It is amazing to see Boh Harris's poem 'The Broken School' โ which won Given Word's Best Poem by Under-16s in 2023 โ included in 'Un poema cada semana' (A Poem A Week), where philosophy teacher Antonio Martรญn reflects on the poem's message and sets challenges for students based on the poem. It was the students of Lรณpez de Arenas Secondary School who selected the words that were the inspiration for Boh Harris's poem and now their words and Boh's poem arrive back in Marchena, Seville, to inspire more activities! A new poem! ๐ This was triggered after I was pondering the synchronicity of life and deathโฆ how, at the exact same moment, one person can be overcome with joy at the start of a new life, whilst another is overwhelmed with grief at the loss of a loved one. Again, it evolved after the first two lines struck me and I just followed it from there. I hope you like it! I know not everyone will, but Iโm loving the writing process! ๐ฅฐ x There sits love A first breath, a final gasp. In the same moment. A beginning, an ending. First beat, final flutter. First steps, last dance. First words, final wisdom. First look, last glance. First touch, final embrace. New life, old memories. A beginning, an ending. Just as every dawn must give way to a dusk, every first must eventually, inevitably, be replaced by a last. Starts surrender to finishes, and farewells follow hellos. Itโs a cycle, repeating. A circle, never ending. And at the centre of it all, there, there sits love. J.C

Waiting for the Dust to Settle The porch offers no respite. Outside and in, the air is feverish. Lazy flies hover the door, which swings open and closed. Again and again. The door unsure in a breeze that had no business being a breeze, washing left limp on the line. A listless magpie scratching clods of dying grass, and Grandma sits on the porch rocking her chair. The door bangs open and shut, over and over and Grandmaโs chair groans. Heat clings clothes to bones and we, with our heads low and hushed voices, loiter the porch taking up space. Little Leila sits cross-legged drawing squiggles with a stick in the dust. More flies hover, wondering if they should be inside or out. The Wellington launch for Katuivei, our new anthology of contemporary poetry written by Pacific poets in Aotearoa was held last night at the always warm and welcoming Newtown Library.
