Weekends are for pancakes !! These tasty Cottage Cheese pancakes contain 3 healthy ingredients: OATS: A low GI grain, which is high in fibre. COTTAGE CHEESE: A dairy food providing protein & calcium. EGGS: A protein food, rich in choline, amongst other vitamins & minerals. This combination of ingredients is digested slowly, due to the protein & fibre content, leading to a lower rise in blood glucose levels (BGLs). These pancakes can be a sustaining and nutritious base to your breakfast. Determine your serve, based on your carb tolerance at this meal. If your carb tolerance is lower in the mornings, team a smaller serve of these pancakes with low carb accompaniments like nut butter & a few strawberries. If your carb tolerance is higher, you might manage extra pancakes and/or team with other low Gl carbs, yoghurt and fruit. As with any new recipe, create it, serve with accompaniments and test your BGLs to check If this meal combination works for you. Have you tried cottage cheese pancakes?

Well. Some things never change. I had a pretty significant exam today for additional accreditation. This screenshot of my Dexcom was taken immediately after finishing the 3.5 hour slog. My blood sugars before were about 6.0-6.2. Within 30 minutes they were in the 9s and then 10s. I knew it was a stress response. But that didn’t make it any easier. Trying to focus on an exam while trying to navigate blood sugars that can potentially impact your cognition, not to mention completely take you out of the zone, is just another T1D “quirk” Fun-Fun 🙄 Now, please do not tell me that managing diabetes is JUST about managing food, insulin, activity levels, and motivation. Please, don’t go there. Just don’t. #lifeoft1d #girlwitht1d #t1dlookslikeme #t1ddietitian #t1dquirks #diabetesstressresponse #diabetesandstress #fromonet1dtoanother #diabetesdietitian #t1dadvocacy

For the majority of women with Gestational Diabetes (GD), blood glucose levels (BGLs) return to normal after birth. An exception is women who developed prediabetes/ type 2 diabetes prior to pregnancy. If you have any concerns, discuss this with your diabetes team. After having your baby, the structured GD eating plan with BGL testing is no longer required. Eat according to your appetite, situation & preferences. Try to be intuitive with your eating. New mothers need adequate nutrition & energy for recovery & repair of their bodies after pregnancy & birth. Healthy eating will support your feeding as well as supply the nutrients to heal & meet the energy demands for caring for your baby. Life with a newborn is busy & tiring. A little food preparation towards the end of your pregnancy can be very helpful for this challenging period. Stock your freezer with nutritious meals, which can be readily reheated as needed. Swipe for some easy recipes which you can prepare ahead & freeze ➡️ ✳️ Serve your meals with some salad or vegetables. Ready to go salad bags & frozen vegetables are super handy during the busy post-partum period. ✳️ Set up an online shopping or fresh food produce order that can be submitted weekly for handy grocery delivery. ✳️ Be sure to include lots of healthy snack options using ideas from your GD eating habits. Having the fridge & pantry stocked with these options increases the likelihood that you will make healthy choices. ✳️ Recruit support from your "village" with meal preparation, home help, or assistance with baby/other children if possible. ✳️ Reach out to your health care team as needed. Telehealth makes accessing support so much easier. ✳️ You may feel societal pressure to bounce back to your pre-pregnancy shape or feel you need to immediately lose weight/exercise/ restrict your food due to the increased risk of developing type 2 Diabetes But give yourself some grace. Change your mindset to " how can I look after myself in the post-partum period" ✳️ Try to hang on to some of those healthy habits you developed during your GD journey Self care is not selfish. Monitor your future health & seek individualised advice as needed ❤️

As weather cools down, here's a warm, delicious fruit based dish to include on your Gestational Diabetes Menu. At 21 g carb per serve, this fruit crumble could be: ✳️ Dessert follpwing a lower carb meal with protein and vegetables. ✳️ A sustaining afternoon snack. ✳️ A breakfast option. If you add a large dollop (100 g) of thick pot set Greek Yoghurt, add another 6 g carb. Keep the skin on the apples for extra fibre and nutrients. The skin is rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties. Research associates these properties with reduced insulin resistance. Use frozen berries when berries are not in season. The protein is boosted by adding almond flour and walnuts. The fibre is boosted with the oats, fruit, and nuts. This recipe uses low Gl carbs as oats and fruit. It contains 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, which is no different to sugar, but imparts a little sweetness over 8 serves. This combination of nutrients delays digestion, leading to a lower rise in blood glucose levels (BGLS) As with any new recipe, create it, trial it, and see how it works for your BGLs. Note: For those with nut and coconut allergies, replace the 1/2 cup almond flour with 1/3 cup wholewheat flour. This increases the carb per serve by about 3 g. Replace the walnuts with roasted unsalted pumpkin & sunflower seeds. Omit the dessicated coconut and coconut oil and use 1/4 cup of melted butter instead. Have you tried a fruit crumble on your GD menu?

Do you think you would somehow 'feel different' and know if you had Type 2 Diabetes? That is not always the case... Some people can live with Type 2 Diabetes for up to 10 years before being diagnosed. That’s why it’s very important to know your risk of developing Diabetes. - Family History 👨‍👩‍👧 You are two to six times more likely to get Type 2 Diabetes if you have a parent, brother, sister or child with Diabetes. - Age 👵 You’re more at risk if you’re white and over 40 or over 25 if you’re African-Caribbean, Black African, Chinese or South Asian - Waist Circumference Your risk is increased if you have a high waist measurement - Ethnicity Type 2 diabetes is two to four times more likely in people of South Asian descent and African-Caribbean or Black African descent It is also important to recognise the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes (although be aware that not everyone experiences them) - Loss of weight - Extreme thirst - Tiredness - Frequent urination Early diagnosis of Diabetes allows you to be able to manage it more effectively and reduce your risk of complications. Food shopping can be a bit of a chore! However, the choices you make buying groceries can actually make a big difference to your weekly food intake & health. So here's some ideas for your shopping list, to help you be more time efficient & effective with your shopping trip. Some of these foods may work for you, and some may not. Individualise your choices based on your own BGLs & situation. ✳️ FOOD ORGANIZATION: This is my mantra with Gestational Diabetes (GD) as it makes a huge difference. A little planning goes a long way. When the fridge & pantry are stocked with suitable food, it is so much easier to follow your GD eating plan. Discuss a menu with your partner/ family. Keep it simple. See some of the menu ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner outlined in previous posts for inspiration. Write a food shopping list to match. ✳️ SHOP ON A MISSION: Minimise the number of weekly food shopping trips to save time. Shopping online may work better for you.you. Supermarket and/or fresh food markets offer a wider range of options.. ✳️ RECOGNIZE HEALTHY CHOICES: It can be challenging to know what to look for on labels unless it's been explained to you in the context of your individual health goals. Consulting with a dietitian can help you with meal ideas, deciphering nutrition panels, recognizing suitable packaged and fresh produce. If you know what to look for, shopping trips can be less stressful & much faster. ✳️ SWIPE FOR A BASIC EXPRESS SHOPPING LIST ➡️ This list is certainly not an exhaustive listing of the suitable low Gl cereals, breads, grains, crackers, canned goods, milk, yoghurt & convenient snacks to choose from. Here are just a few examples of options available at the major Australian supermarkets. You might prefer to get fresh produce like meat, fish, chicken, fruit & veggies at the butcher or local fresh food markets. As you plan your menu, you might find some of these products will fit into your meals. They are easy to add to your trolley. It's always a good feeling when the food shopping is done and you are organised for preparing healthy meals for your week ahead What would you add?

A bedtime snack offers many benefits for your Gestational Diabetes eating plan. By having a snack before bed, the length of the overnight fast can be kept within the optimal range of 8 to 10 hours. Extended fasts can result in the liver releasing glucose from its glycogen stores for energy, and this can push up your morning reading. Test within 15 mins of waking up or fasting levels can start to rise. 🔆Try a low Gl carb snack with protein to slow digestion and the rise in blood glucose levels. These snacks are sustaining and help supply additional energy and nutrients for pregnancy. Eg Wholegrain crackers with eggs. Greek yoghurt with Peanut butter. Strawberries with High Protein milk. A line of chocolate with pumpkin seeds. Blueberries with cottage cheese. A medjool date with nuts 🔆 Another option is to try a protein only snack to break the overnight fast. Less carb at bedtime may work better for some women. Eg Eggs. Cheese. Nuts. Celery with peanut butter. Chia pudding with coconut milk. High Protein Almond milk. 🔆 Trial a few options. Different snacks work better for different women. Swipe for ideas ➡️ Remember there is no one size fits all! Experiment with different snacks, to see what might work best for your fasting BGLS. 🔆 If fasting levels are trending over the limit, despite trialling different snacks and the other strategies (evening activity, earlier dinner, adequate hydration, optimising sleep) speak with your diabetes team for individualised guidance. This is NOT your fault, but due to strong underlying insulin resistance, which is influenced more by hormones and genetics than lifestyle. Your diabetes team will guide you with individualised GD management for optimal BGLS for the health and well-being of you and your baby.❤️

For people with diabetes, emotional and physical stress can increase your blood sugar readings. When you are under stress, your body produces a hormone called cortisol which can result in high blood sugars. Everyone experiences emotional stress, but it's important to know how stress affects you and how to implement healthy coping mechanisms to reduce stress such as going out for a walk, listening to music, or any other activity you enjoy doing. How do you cope with stress? . . . Para las personas con diabetes, el estrés emocional y físico puede aumentar las lecturas de azúcar en la sangre. Who doesn't love a burger ! Create your GD friendly version as shown : ✳️ Choose a LOW GI CARB: Ditch the usual white bun for a low GI multigrain or sourdough roll. ✳️ Add some PROTEIN : Grilled beef patties or chicken/ fish fillets work well. Vegetarian options could be grilled tofu or Halloumi . Add extra protein with a well cooked egg or grilled bacon. And melted cheese on top of course. ✳️ Load up the FIBRE with lots of fresh salad. Lettuce, tomatoes, grated carrots & sauteed onion rings do the trick. ✳️ And some GOOD FATS and/ or condiments for extra FLAVOURS. Sliced avo or pesto is a delicious spread Try tzatziki or mustard or ketchup. The combination of nutrients in a burger, leads to a slow rise in postmeal BGLs. Not to mention it is an easy, delicious, nutritious & filling meal ❤️ A great Friday night dinner, in fact. With 30 - 40 g per burger, it can work well on your eating plan. Create it, enjoy it and check your BGLs, to see if it works for you ❤️ Have you tried a burger on your GD menu?

Did you know I have a free meal guide for TJ’s!? 🥑 I created this meal guide because I know how overwhelming it can be to navigate what to eat to balance your blood sugars with T1D. After receiving your diagnosis, you likely were given a lot of conflicting and contradicting advice about what the best foods are to lower your A1C. You were probably told to follow a low carb diet or not to consume more than 45g of carbs with your meals which makes everything feel even more frustrating! 😫 For the majority of my diagnosis with T1D, I strictly limited carbs at mealtimes to avoid a spike in my blood sugar (and avoid hearing comments from my educator). It wasn’t until I became a registered dietitian that I realized that lowering your A1C doesn’t have to come from a place of restriction & that it is possible to stay in range while eating carbs! 🥐 When you shift the conversation away from what you can’t eat towards what you can add to balance blood sugars, you will have more predictable blood sugars and an abundance of food choices! 💭 So if you’ve ever asked yourself “well, what am I supposed to eat now?” or “there’s no way I could eat that.” … then this meal guide was created for you! Knowledge is power. When you are first diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, it can feel incredibly overwhelming. There's so many questions in your head. As you meet with your diabetes team, there's a lot to take on board. It's a massive learning curve. However, like any new job, it takes time to work things out. And there will be ongoing challenges. As you learn from experience, trial and error, and asking lots of questions, you will start to get your head around your management. It's a good feeling as your confidence builds and you feel like you have a better understanding of your BGLs & your GD management. There will be ongoing challenges for sure, but I encourage you to keep reaching out to your Diabetes team for support and guidance And no matter where you are in your journey, always reflect on how far you have come. Be proud ❤️

Everyone loves a smoothie !! They are refreshing & nourishing. 🔆 The key to building a Smoothie for your Gestational Diabetes (GD) eating plan is choosing the right type & amount of ingredients. 🔆 A smoothie might be a replacement for a meal if you are looking for a light & portable option (eg, breakfast in the car!). Your meal time carb intake is based on your individual blood glucose levels (BGLs), appetite & activity. This varies between women with GD. Check with your dietitian. 🔆A smoothie could be a nourishing snack, especially if you are hungry & trying to boost your calories. Here are the building blocks. Choose your ingredients. Calculate the total carbs & check your BGLS to see if it works for you. This is not an exhaustive list of ingredients! ✳️ SELECT MILK: Regular milk has 10g carb/ 200 mls. Try the high protein ultrafiltered milk with less carb eg Complete Dairy with 6 g carb/200 mls. Or unsweetened Almond protein fortified milk has no carb. Add yoghurt Greek or non dairy coconut yoghurt. Check the label for carbs. About 4-6 g carb/100g. ✳️ ADD FRUIT & VEGGIES: Measure & add up the carbs in added fruit. When fruit is processed, the Gl increases, so fruit juice alone is high Gl. However, combining pureed fruit with the protein, good fats & fibre found in milk, nuts, seeds & veggies,as suggested here, lowers the Gl of the whole drink. Adding veggies depends on your taste & the flavours you enjoy. Kale, spinach, carrots, celery, beets work well. ✳️ SELECT PROTEIN/ GOOD FATS: Add avocado, nut butter, nuts or chia seeds. For an extra boost of protein, you could add a suitable pure whey, collagen or rice protein powder, with no additives that is 3rd party tested & safe in pregnancy, but this depends on your situation. Discuss with your dietitian. ✳️ EXTRAS: Flavour with suitable spices, vanilla or cacao powder. For bfast, your smoothie might include oats. 1/4 cup raw-15 g carb. This post includes 3 high protein/ high good fat smoothie recipes with varying carb content. As with any new recipe: create, enjoy & check your BGLS. Dilute with more almond milk for thinner consistency. What smoothie ingredients work for you on your GD menu?

5 g fibre/100g. Try a Carman's Protein or Nut Bar. Or have you tried Fodbods gluten-free low fodmap bars that are very gut friendly! Eg, Raspberry & Coconut mini bars ✳️ ROASTED LEGUMES 30 g packs of Happy Snack Company Roasted chickpeas are a high plant protein, nut free snack. ✳️ VEGGIES: Have you tried the tiny Tomberry tomatoes! For those days when you have to rush out the door for appointments, to do jobs, or go to your workplace, it's handy to have available some "grab "n' go" snacks. If you don't take a snack with you, chances are you either go hungry or potentially overeat at your next meal, which may impact your blood glucose levels (BGLs). If you try to buy a takeaway snack from a cafe or convenience store, the choices may be limited or no suitable options. These are the times to grab some convenient healthy snacks from home to take with you. The best choices are: ✳️ Nutrient dense. ✳️ Low Gl with around 15g total carb or less per snack. ✳️ Quick to grab or pack. ✳️ Don't need refrigeration. Ideas in this post include: 🔆FRUIT: Nature's perfect portion snack! Grab a mandarine. Citrus fruits are in season , bursting with vitamin C. 🔆 NUTS Portion packs of just nuts are available in the supermarket . They can be tossed straight into your bag. They contain minimal carb. Pair with your fruit for a sustaining snack.. 🔆 SNACK BARS: Look for bars with low GI ingredients like oats, wholegrains, a little fruit, or nuts/seeds/ soy. Check the Nutrition information & go for bars with... < 15 g carb/bar. >5 g fibre/100g. Try a Carman's Protein or Nut Bar. Or have you tried Fodbods gluten-free low fodmap bars that are very gut friendly! Some happy snaps direct from our ‘chill out lounge’ at last weekend’s @APlusMarket! Located in the foyer of Coburg Town Hall, Eat Love Live set up a safe space for shoppers and stall holders to retreat to when they needed a relaxing moment away from the wild and wonderful events of the day. Michaela from client services, Dr Jessica Green (half of our Dance Therapy duo) and clinicians Marina, Naina, Bec and Jo spent time meeting, greeting and creating with like minded folk keen to spread the message of inclusivity far and wide. One of the ways we encouraged this inviting the A Plus community to share the ways in they challenge diet culture with our clients back at the clinic in the form of an artwork - now proudly hanging in reception! Congratulations to @SamVanZweden on coordinating such a wonderful event and to the A Plus community for your generous art contributions, thoughtful conversations on the day and ongoing activism. #EatLoveLive #yourbodyourway

Adding extra PROTEIN with your breakfast is helpful on your Gestational Diabetes eating plan for many reasons: ✳️ Protein slows digestion of the meal, which leads to a lower rise in post breakfast BGLs. ✳️ Protein helps you feel more satisfied, especially if you need to be quite tight with breakfast carb serves due to the morning release of cortisol, which makes some women more insulin resistant than others at breakfast.. ✳️ Protein foods contain important nutrients for pregnancy: Protein is important for baby's growth. Other nutrients depending on the food choice include: Choline (especially in eggs).Iron, zinc, vitamin B12, calcium & magnesium. ✳️ Breakfast Protein foods need to be quick to prepare, heat, or assemble, as most people tend to be tighter for time in the mornings. eg eggs, cheese, beans, cottage cheese, chia seeds, peanut butter, high protein milk & Greek yoghurt work well. ✳️ Some protein foods also contain low Gl carbs, so remember to include them in your carb serve calculations. Eg beans, milk & yoghurt. ✳️ Choose low Gl carbs: Eg, wholegrain bread, wraps, oats, fruit. ✳️ Determine your breakfast carb serves. This is based on your appetite, activity, situation & post breakfast blood glucose levels. (BGLs). Your dietitian can guide you here with individualised advice. ✳️ Some women can only manage a small serve of carb at breakfast, eg 15 -20 g carb. Others can manage larger serves based on their glucose tolerance. eg 30 g carb or more. Work out what YOU can tolerate! ✳️ Remember, there is no one size suits all. Just because a certain choice shown in this post doesn't work for you, it doesn't mean it won't work for another woman with GD.. ✳️ Carb Counter for post: 1 wholegrain bread: 15 g carb. Low GI Wrap: 8 to 15 g carb. 1/2 cup black beans: 15 g carb. 1/3 cup oats: 20 g carb. 1/2 cup raspberries: 7 g carb. 1/2 cup High Protein Almond milk: no carb Swipe for recipe for overnight oats ➡️ ✳️Adding good fats like chia seeds, nut butter & avo, And/Or extra fibre in vegetables like tomatoes & and mushrooms further slows the meal digestion as well as adding extra nutrition taste & satisfaction. What breakfast works for you?

Hello, hey there, howsit 😊☀️ If you're new to this page, here's a little bit about me: 1. I help people with type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar and HbA1c without giving up their favourite foods - I'm passionate about helping you improve your nutrition/diet with an "all foods fit" approach, rather than following extreme diets where there is too much of a focus on "NEVER eat these...foods" type of mentality. I work full time in the NHS and so do the Instagram stuff and Freelance work in my free time. I've been specialising in diabetes management since 2013. 2. I spend most of my time with my dog Raphael (Raffi)🐶 he moved to UK with me from Namibia, where we both grew up. He's even visited the Netherlands with me - so he has probably travelled more than a lot of people 🤪 3. I'm definitely an introvert and need time alone - a lot!🤷‍♀️ and this makes being on camera very uncomfortable. But we need to do uncomfortable things until they get comfortable- it's all about practice! 4. I don't like cooking very much (so I feel you!) - quick and easy one-pan meals are my favourite! 5. My dad has type 2 diabetes - but he does whatever he wants and very rarely asks for my advice haha!🙈 luckily it's well managed with the medication he takes and by cutting down his chocolate intake 😋 Tell me something about yourself and what type 2 diabetes-related topics you would like me to cover here? 💬👇 I look forward to connecting with you 😊 #diabetestype2 #diabeticdiet #diabeticfood #type2diabetes #t2diabetes #t2dm #diabetesdiet #diabetessucks #a1c #hba1c #bloodglucose #bloodglucoselevels #bloodsugar #diabetesmanagement #bloodsugarbalance #bloodsugardiet #diabetesrecipes #healthyrecipeshare #healthyrecipeideas #proteinfoods #diabetesfood #healthynutrition #dietitianapproved #dietitiantips #healthhacks #foodfreedomjourney #allfoodsfit #moderation #diabetesdietitian #foodfreedomcoach

Some women with Gestational Diabetes (GD) despite a determined effort with diet & exercise, continue to record elevated blood glucose levels (BGLs). This is not your fault. This is due to the impact of the placental hormones on your insulin's usual ability to lower BGLs. Insulin resistance is influenced more by genetics & hormones. Fasting levels may trend upwards. For some, postmeal BGLS may rise, no matter how careful you are being with your diet. At this point your diabetes team may speak with you about medication. If insulin treatment is recommended it is very normal to have mixed emotions: you may be worried, scared, angry or upset that you couldn't "fix" it. This post highlights some common concerns about starting on insulin but the most important advice is to speak with your diabetes team for reassurance with your Individual situation. 🔆 You have NOT failed: Most women have worked really hard at managing their lifestyle. The placental hormones have kicked in & your insulin needs help. It's not due to lack of trying. 🔆 As with any medication it is important to discuss the benefits & risks of starting on insulin. Understand how it works & the impact on your management & pregnancy. Insulin is a large molecule. It doesn't cross the placenta. Taking insulin helps your own insulin do the job of controlling your BGLs. Optimal BGLs contribute to you & your baby's health & well being. 🔆Taking insulin does not stop your body from making insulin. Insulin injections cease prior to delivery. After you have your baby, GD goes away. A very small percentage of women may have developed pre-diabetes/ diabetes prior pregnancy. The postnatal glucose tolerance test is an important test to check your glucose tolerance is back to normal. 🔆 Pregnancy is a dynamic situation. As the placenta grows, insulin resistance increases so it is very normal for your insulin dose to need regular adjustments as your pregnancy progresses. It doesn't mean the insulin isnt working. It means your dose needs review. Your diabetes team will guide you. BOTTOMLINE: If you are requiring insulin speak with your diabetes team regularly for education, individualised advice & support.❤️

Gestational Diabetes can be overwhelming and all-consuming. At least initially. There's a lot to think about and organise. The daily tasks with managing GD are many: 🔆 Testing & recording of BGLS 4/day. 🔆 Food planning and organizing. 🔆 Insulin for some.. 🔆 Reporting to your diabetes team. 🔆 Attending extra medical appointments. 🔆 Fitting in (and finding the energy) for daily exercise. Not to mention that GD management is a huge learning curve. And there can be emotional & physical obstacles along the way. All of this whilst multi-tasking with your family, home, work commitments & life in general. It's absolutely justified to find the workload. challenging & to feel overwhelmed at times. If it helps, call out to family & friends for extra support. Reach out for reassurance about your GD management from your Diabetes Team regularly along the way. Support and understanding are so important during your GD journey. I acknowledge this incredible effort you are all making. I hope you feel proud of yourself. Super mums indeed 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Know that you are doing an amazing job ❤️

Living with diabetes can be overwhelming, not just physically, but mentally as well. Managing diabetes requires frequent monitoring of blood sugar levels, medication, meal planning, and exercise which can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and even depression. It's important to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed. Whether it's talking to a therapist, meeting with a diabetes educator, joining a support group, or reaching out to loved ones, know that you're not alone in this journey. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as managing your physical health. . . .
