Good morning, it’s a beautiful sunny day here in Lancaster, a much needed boost of vitamin D incoming for us all. I’m going to lie in the yarden and let it all soak into my bare skin. But first breakfast and reading. I highly recommend this amazing book by @seed_sistas my friend got it me four years ago for my birthday and it’s one of my favourites, little did I know that 3 years later I would meet the authors in person and listen to one of their amazing talks. If you want to get to know the plants of the season at a deeper level, this is a book for you. 🌿

The recent walks through the garden of lichens and mosses made me curious to dive into lives of mosses a little deeper. Kimmerer’s writing is a pleasure to read - her Braiding SweetGrass is my go to for spiritual reading about forests. Gathering Moss is an adornment of science, spirituality and the world of mosses.. freshly are the days as I walk through forests and mountains…🌲🌲🌲🌲🌱 #gatheringmoss #robinwallkimmerer #plantscience #mossscience #mosslove #lichenlove #booksaboutplants #booksonmoss

A fab #8brilliantbooks topic this week, one that links perfectly to the time of year, encouraging curiosity and exploring nature as well as the Key Stage 1 and 2 plants science curriculum. Everything is getting greener and we've been busying away in the garden planting. In school we are studying root growth and have conducted experiments to see how water is transported around plants. It's that time of the year and several people requested this #8brilliantbooks theme for supporting science and wider curriculum learning and EYFS provision. I've tried to give a mix of picture books and non-fiction and an excited to see what everyone else chooses. Please share using #8brilliantbooks2024_plants if you can so people can locate them more easily. Have a lovely week. The Seed Keeper is a multigenerational family saga that weaves together the stories of Dakhóta women through history as it highlights the violence inflicted upon them, their families, and their land and the damage still being done. It's a five-star book that should become a classic. "Maybe we all carry that instinct to return home, to the horizon line that formed us, to the place where we first knew the world." The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson The Seed Keeper hit me hard. Growing up on a farm during the 1980s farm crisis, there were so many things I could relate to, so many lessons learned that I've carried into adulthood and try to pass on to my children. What I couldn't relate to was the Indigenous experience of Rosalie Iron Wing, Gaby Makepeace, and Marie Blackbird, but while I can't relate, I can empathize. The story of Rosalie reminds me of the sad truth that we often see Native Americans, our Indigenous people, as others...as someone other than ourselves, and when we put that distance between us and them, we fail to see them for who they truly are. They are people. They are the original owners of the land we live on. The Seed Keepers highlights living off the land foraging, hunting, and growing our own food. I'm passionate about our Earth and growing our own pesticide-feee food whenever possible. Fig trees are fascinating for many reasons. So when I heard about a book written by @shrutree that offered a deep dive into fig world, I went looking for it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a copy until I visited the awesome folks at @travelling_bookshop who champion the cause of Indian children's literatue with great passion. The book, written by the prolific Shruti Rao, and containing illustrations by the super-talented @green_humour amongst others, is delightful in so many ways. For starters, the narrator is a peepal tree...isn't that a super idea? From names of common fig trees to their love story with fig wasps, the reader is drawn into the little-known ecosystem of figs. And why is it called The Secret Garden? Well, it's a very clever title...that pulls you in and tells you much, without you knowing it! Shruti has a new book out, her first in the US, that sounds absolutely delightful too. Check out this one and raise a toast to figs, a key stone species and rockstar of the tree world. If you can't find the book at yr local bookstore or online, contact @travelling_bookshop ...they ship books to wherever you want. #shrutirao #figtrees #rohanchakravarty #treestreestrees #figs #figwasp #booksaboutplants #booksabouttrees #bookrecommendations #funkyrainbow #mallikaravikumar #treetalkwithmallikaravikumar #treebooks #booksforkids #ChildrensLiterature #childrensbooks #treesofinstagram #treesofindia

Thank you Vincent Shiron from Harper Collins Publishers @harpercollins. The Light Eaters by Zoe Schlanger (pub date: My 7th) sounds fascinating. 📖 synopsis: It takes tremendous biological creativity to be a plant. To survive and thrive while rooted in a single spot, plants have adapted ingenious methods of survival. In recent years, scientists have learned about their ability to communicate, recognize their kin and behave socially, hear sounds, morph their bodies to blend into their surroundings, store useful memories that inform their life cycle, and trick animals into behaving to their benefit, to name just a few remarkable talents. The Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency, consciousness, and intelligence. In looking closely, we see that plants, rather than imitate human intelligence, have perhaps formed a parallel system. What is intelligent life if not a vine that grows leaves to blend into the shrub on which it climbs, a flower that shapes its bloom to fit exactly the beak of its pollinator, a pea seedling that can hear water flowing and make its way toward it? Zoë Schlanger takes us across the globe, digging into her own memories and into the soil with the scientists who have spent their waking days studying these amazing entities up close. What can we learn about life on Earth from the living things that thrive, adapt, consume, and accommodate simultaneously? More important, what do we owe these life forms once we come to understand their rich and varied abilities? Examining the latest epiphanies in botanical research, Schlanger spotlights the intellectual struggles among the researchers conceiving a wholly new view of their subject, offering a glimpse of a field in turmoil as plant scientists debate the tenets of ongoing discoveries and how they influence our understanding of what a plant is. We need plants to survive. But what do they need us for—if at all? An eye-opening and informative look at the ecosystem we live in, this book challenges us to rethink the role of plants—and our own place—in the natural world.

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is the kind of book you don't see coming. Reeled in by the love of plants, I took in every word just to realize that I was heading into the mind of a passionate woman scientist reminding me of Elizabeth Zott from Lessons in Chemistry. Needless to say, I was stuck, every word so methodically chosen for its right purpose that there was no way forth but onward. In Lab Girl, plant facts and life anecdotes are weaved together into the memoir of Hope Jahren, an American geochemist, geobiologist, and professor. "I had learned to keep my distance from these types of colleagues, knowing that they would never accept me as having a legitimate intellectual claim to the site, even if our funding agency did. In their eyes, I was just a grubby little girl who couldn't lift forty pounds with a weirdo in tow, and I embraced this role, hoping it would result in their underestimating me to the point of leaving me alone." Part feminist memoir and part nature Lab Girl is surprising and inspiring. Title: Lab Girl Author: Hope Jahren @realhopejahren Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House @aaknopf @penguinrandomhouse Thank you @emlynnmcdermott for recommending Lab Girl. How are you with houseplants? Honestly, if anyone needs this book it’s me! I am incapable of keeping houseplants alive. This book, with its bright and engaging illustrative detail, will give young (and old(er)), readers the knowledge, tips and tricks needed to confidently take care of houseplants. Separated into three sections: 🪴 All About Houseplants 🪴 The World of Houseplants 🪴 Houseplant Care It takes you through the history and survival strategies of plants. The differences between the plant families, where their names derive from, their habitats and uses. Finally, how to look out for signs of illness, damage and pests and keep them healthy. Interspersed throughout are DIY projects with things to make such as a plant pot hanger, prehistoric bottle garden and even how to create clones of your own houseplant collection. It’s super fun and engaging and perfect for any green fingered young reader. 📖 A Jungle in Your Living Room 🖊️ Michael Holland @pond_dipper 🎨 Philip Giordano @pilipo_ 📚 @flyingeyebooks [AD:PR Product] #ajungleinyourlivingroom #flyingeyebooks #booksabouthouseplants #booksaboutplants #nonfictionforkids #NonFictionNovember #kidsbooksaboutplants #RaisingReaders #RaisingBookworms #kidsnonfiction

🍁BOTANICAL BEAUTIES🍁 Yesterday I was driving through the forest where we live and the views were simply breathtaking. Picture the scene, the Suns just about to dip below the horizon, flooding the landscape with a rich golden glow, the Beech trees are besplendid with the full extent of their Autumn colours, it really was a sight to experience. If only I could have got out of the car! And that is the inspiration behind today's post, a selection of childrens books on plants that have beautiful illustrations. Enjoy! 🍁The Secret World of Plants ✏Ben Hoare 🎨Kaley McKean A closer look at the Kingdom of plants, full of fascination and stunning detail. This one perfectly marries together photography and illustration. 🍁What's Inside A Flower? ✏🎨Rachel Ignotofsky Rachel Ignotofsky's illustration style is one of my favourites! This nonfiction picture book explores plants, the science and their natural beauty! 🍁The Green Planet ✏Leisa Stewart-Sharpe 🎨Kim Smith The greens in this are just stunning, so varied and luscious! I adore this whole series, based on various BBC Natural History series, this one focuses on the world of Plants. 🍁Around the World in 80 Trees ✏Ben Lerwill 🎨Kaja Kajfez Another series I adore, stay tuned for a look at the latest addition tonight. Back to the trees though, this introduces the reader to a variety of tree species and also had pages dedicated to their biology and anatomy. 🍁Grow ✏Riz Reyes 🎨Sara Boccaccini Meadows Can we just agree that this cover is incredible? The beauty continues throughout with a look at 15 plants (and a bonus fungi!), including tips to help children develop their own gardening skills. 🍁A Seed is Sleepy 🎨Dianna Hutts Aston ✏Sylvia Long A detailed picture book focusing in on the diversity in seeds and the central role they play in the story of plants. These books would all make brilliant inclusions into a nature study into plants of great gifts for plant lovers in your life! . . . Written by dear friend and tree/ insect- lover @katiebagli , this book introduces children to some common Indian trees, through interesting stories and trivia. Both Katie and I went to the same school, many years apart. Both of us studied field botany at BNHS with our wonderful botanist-teacher @swapna.prabhu , in the same batch many years ago. And both of us ended up writing a book of stories about trees in India. 😀 #booksaboutplants #bookrecommendations #shreebooks #katiebagli #booksaboutnature #booksabouttrees #kidlit #ChildrensBooks

#botanical #bookstagram #naturebooks #booksaboutplants #edituraherald #nonfictionbooks #lovingtheearth #cititoare #readerlife #mountain #cheiaprahova

"Plants produce poisons to protect themselves, sometimes at levels toxic enough to kill. Through trial and error, our forebears established which plants were edible and which caused harm. They then avoided the harmful species or in some cases also knowingly used them as weapons to kill rivals, criminals and animals, or as drugs to evoke hallucinations or subject victims to trial by ordeal" 🌱 Día 13 del Barrifest del Terror: "Plants that Kill: A Natural History of the World's Most Poisonous Plants" de Elizabeth A. Ever wondered why banana peels are more slippery than other peels? Why is 'slipping on a banana peel' a common idiom in so many languages, a common scene in slapstick comedy? Imponderable but fascinating questions like these take you down rabbit holes of discovery in Planting our World by #stefanomancuso Stefano Mancuso has become one of my favourite authors of late, and this is one of many reasons why. “Plants are living, breathing beings that when acknowledged and brought more intentionally into our lives, can be monumentally rewarding” - Summer Rayne Oaks I’m reading #Howtomakeaplantloveyou and that quote hit my soul strings! This snow/marble queen pothos started out as a cutting from the mama plant in Nov ‘22 (swipe til the end). When she had grown enough roots, I gave her a moss pole in April and she just took off! Every single leaf has increased in size, and in the last month, a new leaf is emerging before that last leaf has even finished unfurling and hardening! Do you have a snow/marble queen pothos in your collection? Is it hanging or climbing? #rootsofmysoil #epipremnumaureumsnowqueen #snowqueenpothos #clearmosspoles #chunkysoilmix #plantlover #variegatedplants #letsgrowtogether #plantupdate #epiphyte #plantsthatclimb #matureleaves #happlyplanting #plantmama #jazzysjungle #booksaboutplants #alwaysgrowing

Where the Wildflowers Grow by Leif Bersweden ⭐ 5/5 ⭐ Audiobook narrated by the author. A charming, detailed and insightful adventure showing off the botanical delights of Britain and Ireland. The author spends a year cycling the land, getting to know the diverse range of plants and habitats these countries have to offer. - The structure of the book as an ongoing journey was excellent. Each chapter focuses on a particular place and plant or habitat and it creates a good flow that keeps the reader interested but not overwhelmed. - Conservation features heavily in this book. There was barely a chapter that went by without mention of degraded or disappearing habitats, climate change, shrinking populations and changes to biodiversity. And that is how it should be. Organisms do not exist in isolation and especially now humans need to act and realise how much harm we are doing to our planet. Everything deserves a chance and a place to exist, even if it doesn't benefit us as a species (though usually nature does). - Bersweden's enthusiasm for wildflowers and botany is infectious and you can't help but get excited with him. As I listened to the audiobook, I had no picture references (though there are resources on the book's website) and despite having to try and visualise these plants entirely in my head, I loved hearing about these dinky little flowers or slimy seaweeds or bits of moss. I've also noticed that when I'm out and about, I'm more aware of the plant life around me and want to find out exactly what something is. Perfect for nature lovers or those who enjoy nonfiction with a flow. Highly recommended.

Summer is ending 😢 I'm also moving, which means I won't get to enjoy the local park and library I've spent a lot of time reading at. But here's to discovering new spots in a new city! 🌱The Weeds by Katy Simpson Smith 4.25/5⭐. This is dual POV litfic (historical/contemporary) with a meditative tone simmering with women's rage. I definitely enjoyed the historical POV more, and I can't deny that it's got benign white feminism(tm) energy. Overall I thought it was compelling and interesting, would recommend if it fits your interests. 📖 "Two women, connected across time, edge toward transgression in pursuit of their desires. A Mississippi woman pushes through the ruin of the Roman Colosseum, searching for plants. She has escaped her life, apprenticed herself to catalog all the species growing in this place. Crawling along the stones, she wonders how she has landed here, a reluctant botanist amid a snarl of tourists in comfortable sandals. She hunts for a scientific agenda and a direction of her own. In 1854, a woman pushes through the jungle of the Roman Colosseum, searching for plants. As punishment for her misbehavior, she has been indentured to the English botanist Richard Deakin, for whom she will compile a flora. If only the woman she loves weren’t on a boat, with a husband. But love isn’t always possible. She logs 420 species. Through a list of seemingly minor plants and their uses—medical, agricultural, culinary—these women calculate intangible threats: a changing climate, the cost of knowledge, and the ways repeated violence can upend women’s lives. They must forge their own small acts of defiance and slip through whatever cracks they find. How can anyone survive? Lush, intoxicating, and teeming with mischief, Katy Simpson Smith’s The Weeds is a tense, mesmerizing page-turner about science and survival, the roles women are given and have taken from them, and the lives they make for themselves." #whatglassersread #booksaboutplants #booksofinstagram

You've heard about the unjust salt tax and Gandhi's historic dandi march; but have you heard of the longest customs barrier of the world to impose salt tax? That barrier was fashioned by the British in India, out of trees and shrubs, thorns and spines; over 1000 km cutting across the heart of the subcontinent. Why a hedge? It's easier to make than building a wall, its spines prevent humans and animals from crossing, and it grows and expands on its own! An ingenious idea, wasn't it? This book, a quest and travelogue, tells the story of that lost and forgotten symbol of colonial power and authority. I talked about this in my lecture on how plants shaped Indian History with @instucen. #greathedges #greathedgeofindia #plantsofinstagram #thorn #treestreestrees #treesofindia #treetalkwithmallikaravikumar #treesofinstagram #treestagram #roymoxham #booksaboutplants #indianhistory #booksaboutindia #historybuff

Book Review The Lost Rainforests of Britain, by Guy Shrubsole ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ There are temperate rainforests in the UK! A temperate rainforest is a high oceanic climate that has high rainfall and humidity, with a low variation in temperature. It's home to so many species of lichen and plants you won't find elsewhere! The Lost Rainforests of Britain details the authors journey in learning about the rainforests we have and the plants that live in them - history, ecology, and locations. It's beautifully written, and incredibly interesting. It's also made me want to travel to all these places - I've been to one in Wales but would love to see more 😊. I particularly enjoyed the chapter talking about The Mabinogion and rainforests, as Celtic mythology is something I'd love to read more about! 🍁🍁🍁 #thelostrainforestsofbritain #temperaterainforest #bookstagramuk #booksoutside #booksinnature #booksinyorkshire #bookstagrammer #nonfiction #nonfictionbookstagram #nonfictionbooks #naturebooks #booksaboutplants

Having grown up amidst banyans and peepals, mangoes and neems, coconuts and tamarinds; the world of pines and junipers, alders and elders, maples and lindens were all quite alien to me. But as I stepped out of my landscape into the world beyond, this book by Diana Wells helped me get familiar with trees I had not known. Now when I travel in Europe, I don't feel so much of a stranger. I know the tree names, am getting familiar with their stories, and am slowly making new friends. :) #treestreestrees #treesofeurope #treetalkwithmallikaravikumar #booksaboutplants #booksabouttrees #dianawells #temperatetrees #books

Are you a 4th grade teacher teaching about the role of external structures of plants this fall? (NGSS 4-LS1-1) 🌱 Fall is a great time to investigate how plants use their external structures for survival and reproduction. Consider reading picture books during your plant unit to help your students get in tune with the many external parts that help plants such as flowers and seeds. 📚 🥥 Read “Flip, Float, Fly: Seeds on the Move” by JoAnn Early Macken to introduce seeds as external structures that help with plant growth and reproduction. Seed dispersal techniques covered in the story include wind, ice, water, propulsion, animal droppings, animal caching, hitchhiking, and people planting seeds intentionally. 🌸 Read “The Reason for a Flower” by Ruth Heller to introduce flowers as external structures that help with plant reproduction. The author explains that the flower’s job is to make seeds that travel to new places to grow more plants. She also introduces how these external structures attract pollinators to help make seeds. 🍄 Read “Mushroom Rain” by Laura K. Zimmerman for a fun fall look at external structures. Although mushrooms are not plants, they are the spore-bearing external structure of fungi that help them spread to new locations. Fall is a wonderful time to investigate mushrooms and this book introduces the concept at a child-appropriate level. Take advantage of what’s happening in nature this fall to spark your students’ curiosity and give them a place-based learning opportunity that helps you fulfill your curricular goals. Comment with your favorite book to teach about external structures and inspire others to integrate ELA with science! #sciencelit #picturebooksforfall #booksaboutmushrooms #booksaboutplants #elascienceintegration #teachstudentsoutside #natureintheclassroom #naturallyteaching

Discovered this lovely tree guide on a trip to the south last year. Trees are arranged by leaf type, and you also have a colour code to go with it. For many beginners, flowers - their shape and colour - are key striking features that help in identifying a tree; so to have that alongside leaf shape is most useful. If you are in South India and interested in starting off with tree spotting, check this out! #treesofindia #treesofsouthindia #treetalkwithmallikaravikumar #treestreestrees #treesofinstagram #treestagram #treestuff #learnabouttrees #identifyingtrees #booksaboutplants #booksabouttrees #booksaboutnature #bookrecommendations #botany #indianwildlife

This was my very first tree book, and although I know it's not the best, it will be special because it was my first introduction to these magical brings around me. To be honest, it is old school - the pictures are not great, the close -ups are hazy or missing, and the text is chunky and not well organised. After seeing other tree guides like #treesofdelhi by Pradip Krishen, you may no longer like to return to this. But if you are starting out with tree-spotting in Mumbai, this book lists out places in the city where you can spot the concerned tree and that is useful to an absolute beginner. #treesofmumbai #treestagram #treetalkwithmallikaravikumar #booksaboutplants #mumbai #booksaboutmumbai

📚The Milkweed Lands 🖌️Eric Lee-Mäder Pub Date: Sep 26, 2023 Storey Publishing 🌸🌸🌸🌸 4/5 This book was a gentle exploration into the world of milkweed plants and the ecosystems where they are often sustained. It was written in such a way that the content was intelligent but accessible. It mixed facts with anecdotes so that the story of this plant was more than just bullet points. It’s the story of how life around it behaves through each of the seasons. Just as the milkweed relies on its ecosystem, so too there is life relying on the milkweed. The whole result was an engaging and yet informative discussion of the incredible history of this little-revered plant. In addition, it was illustrated so beautifully! Every section that began to overflow with names of various species had an inevitable page of illustration to help. Providing references like these helped make those sections engaging and easier to visualize. The art was so pleasantly beautiful, and it added so much to the book.

Across 7 double page spreads it looks at the various ways they react to changing environments, how they protect themselves from gluttonous creatures and send messages through their roots. ~ THE LANGUAGE OF PLANTS | Darya Beklemesheva | Helena Haraštová Discover the science behind plant communication throughout this more detailed book (longer at 35pgs and more text heavy). Each chapter here focuses on questions such as, do plants have a functioning memory? Can a plant kill an antelope? (Yes, is the answer!) And, how does a plant find a pollinator.
