Waiting for the Dust to Settle The porch offers no respite. Outside and in, the air is feverish. Lazy flies hover the door, which swings open and closed. Again and again. The door unsure in a breeze that had no business being a breeze, washing left limp on the line. A listless magpie scratching clods of dying grass, and Grandma sits on the porch rocking her chair. The door bangs open and shut, over and over and Grandma’s chair groans. Heat clings clothes to bones and we, with our heads low and hushed voices, loiter the porch taking up space. Little Leila sits cross-legged drawing squiggles with a stick in the dust. More flies hover, wondering if they should be inside or out. PI-ety This is the second of two poems which was included in @nzpoetrysociety's latest issue of 'a fine line' poetry magazine, edited by @gail_ingram_poet When I saw that the issue was themed on Science And Maths (Pāngaru me Pūtaiao) I immediately knew I had to submit this poem. The poem follows the "Pilish" format, which means that the number of letters in each word is determined by the corresponding digit of Pi. Confused? Let me explain. The first six digits of Pi are 3.14159... The first six words of my poem are: "Did" (3 letters) "I" (1 letter) "Once" (4 letters) "A" (1 letter) "Digit" (5 letters) "Reverence" (9 letters) I continued the above pattern for a total of 70 words (70 digits of Pi). Pi is an infinitely continuing number, but I had to draw the line somewhere! There are lots of excellent examples of Pilish poetry and prose online, and it's fascinating to see how much diversity different authors have brought to what might seem like a very constrained poetry form. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of crafting this poem and it felt magical to see the words fall together once I got used to the constraints. On our last day in Napier we wandered up the stairs of the @ahuriricontemporary art gallery and met Richard Boyd-Dunlop who gave us a tour of the gallery and his studio. Hearing we were poets and running poetry projects like Given Words, he very generously offered us a bunch of poetry books by New Zealand writers. It was a lovely surprise to find in one of the books, 'Out Here, An anthology of Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ writers from Aotearoa' (@aucklanduniversitypress), a poem by @milfs4minecraft which won the Given Words competition back in 2019.
