I'm early morning herb harvesting with a Magpie for company, he's enjoying a drink and a bath in the fresh water I've put in the birdbath. It's best to harvest herbs early in the morning before the sun causes the sap to diminish in the plant. After harvesting I wash the herbs and leave them to drip dry on the washing line before I bring them indoors to continue the drying process. Lemon balm is considered to be a calming herb that eases stress and anxiety as well as helping gastric issues such as gas and bloating. It has a beautiful citrus flavour that compliments iced drinks and teas. Hazel leaves can be ground and used as flour for baking, they can be used to feed livestock and used in teas and recipes. The hazel leaves have soothing properties and can be used to treat edema, but I like to use the dried leaves in a piping hot tea to treat winter coughs. Hazel is particularly good at easing tickly coughs and sore throats. The tea is mild in flavour and therefore you may wish to add other herbs such as lemon balm to enhance it's flavour. By the way, the message of a Magpie visit is love, luck and prosperity as well as to be aware of and guard against being deceived. A carpet of Lily of the Valley under the trees in the Witch Tree Garden. Lily of the Valley is one of my favourite flowers. I originally planted six bulbs and over the years they have spread and increased their number. Lily of the Valley loves to grow in woodland gardens and can be difficult to grow. It represents good luck, purity and happiness and can be utilised for these properties. As you know, it is a powerfully fragrant flower and it's sweet scent envelopes you as you stroll past this area of the Witch Tree Garden. All parts of Lily of the Valley are poisonous and therefore it is probably best not to plant it in your garden if you have young children who may be tempted to pick the beautiful bell shaped flowers. Better not touch and just admire them from afar. My Moneymaker Tomato plants that I grew from seed have been potted on today and are basking on a warm well lit windowsill. They're a little droopy from the shock of being potted on and should perk up in a day or so. It's a lovely way to spend Bealtaine with my hands in the soil, working with and honouring Mother Nature. I can't wait for them to start producing fruit, nothing tastes as sweet and juicy as a homegrown tomato! Something about the Witch Tree Garden had been bothering my eye, something wasn't sitting right and disrupted the natural flow of the garden. When you see something or even someone everyday it's easy to not see what's right infront of you. I took a walk to the top of the garden and sat quietly in one of the chairs just observing and after weeks of wondering what wasn't right with the flow of the garden two things came to me. The low fence that ran alongside the path was acting like a divider, visually chopping the garden in half and making the garden appear smaller. The other thing is that I need another garden arch to create a tunnel. That low fence had to be nixed immediately. Once removed the Witch Tree Garden opened up and visually worked better as a whole. As the trees and plants begin to grow the Witch Tree Garden will change in form and colour, so this was probably the best time to work out issues like this while the garden is still fairly barren and it's structure is more readily visible to assess. In a few weeks the new growth of the trees and plants would have masked (but not resolved) any issues. Today was magical at the greenhouse as I got to talk on the phone with a local herbalist in training who is planning some amazing things for community garden nearby. A herbology garden with medicinal herbs and plants! I’m hoping to be involved with the project at least a little bit and am so excited to see what comes of it! As an herbalist it was a beautiful connection to make as I had no clue this friend of our greenhouse was embarking on this holistic herbal journey. On that note… I only made two of these boxes for the Holistic Healing Fair next weekend and they’re both so so special. The Witch Tree Garden is shaking off winter. Plum blossoms providing an early food source for bees and chives, mint and lemon balm are rapidly pushing up new leafy shoots while the strawberries are growing slowly in the strawberry bed. This year I've kept the vegetable beds simple planting onions in one bed and lettuce, carrots and garlic in the other bed. I'll be covering the lettuce over as soon as I see shoots, the wood pigeons will devour them otherwise. It's a battle of wits! I've prepared all the flower and vegetable growing beds with large amounts of manure. I plan on growing other vegetables in planters and grow bags, but they can't be planted until March. The Witch Tree Garden is slowly stirring to life. Winter is hanging on this year as I thought it would and living up North means our snowdrops, daffodils and other Spring bulbs come out much later than those in the South of the country, so I have tete a tete daffodils indoors for some early Spring cheer. I've bought lots of bulbs to plant (Constantine approves) and some primroses to create Spring planters. The garden still looks fairly barren, but if you look closely you'll spot Hazel tree catkins, rhubarb sprouting, violet flowers and thawed ponds. Yesterday my gardener's Da came to fix the gate that leads up into the Grove area of the Witch Tree Garden, the wind and wet winter weather had warped the wood and the gate no longer shut, it's seen better days. He made a temporary fix so the gate closes, but we made the executive decision to retire the entire fence, it's been up over twenty years and really serves no purpose anymore. Taking the fence down will open up the Witch Tree Garden and is part of my plans for the garden in 2024. The trees and plants have matured enough to create the separate areas and act as portals leading you into each area. This weekend we met with our friend Sharon for coffee at the local garden centre, of course I came away with a few hundred spring bulbs and primroses. I'm just waiting for a fine day to plant them up. Ah I can feel the quickening of Spring waiting at the door poised to knock and enter! I hope my friends in the UK have all been spared by this latest storm. There's a wee uptick in the wind speed here, but nothing to write home about. It's still oddly warm up North for this time of year, but I was glad of the fair weather which made gathering fallen leaves a pleasant exercise. I'll use all the leaves from the Grove area of the Witch Tree Garden to cover over the vegetable and flower beds. The leaves make a perfect mulch to protect the soil over winter and as they rot down they add much needed nutrients and beneficial fungi. I had several ladybird companions while I worked, they're looking for somewhere to hibernate over winter so I carried them down to the Summer house on my coffee break and they can live in there dry, safe and rent free over winter. Late afternoon grew cold though friends and I was thrilled Lizzie had made a hearty chicken soup with cheese bread for our evening meal. Delicious kitchen witchery and I was soon all warm and toasty again! I've been on morphine for the past decade as a pain management treatment and suddenly my body develops an allergy to it, so over the past six weeks I've been titrated off the drug. The Witch Tree Garden: I was searching through our old photographs looking for photos of my late family to display on our Ancestor Altar at Samhain and I came across these photos of the Witch Tree Garden before I did anything with it. I thought you might like to see how much the garden has changed over the years. I've got the odd planter of flowers, one tree I planted and a teepee my brother built for Lizzie to play in, but other than that the garden was a blank canvas. Young wee Lizzie (who was always curious and creative, climbing up the slide instead of going down it!) and my late old faithful Danny Boy (named after the iconic Irish song) enjoyed the space to run around in, but as Lizzie grew, so did the Witch Tree Garden! I know Autumn is approaching when the old Red Acer growing in 'The Grove' of The Witch Tree Garden begins to shed her leaves. She's the first tree in the local area to begin to lose her leaves like a tall beacon signalling summer's end. The other trees planted this year in the newly landscaped 'The Grove' are still infants, however I was really excited to see figs growing on one of our infant Fig trees! The leaves crunching underfoot, the last flowers blazing their colours and figs on the bough, nirvana. Nature's great sleep approaches and I can feel in my Crone bones it's time to slow down. The theme for the garden the past few months has been ‘feral but/and thriving’. Limited spoons have kept me inside just as much as the heat has, but I was still able to pick my first tomatoes and zucchini yesterday. Find in the Witch Tree Garden: a wee while back I had some landscaping done in the garden and during the digging of a terrace the chap doing the work found this object about two feet down in the soil. Recently Lizzie attended a local Medieval Market and got chatting to the Head of Finds at Derby Museums who was holding a stall at the market. She was very interested in this object and has asked us to submit a finds record to Derbyshire Museums for the object to be assessed and identified. Yesterday I submitted the finds record! I'm so excited! I'd love to know what this object is. Our garden was part of the gardens of Highfield Hall, then before that it was farm land and prior to that a Roman settlement. The blackberry hedge along the fences at the hospital garden were so full of insect life, mostly bees and ladybirds. I took cuttings of the blackberry bush to plant in the Witch Tree Garden in The Grove area. Yesterday a Magnolia Tree arrived from @suttons.co.uk which I'm planting in The Grove area of the Witch Tree Garden too. I've so much work to catch up on but now Lizzie is home I will have chance to plant the new trees and harvest the herbs and vegetables that are fiercely growing! Lus na meala- honeysuckle - woodbine in flower Lus na meala - honey plant in Scottish Gaelic (it has many other names in Gaelic). Only the native one, as far as I know, is edible and it’s signified with its cream and butter coloured flowers. Lonicera periclymenum is its Latin name. The honeysuckle or woodbine (from the OE wudubind - wudu tree, Binden -to bind) or in Scot’s widbin, is one of our most celebrated native plants. I personally love it for its colourful and sweetly scented flowers especially in the evening time. Lus na meala has been grown in Scottish gardens from before 1600. The Ancient Greek herbalist Dioscorides and the English herbalist John Gerard (1545-1612) both speak of its medicinal properties, reporting that it was good for the digestion and many other uses. In Scottish folk magic woodbine can be helpful in warding against harm, especially around May Day, when it was woven into a wreath, placed on the front door and in the rafters of byres. There’s an old rhyme “ the ran tree an’ the widd-binn, haud the witches on come in” and we grow it around the perimeter of our property for these reasons. As is always the case it could be also used as evidence of malefic intent and there are witchcraft trials where healing with honeysuckle was used as evidence. The berries are usually considered poisonous, but have been used to make a type of wine, and to treat asthma and bronchitis. Happy summer soltice! ☀️ 🧡 Happy to have been able to enjoy time out in the gardens, make a ritual meal to my solar deities, and spend some time with divination. Many of my poor sun loving plants were knocked about too much this wet, just a little too cold Spring, and now the normally beneficial companion plants like borage are shading out my tomatoes, peppers, okra, melons, etc. I will have to spend a lot of time this year pruning back just enough to keep the companions still alive, but give my other plants enough sun. -sigh- it feels like a metaphor for the year so far. My Rosa gallica officinalis bloomed today! Her common name is "Apothecary's Rose," and I'm delighted by her vigorous growth this year. I'm keen to do some kitchen magic with her eventually. I admired the flowers in the rose garden while my husband and daughter set up the new badminton set we gave him for Father's Day. This was followed by the most unprofessional game ever, but we laughed and enjoyed ourselves. Tomorrow, it's back to the writing trenches for me! I have to do some revisions before Plant Lady goes back to my editors for a second round. I'm sitting in the summerhouse in the Witch Tree Garden listening to a Concerto of Nature, the swallows at dusk shrieking as they perform their acrobatic insect hunts. There's a group of Bees loudly buzzing in the Foxgloves as they feed for the last time today. There's a Collared Dove cooing in the Acer, a gang of Seagulls arguing and a Blackbird is in full song. For the final act, a Dog barks in the distance and sets off the Ravens and Magpies in an alarm call. False alarm.
