Solid Sunday back session . Excited because I can visualise what is under there . Months of being at maintenance or a slight surplus has done its job as I want to keep as much muscle mass which is the only way you get that leaner shape. So no I won’t be flogging myself doing hours of cardio and I won’t be dropping cals to a ridiculously low amount . I haven’t spent the last year or so at maintenance /and or a surplus to ruin it all by going back to a diet of 1200 cals !!! Benefits: Precision Rear Delt Targeting: Directly hits the rear deltoids, crucial for a balanced and sculpted shoulder. Engages Upper Back: Activates the rhomboids and traps, supporting upper back strength. Posture Enhancement: Promotes better posture through improved muscle symmetry around the shoulder girdle. Technique: Setup: Adjust the cable pulleys to shoulder height, standing between them facing away from the machine. Grip: Cross your arms to grab the opposite cable handles — right hand to the left pulley and left hand to the right pulley. Stance: Stand with a slight bend in the knees, and hinge forward slightly from the hips, maintaining a strong, stable core. Execution: Keeping a slight bend in your elbows, extend your arms out to the sides in a reverse fly motion, pulling the cables apart. Stretchers are movements that are hardest in the stretched position, while squeezers are movements that are hardest in the squeezed position. My back is my favourite muscle group to train despite the fact I rarely “see” it! 👀 Thinking about my own training and coaching advice, here are 3 things that stand out if you’re trying to build your back too 👇🏼 1️⃣ Doing exercises with perfect form. I would hedge a bet that over 90% of people are adopting improper form without knowing it. Make the correction and you will feel your back working in an entirely different way. This will almost certainly require doing less reps initially, but sometimes you’ve got to “regress to progress”! 2️⃣ Adding isometric “pauses” to rows.  This means that when your elbows are pulled back and your shoulder blades are pulled together, you pause for at least a ½  second before straightening your arms. This will challenge your back muscles in their shortened position. It will also ensure that you use an appropriate weight, because many people go too heavy to pause and truly “own the weight “ 3️⃣ Working through all angles. We can work our back through Horizontal Rows (such as Seated Rows), Vertical Rows (such as Lat Pull Downs) and Bend/Hinge Movements (such as Romanian Deadlifts). I hear it all the time. Why does my back still look the same? What do I have to do to build my back properly? It’s my favorite muscle group to work because there are many variations of form to hit the back differently. To break it down in layman’s terms majority of people think of two parts to the back: Lats and mid-back… but it consists of Latissimus Dorsi (lats), Rhomboid Major and Minor (mid back) and Trapezius (traps). There are 40 muscles in your back, 20 each side. Split into 3 categories. 1. Intrinsic or deep muscles: these are fused with the vertebral column 2. Superficial muscles: help with shoulder and neck movements 3. Intermediate muscles: provide movement of the thoracic cage (ribs) While you might not be able to workout a good portion of these muscles, it’s good to know they’re there. Looking to effectively work out your back? Follow these quick and effective tips: Focus on form: form is EVERYTHING, we go over it all the time. Keep your chest up in all movements. Best way to engage your lats: underhand grip and pull with your elbows. Don’t over exaggerate the pull passed hips or back. Overhand grip will engage mid back. But in rows elbows need to stay high to not engage lats. Two techniques I prefer: 1. Time under tension using a 2-3 second contraction and negative. 2. Explode contraction into a 2-3 second negative Make sure you do a full extension on the negative to fully stretch the muscles. These are 3 of my favorite exercises 1. Hammer strength overhead pulldowns. 4 sets 10 -12 reps each 2. Rack pulls: 4 sets 10 - 12 reps each 3. Mag grip pull downs: 3 - 4 sets 10 - 12 reps each Incorporate these into your routine and get the back you deserve! Ready to take the next step?
