Low volume training is the most effective training in my opinion & here is why. Take these two people: Person A โ€ข Trains 5 x per week โ€ข 2-hr workouts โ€ข Highly intense & risky โ€ข Lots of volume (sets & reps) โ€ข No focus on recovery Person B โ€ข Trains 3 x per week โ€ข 40-45 min workouts โ€ข Enough effective volume โ€ข Highly focused + targeted work (quality > quantity) โ€ข Focus on recovery. Now, based off their training letโ€™s assume what each of their strength progressions on the would look like: Person A is training with high intensity, too many junk sets, small rest times & doing 5x workouts a week. Will most likely have little strength progressions, no technique improvements & under recovered. Person B is training with high intensity, quality, low volume sets & focusing on recovery. Will most likely have big strength progressions, technique improvements & can train for weeks on end. Now take these two individuals & think about who is going to have the stronger deadlift resulting in bigger glutes or a stronger bench press resulting in a bigger chest? Always remember that tโ€™s the progress that your making, not the effort your putting in. Training wonโ€™t always be the most exciting or Most of the time, especially outside of intensive meet prep, youโ€™re showing up & doing the basic, semi redundant, building work. There are absolutely ways to stay engaged & derive more, and thatโ€™s important. But you canโ€™t fixate on the brief highs forever, when it comes to long term process. It doesnโ€™t always have to be this huge event that you psych yourself up for & dream of outside of the gym. It evolves and adapts over time, let yourself do the same & embrace what each phase requires of you. Training can & should become a consistent practice, built into your life, regardless of the season- knowing the work youโ€™re doing now is what will prepare you *for* those more exciting, intense times. Once youโ€™re multiple years in, thatโ€™s what most of it looks like. Adjusting your expectations in this way allows you to come into each session with a better prepared mentality.

Progressive Overload doesnโ€™t have to be a rocket science. Copying a pre-made program will give results (until a certain day) if you are an initiated athlete who has never followed anything properly structured. But will this program be appropriate to your goals? So you start inventing and tir too many variables. Iโ€™ve already done that. It sucked - but it gave me experience, although I wasted time. I know, it may seem reductive, but for most athletes, just progress in a variable - you get better control over your progress. (๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต) ๐Ÿงฉ The movement creates unilateral loading through the lower body โš™๏ธ This can be mimicked with a walking lunge or heavy resistance bike erg - whilst not exactly the same joint actions, both create fatigue / stimulus through each working leg which is the goal ๐—ก๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ? (๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด) ๐Ÿงฉ The movement biases knee extension, especially in the last 20* โš™๏ธ Following the same thought process as above, this could be replaced with a low box step down or a machine leg extension whereby the knee extensors are both trained ๐—ก๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ? ๐Ÿงฉ The movement is a hinge pattern, loading the posterior chain โš™๏ธ A good alternative here would be to work through some heavy suitcase deadlifts with kettlebells if the volume is higher, or some loaded dumbbell jumps if the volume is lower/higher intent whereby similar joint angles are loaded Every exercise has the option to be progressed or regressed, and each pattern can be replicated in different ways with different pieces of kit. There is no perfect way, but certain set ups will suit you better. The main goal is to figure out what set up works for you, then run with it! From 275 to 315 squat within 9 days First off I want to give credit where itโ€™s due. While running this little experiment I was taking some herbal supplements. Shoutout to @gregogallagher for his recommendation on tongkat ali and coleus forskohlii for the natural testosterone boost. Havenโ€™t gotten the post-blood work done yet, but can already tell itโ€™s working great! Creatine and betaine have also been helpful in gaining extra muscle mass. Greg doesnโ€™t recommend this, but I was also taking a mixture of ashwagandha whole herb and extract with high withanolide content in the evenings to aid in sleep and recovery. I also wanna thank @clarencekennedy_ The dudeโ€™s a beast, and I was inspired by his squat everyday program he recently talked about on his YouTube channel. In the quest for succulent vegan quads, I decided to try out something similar for myself. The second and third day were the most brutal in terms of soreness, but I made it through in one piece! No knee explosions. I found myself having to do two workouts a day. One mobility and cardio workout and one strength and hypertrophy workout. The extra couple hours of intentional movement was critical to keep my joints mobile and really aided in recovery. At one point I was so stiff I couldnโ€™t even bend my knees or hips. I had to really warm up and stretch to regain the ability to squat into a deep position. However, by the 5th day the super compensatory effects were abhorrently apparent. Never thought Iโ€™d claim 8 sets of 3 at 85% to feel light, but that day the weights were flying. Like Clarence, I would never recommend someone try pushing their body to the limits like this, and I only tried for a little over a week. Regardless, I am extremely happy with the results! Iโ€™m definitely taking some time off to fully recover. Donโ€™t want to risk any injuries. Now Iโ€™m really focusing in on an anti-inflammatory diet and increasing my cardiovascular endurance. Also taking a break from the bitter herbs and focusing on B vitamins and choline to restore my liver.
