Imagine that as a child you were issued a large backpack to wear at all times. At first you didn’t know what it was for, but then the adults around you started putting rocks in it that you then obediently carried around. After a while you followed their example and began to put rocks in there yourself. Over a period of time, some of the rocks disappeared, but most didn’t, and by now that pack was getting really, really heavy. You often pull out some of the rocks and look at them. They don’t make you happy. In fact they make you feel miserable. Some at the bottom you never pull out—you might not even remember you have them–but still you carry them. Why you ask, would anyone voluntarily bear such a burden? Unfortunately these rocks are not chunks of shale or granite or sandstone. Those would be too easy to get rid of! BLACK COHOSH ROOT - Actaea racemosa (formerly Cimicifuga racemosa) Native Americans of the Eastern United States highly valued this delightful, conspicuous member of the Buttercup family with its tall flower spike that rises brightly from the thicket of the forest floor. 🌿Medicinal Use - The first settlers soon learned the benefits of this amazing herb and used it as the Native Americans taught them, for muscular aches and pains, and, most importantly, as an excellent regulating herb for ‘female complaints’. Black Cohosh rose to fame with the Eclectic branch of medicine, which valued it highly, but almost sunk into oblivion when the eclectic fad faded away. However, it was noted by some Europeans who took it back to England and Germany. The English planted it in their gardens, while the Germans took it to the laboratory. This has been one of the more intense eclipse seasons I have personally experienced and yet I know through every emotional incident, I am healing deeper wounds. BLACK WALNUT TREE- Native to the Eastern US with a large range spanning most of the Mississippi watershed. Here in Western PA, I’m actually at the very edge of its natural range (although I know people plant them north of where I am) Black walnuts are an overstory tree, meaning they need light and grow tall, forming part of the canopy of the forest. They have a spicy smell when they are crushed or rubbed. Walnut trees produce a very strong wood that is dark in color and is easily worked. Black Walnut produces a really delicious edible nut—the black walnut nut is not easy to crack, but is well worth the effort! Like many other hardwood nut trees, most walnuts produce a really good harvest every few years and need sunlight in order to do so. 🌿Walnut as an Expeller - One of the few things people often know about black walnut is that it is allelopathic, meaning that it produces a chemical called juglone that oxidizes in soil and prevents certain kinds of other plants from growing under or near it. It also can increase the soil alkalinity around the roots. Some plants, like black raspberry or serviceberry, have no difficulty growing under black walnut. Others, like tomatoes, pines, apples, or birches, cannot grow and will be poisoned by the juglone. This has been well known and documented for centuries. Juglone is concentrated in nut hulls, roots, and buds; to a lesser extent, it also occurs in leaves and stems. 🌿Medicinal Uses - the bark and leaves of the Black Walnut are alterative, laxative, and astringent, and are specifically used for skin issues like eczema, herpes, and other skin conditions. Ive heard that the juice of the green husks, boiled with honey, is really good for a sore throat/gargle. The leaves can be used for external eczema, ring worm, itch, shingles, tumors, abscesses, boils, and acne.
