🥂 Book Review 🥂 The Guncle Abroad By: Steven Rowley Pub Date: May 21, 2024 I’m calling it now: The Guncle Abroad is THE book of the summer! ☀️ Steven Rowley made readers fall in love with The Guncle two years ago, and now he’s back in the follow-up novel, The Guncle Abroad. And dare I say, I think I loved this one even more?! Our favorite characters are back, as Gay Uncle Patrick is tasked with traveling with Maisie and Grant (his niece and nephew) to Europe for their father’s wedding in Italy. Patrick’s biggest task however, is helping the kids accept this big change to their family and help them understand the complexities of love. I really related and felt a connection with this book as my own kids are the same ages as Maisie and Grant. From the angst and attitudes to the innocence, Rowley captured these young characters so well! I also loved how Patrick found transformational growth for himself, and moved forward in his own grief and love. This book will take you through a myriad of emotions, as Rowley does so well. My heart swelled and broke often and I can’t even begin to tell you how laugh out loud funny this book is!! We are graced with our favorite characters again, as well as some new ones who won my heart over and then some! From a musical number in the heart of The Sound of Music, to an off the wall reception dinner, this book has it ALL!! The Guncle Abroad comes out this week, and you are going to want to read this one. ✨️🖤The Deer and The Dragon🖤✨️ No Other Gods Book 1 By @piper_cj This story has a permanent spot in my heart and mind. Piper's writing has entirely enchanted me. The Deer and The Dragon is an intense emotional journey through a woman's battle with mental health, religious trauma, and a guilt ridden forbidden romance. This book has wonderful LGBTQ representation and SW positivity. Also represents the very real difficulties of religious deconstruction and the effects that has on family dynamics. This was very relatable as I have also been through similar experiences. Though that is personal to me, I do still believe people without those experiences would enjoy this story. If you enjoy fantasy books with fae, demons, Norse gods, and even angels as well as other entities, you will enjoy this book. The way Piper writes her characters is truly relatable and refreshing. Most fantasy books I read are stories reflecting characters without flaws, and while that's good and fine, it's not realistic. This book has a lot of diversity, which I appreciate. I am left feeling like this could be a true story, and the way she merges the fantasy with the contemporary world is natural and so believable that I am left questioning my own humanity. I highly recommend all of Piper's books, but this is my favorite. Bravo Piper on writing yet another brilliant best seller. ARC (Belated) Review: Otherworldly By F.T. Lukens - @ ftlukens Released: April 2 2024 Rating: 4/5 Format: e-book via @netgalley shortly before release The Low-Down: Young Adult. Non-binary main character. Dual POV. F/F side characters. Adventure. Fantasy. Magic. Supernatural. The story follows Ellery, the human who doesn't believe in magic, and Knox, the magical assistant on the run. A chance rescue in an alley has Ellery rethinking all they once knew and falling for someone they didn't believe existed. But that person is why the human world is experiencing a never-ending winter and why Ellery's family farm is on the brink of losing everything. While I absolutely loved this book, as I have other F.T. Lukens' books, the plot is predictable. If you've read other F.T. Lukens books, you'll immediately recognize a pattern and how this will end. I know that can be a turn-off for a lot of people. However, the writing is still solid, and the characters are intriguing. The author has a wonderful knack for always writing strong Queer leads, as well as love stories that bend the realms (pun-intended.) P.S. Kit's family are archaeology vips while Kit, with his epilepsy and love for books, is a historian. Living a quiet life in the shadow of his family, including a former stepbrother he "hates", he one day tries on a crown he is studying and the story takes a The Mummy Returns twist, like when the kid puts on the bracelet showing them where to go. Soooo an adventure starts! An adventure Kit is in no way ready for; luckily for him, Ethan, former stepbrother Kit likes to hate because he is just perfect with a perfect body, perfect hair, perfect smile, is an archeologist so off they all go into the jungle trying to find a temple that nobody has ever found with a map that was stolen like one second into the adventure. Kit is like me, with no adventure bone in my body, but loving decoding puzzles. With spiders and so many other jungle creatures being constant companions, he really doesn't need something more going on during the trip but maybe finding himself kissing Ethan isn't so bad. Kit, the most oblivious guy in the universe. Ethan could've just told him but Kit is a porcupine when it comes to him. Thank goodness the jungle managed to play wingman for them with danger infested waters and spiders that just force them to share a tent. Oh what a struggle, the force vicinity; the stink of not showering isn't stronger than feelings!! Yay for cave steamy shenanigans!! And yay for treasure hunting!! Rules For Ghosting explores life, death, love, and loss through the lens of Jewish and LGBTQIA+ culture. This book had me teary eyed more than once, which is a big deal because I never cry. I connected so deeply with this book and its themes of found family, love, and growth. This is Shelly Jay Shore’s (@shellyjayshore) debut novel and I hope she writes more. ✨️ Book Review "Our Wives Under The Sea" by Julia Armfield ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first time reading Julia Armfield, so I didn't know what to expect when I started, but I was so pleasantly surprised from the get go. Her writing style has a truly magical touch to it, and it got me hooked from the start. The dual pov's threw me off a bit (as I'm not a big fan of multiple pov's in general), especially in the first third of the book - I found it hard to connect to Miri's voice, found her chapters too long, and kept wishing for Leah's chapters to be longer. The last two thirds changed this, however, as the book picked up in both pace and storytelling (while still being very much character driven, mind you). While I always enjoyed Leah's chapters more than Miri's (that was a constant throughout the book, probably because they had an almost paranormal touch to them that I found very addictive), Miri grew on me as the plot unfolded. The story is enticing and compelling - it's a mystery, a (soft) horror and, at its very core, a sapphic story of love, grief and release. The prose is beautiful, introspective and lyrical. While being slow-paced, the story leaves you with questions at every turn and it keeps you completely enthralled and curious. I also thought it was a gorgeous ode to the ocean and the unknown - the vastness of everything around us, the enormity of what we don't know. I Kissed Shara Wheeler 🌸💋 Even though this wasn’t an instant fav like RWRB or One Last Stop it was still a fun, cute, low-stakes read. • Book Review • Book: A Sweet Sting of Salt Author: Rose Sutherland Genre: Historical Fantasy Publisher: @penguinrandomhouse Pub Date: Available Now The winter wind slammed into the cabin walls, an icy rain pounding toward the ground sending shivers up her spine. There was a fire in the hearth, but it was doing little to ward off the cold. Just as she attempted to drift off to sleep a sharp cry pierced the howling wind outside. Her mind fully alert, she ventures out to investigate. A Sweet Sting of Salt is a historical fiction, sapphic retelling of The Selkie Wife, following Jean, a midwife in a small town. When she meets Muirin for the first time who is caught out in a storm and in labor, they strike up a connection that sets Jean’s life on a new path. I was hooked in the beginning of this book and found the writing to be beautiful. I was intrigued by the characters and especially Muirin… wanting to know more about her backstory. But the book really dragged for me after the first 20% and I found myself quite bored when not much plot unfolded. I did appreciate the writing though and I loved the exploration of Muirin and Jean’s relationship, but overall this book didn’t capture me like I would have preferred. If you’re looking for a historical fiction with magical realism and an exploration of a sapphic relationship… I’d recommend checking this one out if it sounds interesting to you! 🏒⛸️🥅 QOTD!! Do you like it when a character has a nickname? Which is your favourite? ROOKIE RECOVERY!! Such a sweet cheesefest with a pinch of angst and some pining which is always appreciated. I loved it!! Bowie, amazing British hockey player, was a ray of sunshine, all smiles, freckles, green eyes, and full of cockiness. Constantly horny saying the most inappropriate things, like he just can't censor himself, zero filters on that boy. Then we have grumpy hot af PT Jamie; James Sullivan, yes, like in Monster Inc, so of course Bowie's nickname for him is Kitty and it was just adorable. Jamie is a bit lost, he is trying to get away from the hockey scene, still living the trauma of having his dream snatched away by an injury. So when he needs to help extra flirty Bowie who is so tempting he needs to constantly pray to some higher beings to give him strength, he goes into full military training mode. But in between stretching and healing, they get closer and closer going on hikes, swimming in lakes, grocery shopping, cooking and eating homemade food made by Bowie, having picnics, and just spending time together. And they fall, at first in lust, then hard in love, slow burn, so much pining making me scream JUST KISS ALREADY a couple of times, or a hundred. My heart hurt a bit but the sweetness just made everything worth it. It was just so cute, I can't stop grinning. Bowie is just the most adorable guy ever, I want to hug him and pinch his cheeks! Which cheeks, you ask? He is a hockey player so who knows? 😏🍑 HEA guaranteed with a perfect ending, too. Extra sweet just like them. I need more! I hope to see them in the next books of the series. Highlight of the book? The trolley museum: a museum of shopping carts. I won't look at a cart the same way again. Everytime they mentioned the carts I just couldn't stop my snort. Review: Whisper into the Night (Rainbow Brigade Series 1) by Jay Leigh - @jayelle_m Released: April 25, 2023 Rating: 5/5 Format: Kindle Unlimited E-Book Recommended by: Instagram ads The Low-Down: Adult. M/M. Political intrigue. Forbidden love. President's Son/Secret Service Agent. Mental health rep. Talks of violence. This review is long overdue since I read it last summer, but better late than never. This book is told from multiple character POV, which was confusing for me at first but is necessary to set you up for the complete Rainbow Brigade series (including F/F rep!) However, the focus of Whisper is on the female President's eldest son, Theo, who ultimately falls for his secret service agent, Connor. It has the drama you would expect for forbidden love and for a political setting, but also strong family dynamics causing animosity. Don't expect the President to be Ellen Claremont because she's far from it. I don't even know if I can express how much I loved the main character of this book, Theo. He's a "comfort character" for me. Like when you have a comfort movie or TV show for when you're sad, that's Theo for me. I loved him because I understood him...and all of his emotional support cookies. There are trigger warnings that I'd recommend reading from the author before reading this. Based on my history, had I read the warnings, I would have skipped this book. I'm glad I didn't because I fell hard for these characters. This book had lgbtqia characters, spice, forbidden love, angst, and addressed mental health. Almost all of my top favorite things (minus a famous/entertainment storyline and maybe hockey.) ARC (Belated) Review: The Breakup Lists by Adib Khorram Released: April 2, 2024 Rating: 4/5 Format: eBook via #netgalley The Low-Down: Rom-com. Drama. Young Adult, with heavy makeout scenes. M/M. BIPOC rep. Falling for your sister's ex. Hard of hearing rep. Cuteness overload. I really enjoyed Kiss & Tell, so I knew Adib's latest release was going to be at the top of my TBR list. This book was very much My Fair Brady meets Mean Girls meets High School Musical. The Breakup Lists follows the main character, Jackson, through his high school journey and the school's theater production, so naturally, there's going to be drama. What happens when that drama is falling for his sister's boyfriend? Or its his own version of a "burn book" in the form of "breakup lists" being exposed to the entire school? What set this book apart for me was Jackson's POV as a hard of hearing person and the sign language rep. I loved that the challenges of communication with his peers and family were often brought up. He was expected to adapt to others rather than them attempting to adapt to him. Cue curtains on the cute swim captain in the form of Liam, who takes sign language lessons to communicate better with Jackson. Swoon. What a keeper. We really don't see media rep for hard of hearing often, let alone in a Queer story, and it was truly chef's kiss. My biggest hurdle in this book and probably the main reason I did not give it a 5 was the overuse of the phrase, "scratch that." I nearly DNFed this book a million times because of it. However, I reminded myself to have faith in Adib and trekked on. Every Word You Never Said by @jordon_greene <3 I read this book 2 years ago, if i remember correctly- May 2022. And it’s still one of my favourites, a book i still think about A LOT. The friendship, crushes, young love but also getting into the reality of religion. The development with Imani and Seth, soooo rooting for them throughout. I feel like Jordon did a good job on showing the dark and light side within religion. Getting supported, and not getting the support needed. I felt seen due to the years i experienced as a kid in church and stories i’ve heard from family. Although, what happened to me was a different thing than in the book, it felt as if i was there along side the characters. utter heartbreak. moving on to the happier parts! I ADORED the friendship between Skylar, Imani and Seth. I truly loved the development between Jacob and Skylar, especially as they go through misunderstandings.
