Cooking is one of the oldest and most overlooked forms of magick. 🥄✨ Like all spellwork, cooking requires a mix of specific ingredients, intuition, and intention. The ingredients and intuition are up to the maker, and Bay Laurel would like to help with the third part: intention. 🍃 The Magick of Bay Leaf 🍃 Imbued with the essence of our fiery sun, bay leaves are vehicles for shapeshifting, creativity, and protection. In spellwork they can be burned or buried, or tossed in your cauldron for a bit of kitchen witchery (think soup spells and enchanted sauces). In greek mythology, Bay Laurel is threaded into the stories of heroes and huntresses, included Apollo, Daphne, and the goddess Diana. As the ol’ tale goes, Apollo falls in love with the Daphne the wood nymph. But as follower of Diana’s, the young huntress does not return Apollo’s affection. Wounded by pride, he pursues her, chasing her through the wildwood. Daphne summons her river god father, who offers escape in the form of a tree. Daphne agrees, shapeshifts from person to plant, and the first Bay Laurel tree is born. 🌳 This practical but oh-so-magickal plant was one of the inspirations for our latest book, “Telling the Bees.” Not only will you hear bay leaf whispering from between the pages of this fairy tale, but it also shows up in Madam Spider Spell Kit via the wishing spells borrowed from the weaver’s grimoire! I've been saving this spell from @covencle for the perfect moment. My intention is to invite in a calm, sustainable, abundant, creative, generous way to show up in the world. I pray to spirit to give me the energy, balanced mood and resources to sustain the abundance I wish to share. I have been studying herbalism for a decade. I've traveled all over the country studying with different teachers, exploring new eco systems and becoming deeply acquainted with so many wonderful plants. I have intimately learned how plants can work wonders physically, emotionally, psychically and magically. I remember 26 and completely obsessed with herbalism. It was like something clicked inside of me and I couldn't turn it off. I haunted @maypopherbshop and couldn't get enough. I am looking for those who are enchanted by the plant world, those who are hungry for more. I want to feel fortified and able to step up and be a guide for you. Potentilla - Tormentil - Cinquefoil A bit of ethnobotanical info: Potentillas may also be called cinquefoils in English, but they have also been called five fingers and silverweeds. Some species are called tormentils, though this is often used specifically for common tormentil (P. erecta). John George Hohman mentions it in his famous book "The Long Lost Friend" , saying “If you call upon another to ask for a favor, take care to carry a little of the five-finger grass with you, and you shall certainly obtain that you desired” (Hohman, #14). This particular herb is a very positive one. It’s used for protection because of its hand-like shape (imagine a hand held up to halt evil in its tracks), but also in love spells, money and luck workings, and even travel magic. I gather virtually or in person with my coven each month. This month it happened to fall on today's new moon in Aries♈ What a perfect day for it! Apparently there is an old tradition of gathering chicory in total silence at midnight on midsummer with a golden knife: this would endow powers of invisibility and the ability to open any locks touched. .
