How to improve running mechanics and posture: In this week’s edition of our Runner’s Maintenance Program we are focusing on loosening the tight areas that runners notoriously struggle with. It is commonly known that hip and hamstring stretches are crucial for runners, but most runners do not stretch their upper bodies. The left arm works in harmony with the right leg, and vice versa, and if there is dysfunction in the shoulders, it is often compensated for through the spine and hips. Shoulder and spinal flexibility can improve your mechanics and posture, which is especially crucial given that the routines of modern life, such as sitting in front of a computer or constantly checking your phone, tend to have the opposite effect. Along with upper body and shoulder stretches, we will also be working on the hips and hamstrings this week. Our main class this week is a full body class, with a focus on the hips, hamstrings and upper body, and our 2 shorter classes are designed for hip mobility and recovery for hips, spine and shoulders. My favourite restorative poses that make my back go Ahhhhh…☺️ . <1-3> Supta virasana - Reclined Hero pose . As @pauldallaghan puts it, supta virasana is the backbend for lazy people. I particularly love adding a side bend to it to release the deep tension in my lower back muscles. Another fave is to place my hands on the heels, push them to the direction of my knees, and at the same time tuck my tailbone under. This creates a lovely traction deep inside the lower back and groin. . <4> Paschimottansana - Seated Forward Fold pose . My go-to counter pose after supta virasana. For me this pose is therapeutic not only in the physical sense, there’s something about the configuration of this pose that’s extremely calming in a more subtle sense - the face is down which dims the bright light from the outside; the arms and legs form a protective shield around the self, which also helps reverberate the rhythmic sound of the breath 🌊 . <5> Halasana - Plow pose . The sequence is not complete without a little inversion. The heart and pelvis are above the head in this pose, which encourages blood circulation and oxygenation, rejuvenating the body and mind. . <6> Karnapidasana - Ear Pressure pose . Bending the knees from halasana, I arrive at karnapidasana, which creates a more intense and delicious stretch for the spinal muscles. My favourite part of the sequence is when I come down from a 5 minute hold of halasana then karnapidasana. I close my eyes and feel the blood come rushing back down to the lower body; muscles and joints clicking back into place as they settle with gravity. Weekly Recap. Despite many days of continuous ☔️, it has been a great week with a perfect balance of activity & socializing, and slowing down & hibernating. 1. Run-Walk-Run 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♀️ On Monday, there was a brief break from the rain. I took advantage of that and enjoyed 6 kilometers of body, mind, and soul loving movement in beautiful nature. 2. Homemade Sandwich/Toast Sourdough Bread 🍞 I’ve been baking sourdough bread for over a year, and now I have mastered the recipe for a loaf that’s perfect for toasting. 3. Gentle, Low-Back Loving Yoga 🧘‍♀️ I focused solely on moving slowly, mindfully, and intentionally, offering both my body and nervous system the calm and balance they needed, and giving my lower back the release it was craving for. 4. Teaching Private Yoga 🧘‍♀️ 🏃‍♀️ I taught a gentle and slow private yoga session for a lovely lady who is a runner. 5. Cat-cow: one simple yet powerful yoga pose 🐱🐮 Lately, cat-cow has been my anchor in my yoga practice. Not only I can adapt the pose to my symptoms and pain, but it also helps me notice positive changes in my body sensations, uplifting me mentally when motivation is rather low. Poses like cat-cow help correct body posture and build inner resilience, which I needed more than ever when my pain was strong. To practice safely, I focus on maintaining a pain-free range of motion. Here’s how this pose would look like on days of heavy pain: 🐱 CAT - Expectation: Exhale, start with the tailbone and round the back, draw the belly button in, release the head down - My expression of the pose: Exhale, keep my back rather neutral, draw my navel in, keep the neck in the prolongation of my spine because already here I could feel the skin of my back stretching without even having my chin resting on the chest #iykyk 🐮 COW - Expectation: Inhale, point the tailbone up, arch the back, expand the belly towards the floor, lift the chest, bring the head and gaze up - My expression of the pose: Inhale, curve my back minimally (sometimes it felt like “one centimeter only”), open up the chest and lift the head a little, eyes closed Our yoga practice doesn’t need complex poses to feel good; it’s about listening to our bodies and minds.
