But in reality, the cut flower industry relies heavily on imported flowers—in 2017 alone, the U.S. imported more than 4 billion roses from Colombia. Those imported flowers are also often treated with pesticides and packaged with tough-to-recycle materials like cellophane. So this year, think local: Purchase a plant from your local nursery for a loved one, or support a local grower from a flower farm in your area. For Aaron and myself, we don't celebrate Valentine's Day. A bouquet of flowers on a random day means so much more than one given as an obligation to a holiday (that's my own personal opinion). That being said, following this same challenge, we will try to buy local. I actually dont like roses or daisies, but I am in love with our native wildflowers, what most people call weeds. I then dry them out and use them for decoration that lasts. This is a great way to reuse something that has such a short shelf life. Another fab day of herbal medicine with an equally fab group of like minded peeps. We made fire cider, rosehip and hawthorn syrup. We tried various tinctures and syrups and discussed how plants can support our health and wellbeing during the Winter months. We had a yummy vegan lunch and then walked off lunch with a walk in an ancient wood where we spotted various shrooms and fungi and this amazing turkeys tail which has an array of antioxidants, phenols and flavonoids. 🌱🍓 Strawberry Spinach🍓🌱 This strawberry spinach was volunteer from last year. I highly recommend as a yearly grow for more of an old school survival vegetable. It's related to lamb's quarters and magentaspreen which are in the same weedy category of wild/survival veggies. I'm obsessed with this genre of medicines and foods 💯. So nutrient dense and easy to grow in a drought which is what our area is known for this time of year. I love how the seeds show up in these little raspberry-like nodules on the stem. They are very juicy and slightly sweet. Scout and I ate a bunch this morning when we were watering. The leaves are an excellent substitute for OG spinach in any recipe. Drawing dandelions… I made myself go outside and draw from life yesterday. I am in the habit of drawing from screens for reference. I want to break this habit, so I took 20 minutes from my lunch time to go outside the studio and sit and draw from life. The drawing compared to the photo I took afterwards shows how drawing is for me about editing, it’s leaving out what isn’t important, to reveal what is important. I am also editing other things at the moment. My dads things. What to keep and what to give to charity? What is important? What will be important next year, in 10 years time? Is it clutter or precious possessions? The fear of giving away something that you later realise was important. Maybe this is the fear behind hoarding. Anyway, that was quite a tangent!! I do know convulvulous - AKA Bindweed - is a terrible pest and most people hate it but you’ve got to admit - it’s so pretty!!! There’s something almost other-worldly about it - it brings to mind the fairyland of my childhood imagination. The bell-like flowers, the shapely leaves, the lush fecundity of it, the way it twines and winds its away around trees and bushes - around anything, in fact, that’s standing still enough for it to get purchase. Needless to say, Kev - my hubby - absolutely hates it and was about to rip up this particularly lovely specimen. I begged him not to. We haven’t got any gardening implements here at our rental and aren’t expected to do any gardening so I suggested we live and let live. And so the bindweed remains - for now.
