Yesterday at @mother_natives Garden Club, we gathered in a communal circle to explore plant propagation, focusing on native plants and the importance of local ecosystems. 💚🌱 We had the opportunity to interact closely with native plantitas, taking propagation cuttings from native plants known for their stem-cutting adaptability. Later, we engaged with a flower’s anatomy through sketching, deepening our connection with these vital elements of our environment. 🌺 Despite the rain, I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone who joined us—your presence enriched our circle, and we were able to share a meaningful moment celebrating a birthday! 🎉 Deep appreciation to the incredible Shevaun @mother_natives for making this gathering possible. An hour and a half of garden work this morning. I had good helpers. We weeded green beans and cucumbers, adding more seeds in the empty spots (had some not germinate and others maybe had their tops eaten or somehow damaged). We put in 26 homegrown tomato plants (Rutger's) and about a dozen homegrown peppers (various kinds). We weeded the few surviving broccoli and lettuces. We sowed 3.5 rows of okra (Clemson spineless). Finally, I potted up some gifted daylily seeds that I sowed in a milk jug ("winter sowing" method). Whew!

💥 PSA - if you live in Frederick County Maryland, now is a great time to start gradually hardening off those seedlings that you started inside! "Hardening is the process of exposing transplants (seedlings) gradually to outdoor conditions. It enables your transplants to withstand the changes in environmental conditions they will face when planted outside in the garden. It encourages a change from soft, succulent growth to a firmer, harder growth. Begin hardening transplants 1-2 weeks prior to setting out plants in your garden. The easiest way to harden transplants is to place them outside in a shaded, protected spot on warm days, bringing them in at night. Each day, increase the amount of sunlight the transplants receive. Don’t put tender seedlings outdoors on windy days or when temperatures are below 45° F. Even cold-hardy plants will be hurt if exposed to freezing temperatures before they are hardened. Reduce the frequency of watering to slow plant growth, but don’t allow plants to wilt. A cold frame provides an excellent environment for hardening off transplants. After proper hardening, tomato plants can usually tolerate light and unexpected frosts with minimum damage. The hardening process is intended to slow plant growth. If carried to the extreme of actually stopping plant growth, significant damage can be done to certain crops. For example, cauliflower will produce thumb-sized heads and fail to develop further. Cucumbers and melons will stop growing if hardened too severely. Can you believe this weekend was our first time staying the night in a yurt!!😮 First time for everything & our first was Michigan’s own @yellowmoonyurt ! We gladly did a little work-for-stay taking part in the collective that makes up @thirdcoastherbalcollective & had a great time doing it! We did it all! Snake wrangled (thanks for the experience JM you are awesome) had story time, transplanted strawberries, dug ramps & hazelnut trees, jammed with friends, talked life & ate oh so good! Gracie makes a real good chicken soup! #iykyk We love getting our hands in the soil & helping out where we can! And it turns out we LOVE yurts—just as we expected! The nights were comfortable & the mornings were sweet. It was all worth it just for the backyard bird songs. You can truly tell the land here is loved because it is so alive! ✨💓 Totally wish I would have taken more pictures to share but I was completely unplugged, in the moment & just taking it all in!
