đ A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi was absolutely beautiful & so, so, very touching. As a woman of color, the display of Shirinâs journey throughout high school and finding herself is so spot on. Although I am not muslim myself, I see, feel, recognize, and admire her strength during an era where she was hated and highly disrespected because of certain events. Not to mention, the romance shared between Shirin and Ocean was absolutely beautiful and really encapsulated the beauty of teen romance. Ocean didnât care what the repercussions were. He still craved her love even though he faced major criticism by others at school for dating Shirin. I absolutely loved their story and chemistry throughout the novel. Mafiâs writing in general is absolutely impeccable. Whether I am reading from the Shatter Me series or another novel by her, itâs never a dull moment. Mafiâs novels can always pull me out of a slump. There are times where this country has been in great turmoil, which can lead up to the collapse of race and the love of others. When COVID-19 erupted, racism towards my family and I had picked up and got more serious than ever. This novel and the theme of 9/11 is just one example of how events in the world can affect everyone, donât blame anyone. We are all hurting, but we have the power to make a change. âą âą âą âą âą âą #averylargeexpanseofsea #taherehmafi #shatterme #series #book #bookstagram #books #barnesandnobles #b&n #9/11 #racism #makeadifference #impact

đđđđđđ đđđđ đ đđ đđđđđđđđ đđđđ đđđđđđ đđđđđ /đ§đđ„⣠Yep- same tip, different book. I purchased đ đđđđ đđđđđ đđđđđđđ đđ đđđ at @cannonbeachbooks last month and when a library audiobook copy was available I moved it up my TBR. Plus- I was able to listen to it on a long drive with my pre-teen & teen in the car. (Authentic coming of age story of a Muslim American post 9/11. Phenomenal, powerful prose.) GENIUS MOVE: I love reading print and audio concurrently because I feel like Iâm maximizing my reading time. Plus- this strategy helps reduce the tendency to overthink what to read next. An unexpected bonus of having multiple formats is the ability to commit to one format over the other if need be. If Iâm finding the print version less engaging I can spend more time with the audio and vice versa. I started doing this in 2021 and Iâve been doing it ALOT this year. Have you tried this reading method yet?âŁ
đ Book Review I haven't read a YA novel in a long time, and A Very Large Expanse of Sea was the pallet cleanser I needed. This was a book that really forced you to change your perspective, and I loved that. The main character, Shirin, is a teenager in the post 9/11 world who is Muslim and wears a hijab. You just feel empathy for her and also her strength from the very start. I loved her relationship with her older brother and the incorporation of break dancing into this novel. However, the main character, Shirin, was a whirlwind of emotions. It was too much and unrealistic at some points. Like a lot of YA novels (and honestly, why I don't read them all that often), the love story was very surface level. âïž 3.75/5

I've never had a book impact me so viscerally until A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi. Following a teenage Muslim girl navigate life after the attacks of 9/11, watching Shirin battle against prejudice, racism and more was so tough. Because it felt like I was looking at a mirror. But even throughout the challenging parts of the book, I connected with it, through small things about loving Ramadan, wanting a friend in high school, little things about daily prayers. It left me stunned after reading and while I took a while to mentally recover, it is so necessary for us to read about these experiences to fully understand one another, or at least attempt to ⥠#averylargeexpanseofsea #taherehmafi #yabookstagram #muslimauthors #muslimbooks #emotionalbooks #booksta

đđđđđ5 moons!!! âI could no longer distinguish people from monsters. I looked out at the world around me and no longer saw nuance. I saw nothing but the potential for pain and the subsequent need to protect myself, constantly.â this book UTTERLY DESTROYED ME AND RIPPED MY HEART OPEN. and itâs barely 310 pages long. this is a POWERHOUSE of a YA novel, and Mafi writes with such elegance and grace. i havenât been a teenager for a long time, but i connected instantly with Shirin, and our lives are so vastly different. from the very first sentence, i was struck by a story so fierce. this book had me weeping at my kitchen table, appalled at every injustice, and it just speaks volumes. letâs get into it. Shirin is Persian and wears a hijab, it is recently post 9/11. Shirin has grown up all over the USA, constantly moving. she is no stranger to being alone, isolated, and constantly dealing with verbal and physical violence. she moves to yet another small town in nowhere, patriotic, USA, where racists and bigots run rampant. sheâs 16, only a sophomore, constantly being stereotyped & never truly seen. then, she is paired as a lab partner with Ocean, a boy so genuine, curious (not fascinated, sheâs not a zoo animal) & who sees her. beyond her hard exterior, sees her passions & mind. and she sees him, is inexplicably drawn to him & tries not to let him in. but love never works that way. this story was electrifying, gut-wrenching, touching, funny & gave me hope. there is hope still, in kindness, in finding the nuance in things. there is hope in our capability as human beings to seek the things that connect us, keep open minds to that which we donât understand & show kindness when it is so obviously needed. we need to remember this more now than ever. everything Shirin & Ocean experienced just in this one book should never have to be someoneâs reality. it tears me apart. love at all costs. show kindness at every turn. people live horrible things, but making space for them just as they are does so much good. all that to say i absolutely LOVED this book. READ IT NOW! itâs unflinching, brutal, ugly & beautiful. (it also reads very quickly, the pace is excellent!)

this book!!! I am absolutely in love with Tahereh's writing. I read her Shatter Me series last year and was hooked, and this book was just as lyrical, emotional, and heartbreaking.
This is a YA contemporary romance set in 2002 about Shirin, a Muslim teenager navigating yet another high school filled with racism, daily microaggressions, prejudice, and sometimes violence in post-9/11 America. She meets Ocean, a boy from a seemingly complete different world, who is kind and brave and truly wants to know Shirin. Their friendship and subsequent love story are so beautiful, and the growth that Shirin shows throughout the story had me in tears.
This book delves into cultural identity and how people with different religions/cultures/appearances are often held responsible for educating others (white people) on why they deserve to be treated like humans. I think this is a great book to start with if you're looking to #diversifyyourreading . I loved this book and want everyone to read it.
Thank you, @tahereh, for putting this story in the world. đ©”

Day 453: A Very Large Expanse of Sea. This was our book club pick for March and my first Tahereh Mafi book. I own the entire Shatter Me series but have not read it. This is definitely not like Shatter Me, as itâs a standalone, âcontemporaryâ book. This book was published in 2018 but I felt a lot of the themes in this book that are extremely relevant today. Description: Shirin, 16 year old Muslim girl, is going to highschool in the wake of 9/11. Itâs 2002 and Shirinâs family has uprooted their lives once again. However, Shirin meets Ocean, and starts break dancing with her brother. Those two factors willl change Shirinâs life forever, but will it also change how the entire school views her? I thought his was a fast paced read, entrancing, and I did get emotional at some points in the book. Overall, I think itâs my favorite book club pick or at least tied with The Hanging City. This is a challenge originally started by @booksandlala that used to be a weeklong Readathon, but has since evolved. Now thereâs a word or set of words each month; the goal is to find a book with those words in the title and read them. Some people designate a week during the month to do this, some people read their pick any time during the month. Some people pick one book, and others pick multiple books. Iâm not sure if Iâll participate every month in 2024 because Iâm prioritizing my physical TBR, so if I donât have a book sitting on my shelf or kindle already that fits, I probably wonât participate. Book 4 completed for the Ramadan Readathon hosted by @muslimreadathon ! A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi For a long while, I have been hesitant to read her contemporary fiction because many Muslim reviewers (not all) said that the Muslim representation sucks and feeds into the western stereotypes. With that said I want to read it for myself so I saved it for this readathon so I can have the courage to read it. And it was an ok read to me. While I see where the reviewers are coming from, I have to disagree that it feeds into western stereotypes. The fmc is not forced to wear the hijab, she chooses for herself and she is not stereotypically âoppressed & needs saving from a white boy.â I think what pissed a lot of the reviewers off is that our Muslim character kissed a boy and while I agree that Islam does not allow such a thing, we are human and we are not perfect and there are times where we do break the rules of our religion. The author herself stated in the beginning that everything she has written in this book are based on true events that happened in her life so I feel it is unfair that reviewers claim that this is not âauthenticâ Muslim representation because Muslims are not a monolith & they come in different forms. I know people who are Muslim that have a boyfriend/girlfriend, people who donât pray but follow the other Islamic rules in their lives, etc. With that being said, the book itself was an ok read to me. The romance was also ok but I was a bit disappointed since I absolutely adore the romance in the Shatter Me series. I also wished we explored more about the racism & bigotry that Shirin faces in the aftermath of 9/11. That is what I have been expecting when I started reading this book but unfortunately I didnât get that. The only thing where I was very invested in is the characterâs passion for breakdancing. I learned a lot reading it and now I want to check out videos of those dances because it is a fascinating sport. Overall if you want a quick short afternoon read to feel accomplished, then this book will do the trick.
#AlotroladodelocĂ©ano #TaherehMafi #AVeryLargeExpanseofSea #bookstagram #bookcommunity #librosrecomendados #lecturas2021 #comunidadlectora #booklover #romance #romancebooks #librosderomantica #youngadult #romanceintercultural

In this coming-of-age drama set in the aftermath of 9/11, Shirin, the main character, grapples with the harsh treatment of the Muslim community by society. High school becomes a tough place for her as she faces bullying and ridicule, making her relatable as a moody and unsociable teenager. Despite the challenges, her relationships with her loving parents and close bond with her older brother provide some solace. đ Though friendless at school, Shirin experiences the typical ups and downs of adolescence, involving dance and an unexpected romance with a popular boy (called Ocean!), reminiscent of a classic high school movie. However, this Ocean lacks depth in characterization, and the supposedly cute romance lacks originality in conversations. đ The narrative sheds light on Shirin's choice to wear the hijab, a decision that defies discouragement from her parents and challenges from the Islamophobic society around her. This reflects her feminist stance, asserting that the hijab is a matter of personal choice rather than a patriarchal imposition. đ§ Told entirely from Shirin's perspective, the plot may follow a predictable trajectory, but the novel remains an enjoyable read. It explores the theme of displacement within one's own country and emphasizes democratic ideals that should embrace all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnicity. đż As in many YA novels, the story concludes on a hopeful note. The author's personal experiences shine through, bringing a positive light to the narrative. Shirin's closing sentiment echoes Anne Frank's famous quote, "...in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."đ . . . #averylargeexpanseofsea #taheremafi #readthis #Womenwritingfiction #readthisbook #muslimwriters #womenwriters #911attack #youngadultfiction #islamophobhia #yafiction #Bookrecommendation #Bookreview #bookstarec #booksflatlay #booktography #bookphotography #bookishaethetic #bookishlove #annefrankquote #comingofage #teendrama #youngadultnovel #youngadultliterature

YA romances contain multitudes. They talk about discrimination and mental health and insecurity. Theyâre coming-of-age and adorable and contain characters you can truly root for. This post highlights some of my favorite YA romances. These are books that have stuck with me and that I revisit time and again. I love this genre! What are some of your favorite YA romances?

The feeling was right and I was hooked right from the start. Something I like about the book is how nothing is black or white. The story itself is at various points along a gray scale. Book Review: đ A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi đ I donât normally read Young Adult Romance. Like, ever. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and I ended up really enjoying it. This was also my first Tahereh Mafi book, considering Shatter Me isnât really my style. A Very Large Expanse of Sea follows the life of a 16-year-old Muslim girl, Shirin, a year after 9/11. Shirin wears a hijab, making her a target for constant stereotyping and terrible treatment by everyone around her. In response, she is very guarded and doesnât let anyone get close to her. She finds solace in hip-hop and break dancing with her brother and a few of his friends. In her new school, a boy in her class wants to get to know her. This is unfamiliar territory to Shirin and terrifies her. Navigating a world that is against her, Shirin has to confront her emotions towards him, while also dealing with hate, discrimination, and racism on a daily basis. Although I was young in 2002 (9), I lived in the South and remember how Islamophobia was rampant everywhere. I couldnât imagine being Muslim AND in high school during that time. Shirin was an amazing character that I loved watching grow throughout the book. She was strong, intelligent, brave, and didnât put up with anyoneâs shit. Despite the adversity she had to deal with on a daily basis, Shirin stayed true to herself. Truly and inspirational. I only gave 4 pizzas because the love interest, Ocean, fell a little flat for me. He wasnât the most well rounded or interesting character, especially for a badass like Shirin. Also, the ending was abrupt and pissed me off. Overall, A Very Large Expanse of Sea is a fascinating, emotional, and inspirational story that you will not want to put down. #averylargeexpanseofsea #taherehmafi #taherehmafibooks #literaturainternacional #bookstagram #bookstagramportugal #comunidadeliterĂĄria #igliterario #instagramliterario #booksaboutracism #livrossobreracismo #booklover #bookaholic #bookaddict
I donât read YA often, but someone told me a few years back that I had to read Tahereh Mafiâs A Very Large Expanse of Sea (pub 2018). I had bought it then but it sat on my never ending, ever growing TBR. I finally picked it up and was committed to Shirin and Oceanâs story. There was a line towards the end that hit me: Shirin talks about peopleâs transition from nasty to nice giving her whiplash. I paused at that moment and thought about all Shirin had experienced, similarly but not on the same scale for Ocean too. How judgment is quick and unreliable and how ugly people can be to what is unknown, or not âstandardâ to them. While I ended my 2023 with this book, I start my 2024 being reminded to not get caught up in judging too quickly. đ synopsis (courtesy of publisher): Itâs 2002, a year after 9/11. Itâs an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl whoâs tired of being stereotyped. Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. Sheâs tired of the rude stares, the degrading commentsâeven the physical violenceâshe endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So sheâs built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother. But then she meets Ocean James. Heâs the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies herâthey seem to come from two irreconcilable worldsâand Shirin has had her guard up for so long that sheâs not sure sheâll ever be able to let it down. âhave a book recommendation for me? #saturdaynitereader #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #readersofinstagram #youngadultbooks #averylargeexpanseofsea #epicreads #bookcover #booklover

Letâs talk about this series⊠I tried to really get into this series but I couldnât do it.
Me conta aqui que vou amar saber đ

âą A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA âą 16-year-old Shirin has come to expect the very worst of people â degrading remarks, sweeping assumptions, angry comments, and even physical violence, all in response to her skin color, religion, and hijab she chooses to wear. In the year following 9/11, sheâs experienced all of it, and as a result, sheâs put up walls to protect herself, only allowing herself friendship with her older brother. But at her third high school in less than three years, Shirin is paired up as lab partners with Ocean James, a popular white athlete, who seems to be curious about and interested in Shirin. And despite her best efforts, he might just be chipping away at her walls. I found Shirinâs story to be very compelling, with raw, nuanced emotions that Mafi articulated so well, with the uncertainty of first love and the uncertainty of who you are in comparison to how others perceive you. I loved that Shirin first starts to see an honest reflection of herself with her brotherâs friends in their break-dancing crew. These guys who are not all Persian, as she is, but who have experienced similar prejudice, help her to see how sheâs coming across in a way that was unexpected. I also couldnât help but feel frustrated that although this book is set in 2002 (and published in 2018), there was nothing about it that felt like it couldnât have been set in 2023. Although it feels like the last four years have seen some sort of radical racial reckoning, it feels like we have made very little concrete progress. In fact, there was a scene in her current events class in which they were assigned to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that felt particularly disheartening given our current moment.
