The last thing we needed the week of our huge clinical exam? Learning that the existence of our program is on the line. Bastyr midwifery department’s history, curriculum, and faculty, are unparalleled. This school is known to create exceptional midwives who advocate for equity and progress in the field. It holds a unique and essential place in the midwifery world. While learning about this potential closure sent me into a panic, it’s also given my class the opportunity to share about our experiences of feeling supported, and underscored our awareness of what an amazing education we’ve had and our love for the faculty. Every program has its flaws, but, as @ncquevedo said, you can’t improve something that doesn’t exist. This week I’ve seen that our midwifery department is worth fighting for. Together, my cohort authored a letter compelling the university president to keep this program running. And, thanks to @azalea_salter’s unshakeable tenacity, we all met with him last night and tell him about our personal backgrounds and experiences with the program. As we approach this intense weekend of hands-on testing, we hope and pray that the leadership of Bastyr will see the immense value of this program, with its passionate students, and continue to support it far into the future.
