I did feel like it took a little long for things to evolve between the two main characters, and maybe some length could’ve been taken off without sacrificing any of the story. Now processing that I finished their last book CODIRECTION BOREALIS: WITHOUT A COMPASS BOOK 4 friends to lovers but HOW | slowburn ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ review | thoughts no spoilers :) ⭐ THE MYSTERY was really good. I couldn't figure out anything and when the knot got untangled I think my brain went to dark places :( 💛 ROMANCE/CHARACTERS By the end of the previous book I wasn't convinced they would co-sail smoothly after redirecting... This book should be called OVERCORRECTION When they act naturally the chemistry is there when they try too hard... not so much Unsurprisingly, they needed paaaaaaages to make significant adjustments. A different romcom would've sped it up with few time jumps and summaries, but no, GA will let the reader go through the maddening behaviour loops with the characters. The reader does get too see what the hell is going on in their heads eventually, but at first, it's a mess. The slow process is killing me. But I appreciate that GA gives the "try & error" in the "how to do a healthy relationship" so much room. It reminds me why I admire people who can do relationships (despite being different in some areas) and why I read this kind of romance books. (Not the fast paced kind with characters who have everything figured out already and just find each other - those books don't do much for me.) 🟡 Side characters: While I understand N&S's relationship I think I miss(ed) something about the relationship with Shaw's parents. I can't figure out how much pressure from them is just in Shaw's (and North's) head or are they actually chill and friendly and supportive. Is it a recent thing or not? Seeing Jadon was so good Seeing Jadon and North bond was a treat 💜 📒 N&S SERIES is definitely not finished. There will be aftermath. I'm avoiding thinking about it to protect myself from diving too deep and from that hole in my TBR. Back with my overall thoughts on the Truly Devious trilogy 💜🫶 Truly Devious Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Vanishing Stair Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Hand on the Wall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall such a fun series! The setting was very unique and all of the characters had such a distinct personality. Books 1 and 2 left on really big cliffhangers while book 3 was able to wrap up everything while still leaving the door open for more stories. Gonna be honest I thought Nate and Stevie had better chemistry than Stevie and David 🫢 Highly recommend listening to the audiobooks for this series! 👋🏼 So it’s been a while (February since my last post) because quite frankly, life got busy, and although I’ve still been escaping into a good book, I haven’t really had the chance to create reviews or spend a lot of time on my socials. Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📚 My recent reads include these two from the Finlay Donovan series. It’s hard to review the second one without giving away the ending of the first book. However, the first sees recently divorced, mom and writer, accidentally mistaken for a contract killer (Like you do! 😳)whilst having brunch with her literary agent. Broke and desperate to pay her bills and fight for custody of her babies, Finlay decides to investigate the man whose wife wants him dead. However, in a shocking series of events - fast forward a few hours - and Finlay is digging a hole to bury a body with her glamorous nanny in tow. 📖 Fun, amusing and entertaining: these books were an easy and utterly enjoyable read and I’m absolutely ready for the third instalment. They are not the most gory or shocking stories, but a lighthearted mystery with likeable and relatable characters. I would definitely recommend them for some easy entertainment and escapism. I mentioned in yesterday's FLF that I love a touch of ominous foreshadowing. Today's line offers up a heaping helping of just that! Unfortunately, we're also getting snoozy syntax that undermines much of the tension built up by the aforementioned foreshadowing. Let's see what we can do to fix it. ... Consider: "Too late, Molly realized her preoccupation with wording the perfect response to her latest dating profile match, Zonks9572, had kept her from listening to the intuition that would have saved her." ... The edit manages to - centralize and clarify Molly's character - establish a close third person narrative voice - foreshadow conflict - contextualize setting (if the story isn't couched in the present, it must be the fairly recent past) ... The edit eliminates mention of "that Monday," which is somehow both extremely vague and highly specific. It also punches up the significance of "preoccupation" by specifying Molly's focus that fateful day. The preoccupation (whatever it is) shows us something about who Molly is, not just what she fails to do. Maybe it's personal and mundane, as stated, or maybe it's securing the nuclear codes. I don't care, so long as it's unique to Molly and specific enough to humanize her. ... Whenever we write from a place of absence (in this case, what Molly didn't do), we ought to balance that with presence (what she DID do). Readers connect to what happens on the page, not what didn't happen. Author, keep that in mind! ... P.S. REVIEW I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in a ending then I was with this one. This book had all the making of a 4 maybe 5 ⭐️ star read and then the ending... Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Synopsis: 18 year old Jill wakes up in a hospital room with 6 weeks of memory gone. She discovers she was in a fetal car crash on her school trip to Italy that left her friend Simone dead. Brought back home by her wealthy father the accident makes worldwide headlines. The police and the world don’t believe it was an accident but Jill knows she would never have hurt Simone so what happened in the last 6 weeks? I enjoyed the mystery of the book I wanted to know what happened and liked how the story was progressing. Jill was a meh character I found her spoiled and annoying but still was interested in what went down that caused the car crash. The ending was so so so disappointing, it’s so open ended to the point where it feels like the author had a page limit and had to rush to finish the book. Although the book was good until the ending I can’t recommend a book where the ending sucked.
