegh, Awad and Jenkins Reid- ALL solid hitters. Bound to be a pleasure sort of reads. We have #AllsWell a sort of pandemic Shakespearean retelling. We have the title that I wish my life was- #MyYearofRestandRelaxation. We have that book what is going to be a tv series later this year: #DaisyJonesandtheSix. Chuck in #YouKnowYouWantThis- yes I do. Dark short stories. How did you know? We have #Motherthing- when @littleredlibrary tells me I will love something- it HAS to be read. #UnwellWomen looks like the sort of book that is going to fire me up. How Womens bodies have been mistreated by the medical profession forever. #ThePremonitionsBureau sounds like a ripping, eerie-tinged yarn. Then finally #ASpellintheWild - because if I get through this year, I am going full on feral witch!! The October chapter of A Spell in the Wild focuses on Samhain. In it, the author talks about traditions of ancestor-worship, as well more modern customs around interacting with ghosts - especially around Halloween and All Hallow's Eve, when the veil between the living and the dead is thought to be at its thinnest. Her descriptions of ancient and modern rituals are fascinating. Divided into "those designed for honouring the dead and those that help with keeping unwanted supernatural forces at bay," the author details practices connected with ancient Greece, historical Scotland and Wales, and their connections to modern activities, like American trick or treating (58). I love her explanation of 'guising' and the idea of a "mutual exchanging of luck and protection" through shared performance in place of the demands for candy (60). It makes Halloween seem almost more like Christmas, as a communal cultural practice to help us through a long, dark winter season. The rest of the chapter is devoted to the author's appeal to the Cailleach, a personification of the ancient world, a goddess of death, and power. It is a series of passages that include academic sources, personal storytelling, and rich descriptions of a landscape that feels foreign and familiar in a way that I think might be particular to an American impression of Great Britain. I've been there, but I'm not "of" there. I feel connected by a common history and the knowledge that my ancestors might have seen places like the ones described with their own eyes (and I have, in fact, seen them myself during my study abroad), but my day-to-day personal experience is much closer to the urban nature walks the author described in September. What sticks out about this chapter is that the author doesn't get the answer she sets out to find. There is no sudden revelation in her communion with the deity, although she does eventually find meaning in her experience. "Sometimes, the answers we want do not come in the shape that we want, and that is alright" (75). There is a message of patience and acceptance that feels very appropriate to a chapter on the dead. More on the blog! #alicetarbuck #aspellinthewild

“The world does this: demonstrates, occasionally, that it isn’t just connected to us, isn’t just a network in which we are one distant, autonomous node. Rather, it IS us. We are, then, overpowered by it, entered by it and transformed. And in the same way we enter the world, daily, and transform it, for better or for worse. Every time we act, every time we think, even, we are shaping the world and it is shaping us, and there is no escape from either. Understanding those encounters is the job of witchcraft. Learning how to enter into them, how to court them, how to cause them: that is magic.” -Alice Tarbuck (A Spell in the Wild, 2020)

As promised, I'm working my way through #aspellinthewild by @alice_tarbuck, going month by month with the book. She starts in September, so I begin my school year with the intro and first chapter. The details are on my blog, but here's the gist: I love this book. The writing style is beautiful and thoughtful, while still being completely relatable. She shares her insights through reflection and storytelling, mixing memorable scenes from her own life with practical advice, and a bit of history (with footnotes!). I feel like Alice and I are friends already, although we have never met. It's been so reassuring to see certain things, from cultural touchstones to urban life experiences, being shared by someone who lives an ocean away. I was inspired to add my morning walk back into my routine, and quickly discovered (again) that the most interesting things cannot be photographed. So, I put away my phone and practiced being present, observant, and grateful. 10/10 would recommend (both the book and the experience) 😊 #witchyreads #amwritingfantasy #readingislife #witchcraft #nature #wellness #readersofinstagram #writersofinstagram #amreadingnonfiction

Some snapshots of August. My Lammas celebration was quiet this year. I read from these two books, cooked a delicious meal with produce from our garden and a nearby farm, had a bonfire in which I burned something I’d been carrying for far too many years. It was time to transform it into ash. Sometimes it’s painful saying goodbye to parts of ourselves, or people, or places that are no longer woven into our story. This first harvest season reminds me that certain things must die to make room for new growth. . . Do you acknowledge the wheel of the year and celebrate the pagan holy days too? Today, I saw the first of the starwort. It doesn’t usually bloom until September, in time for Mabon. I wasn’t too surprised as everything is about a month early here this year. . . . #mondaymorningpages #musingsofapaganwitch #enchantedsimplicity #paganbooks #paganbookrecommendation #earthpower #scottcunningham #aspellinthewild #witchcraftbooks #witchybookstagram #witchycottagecore #hedgewitch #witchesofbookstagram #daintygrams #slowsimplewild #lifegazing #whimsicalwonderfulwild #shyinnature #lammas #lammas2022 #lughnassadh

Yesterday evening we gathered in circle for the New Moon in Cancer. We explored the words of Anais Nin and what they meant to us at each stages of life from maiden through to crone. 'And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painfil than the risk it took to blossom' We shared our experiences, we meditated and set intentions and as wild women we held each other in sacred space. When women come together magic truly happens! We have chosen our book for this season - A Spell in the Wild by Alice Tarbuck, a perfect read for the summer days ahead. What I’m Reading: Surprise book mail is the best mail. I preordered this book a while back and forgot to check the shipping date, so it was an excellent surprise to find on my doorstep when I came back from the swim meet yesterday. From the description: In A Spell in the Wild, Alice Tarbuck explores what it means to be a witch today. Where 'witch' was once a dangerous - and often deadly - accusation, it is now a proud self-definition. And as the world becomes ever more complicated and we face ecological, political, social and global health crises, witchcraft is experiencing a resurgence. Magic is back. Alice describes what she practises as 'intersectional, accessible' witchcraft - it's about the magic you can find in an overgrown snicket or a sixth floor stairwell; whatever your gender; whether you're able to climb a mountain or can't leave the house. Month by month, Alice walks us through everyday magic for extraordinary times. #aspellinthewild #alicetarbuck #bookmail #whatimreading #readersofinstagram #witchyvibes #modernwitch #everydaymagic

"And on Midsummer Day, we are called to notice the light, in all its huge, vast gladness. We are asked to salute the sun, to let it know we are glad. We are asked to hold in our hands the things it has helped to make - including each other - and we are asked to dance." A Spell in the Wild @alice_tarbuck ...and so the wheel turns 💫

✨ Neue Neue - June ✨ A Spell in the Wild A Year (and Six Centuries) of Magic Pre-order price: PHP 888 ISF / DP: PHP 555 Total: 1443 🧿 available for pre-order ❌ no deadline for pre-order 🗓 release date: 28 June 2022 📬 order here: https://uncommonplaceph.carrd.co 💯 all items are brand new and original 🇨🇦 shipping from Vancouver © Alice Tarbuck © John Murray Press 'Witches occupy a clear place in contemporary imagination. We can see them, shadowy, in the corners of the past: mad, glamorous, difficult, strange. They haunt the footnotes of history - from medieval witches burning at the stake to the lurid glamour of the 1970s witchcraft revival. But they are moving out of history, too. Witches are back. They're feminist, independent, invested in self-care and care for the world. They are here, because they must be needed.' What it means to be a witch has changed radically throughout history; where 'witch' was once a dangerous - and often deadly - accusation, it is now a proud self-definition. Today, as the world becomes ever more complicated and as we face ecological, political and economic crisis - witchcraft is experiencing a resurgence. Witches are back. In A Spell in the Wild, Alice Tarbuck explores what it means to be a witch today. Rooted in the real world, but filled with spells, rituals and recipes, this book is an accessible, seasonal guide to witchcraft in the twenty-first century. Following the course of a witch's calendar year while also exploring the history and politics of witchcraft, A Spell in the Wild is the perfect primer for the contemporary witch. #tarotph #oraclecardsph #tarotphilippines #tarotcommunityph #tarotdeckph #oracledeckph #journalph #journalphilippines #astrologyph #astrologyphilippines #magickph #magickphilippines #witchesofinstagram #witchcraftph #witchcraftphilippines #witchesph #witchesphilippines #wiccaph #wiccaphilippines #occultph #occultphilippines #crystalsph #crystalsphilippines #witchcraftbooksph #wiccabooksph #booksph #booksphilippines #uncommonplaceph #uncommonplacephbooks #aspellinthewild

"Magic isn't somewhere else. It isn't a series of distant rituals, ancient texts and expensive courses. Magic is turning to the world, and seeing it, and knowing we are indistinguishable from it, in all our embodied, strange, soft and edgeless form. We are in the world and it is in us." - Alice Tarbuck, A Spell in the Wild Yes yes yes. We are the wild. So beautifully and expertly put by the fabulous @alice_tarbuck and definitely everything I build my own work around now. Bizarrely, and brilliantly, these little gifts arrived in the post today at the precise moment I'd put down the wild herb Valentine's card I was making to go research some historic herb lore to write inside... ... The timing couldn't have been more perfect. Book 2 of 2022. A Spell in the Wild: a Year (and Six Centuries) of Magic by @alice_tarbuck … I treated this book like an almanac and read a chapter a month over a whole year, it was a balm for the brain through odd times and encouraged attentiveness to, and appreciation of, nature throughout. With relatively little focus on the hocus pocus I wasn’t put off by any implied need for special equipment or staunch beliefs. This blend of the history of witchcraft, modern practice and personal magic was a completely new type of book for me. Perfect if you’re interested in all this stuff but not necessarily practicing or fully invested; for the pick n mix witch! #ASpellInTheWild #ASpellInTheWildAYearAndSixCenturiesOfMagic #AliceTarbuck #BooksOf2022 #YearOfReading #NonFictionBooks #NatureAndMagic #Imbolc #ModernMagic #Bookstagram #AChapterAMonth #HocusPocus #ReadingIsMagic #MagicBook #PickNMixWitch

I was very kindly gifted this gorgeous book by Alice Tarbuck, from the lovely publishers at @johnmurrays in return for an honest review. A Spell in the Wild is an exploration of the Witch's year running from September to August. (With a short revisit to September within the book's final pages). Being the busy, modern Witch that I am, I thought that it was best to tackle this review as I go along, rather than rushing what is already a very intriguing and gripping book. The book begins with an inviting introduction, which really sets the tone for the book. Alice is instantly likeable, with a writing style that makes me feel like I'm somewhere between fact and fiction. Alice is very much a story teller, and it's so refreshing to hear of her path to becoming a Witch and all of the glorious ingredients that can be found within her witchy cupboards. After the introduction the book heads swiftly into September, which is all about foraging. This is instantly something I can relate to and there's even a cheeky Lord of the Rings reference, so what's not to love? I have just finished reading the chapter for January, which is all about Weather Magic, and ends with a Spell for the full moon. Alice includes some history about the witch trials throughout the book, which is really interesting to read aswell. So far I can definitely say that I would recommend this book. It's definitely been a great addition to my witchy book collection already, and if you're still on the fence, stay tuned for my next addition to this review. 😉

I also forgot to share this when I finished it a couple of days ago. A beautiful and very interesting book about the history of witchcraft and what it means to be a contemporary witch, structured around chapters that follow the months of the year.

It's a sad indictment about modern life that most of us are very disconnected from the natural world. Today's new arrivals approach this topic from two very different angles. We have The Book of Trespass, Nick Hayes' brilliant and passionate journey through the 92% of Britain that is blocked from public access, in which he argues that the root of social inquality is born of the uneven distribution of land. And we have A Spell in the Wild, Alice Tarbuck's exploration of the history, politics and modern nature of witchcraft through the course of a cycle of the year. Both of these books and many more are available now at Dark Rose Books - https://darkrosebooks.com/collections/nature #bibliophile #bookshop #bookstore #bookstagram #nonfiction #countryside #nature #naturebooks #rambling #trespassing #witchcraft #aspellinthewild #thebookoftrespass #nickhayes #alicetarbuck #darkrosebooks

🍂🍁happy sunday 🍁🍂 It feels as though we are in that sub-season within autumn where the dregs of summer have been drained and now winter is truly approaching. This morning I found a butterfly in my room (a common but so far unexplained occurrence) lazily batting it’s wings, waking up in the sunlight. I felt a bit bad as I tried to encourage it out the window, it seemed to enjoy the warmth of my hand and wasn’t all that keen on flying out into the cold. Reluctantly flitting away, it was symbolic of the last balmy days of early autumn giving way to this preface to winter we find ourselves in now. For many of us the clocks turning back an hour, bare trees and cold felt in your bones can be tough. The first frosts this week were, for me, a threshold crossed. @alice_tarbuck ‘A Spell In The Wild’ has been particularly helpful in taking changes month by month, searching for and appreciating the gifts each bring (more on this is our book review!). So, WBC would like to know: How do you embrace the change in seasons? or What are your winter coping mechanisms? Let us know in the comments x #autumn #winter #changingseasons #aspellinthewild #butterfly #november #autumnal #hearthwitch #greenwitch #nature

Holiday reads 🤓 All We Can Save. I’m currently reading this in circle with the Aligned Community. Tomorrow is our second session to review the chapter titled Root. This book, oof. It lights a fire under you from the first page. As I say, I’m only two chapters in but the wisdom, hope, and infuriating fact of how we have reached this point in the climate emergency is braided together beautifully through a myriad of essays and poems. I can’t wait to discuss it with the group tomorrow. A Spell in the Wild. This book is exquisite. It’s about the seasons, magic, centuries of witchcraft and modern nature connection. @alice_tarbuck writes exactly as you’d expect a poet to write. Her descriptions are magical in themselves. Woman on the Edge of Time. I finally finished this on my phone last week and it was such an incredible story. It was slightly confusing to read alongside @allwecansave as the utopian future lead by intersectional feminists and small, green, equitable communities created by Marge Piercy in the 1970s sounds pretty much exactly what we all need to bring into reality now. How has no one made this into a movie? It is so much bigger and smarter than The Handmaid’s Tale! Have you read any of these? Got any other recommendations for me? 😊 [ID: A snap from the treehouse last week. Two books lay on top of a cupboard - All We Can Save, and A Spell in the Wild - in golden autumn light. There is a large pear shaped candle holder half in shadow, and a sycamore leaf to the side. Behind is a window which is mostly a view of tree trunk!]

plums, apples & rosehips for a glut of jams, chutneys & compotes 🍏 I've been reading 'A spell in the wild' by @alice_tarbuck recently, and I'm not exaggerating when saying I have pages full of quotes and notes I've taken from her book. I cannot recommend enough for anyone looking to delve into folklore, celtic legends about nature & how to exist in better alignment with the world around us. Here's one of my favourite quotes from the chapter, 'September' 🍂 "To discover something, pick it. Take it home and make something out of it. Jam to glisten on shelves through winter is the most elementary form of magic. You are providing for yourself. Bottling up summer to see you through the darkest of times. You are trapping sunlight in with the sugar, to unscrew when the days are hung rain and bitter winds. You are affirming a belief that you deserve sweet things and that sweet things are worth working for." - @alice_tarbuck #ASpellInTheWild
