It’s official! Book two in the Forbidden on Fruit Street series is with my editor and critique partners, and I’m beginning plans for book three! I’m envisioning a tattooed biker for the hero, a single dad with a broken heart. If you’ve read She Was Made for Me, he was mentioned briefly as the landscaper who did Kyle & Violet’s backyard. This guy is seriously hot 🥵 That’s all I’m going to share for now! Do you like a hero who rides a motorcycle? I’ve never written one before… . . . #amwritingromance #romanceauthors #romancewriter #romancewriters #romancewriting #romancewriterslife #romancewriterlife #contemporaryromanceauthor #iwriteromance #romanceauthor #romancenovelist #romancewritersofinstagram #romancewritersconnect #writingromance #indieromanceauthor #indieromance #indieauthor #nzauthor #nzauthors #nzwriters #indieauthor #indieauthors #indieauthorsunite #indieauthorsunited #indieauthorsofinstagram #indieauthorsbeseen #indieauthorsofig #indieauthorsrock #indieauthorcommunity #indieauthorlove #indieauthorlife

How much do I love this review from everyone’s favourite Aussie book bloggers! (‘Genius’ 😊🤭) Posted @withregram • @happyvalley_booksread What happens when you tackle the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the round table with Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere and shake it up and write it in modern times? That concept is this clever book. It follows on from Olivia’s previous work of a modern take on history. And I really enjoyed them. To all British people, Arthur ‘Ace’ Penhalagon is a tennis champion but his past is full of secrets. He wants to win the latest Grand Slam and use his fame and celebrity for good deeds. Eliza Rose, CEO of RoseCorp, is using her new position to change the world and when she meets Ace, the flames ignite. His past is a mystery and when Eliza is targeted with online trolling they disappear to a house on the water. But the past is about to catch up with them both and explode into danger and ultimately tragedy…… A stellar tale with masterful characterisation, genius plot and the nods to history throughout are smart. Very reminiscent of the 80s prime time soaps and books of that era. It kept the historical portrayal as accurate as possible and it worked well to bring it into the present Completely addictive, imaginative and creative. Bring on the next historical retelling, I love this series of books! Get your hands on these, they’re great… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 stars Craig’s review #contemporaryfiction #modernretelling #popularfiction #mystery #secrets #read #reading #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #femalewriters #womenwriters #nzwriters #supportwomenwriters #book #bookgeek #bookstagram #bookblog #bookblogger #bookreview #bookreviewer #booknerd #bookworm #booklover #bookobsessed #bookaddict #wordofmouthbooks #oliviahayfield #queenkingace

So today's blog on No Kidding in NZ is about thoughts coming from reading Otherhood: Essays on being childless, childfree and child adjacent. I've only just got started, and I'm so excited already - for the new inspiration I'm getting, and for the reach of the book. This might be a New Zealand book, but as I know from 20 years online, these are also international ... no, even better ... universal stories. You can find my blogpost on https://nokiddinginnz.blogspot.com/2024/05/thoughts-on-my-otherhood.html, or via the link in my profile. #otherhoodbook #otherhood.book #otherhood #nokiddinginnz #nokiddinginnzblog #nokidding #nzblogger #nzwriters #childless #childlessnotbychoice #childfree

We are SO excited to reveal the cover for The Little Lit: Volume One. The image was created by Yvonne Nikolaison from @yvonne_nikolaison_studio and more of her works can be seen inside the May edition (out now!) 🌸 There is a cost to purchasing a digital or physical copy of the journal, but we hope it isn’t too off-putting. We want to keep promoting and publishing our indie writers and artists and to do this, we just have to cover printing and delivery costs 💕 Speaking of promotion, we’ll be posting snippets from our profiles and excerpts of the writing included in this 24-page inaugural edition as the weeks go on - we hope you enjoy! #nzwriters #nzliterature #bookstagramnz #nzbookcommunity #nz #nzbook #nzbooks #kiwi #kiwiwriters #nzwriter #nzpoetry #nzart #nzartist #writersofinstagram #writersofig #artistsoninstagram #nzpoet

Sir Vincent O'Sullivan was the supervisor of my MA thesis on Northern Irish poetry at Victoria University in the 90s. He was astute, hilarious, charismatic, generous, and razor-tongued. We had wonderful meetings as I was researching and writing, each involving a good few minutes discussing my work, another few minutes as he kindly offered advice and insight, and the rest of the time spent discussing the ins and outs of the English department, scandals, the pomposity of various (ostensibly anonymous) professors and the ridiculousness of snobbery in academia. He would give that crooked smile, his eyes gleaming, lean back in his chair and say, "I probably shouldn't be saying this, but..." before launching into marvellously wicked and hilarious anecdotes about literary goings-on, fellow writers, and things he just couldn't stand (there were many). He was scathing about literary snobbery in particular, and supported me wholeheartedly in my desire to steer clear of literary theory in my thesis. For me it was all about the poems, the play of the words, and the politics on the page, and he was my biggest champion. I was awarded my MA with distinction, and that wouldn't have happened without Vincent. What a literary treasure we have lost. I was so privileged to be taught and supported by him. Never been to The Marlborough Book Festival before? Wondering what it's all about? To celebrate our tenth anniversary this year, here are ten reasons why we think you should come and experience it for yourself: 1. It’s all about books! What’s not to love? 2. It’s about writers - the festival aims to elevate authors and, thanks to generous sponsors, treat them to a wonderful weekend in Marlborough. 3. It’s all about readers - that’s you! We’ve created a social event to enjoy in the middle of winter. 4. It’s about conversations - audience members hear the author’s interviewed about their books, their lives, as well as their thought-provoking and compelling ideas and stories. 5. It’s a chance to connect - reading might be a solitary pastime, but when festival friends old and new catch up between sessions the vibe is level, companionable and creative. 6. It’s about variety and choice- a range of authors talk on a range of subjects, fiction and non-fiction. 7. It’s a chance to take a risk and hear from an author you’ve not read before. 8. It’s a chance to play it safe and hear from an author you’ve long admired and to let them know in person when you get your book signed. 9. It’s about the warm fuzzy feeling you’ll get when you learn that your ticket purchases help to support author visits to schools, making it possible for our tamariki to meet authors right here in Blenheim. 10. It’s about good old fashioned Marlborough hospitality and being part of a wonderful Marlborough community phenomenon created by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by an incredible network of people right through the community. Ok, we know we said ten reasons but…. 11. It’s a chance to nurture your creative fire! After hearing from wonderful authors, we’ve had people tell us they had renewed enthusiasm to read and to write. Could Marlborough’s next top novelist be inspired? Feeling excited? Us too! Mark it on your calendar- The Marlborough Book Festival 2024 will be on from Thursday the 25th July to Sunday 28 July 2024. Tickets on sale soon! #mbf24 #bookfestival #nzauthors #bookworm #marlbookfest #litfestival #nzwriters #authors #marlboroughbookfestival #marlboroughnz #books

10 second review: El Flamingo by NZ author Nick Davies. Oh my gosh what a ride! As soon as our main character Lou drunkenly popped that mysterious stranger’s fedora on his head after a night in a Mexican bar, I knew it meant trouble. I mean, I actually covered my eyes and thought “Don’t do it Lou!!” 🫣 Fast paced, full of intrigue, mystery, and lots of funny moments, this book kept me entertained from the first page to the last. Definitely an easy read in the best possible way, the story unfolded and had me in its grasp with seemingly no effort on my part! Gifted book from the author in exchange for an honest review, and honestly, this book was absolutely bonkers and I loved it! Highly recommend. Thankyou so much for the wild ride Nick!! 🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣/5 #elflamingo #nzauthors #nzwriters #nzbookstagram #bookstagram #bookreview

10 second review: Through a Glass Darkly by (NZ author) David Barclay-Miller. *An Autistic Boy’s Daunting Rite Of Passage. Well! If you are looking to read the story of someone who has risen through hardship, this is it. Whilst there were lots of parts that were hard to read, or unbelievable in the way that your mind can’t fathom people treating others this way…there were also bits where you are grateful for the kindness and empathy shown when the right people cross David’s path. This is set in the 60’s and 70’s in New Zealand, where he was raised in a religious cult. We follow David through his schooling, university, and many different kinds of jobs, which often lead him to be in some shockingly violent and damaging situations. The book is sprinkled with funny moments, crazy Kiwi characters and beautiful descriptions of our NZ landscapes. I’ll definitely be starting on Volume 2 soon! *Gifted copy in return for an honest review. Thankyou David! #throughaglassdarkly #nzbooks #nzauthors #nzbookstagram #nzwriters #nzbookcommunity

"For a moment the loss of the letter I had written seemed to be unimportant beside the fictional gift of the loss as if within every event lay a reflection reached only through the imagination and its various servant languages, as if, like the shadows in Plato's cave, our lives and the world contain mirror cities revealed to us by our imagination, the Envoy. " * This is the inspiring, devastatingly honest third and concluding volume of author Janet Frame's (1924-2004) autobiography, covering her formative years. Janet Frame left New Zealand in 1956, on the boat the Ruahine, to broaden her horizons, supported by a literary grant. She was 32 years old. Her short story collection 'The Lagoon' had just been published, and her first novel 'Owls Do Cry' was about to appear. This is a journey of discovery, of places; Ibiza, Andorra and especially London, and of people; Bernard, her first lover, El Vici Mario, her fiancee, and the overbearing Patrick Reilly, amongst others. But this is especially the story of her journey to mental health, with the help of the doctors at the Maudsley hospital in London, and her increasing commitment to literature, resulting in three further novels; 'Faces in the Water', 'The Edge of the Alphabet' and 'Scented Gardens for the Blind'. Janet Frame returned to New Zealand in 1963, and went on to pursue a distinguished literary career. * #janetframe #theenvoyfrommirrorcity #autobiography #biography #1950s #postworldwar2 #thelagoon #owlsdocry #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #travelwriter #mentalhealth #becomingawriter #facesonthewater #theedgeofthealphabet #scentedgardensfortheblind #maudsleyhospital #nzliterature #nzwriters #nzfiction #nzauthor

Today I attended a #nzsocietyofauthors workshop hosted by @kleharivel and featuring author #traceyslaughter who was exploring character in depth! It was affirming to see an author speak about the #actingtools used for #characterdevelopment. Because of my history in theatre, characters have always come easily to me, I can feel and see them clearly in my mind. But one of the things I often fall victim to in my writing is being too introspective. I forget to practice the experience of the bodily when putting words into the page. Tracey was excellent at reminding #authors about how important the physical relationship of bodily awareness is to crafting real and experienced characters. I am excited to return to some of my characters and implement bodily awareness into the page more fully! It's funny, while she was talking, I was reminded of my days workshopping fresh actors in #sheilahwinnshakespeare. I had my cast imprint their characters onto themselves, bit by bit and eventually walk around and interact with eachother. Even at 17, I was very intense about character development for the stage! The play was #titusandronicus and after a few weeks of adopting this technique, I remember a day where we caught our reflection in the window and some of us freaked out because we no longer saw ourselves, but our characters staring back at us! It was both horrifying and exhilarating. Almost 20 years later, #tamora still lives in the back of my head somewhere! I'd forgotten that this could be a useful tool to my writing practice too - I love how workshops reinvigorate creative practice! #theatre #writing #workshops #onlineworkshops #nzauthors #authorssupportingauthors #professionaldevelopment #upskilling #writerscommunity #connecting #exploring #creating #buildingcharacters #tipsforwriters #creativewriting #indepthcharacters #writingwell #explorecharacters #creativeprocess #nzwriters
