Glycemic Index vs. Glycemic Load The glycemic index is the ranking of sugars and carbohydrates according to how quickly glucose—the simple sugar molecule—is absorbed into the bloodstream. The glycemic index compares the rise in blood glucose caused by 50 grams of carbohydrates—about two ounces—and a particular food to the rise when you eat 50 grams of pure glucose. So an example, pure glucose has a glycemic index of 100. White bread has a glycemic index ranging from 70 to 90. Whole grain bread has a glycemic index in the 50s.  📝 According to this glycemic index model, low glycemic index is 55 and under, medium glycemic index is 56 to 69, and high glycemic index is 70 and above. Unfortunately, this ranking system was found to be problematic because something like a carrot has a high GI and we know that they have many other health benefits. They are packed with fiber! In response to this, a new ranking system was developed to speak to how quickly sugars are absorbed. This improved system is called the Glycemic Load. The load considers the total amount of rapidly absorbable carbohydrates—the starch or the sugar—as well as the glycemic index.  📝 The equation for this~ Glycemic load = Glycemic index x grams of carb per serving / 100.  So, according to the Glycemic Load model, a low glycemic load is 1:10, a medium glycemic load is 11:19, and a high glycemic load is 20 and over. In this model of food like a whole grain or a carrot has a lower glycemic load because the amount of starch or sugar in that food is relatively low compared to its carbohydrate or fiber content.  💜 The bottom line is that if a food has a high GI, glycemic index, but it’s packed with fiber, it will have a lower impact on blood sugar and insulin levels. It’s the fibers that slow things down. Do you have oats in the morning & find you are hungry a short time later? You just need a few swaps/additions to make it more satisfying 💯 Quick oats are on ok choice and better than some other commercial cereal options but I often hear from my clients that their oats 🥣 just don't cut it in the morning and it's usually due to the following: 1. Quick oats 🥣 - are more processed and if flavored, have added sugar so they are easily digested and then hunger starts again more quickly after eating 2. No additions to the meal (ie. protein/healthy fats) means the meal is less blood sugar balanced or less satisfying When we discuss swapping and boosting their oats with some other items, they often report back that not only is their brekky more interesting 🎉 texture/taste wise but they feel more energised/are satisfied for much longer Here’s how you do it… ✅Rolled oats - made with milk or water are less processed, and are lower GI but can still be made in the microwave so they are quick to make. ✅Adding a dollop of high protein yoghurt (i use greek but there are other options) means the overall protein in the meal increases = more blood sugar balance ✅A sprinkle of chia seeds/nuts - for healthy fats which means a well balanced brekky and adds more texture ✅A sprinkle of berries/grated apple - adds a natural sweetness and more fibre The added benefit of this meal swap is that you feel fuller 🥰 for longer and then are less likely to eat more at the next meal = a win for weight management Another TIP: No time to spend doing Brekky oats? Make them the night before, put them in the fridge and then add your toppings in the morning 🌈 can be enjoyed warm or cold plus overnight oats have even more nutrition (but that’s for another post entirely!) Light Shapes Life… Have a weight problem? Diabetic or pre-diabetic? Never hungry in the morning? You have a leptin resistance. Do your doctors talk to you about your diet? And the scientific literature is not up to date on the quantum light story of light and dark cycles controlling your hormones. This might be a lot to read, but I feel like people need to understand the basics of insulin resistance and how to get checked in order to prevent becoming type 2 diabetics. If you have insulin resistance and you will not start doing something about it now, there is an extremely high chance of you becoming diabetic in the next 10-15 years. Your doctor might not be willing to test your fasting insulin as it is not the standard care. The Blood Sugar Rollercoaster Balancing your blood sugar is critical for weight management. Most importantly, balanced blood sugar stops you snacking endlessly between meals! And so the fat loss phase begins… Probably the best head space I’ve been in to tackle a cut and already been playing around with cardio to keep consistent. Initially I wanted to lose ‘x’ weight as I was often told having a goal in mind helps keeps you focused but as someone who doesn’t see much movement on the scale but more movement in clothes and my mood I’m going to let how I’m feeling mentally be my focus. I will be weighing myself but rather than be disappointed with that lack of movement and comparing myself to others, I’ll save myself the pain. Unfortunately with hormonal disorders it is harder to lose weight and is often the case, dieting puts more stress on the body and we become inflammed/ put on weight. Weirdly, when I come out of a fat loss phase I tend to keep dropping weight 3-4 weeks into maintenance - more on why in another post. You may be thinking… "Okay, I get that food freedom can work for most BUT I have diabetes. It's not just food that can spike your blood sugar. And I think this is the part that a lot of people are missing when they're trying to work on regulating their blood sugar or reversing insulin resistance. There are a lot of other things that can raise your blood sugar that have nothing to do with what you've eaten. When you experience these spikes, insulin brings your sugar back down quickly. It's this drop in blood sugar that is responsible for the exhaustion you feel mid-day shortly after lunch, the intense sugar or carb cravings you might experience in the late afternoon or early evening, the 3am wake ups at night, or the lightheadedness or brain fog you feel throughout the day. 😵‍💫 When we learn how to stabilize our blood sugar, a LOT of these symptoms improve.
