Today I attended a #nzsocietyofauthors workshop hosted by @kleharivel and featuring author #traceyslaughter who was exploring character in depth! It was affirming to see an author speak about the #actingtools used for #characterdevelopment. Because of my history in theatre, characters have always come easily to me, I can feel and see them clearly in my mind. But one of the things I often fall victim to in my writing is being too introspective. I forget to practice the experience of the bodily when putting words into the page. Tracey was excellent at reminding #authors about how important the physical relationship of bodily awareness is to crafting real and experienced characters. I am excited to return to some of my characters and implement bodily awareness into the page more fully! It's funny, while she was talking, I was reminded of my days workshopping fresh actors in #sheilahwinnshakespeare. I had my cast imprint their characters onto themselves, bit by bit and eventually walk around and interact with eachother. Even at 17, I was very intense about character development for the stage! The play was #titusandronicus and after a few weeks of adopting this technique, I remember a day where we caught our reflection in the window and some of us freaked out because we no longer saw ourselves, but our characters staring back at us! It was both horrifying and exhilarating. Almost 20 years later, #tamora still lives in the back of my head somewhere! I'd forgotten that this could be a useful tool to my writing practice too - I love how workshops reinvigorate creative practice! #theatre #writing #workshops #onlineworkshops #nzauthors #authorssupportingauthors #professionaldevelopment #upskilling #writerscommunity #connecting #exploring #creating #buildingcharacters #tipsforwriters #creativewriting #indepthcharacters #writingwell #explorecharacters #creativeprocess #nzwriters

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬: Today we’re beginning a new weekly series sharing the set of micros and creative nonfiction works by Aotearoa NZ writers inspired by lines of Katherine Mansfield’s writing. These works were shared as Phantom Billstickers posters in October 2023 as part of the centenary year of Mansfield’s death and published in the December 2023 issue of Flash Frontier. This week’s work ‘[enough]’ is by Tracey Slaughter, whose most recent publications are the short story collection ‘Devil’s Trumpet’ (2021) and the volume of poetry ‘Conventional Weapons’ (2019). ‘[enough]’ refers to Anne Estelle Rice’s portrait of Mansfield, begun in Cornwall in 1918 and now held in the collection of @te_papa Thanks to At the Bay | I te Kokoru, a community devoted to the short form, from micro and flash fiction to short stories and creative nonfiction, for sharing these posters with us! #wordsonwednesdays #inspiredbykm #nzwriter #nzliterature #traceyslaughter #katherinemansfield

I love getting our 1940s book-filled backyard sleepout ready for visiting writer friends. The abundantly talented Tracey Slaughter is arriving soon for two weeks of intensive writing. I’ve made up the bed in a new linen quilt from @foxtrot_at_home and added a little rug and a rustic bedside table from @flotsam_and_jetsam_ponsonby 😴 #thewritinglife #supportingcreatives #aotearoaliterature #traceyslaughter

'Datura, or nightshades, include the devil’s trumpet, a plant with irresistibly gorgeous flowers that are highly toxic. Simply brushing against the blooms can trigger headaches and ingesting even a small amount of the leaves can induce hallucinations or convulsions. Beautiful and imperiling: that just about sums up the lives of the characters in—as well as the reading experience of—Tracey Slaughter’s newest book of short fiction.' 'Slaughter’s prose is biting while at the same time blunt. Reminiscent of Henry Miller’s #TheRosyCrucifixion and Charles Bukowski’s transgressive fiction, Slaughter’s striking stories will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.' With the gallery closed for 2020 we look back at some highlights of the year. In June Starkwhite presented an exhibition of new work by Layla Rudneva-Mackay. ACC bcc Bananas was a deeply personal exhibition that signalled a life changed and a desire to paint during a period of extreme physical pain. Some compositions were direct and explicit, while others geometric or abstracted, presenting bold form against shallow ground in dynamic brushstrokes. Rudneva-Mackay’s tendency to present ambiguous moments offering a hint of darkness and mystery was now fully fleshed, letting fruit become a vehicle for dark thoughts and dark feelings. ACC bcc Bananas was accompanied by an audio work performed by the artist titled Talking to Frida. Alongside the exhibition Starkwhite hosted an intimate conversation for a small group of women from a range of creative and healing modalities. The powerful discussion invited participants to join Layla, poet Tracey Slaughter and medical specialist Claire McLintock in a conversation around the experiences and perceptions of physical and psychological pain, creativity, and finding a way to speak back. A text on Layla Rudneva-Mackay’s recent practice by Sue Gardiner will appear in Art Collector magazine’s ’50 Things Collectors Should Know’ issue in early 2021. Treated myself a liiiiitle too much today, bought a couple of new clothing pieces, but also picked up these two up because I couldn't resist. If I can find the latest issue of @collectivehub magazine I always buy it (because I seem to always miss it) but I also happened to find Tracey Slaughters book 'deleted scenes for lovers'. I have had the privilege of having Tracey as my creative writing lecturer for two years and her tips and tricks were always invaluable. Can't wait to get my teeth stuck in to her book. We should all support local business and artists, so of course I bought the book 😊😊
