✨review✨ ★ ★ ★ ★.75 Girls Made of Snow and Glass is a reimagining of the Snow White fairytale. I love fantasy books that focus on a family & relationships more with a side romance but there are sadly not a lot of those out there. So when i found this book i was so excited to read it. It didn’t disappoint! This story focuses on Mina & Lynet’s mother daughter relationship. I enjoyed their relationship and seeing the ups and downs of it. The character development was by far the best part of this book. Mina’s character arc was amazingly well written and i found some parts of her relatable. Mina has both pov’s from when she was 16 & present day which i really enjoyed, as it showed how she became the person she is. Both Mina & Lynet had romances in this book. Lynet’s was sapphics that wasn’t too insta lovey, i found them very cute but there just wasn’t enough time for me to fall head over heals for them. I did fall for Mina’s relationship! Which is not surprising because she was my favorite This is a really good standalone fantasy novel that had me intrigued and interested from beginning to end. Buried Deep and Other Stories, by Naomi Novik, is a great collection of fantasy short stories. I know a majority of these have been published previously, but they were all new to me. One of the things I love most about this book is that all but one of the stories has strong female leads-human or otherwise. They generally lead the men where they want them to go, fight for their livelihood, their independence, or just show their incredible strength. Some of my favorite stories from this collection are Vici-a female dragon that was meant to be killed as punishment; Blessings-drunk fairies come and haphazardly bless a baby with unflattering gifts; Seven Years From Home-a woman is sent to another planet to collect intel for her home planet; and Dragons & Decorum-a fantasy take on Pride and Prejudice. Some of the stories are infused with humor, some with problems and pain that hit close to home, but all show an aim that the character strive for-successfully overcoming obstacles and learning lessons along the way. QOTD: What is your favorite retelling you’ve read? Galatea by Madeline Miller At only 56 pages (including the author’s note) you wouldn’t think this story would be very remarkable but it is! I’m a sucker for anything Madeline Miller writes and Galatea helped fill the hole that was left in my heart by The Song of Achilles and Circe. Galatea’s story was beautifully done and so impactful. I wish I could say more but don’t want to spoil anything for those that don’t know the myth! I also need to give a special shout out to the amazing author’s note. Truthfully, I never read those but I did this time and I really don’t regret it. It gave even more insight to the story and was perfectly done. •Book Review• Kept by Evelyn Flood aka @evelynfloodauthor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ Kept is book one of the Forbidden Fairytales series, but can be read as a standalone. I came across this book on TikTok. The author, Evelyn Flood, was posting little excerpts and I was immediately intrigued! Zella, the FMC, has been forced to live alone in an apartment for 23 years (with visits from her “caregiver” every few days) gets rescued/kidnapper by three males (Maverick, Ryder, and Enzo). It’s a happily ever after, and I just loved it so much. I flew through this book. I read it in one sitting, and pretty much inhaled it. It’s a reverse harem, sunshine/grumpy, morally grey MMCs, “touch her and you die” vibes, and oh so spicy!!! It’s definitely a dark romance, so make sure you read the trigger warnings before you read it. I’ve been trying to get out of this reading slump for such a long time and Kept definitely yanked me out of it! REVIEW: HERA 👑🦚🏛️ 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Is women crush Wednesday still a thing? If so then today’s WCW goes to Hera, the queen of the gods! She was the goddess of marriage, family, childbirth, and women. Hera was also the wife, and sister, of Zeus. A lot of the myths involving Hera centre around her jealous retributions against Zeus’ infidelity and the way Jennifer Saint’s retelling moves the narrative along does this very well. As well as being Hera’s story and her perspective, we get to meet a whole cast of Greek gods and goddesses, getting a taster of all the well known myths from Jason and the argonauts to Heracles (Hercules) who kills the hydra to the Trojan war… This is a great read for anyone who is new to Greek mythology as it maps all the great Greek myths that many flow from the actions of Hera in response to Zeus’s actions. Even I didn’t know how many stories connected with Hera and found this to be fascinating! I would have liked to have more of a deep dive in some of the myths but it would make this book a very long one if it did so! Hera’s jealousy is obviously clear in this book but it’s for good reason given Zeus’ antics and we get to see how powerful she is in changing the fates of mortals and immortals alike. We also see her compassion and her kindness towards others. I found the relationships with Hydra, her son Typhon and to her grandchildren to be really touching. Anyone who loves greek mythology and Jennifer Saint’s books will be happy with this next retelling! Book Review: Happy Tuesday!!! A couple of days ago I finished What Once Was Mine by @lizbraswell and it was very enjoyable! Another great book to the twisted tales! Here’s my review: “This was not what I was expecting but I certainly didn’t hate it! It was actually quite enjoyable. I didn’t expect the tale of Rapunzal mixed with real life story telling. It was different than the other books but a good different! Tangled is my second favorite Disney movie so I was so excited for this one. Rapunzal is still as strong and gorgeous as ever!! When she sets her mind to something she does it strongly and fiercely! Her love is unmatched! And her ability to love and trust despite what happened to her is just amazing!! Flynn!! My love!!🥰 I still love him more in the movie but I also think we get his real thoughts in this book about obsessing over her first!!! Him fighting for her despite the blows he’s dealt is amazing! The story was full of revenge and vengeance. Shin Lina is out for it all. She’s a dark, powerful, possessed, and bitter girl. 👑BOOK REVIEW👑 ✨Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel✨ 🌟Genre: Fantasy/Mythology Such a fascinating read! I knew nothing about Kaikeyi or the Ramayana going into this one - Hindu mythology was something I had never studied - and I ending up truly loving it! The author does have a note before the story starts explaining how Kaikeyi came to be and what this reimagining is based on. It's super helpful to understanding the story! One thing I absolutely enjoyed about this was the little anecdotes of various myths, gods, and goddesses that Kaikeyi "tells" to the reader. Now this book was a bit of a slow burn for me. I found Part 1 to move very slow since it was explaining Kaikeyi's childhood and building up to the actual action packed story that was coming later on. The author did a great job with this story! If you're into mythology and are looking for a fresh take/reimagining of Kaikeyi and her part in the Ramayana, then this is one to try! Happy Tuesday! What was your favourite show as a teen? . Lore Olympus Volume 4 by Rachel Smythe 3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I am still really enjoying this series but admittedly this one I enjoyed less for two reasons. The first is I’m impatient 😂 And teenage tv shows ruined the whole “will they won’t they” trope for me. So for me, personally, I need the romance to chop chop 😂😂 Obviously this very much might not be an issue for most people 😂😂 The other thing for me, which is only coming now after reading multiple Hades x Persephone retellings, is that this story is laid out in a way for readers who already know the myths and characters. I personally don’t very well so admittedly I did start to get confused with some of the characters & the significance they are supposed to play. For me I think a bit more back story or intent would be good for readers who don’t know the myths so well. Apart from that the art work is still GORGEOUS and I am still really enjoying the story. 📓📘BOOK TOUR📘📓 Orphia and Eurydicius By Elyse John An an English major undergrad, I took as many mythology classes as I could get away with; as an ancient civilizations middle school teacher, I had my students dress in Greek garb and retell myths, complete with props and olive wreaths. Therefore, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that nobody is more behind the bookish trend of Greek myth retellings than yours truly. Thank you so much, @tlcbooktours for my copy of Elyse John's Orphia and Eurydicius. Despite being a major tragedy, a love story that is beyond sad, the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of my favorites. In it, poet-musician Orpheus marries his wood-nymph love Eurydice, but on their wedding day she dies from a snakebite. Devastated, Orpheus travels to the underworld to get her back, using his music to successfully convince Hades to allow her to return, with one condition: she must be led all the way out without him looking back at her during the journey. Orpheus successfuslly resists checking on her until they are steps away from the surface, then turns for just one glimpse. Eurydice vanishes before his eyes, back to Hades, leaving him alone for the rest of his life. 😭💔 Besides being a tearjerker of a love story, what intrigues me in this tale is that Orpheus—unlike so many terrible humans in Greek myths who are greedy, self-important, unfaithful, overconfident, etc and deserve punishment by the gods— is simply deeply in love with his wife. Why must he suffer? I can’t wait to see what this author does with her retelling. Orphia now daughter of Apollo, a warrior-girl who longs to be a poet, and Eurydicius, a shield-maker who loves her? Orphia joins up with the Argonauts, facing dragons and sirens in a quest for the Golden Fleece? Gaining fame but having to fight for her love using the power of poetry? Yeeesssss! What are you up to this Monday, a Memorial Day holiday for many? 🌟 Just finished watching *The Grimm Variations* on Netflix! 🌟 This series was a mix of hits and misses for me. If you're not familiar with the original Grimm tales, some episodes might go over your head. 📚 I absolutely loved "The Town Musicians of Bremen," "Little Red Riding Hood," and the dark, twisted take on "Cinderella." 🎶🐺👠 These were fantastic! However, not all episodes were as dark and sinister as the trailer suggested. Some were quite lighthearted, but each one carried a meaningful message. 🌗✨ This series is fascinating if you enjoy retellings. The plot was an interesting twist on what could be seen as a dark version of the little mermaid with a greek mythological twist of Midas. I also enjoyed the fact that it was a standalone. I love a series, but it was nice to get an exciting story that I finished without having to wait for the next book.
