Sunday, 26th May 2024 - 10:00am. Dundee Dookers do a dismally dreich dip! We can easily count on one hand how many of our dips have been a little on the soggy side. We're lucky to have such good weather, so we can grin and bear the odd rainstorm! Well done to 12 of our guys for a solid 10 minutes in the water at 9.8°. Today marks officially 1 week since I was diagnosed with chronic long-covid. It all started when I began to experience incredible chest pain coming from my heart. I was terrified but at the same time I was so done of all these health issues that the energy to worry was under the roof 🫤 After 4 A&E trips, they diagnosed with pericarditis (inflammation of the heart membrane) luckily it’s curable and I’m starting to feel better, however doctors did confirm that it’s extremely common in patient with long-covid and could come back unexpectedly. 🥲🫤🤩 Many close friends warned us that doctors do not diagnose long-covid, anyway we still had hope. I was lucky to find a doctor that did experiences in third person someone with long-covid and was aware of its existence. He ended up writing my diagnosis: chronic long-covid.🤩 Since that day, I felt “free” and finally that I can prove that I wasn’t going crazy but I am still ill - without a known time of end. Met with a pain specialist from Toronto this morning: this doc was super nice and actually stated what is wrong with my back and how the pain is clearly coming from it! He will be giving me two injections in the coming weeks straight into the spine. This should help provide me with some relief while I continue to wait for surgery. A new MRI has also been ordered to check on the deterioration of my back and determine surgery readiness. I have had to fight over and over again with multiple doctors and surgeons to get help. For them to understand that my pain is not caused by my mental health. That my pain is not something I am using to get attention. I have serious issues with my back and hips which could have been prevented if I was taken seriously all those years ago. Keep fighting for yourself! No one knows your body better than you! Since August I’ve experience an endless amount of gaslighting from doctors - who instead are supposed to help us. I don’t blame them entirely… the NHS is going truly downhill and the resources are limited but I still believe they should take care of every patient with the same determination instead of dismissing, assuming, blaming on and so on. 🥹🙃 Unfortunately, my experience with doctors in Spain wasn’t so different. I still had the same amount of gaslight but added on with the language barrier. I didn’t expect them to be so rude, aggressive and kind of “racist” to English speakers. Whenever things aren’t going to plan, after a period of defaulting to initial self comparison/ frustration, I try to reflect fully on the bigger picture and my progress so far. I’m a firm believer in not dwelling too long in the negative, yes it is important to feel ALL emotions, but then it is equally as important to process them and begin to look at what positive can be taken from it to move forward. The picture on the left is one I always like to use to mark the beginning of my journey with Han! It was around 3 months prior to me signing up with her, and probably the biggest I’ve ever been (other than post pregnancy). By the time I began my coaching I’d lost possibly a little weight on my own, but in unhealthy ways and with a binge/ starve cycle, so it always bounced back up! 🤦🏽‍♀️ The second picture is Wednesday evening, post one night shift and pre another, and 4 YEARS after that initial picture was taken. 🙌🏽 We’re well into my prep now, and stalling a little. Weight is holding stubbornly, and we think I’m just hella fatigued from: working long hours, being a mama, lower food, and pushing so hard….BUT, these things have never stopped me before, and I’m not starting now! 🤨 When I compare these pictures, I’m actually super proud of the woman I see in BOTH of them: The woman on the left made the decision to make a significant change to the way she thinks about and treats herself, she made the decision to show her children what hard work and pride in oneself looks like, and she has stuck to it for the past 4 years! Im proud of her! 🥰 The woman on the right is striving for her best look to date! She’s switched up her body composition significantly, carrying more tissue vs fat than her former self, she has mostly good days now when it comes to self image, and recognises that this journey is ongoing! A study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that those who go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier are at a lower risk of clinical depression. Stress, anxiety, and depression are all linked to sleep. Studies show that 70-80% of people with anxiety disorders report trouble sleeping. One UC Berkeley study showed that sleep deprived individuals showed an increase of 30% in anxiety levels. The amygdala, the area of the brain which directs emotional responses, was unchanged on fMRI scans of people experiencing sleep issues, but the prefrontal cortex (the center of emotional regulation, decision-making, and critical thinking) showed diminished activity. A night of poor sleep lowers pain tolerance the next day by 15 percent. I think when you’re in a mental crisis you forget that you can get physically unwell. I was breathless for two weeks before I collapsed and ended up in hospital for a week. They tried to wean me off oxygen three times. I have been home a little over a week, so I took Mattie out for a little walk and my sats dropped (they were in the 80’s in hospital, normally my sats are 99-100) and my pulse went up. Sunday, 28th April 2024 - 12:00-2:00pm. Part 2/2 - Kingsbarns beach. Meanwhile... in Fife, a group of our guys had the absolute pleasure of heading back to the @wildscottishsauna located at Kingsbarns beach. We previously visited in December last year and loved it that much, we came back! We're big advocates for heat therapy for health and wellbeing, alongside cold water immersion. We spent the session moving between the sauna and a short walk down to the beach, dipping for a total of 12-15 minutes. Alternating between extremes of heat and cold can have incredible benefits to blood circulation, pain reduction, cardiovascular function, detoxification, stress management and relaxation. Spending time as a group also gives us a valuable opportunity to catch up, have a blether and strengthen the bonds of our small wild swimming community. We ended the day with a short walk and lunch in St. Andrews! Dealing with ulcerative colitis often means hiding discomfort, even on special occasions. Sunday, 21st April 2024 - 10:00am A massive well done to our guys for another fantastic wild swim, and braving the waters for a total of 10 minutes. That's the longest dip we've had, yet! We also welcomed Steve and Ian - two of our newest Dookers - to the group. Steve and Ian aren't new to wild swimming, but were keen to explore connections with a larger group. After seeing us through social media, and regularly dipping down at the Tay, they go in touch. Of course, we topped off our Sunday morning with a short walk to our local, the Fisherman's Tavern, for hot drinks, breakfast rolls and a blether. An excellent opportunity to have a laugh, meet new people and catch up with friends.
