I'm starting a new book-heavy content account which is something new for me and a little bit scary but I thought there was no better way than to start it with a book stack of all the books I hauled last week. Plus, the weather is beautiful which makes for an amazing backdrop! A new bookstore opened near be recently and my cousin and I had to check it out! I picked up four books rather than the limit of two I had set for myself because I have no self control. Here's what I picked up and why: Sherlock Holmes & Count Dracula by Christian Klaver I love the Sherlock Holmes and classic "monster" novels so much and this mashup sounded really fun! This was a total impulse buy. Chaos & Flame by Tessa Gratton & Justina Ireland Honestly, I was totally sucked in by the cover art. I love anything with dragons. Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White by Amelie Wen Zhao This book recently launched and is the second in a duology that I already have the first book for. I know I'll want to read this as soon as I finish the first book. Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys My cousin was picking up another book by this author which inspired me to pick this one up. I love a good historical fiction. And then . . . even though I had already picked up more books than I can read this month, I picked up Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland. I was perusing the book section at Costco and couldn't not pick up this beautiful book. I almost picked this as my @bookofthemonth selection but went with something else. I finished Magnolia Parks and Daisy Haites by Jessa Hastings. I've thought about Magnolia Parks for a while, and it is a 3⭐️ Daisy Haites was a better book 3.5⭐️ I thought I was going to love the series (there are 5 books so far in the series) because everyone was raving about how amazing it is. I guess it is not my thing, and I don't think I will continue the series (even though I bought all the physical copies). Anyway, I am now reading a reread between Shades of Gray by @rutasepetysauthor. I know I loved this book. I read it a long time ago, and I was trying to find it for a very long time to reread it, and I finally found it! I started it yesterday, and I am 12% through. Lina was startled by the soviets banging on their door right before bed. They have 20 minutes to get out of their house. They have to rush and get as much stuff as they can before their time is up. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Historical Fiction ✨ A knock in the middle of the night changes Lina and her family's life forever. The Soviet secret Police haul them away and put them into cattle cars and transport them to Siberia to be put into labor camps. Lina with her mother and young brother must work every hour to survive. This is a story of survival and hope in the darkest of places. ✨ This book was beautifully written and full of grace. This story is heartbreaking. This is a time in history not many talk about. This was during WWII and during the same time as Hitler's evil reign. Stalin was trying to take over countries himself and did evil things. This story is so important, for this is a lost piece of history, like the Holocaust many don't believe it happened. Sin contar que hubo más y por muchos años en todo el mundo, como control político y mano de obra gratis. Entre ellos están los famosos Gulags, campos de los soviéticos que duraron por 30 años durante el gobierno de Stalin. Quizás esta novela sea una más de la II Guerra mundial y las vejaciones que pasaron personas injustamente. Pero para mí, poco conocedora de estos Gulags, resulto una sorpresa, en historia e investigación relatada por la perspectiva de una adolescente que sobrevivió para contarlo y gritarlo al mundo con sus dibujos. A través de Lina, una chica lituana, seguimos su viaje de subsistencia, junto a su madre y hermano. Al ser deportados a esos campos de trabajo. Viviendo experiencias traumáticas e indecibles, manteniendo su fortaleza para hacer llegar primero a su padre y luego al mundo sus dibujos, contando su vida diaria en esas condiciones. Vivimos también con ella sus recuerdos como fragmentos de la vida que había tenido, acomodada con expectativas grandes de formarse como artista. Mientras su realidad le quema como el frio que soporta cada día en su último y más largo trayecto, Siberia. A pesar de la situación infernal, es sorprendente la capacidad humana de formar lazos, compañerismo y amor. He disfrutado mucho las relaciones que tienen con los otros presos y su intensa preocupación para cuidar unos de otros en sus posibilidades. Sin duda un libro con mira sencilla por la narradora, quizás un poco limitada porque en todo su trayecto poco puede saber que pasa, y el porqué les hacen lo que les hacen. Pero entendiendo el contexto brindando en el libro por mapas y descripción de la autora, encaja todo. It was incredible. When it first began, it gave off a childish vibe that felt similar to Lois Lowry’s book Number the Stars, but quickly became something much darker, and honestly shocking. How I’ve gone 31 years without hearing or learning about the atrocities Stalin put these people through during WWII is not only appalling, but heartbreaking. I also love the fact that in the audiobook, Ruta goes on to explain a brief history of the people in Lithuania during the war, but also shared part of her family history that inspired this book. For me it took a minute to really pick up, but once it did I was consumed by it. V šedých tónech 5/5⭐ @rutasepetysauthor Děj knihy se odehrává v Litvě roku 1941.Tajná sovětská policie NKVD vtrhne do domu matky Jeleny, dcery Liny a jejího mladšího bratra Jonase mají pouhých 10 minut na to, aby si sbalili nejdůležitější věci. Patnáctiletá Lina, vášnivá kreslířka, si balí oblečení, skicák a tužky, s nadějí, že si bude moci kreslit a dokumentovat svůj příběh. Neví ale, co je čeká za dveřmi. Lina ani Jonas netuší, proč je zatkli a co se stalo s jejich otcem. Nákladní auto je odveze na vlakové nádraží, kde jsou spolu s dalšími slušnými a vzdělanými lidmi zavřeni do dobytčích vagónů. Cesta vlakem do jižního Ruska na Altaj trvá 42 dní pouze s minimálním přídělem kaše a vody. Mají jednu zastávku denně kde jsou vyhozeny mrtvoly. Po strastiplné cestě vlakem se konečně nadechnou čerstvého vzduchu pracovního tábora, kde je čeká dvanáctihodinová dřina. Jídlo jim sotva stačí na přežití a slouží zároveň jako nájem za malou místnost s kamny u protivné ženy. Během cesty vlakem Lina kreslila vše, co viděla, s nadějí, že jejich otec najde stopy a pomůže jim. Vyšetřovatelé se snaží zlomit morálku vězňů tím, že je zbavují spánku, vyslýchají je a nutí je podepsat falešná přiznání, která je zavazují k nuceným pracím. Mnoho vězňů tomuto tlaku podlehne, ať už z vyčerpání, nebo z pocitu beznaděje. Lina se sblíží s Andriusem, chlapcem, který má v táboře vyšší postavení, a to jim umožňuje zlepšit životní podmínky celé rodiny. V táboře se šíří kurděje, které nešetří ani Jonase, ale díky Andriusově pomoci přežívá. Matka a děti stráví v táboře deset strašných měsíců než je přesunou jinam. Lina svěřila všechny své kresby Andriusovi, který s nimi nejede. Cesta do gulagu je sice snesitelnější - mají více jídla a nemusí pracovat - ale trvá nesmírně dlouho a na konci cesty je čeká další hrůza. Po příjezdu zjistí, že se ocitli na prázdné rozlehlé pláni, kde musí postavit domovy pro strážné a pro sebe zhotovit provizorní jurty z bláta, klacků a kamenů. Nejhorší jsou sněžné bouře, kdy přežívají bez jídla, a polární noc, která tu trvá půl roku. Podaří se jim přežít v těchto nelidských podmínkách? Shledá se opět celá rodina? The Books that Started it All Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is another book I read in my high school book club. At the time, I didn’t read historical fiction, so I wasn’t thrilled with the choice, but I gave it a shot and became a huge fan of the genre and Sepetys. I got the chance to meet Sepetys last year, and she is such an outstanding person. Her historical fiction books were one of my inspirations for becoming an editor and hearing her speak about writing last year reaffirmed that enthusiasm. I hope to be as passionate about my work as she is about hers for a long time to come! There is something about storytelling that is indescribable, and when you meet someone who understands that feeling, you don’t forget it. Every time I read a book by this author I'm introduced to a side of history I knew little about. In her book Salt to the Sea I learned about a devastating attack on a ship where only 1,000 out of 10,000+ survived, and in I Must Betray You I learned about communist Romania and how easily the citizens turn on their neighbors and loved ones. In this book we are taken back to WWII and are told/shown the evil of Stalin and his relocation/deportation of Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians to Siberian work camps. These Baltic states lost more than a third of their population during the Soviet invasion. Stalin is estimated to have killed somewhere around 10 million people. The work camps were frigid, with barely any shelter provided. The workers did backbreaking work all day every day for scraps of bread. Men, women, children, and the elderly, none were spared. This story is bleak and horrific. My heart breaks for the suffering of so many innocent people. As always I find the characters in these stories have unbelievable strength, resilience and largest of all HOPE. Hope that even in the bleakest moments they will make it to see another day. It is so important that stories like this are told so we can remember and not let history repeat itself! I also want to add that the mother is my favorite character. She is kind and gentle even in the proximity of pure hatred and evil. She never gives up and continuously fights to stay alive for her children. A true pillar of love and hope.

Má jedinečný štýl písania, ktorý sa na prvý pohľad môže zdať jednoduchý, no je o to silnejší a emotívnejší. Kniha Medzi odtieňmi sivej (V šedých tónech) rozpráva príbeh 15-ročnej Liny, ktorú spolu s jej matkou a mladším bratom Jonasom deportujú do pracovného tábora na Sibíri. Tam na nich okrem ponižovania, mukov, trápenia a chorôb číha aj krutá zima, odhaľujú sa skutočné charaktery ľudí, každý deň bojujú o každú omrvinku chleba, o prežitie. 📖 Book Review 📖 Between Shades of Gray Written by Ruta Sepetys Ruta Sepetys is so talented. I appreciate the research that goes in to bringing these characters and their stories to life. I always learn something when I read one of her books & Between Shades of Gray was no exception. This book was difficult to read because of the content, but impossible for me to put down. I was invested in Lina and her family from the start. However, the ending felt very abrupt. I honestly had to check to see if I was missing pages. V šedých tónech ❄️ Deportace rodin sovětskou armádou do pracovních táborů. Jednoho večera vrazí sovětská tajná polici do bytu patnáctileté Liny a její rodiny. Policie odvleče Linu, jejího bratra a matku pryč, aby je deportovali do pracovního tábora na Sibiři. Díky své rodině, lásce k malování a víře v setkání se znovu se svým otcem, má Lina sílu a odhodlání nenechat se zlomit ustavičným hladem, bitím, ponižováním a těžkou prací. Lina veškeré své zážitky zaznamenává formou kreseb, které se snaží dostat ke svému otci a později aby uchovala vzpomínky pro příští generaci a aby se nezapomnělo na to, co se dělo tisícům nevinných lidí. V příběhu se prolíná nenávist s láskou, krutost s něžností a beznaděj s nadějí. V šedých tónech byla skvělá kniha. Díky svému rychle ubíhajícímu a poutavému ději ubíhá příběh opravdu rychle. Navíc jsou kapitoly tvořeny pouze z pár stránek (cca 3-5 stran). Doporučuji všem, kteří se chtějí dozvědět něco o historii okupované Litvy. Zároveň bych knihu doporučila těm, kteří čtou příběhy z pracovních či koncentračních táborů. Vzhledem k tomu, že už mám načteno spoustu knih právě z koncentračních/pracovních táborů, doporučuji také čtenářům, kteří by si něco z tohoto prostředí chtěli přečíst, ale bojí se toho. V této knize je toto téma popsáno, řekněme že decentně. Nemyslím tím nic špatného, je jde zmíněno násilí, šikana,… (a je strašné, že se něco takového dělo), ale četla jsem příběhy, kde se děly i jiné věci a byly také více rozepsány. U knihy jsem si opět poplakala. Je to třetí kniha od autorky která se mi dostala do ruky. Könyvek, amik az ízlésemet tükrözik az olvasások terén 📚 Van tipped, hogy melyik könyv mit szimbolizálhat? Ebben a bejegyzésben egy kicsit az elmúlt időszakot érintő változásokról szerettem volna beszélni. Biztos észrevettétek már, hogy a korábbiakhoz képest a bejegyzések gyakorisága igen csak rendszertelen lett, ennek pedig a legfőbb okai a motiváció és a lelkesedés hiánya. Tudjátok, én olyan ember vagyok, aki meg van őrülve a számokért, és szeretem, ha látom, hogy megtérül az az energia, amit egy-egy tevékenységbe belefektetek. Na már most az Instagram ehhez azt hiszem nem a legjobb felület, hiába próbáltam meg mindent, amit az organikus növekedés kapcsán tanácsként kaptam, semmi sem működött. Szinte már kényszeresen akartam tartani a ritmust, amit magamnak állítottam fel, mígnem egy hétvégén, mikor elutaztam, előre elkészített képek, vagy bejegyzések nélkül, rájöttem, hogy igazából gyűlölöm azt, hogy meg kell feszülnöm azért, hogy kitaláljam miről írjak, hogy tartani tudjam a minden másnapi posztolást. Sőt a legtöbb esetben már képet se volt kedvem készíteni. Ez vezetett oda, hogy mindenféle rendszer kidobtam az ablakon, és azóta csak akkor posztolok, ha tényleg szeretnék, nem feszülök rá arra, hogy most miről írjak, ha nincs miről, akkor nem posztolok, ha van miről, akkor pedig akár egymást követő napokon is. Az, hogy ezt végre be tudtam látni, olyan volt, mint egy nagy lélegzetvétel. 🥀Printre tonuri cenușii- recenzie Am citit cartea aceasta pe undeva prin noiembrie și vreau să vă zic că mi-a rămas o bună perioada de timp întipărită în memorie pentru a fost una din acele cărți care chiar m-a impresionat și care chiar mi-a transmis un val de emoții. Am mai citit de la autoare acun doi ani "Sfârșitul șoaptelor" și știam că o să îmi placă și "Printre tonuri cenișii" pentru că femeia chiar le are cu scrisul ficțiunii istorice într-un mare fel. Acțiunea se întâmplă în Lituania anului 1941, în timpul celui de Al Doilea Război Mondial, iar nouă ne este prezentata soarta Linei, o adolescenta de 15 ani, care este luata, intr-o seară, împreună cu mama și fratele ei din casa de către NKVD și aruncată într-un tren cu oameni nevinovați care urmează sa fie deportați în Siberia pentru a lucra ca sclavi. Lina încearcă în tot acest timp să ia legătura cu tatăl său prin diferite mijloace iscusite pentru a-și reuni familia. Mi-a plăcut extrem de mult tăria Linei pe tot parcursul romanului. De la capitol la capitol, se simțea cum aceasta devine tot mai matură din pricina experiențelor tragice prin care trece. La final am rămas cu ceva lacrimi în ochi, dar mai ales cu sentimentul acela că am terminat o carte bună care mi-a transmis fix ce trebuia să îmi transmită. I don't usually read WWII fiction, but I was curious about this book after seeing the high praise. I was lucky enough to snag a free copy from a Little Free Library. . I'm old enough to remember life with the Soviet Union and life after. I remember the newspaper headlines when the Berlin Wall came down. That's the extent of my knowledge of events aside from the typical stories from Germany and Poland. . To learn of the horrifying plight of the citizens of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland was eye-opening. . To learn from the author's notes that the people of these countries, after being allowed to return to their homes and live out their lives under Soviet rule, weren't allowed to tell the stories of Soviet brutality under threat of being returned to the work camps, makes me wonder what else we still don't know about the events of this time period. It also puts into perspective just how important the current plight of Ukraine is for the stability of that part of the world. . I'm really glad I gave this book a chance. It will stay with me for a long time.

Between shades of gray - a hidden sight of WWII. _________ Ruta Sepetys's melancholic and profound book "Between Shades of Gray" delves into the lesser-known facets of World War II, with a particular emphasis on the Soviet occupation of Lithuania and its catastrophic effects on common people's lives. The protagonist Lina Vilkas, 15, is the vehicle through which Sepetys graphically depicts the horrors of forced labor, displacement, and the struggle for survival in the face of unspeakable cruelty. Readers are drawn into Lina's journey as she and her family are taken from their home and sent to Siberian labor camps by Sepetys' lyrical and heartbreaking prose. Themes of family ties, human spirit resiliency in the face of adversity, and resilience are deftly woven together by the author. The romance between Lina and Andrius was the aspect of this book that I enjoyed the best. Their narrative had a very endearing and natural connection. But the finale was the primary reason I didn't give it a rating of four or five stars. I'm not sure why, but the story's ending left me feeling a little irritated. I wanted to know more, and I knew it would have been better if the author had gone into further detail about Lina's feelings in the final scene. ___________

Ruta stared into my soul. ⠀ It's officially been a week since I met Ruta Sepetys and I still cannot get over how lovely she was. Thank you so much to @_fullybooked for hosting such an introspective event—we need more. ⠀ I learned a lot about her writing process, her incredible history with different forms of art, and her upcoming novel, which may or may not be one of the reasons why she visited the Philippines. Learned a few fun facts about brains & their knots too. I wasn't able to film everything (let's say she was too busy living in the moment) but their rendition of Moon River was heartwarming. The candles made the experience 100x better too! In conclusion: I will always associate hearing @manilaphilharmonic live with meeting Ruta and staring into her thoughtful eyes and I think it's almost poetic 🤍 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Between Shades of Gray is third on my Ruta Sepetys dive. This was another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ title! This title tells the story of a 15-year-old Lithuanian teenager named Lina. In 1941, Lina, her family, and many of her neighbors are ripped from their homes by Soviet officers and sent to Siberian work camps. They're starved, beaten, sick, frozen, and being worked to death. It's a gruesome story of Stalin's horrific reign of terror, one many of us know little about. I appreciate that #rutasepetys focuses on telling stories based on lesser-known history. #betweenshadesofgray was written before Sepetys' title #salttothesea, and I love that there is a character connection between the main characters of these books. Met one of my favorite authors last Saturday! 🥰 I've been a fan of @rutasepetysauthor since 2015. 🙋🏻♀️ I've read her 5 fiction books and I love them all! I was not a fan, nor was I really interested with 'historical fiction' until I came across her books Between Shades of Gray and Out of the Easy 9 years ago. It was so different from the other books I've read under the same genre (mostly required reading from school/uni or more on romance); her stories were actually exciting! As she said, 'short chapters, changing PoVs, hooked by the first sentence' -- all my cup of tea. 😆 Looking forward (and very much excited 😉) to the next slice of history Ruta Sepetys will share to the world. "Between Shades of Gray" was turned into the 2018 film "Ashes in the Snow." Let me repeat that, for greater emphasis on what a feat this is. A debut novel got turned into a film a mere seven years after publication. Perhaps winning all those awards had something to do with it. When stories sing as they pour out of an author's pen (no matter that it's their first), they will echo with a strength borne of fire and blood, and never run out of new audiences as its readers excitedly press this book in the hands of their book club friends. Yes, it is a war story, but the darkness of the hatred only serves to underscore the purity of the light of love. A mother sacrifices all her food to keep her starving children alive. A trapped father desperately hands over his clothes and wedding ring to his children through a hole in a train, a selfless provider to the very end. These and many more fill the pages documenting the true story of the Lithuanian exodus, an entire people marked "unwanted" and deported to the Gulags of Siberia. While Ruta Sepetys situates her historical novels in dark times, they never become overwhelmingly bitter. They are always inspirational and deeply moving. And so, oddly enough, this would make for a wonderful Valentine's Day read. For there is nothing like tragedy and loss to remind one of how precious each single day with a loved one is. For all whom we love. For all the beloved who have gone before. #tbr24in24 book 2 I just finished this one last night around midnight and I am still suffering from a book hangover. Sepetys has done it again. Heart wrenching and totally absorbing. This one wrecked me as much as Salt to the Sea. She has such a way of bringing history to life. This one reads like a thriller-- in a country where 1 out of 10 people are informers to the Securitate - it's hard to know who to trust. You will find yourself rooting for Cristian, Liliana, and Luca and wondering what you would have done in their shoes. What are you reading this weekend? I'm reading Two Twisted Crowns! 🖤 Between Shades of Gray was a really good book. It focused on a part of WWII that you don't typically hear about - Russian labor camps. This book follows a Lithuanian family as they're torn from their home and taken to places unknown and their portrays their will for survival. It was difficult and sad and the ending was very abrupt. January Book Review ✨ January was Emily’s month to pick a book for us and her choice was Between Shades of Gray by @rutasepetysauthor ! This is a historical fiction book about what happened to the people in the surrounding countries of Russia during Stalin’s dictatorship. The story is about Lina, a girl from Lithuania, and her family as they are displaced and moved to work camps by the NKVD. This book was extremely sad and despairing. It was especially hard to process as this is something that is still occurring in our world today. We liked this book because it highlighted a time in history that some of us did not know very much about. It was extremely educational and eye opening and made us all want to learn more about this part of WWII. We all thought Lina’s mom was the best character and admired her bravery and resilience. We discussed questions of if we would be as brave or kind as she was to those around her. We also discussed that, if we were in their situation, would we have signed the papers. So many amazing discussion topics came out of this book which makes for such an incredible book club! The ending of the book left us with some questions and we do wish that it had a bit more of an explanation. Obviously, it is hard for us to say we enjoyed this book, due to the tragic nature of the story, but we all thought it was important and overall a good read. With that being said, we did rate this book 4 stars. If you’ve read Between Shades do Gray, let us know what your thoughts were!

I wanted to try another ‘winter vibes’ post before I go full-tilt into Valentine’s-inspired aesthetic and I am bummed that I still (and at this point most likely won’t) get snow again this year. Peribulbar Book Club 📖 This month it was my turn to pick our work book club, and I chose Between Shades of Gray by @rutasepetysauthor. I have read all her other books and loved them. Everyone enjoyed the book and we had a great discussion this afternoon. Swipe to see my book club friends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This book had my attention from the beginning. This devastating story of a young Lithuanian girl who is torn from her home with her mother and littler brother, separated from her father and forced into a work camp in unimaginable living conditions. Lina continues to have hope and keeps drawing, hoping to get word to her father and let people know what is happening to them. In all the heartbreaking/despicable treatment of humans by Stalin's soldiers, we see the strength and kindness in others that keep them going. This was a part of history I didn't know much about and I'm happy I read this book. I'm using this as my entry into @books_by_bethany and @mamas_top_shelf #SeasonalCoversChallenge for January's prompt to read a book with snow on the cover. It is 10 degrees here in Kansas and it was nice to escape in @cafeequinox today in their warm and toasty greenhouse! Time for a kid review on a book. I read this book several years ago and Ruta Sepetys quickly become a favourite author of mine. When she posted about a graphic novel version of Between Shades of Gray being made, I knew I needed to get it for my daughter. She is 10 years old but an advanced reader. Best suited for late tweens to teens CW: child death, imprisonment, violence. “This book was good but sad. Lots of people suffered in the camp. I didn’t know about Lithuanians who were deported to Siberian labour camps before this book. Lina is able to tell her story through drawings and writing.
