I've been following the author of this book pretty much since I began my account. We seem to enjoy similar kind of books, so when they wrote their own, I was super excited. I made my local library buy a copy and I hope more people pick it up. I had no idea I needed a an aroace vampire story in my life. The found family/ band aspect was excellent, I loved the dark academia undertones and the relationships were very cute. Lucy gave me major Darla vibes (the vampire in Buffy, not my cat) and I loved Rani as the best friend. I was pretty tired when I finished the book, so I'm not quite sure I understood the ending. ✨ Summer Hopefuls ✨ It has been a minute since I made a post. Teaching has kept me busy as the school year winds down, especially with grading. However, I am excited for summer because summer means a break and summer means reading! To be frank, I really am just planning to read as many books as possible this summer to cut down my physical TBR. My goal is to try to read more books than I acquire. The purpose is to be able to use the library more to save some money. I have a lot of hopefuls, but there are some books I want to prioritize. First, I have had Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? and Kaikeyi on my TBR for awhile and I finally want to read them so I can count them towards my BOTM challenge. Next, I LOVED the Kingdom of the Wicked series, so I’m excited to read Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco. Lastly, Evil Eye is high on my list of to read. A Woman is No Man is one of my all time favorite reads and I know Evil Eye is going to be just as good. I’ve heard great things from others, so I’m excited to read it. Just For the Summer is a beautiful and heart wrenching romance that broke me and put me back together. Really Abby Jimenez’s best book yet (but do read Part of Your World first!). When We Lost Our Heads is a beautifully written, feminist, magical, weird and witty book with a toxic sapphic relationship at its core. It’s about privilege, revolution and women workers rights. It’s brilliant how Heather O’Neill combines it all and works in these fictional and historical stories at the same time. I’d highly recommend it. Have you read any of these? As a longtime lover of vampire stories, I enjoy reading a different twist on the tale. When we meet Arlo at university, he is somewhat lost and struggling to connect with people. An impulsive choice to go for a date leads to his turning. However, Arlo emerges as the most hesitant of vampires. The book isn’t just a vampire tale though. It equally serves as a chronicle of friendship, found family and self-realization. I really enjoyed the character driven plot, where I found myself both rooting for and shedding tears for multiple characters. Upfront let me say I dnfed this one. I couldn't do it. Somehow, after more than 200 pages, the only feelings I had were boredom and annoyance. "Fallen Thorns" promises an enticing plunge into a world of blood and immortality but delivers little more than a stale imitation of vampire lore. From what I gathered there's a nice twist but no sorry, I didn't stick around. While there are glimpses of potential buried beneath the surface, they are ultimately overshadowed by so many issues I couldn't enjoy it whatsoever. This novel is littered with awkward and unnecessary descriptors and unsolicited hand-holding of the reader. Furthermore, protagonist Arlo is as infuriating as he is forgettable. His inconsistent behavior and contradictory motivations made me actually violent: In the quote above he claims not to enjoy the attention but readily admits to playing his own *compositions*. Boy, get out. That moment not only defies logic but also undermines any sympathy I might have had for him. Especially because nobody treats him as the prick he is! His whole personality was Woe is me🎻 and Red Flag🚩. Despite multiple opportunities to seek answers and understand his situation, he stubbornly clings to ignorance, which frustrated me as well. For the majority of the novel, events unfold at a glacial pace, with little to no forward momentum. We meandered through tedious scenes, until I had to quit. I will say, however, if you enjoy the writings of Aiden Thomas and/or Olivie Blake you might enjoy this one but don't take my word for it! 🥀 Fallen Thorns de Harvey Oliver Baxter 🥀 Cuando lo empecé estaba pasando por un bloqueo lector importante y creo que por eso al principio me costó un poco meterme en la historia, pero también ha sido el libro que me ha sacado del bloqueo a medida que avanzaba !! Lo que más destaco es que tiene unos plot twist increíbles (de los mejores que he leído) que van creando una trama super bien trabajada que te hace sentir que formas parte de esta sociedad que te muestra y del mundo que te va presentando, porque además la construccion de este me ha parecido muy original. Además hay una increíble representación aroace y queer en general y personajes que acabas amando, aunque también es verdad que me hubiese encantado conocer más en profundidad a algunos secundarios. Pero sé que aún quedan libros por salir, así que tengo fé en que habrá más de ellos !! Os ánimo a leerlo si os gusta una buena historia de vampiros, horror, misterio, sociedades secretas y además personajes muy bien desarrollados. 〔𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 by 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 𝑶𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒂𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒓〕 ↳There are so many things I loved about this book. First of all, the prologue. In my opinion, it is one of the fundamental elements of a book: it allows you to enter the atmosphere of the book, it's a first approach to the author's writing style, and often already from the prologue you can understand whether you will like the book or not. And the prologue of Fallen Thorns immediately promises an outstanding book. The first thing that certainly captured me right away was the atmosphere. Baxter's style perfectly reflects the mood they wanted to create in the book, making the entire reading immersive. The story is well developed, but sometimes it slows down the pace in order to deeply develop the psychology of the characters, making the reading even more exciting and intriguing. The supernatural component is what kicks off the book, which makes you unable to stop reading it and which leaves you glued to the pages until the end. But the strongest points of the book are the characters, especially Arlo, our protagonist. Arlo can speak to many readers in many different ways. Aroace and neurodivergent, he approaches university life with anxiety, desperately seeking his way in the world. Finally, the other characters add what is needed to make this story perfect: they are realistic, different from each other, and you can empathize with each one of them. A very enjoyable read, highly recommended!

And I swear I could have fallen to the floor at that ending. I’m a massive lover of character driven stories, and this didn’t disappoint. Real and complex, they felt as if they could step off the page and walk right into our world. Also the amount of representation in this book is truly beautiful. All around Arlo, there’s fear and turmoil, yet the story still takes time to focus on his heartwarming journey of acceptance and found family, which I loved. Unexpected and unique, this debut is a refreshing take on the vampire genre. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My Review: Wow this book was so good. It was one of those where you kind of forget where you are while reading because you get so sucked into the story. I ended up totally binging the second half especially, I found it so hard to put down! I adored Arlo - what a relatable, well thought out character. The whole cast was really interesting and I can’t wait to learn more about them. I thought this book dealt with tough topics like anxiety, mental health struggles and trauma incredibly well, in a very realistic way. Fallen Thorns is so atmospheric, full of intrigue and twists that I really didn’t see coming. AND THE ENDING 👀 I am so excited to see where this series goes and I can’t wait for book 2! Fallen thorns by Harvey Oliver Baxter🤍 Where to even start. I’ve needed some time to process this because…. Wow. This book is absolutely incredible. The plot, the characters, the writing 🫢🫢😍😍. I struggle to put into words how amazing these all were, but I will try. . Firstly the writing, so poetic, beautiful, whimsical. Just 😍😍 The characters: in this book we have an amazing cast of characters. We follow Arlo, but we meet some truly amazing characters. Ben (my fav), Casper, Mars (also a fav), Rani (also a fav), Lawrence, Marianne and that’s just a few. We follow Arlo on his journey after his death but also while he figures himself out. He’s navigating such a difficult time (being in university, the age 19) and the author did such an incredible job portraying all of this and you really feel right there beside Arlo, and watching him grow and learn and just accept who he is, truly beautiful! (Side note: the amount of representation for the LGBTQIA+ community is the best I have ever seen, and it’s so important that there is so much representation!!) I guess I mixed the plot in there with my discussion on the characters. But I will say, be warned when you start act 3 you will not be able to put the book down! I mean I couldn’t in act 1 and 2 but act 3 hit different and I literally couldn’t stop no breaks, just all at once. I truly cannot wait for the next book, like I need it right this second!!!
