It wasn’t my favorite book by this author and I felt like I could see where things were heading pretty early on, but I’d still say it’s a good book and worth a recommendation. If Something Happens to Me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Author: Alex Finlay I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased. My thoughts: Finlay is becoming one of my go-to thriller authors and is on auto-buy. The story opens up with a huge bang 💥 in the prologue and sets the tone for the story. Ryan was harassed for being the killer when his girlfriend, Ali, disappeared five years ago. He had to relocate to a different city and changed his name to leave the craziness that followed that nightmarish night. Poppy was discharged from the military and has taken a job as deputy sheriff. Poppy is refreshing and I hope that we see her in future books. Lastly, we have Shane O’Leary, big time mobster in Philadelphia. O’Leary son is a student at the new academy and the challenges he is facing will impact this storyline tremendously. When these characters intersect into the perfect puzzle, it will have readers on an amazing journey to decode the mystery. The storyline is stretched across three parts. The story has multiple narrators with some past interweaved in. Narrators include Ryan, Poppy (sheriff in Kansas), and O’Leary (mobster) with some other characters with a chapter or two. Even though there are a surplus of characters, once you get them straightened out, it is easy to keep up. The characters were well developed, created with depth, mystery, secretive, and intriguing. The author’s writing style was complex, compelling, twisty, and suspenseful. The characters were built up with the plot being developed in multilayered twists. Then the ending was something I did not see coming and it was absolutely fantastic. Finlay is a masterful storyteller that can spin twists from the twists. The multiple POVs led this story in so many directions it was a little confusing at first to keep up with, but there was definitely one of those big "ah-ha" moments that left me just wanting to know how it was all going to end. I feel as though I mainly listened to this one with the plot in mind instead of the characters, so I wasn't left feeling strongly for any of them in any way, but I feel like that's how I feel with most thrillers. If you enjoy thrillers with multiple twists and an ending you're probably not expecting, I would highly recommend this one! You’ve got some mystery and suspense to start with, and then pure thrill through the end of the book. I was listening to this so raptly that I didn’t even pause to think there might be a twist coming up, and it totally surprised me. I loved there were multi POVs, and the chapters were just the right length for me. I almost think there could have been more to this book, but at the same time I’m glad the pace never slowed. As for the narration, I really liked the narrator for Poppy’s chapters. The one who did Ryan’s was ehhh - just okay. But I really did not enjoy the narrator for Shane O’Leary’s chapters. ESPECIALLY when he voiced a woman’s character- he spoke in a super high pitched voice and I would cringe and pray for it to end. I even started going to the ebook to read those chapters because I didn’t want to listen to him. At least it was multi- cast narration so I didn’t have to listen to him too much. If Something Happens to Me This was my first Alex Finlay and it won’t be my last! Super fast paced, whodunnit, with international vibes There’s multiple POVs so it switches between timelines as well. Definitely made it more fun when you are trying to figure out who is who and which timeline they are on. The mystery aspect of this was great, there were so many great twists. The ending was a little too perfect. But overall I enjoyed this. Recommend if you want a quick, light thriller. Release Day Review 🎉 This is my favorite Alex Finlay novel he’s written. The book opens with two teens on a date gone wrong when one wakes up the next morning to find his date has completely disappeared with her car. All Ryan can remember is getting hit on the head and some men grabbing Ali. He has spent the 5 years since trying to recover and rebuild his life, although he has never been fully able to forget Ali or dodge suspicion from the public. Finlay takes us on an adventure of a tale. There is real suspense in this book. I found it difficult to put down because I wanted to find out what happened to Ali. Her car is found while Ryan is on a college trip and the momentum takes off. Ryan soon realizes everything is not as it seems. Meanwhile, a young deputy picks up Ali’s case and ties to the mob seem to be present. She’s ordered not to speak to a former FBI agent and yet can’t help but be intrigued by some of what the woman is telling her. All of it leaves the reader guessing and wondering how it will all end up. I really enjoyed this book. The audio was super well done. I was pulled into the story. There are short chapters that are well-acted which led to a book that felt action-packed and had my heart racing. The ending is great and feels real to the story. The characters are likable and I loved being able to travel to Kansas, Philadelphia, Italy, and England all in one story. I am loving the thriller POV of law enforcement, involved characters, and mobsters/criminals. I can definitely appreciate a more masculinity spin on thrillers. ‌ I read through this pretty fast and didn’t want to put it down. I was consumed with the plot once I started. The chapters were short and to the point (only way to do for thrillers) and they all ended on a cliffhanger!!!! Which definitely allowed me to read this in one sitting. It also has a nice amount of shocking twists and reveals. There are quite a few characters in this book, but it was easy to keep track of all of them. ‌ Once again Alex Finlay delivers an “WOW” factor read that keeps you fully engaged. I’ve enjoyed all his previous books and look forward to more in the future! With satisfying twists and reveals, I enjoyed this one from start to finish. I especially enjoyed the cast of narrators who added to the immersive experience of the story. Because the story has multiple locations, perspectives, and times, the use of multiple narrators helped me keep track of the complex storyline. This is my first time reading author Alex Finlay. I have seen that readers are sometimes divided on his books. Based on this one however, which I found an easily enjoyable thriller, I will keep picking up more from the authors. This is the fourth book I’ve read by @alexfinlayauthor, and his storytelling ability always pulls me in from the very beginning. I found it incredibly challenging to put this book down when life continued to get in the way of my reading, but I still managed to finish it in less than 48 hours because I was too hooked to stay away for too long. It’s been five years since Ryan’s girlfriend, Ali, was kidnapped right in front of him. She has never been spotted since that night, and Ryan was even accused of killing her by the town he grew up in. There is so much loss embedded in this story—from lifestyles to love to actual lives. Reinvention is at its heart, but it also makes it incredibly challenging to determine who you can trust—and if who they say they are is actually who they truly are. With multiple perspectives, I think I’d have a tough time following this one in audio, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as a physical read! I will say that I guessed the twist early on, but I was still captivated by Alex’s storytelling abilities til the very end. The characters are so vivid and they jump off the page. The multiple POV storytelling in this is brilliant. The moment you realize how all of them connect is just to die for. At the heart of the story are a bunch of really good people trying to protect each other in criminal ways and it’s impossible to not care about them!! A Lovely Lie mini review: As always, Jaime had me on a wild ride the whole time. I did not see the ending coming that did. The dual timelines mixed with police interviews were a great storytelling model and it helped the story unfold perfectly. I was invested from the very beginning and was cheering on Scarlett. I’m proud of where the character ended. Somehow, Jaime Lynn Hendricks writes a mystery/ suspense novel that makes me hug it when I’m done like it is the highest literary fiction. I didn’t read Alex Finlays prior thriller, so I don’t have a lot to compare. This one though is full of anticipation, on your seat curiosity, a twisty plot story, and multiple point of views. From high school story lines, to adult storylines that all stem behind a missing high school girl. Don’t forget the mob is some how involved. More than anything very few know the TRUE story & when it all comes together you won’t be able to stop reading. I throughly enjoyed this story. Thank you @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for an advanced copy! ✨Review✨ New cop Poppy is put on the cold case of a missing high school girl Alison when her car is found in a lake. Her then boyfriend Ryan has been accused of her disappearance since he was with her when she disappeared, sticking to a crazy story that a man missing his pinkie fingers took her. When the car is found, Ryan’s dad calls him to tell him while he is on a trip in Italy. He then sees the man with no pinkies and follows him to get some much needed answers. He needs to know what happened to Alison. This book really took me a minute to get into because there are a few different POVs that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Along with Poppy and Ryan, we have Michael. Poppy and Ryan’s overlap because Poppy is working the case and Ryan was involved, but the Michael POV really threw me. I don’t want to give anything away about Michael because it was really a jaw dropping twist (to me anyways) but the way all the POVs ended up weaving together was so clever. The pacing of the story was great with the different POVs. I was always eagerly awaiting what would happen next with each POV and the entire story was pretty action packed. There was a lot of info that connected with the other POVs, so you need to pay close attention. There were 3 narrators for the audiobook which brought the story to another level. Even the 2 male POV narrators were different. 📚 HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY to If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay 📚 This is the first book I’ve read by Finlay and I am so glad I received an advance copy of the ebook from @netgalley, @stmartinspress, and @minotaur_books. The story is told through multiple points-of-view from narrators in Leavenworth, Kansas, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a couple different countries in Europe. There is a young man trying to move forward with his life after being a suspect in his high school girlfriend’s death, a new deputy sheriff who has returned to her hometown and thrown in the middle of a complicated investigation, and a gangster dealing with difficult situations in his “business” and in his personal life. I’m purposely not giving many details so I don’t accidentally spoil anything, but even though a few of the connections between characters seem random at first, everything does come together! There is a mixture of likable characters and others I didn’t care for, but Deputy Sheriff Poppy McGee is my favorite. I would love to get to know her better in a future book. I liked the action of the story, even when I had to suspend disbelief or wish some characters would have made different choices. There is a long, detailed epilogue to wrap things up, and I’m glad the author doesn’t go the obvious route with everything at the end. 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐏𝐔𝐁 𝐃𝐀𝐘!! 🎉 I was so honored to review this ARC and absolutely love it!! Rating: 4.5 🐾 Thoughts: Wow! What a wild ride! I love Alex Finlay novels because they make you feel like you’re watching a movie rather than reading a book. The fast-paced action, high-speed chases, and twists and turns are enough to give you whiplash. Did I see the some twists coming? Yeah. Did they make them any less amusing? Nope! But the MAJOR twist?!? Oh boy did that throw me for a loop and make me jump out of my skin!! Hats off to Finlay for that one. Having read all of Finlay’s novels, If Something Happens To Me, is his most thought-out and well-rounded one by far. Honestly, the way each character and side plot come together is just *chefs kiss*. What I wanted more of: scenery (we’re visiting Rome & Paris for goodness sake!), action (all his others definitely had more), character depth and background stories, especially for the agents. I have really enjoyed listening to Alex Finlay's books. The narrators Helen Laser, John Pirhalla and Paul Dateh did a wonderful job telling this story. I was pulled into this book from the beginning and it held my attention until the end. I felt like this book was fast paced with some twists and turns. This is a solid thriller with suspense and mystery. The characters were well written. Poppy was my favorite character in this book. The chapters are also shorter so that help make you stay focused on the story easier. If you're looking for a fun, twisty thriller then I would definitely recommend this book! ✨ LAST, NOW, NEXT The last two weeks have been a little chaotic over here, but it’s starting to feel like summer and I’ve been spending whatever free time I can get on catching up on some long awaited reads. ✨ LAST I’ve just finished up @alicewriterland’s GOOD BAD GIRL and it was a solid 4🌟 read! I really love how twisty Feeney’s books are, and this one was no exception. However, I didn’t quite buy how all of the storylines connected in the end—especially Clio’s side of it all. How can you just get over what happened to both of your children and then all live happily ever after, after? It was definitely an engaging and binge-worthy story though! ✨ NOW I’m currently reading two books. The first of which is ONE OF US IS LYING by @writerkmc! This is actually the first book I’m ever reading of hers and I’m so excited, especially because of all The Breakfast Club vibes it has.. just more sinister-y. I’m also looking forward to finally being able to talk about this one with my students because it is ALWAYS a classroom fav. The second book is STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by @liznugentwriter. Nugent’s books are always SO good and so full of intriguing characters. The premise was interesting and I couldn’t wait to see where the story was heading. What did Ali think would happen to her? At times the multiple POVs and multiple locations did get a little confusing, but I enjoyed the way everything came together at the end. I thought the twist was well done, and I did not see it coming. The narrators did an amazing job with the story. I really enjoyed the multicast narration which helped with the different POVs, and everyone had a distinct voice. If Something Happens to Me (swipe for synopsis) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Pub date: May 28, 2024 It’s publication day! This was such a good thriller. It was fast paced, had short chapters, and pulled you in immediately. I did not want to put this book down, it was so addicting. The story is told in multiple POVs and it takes a little bit to see how they all connect but when it was revealed, my mind was blown. I had no clue this was going to have so many twists. You really never know what is going to happen next and when everything comes together 🤯 I found it easy to follow, even among the multiple POVs, it really kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. This was a really fun, enthralling, action packed thriller that will have you second guessing everything. If you’re looking for a thriller to leave your jaw on the ground and twists coming from every which way, I highly recommend this one! “What did you think was going to happen to you, Alison Lane?” Whew, this book was a wild ride! From the very first page, I was completely hooked and on the edge of my seat. We have so many action-packed sequences, snappy character introductions, and addictive short chapters that make this book so incredibly easy to keep reading long after you wanted to turn in for the night. I think Alex Finlay’s skillful storytelling really shines through with his characters. I absolutely loved the multiple POVs. We bounce from law student Ryan in Italy, to sheriff’s deputy Poppy in Kansas, to mobster O’Leary in Philadelphia. Each story is so interesting and I literally gasped out loud when it was revealed how they all come together. One thing I thought Alex Finlay did beautifully was humanizing and evoking a sense of empathy for all these characters. Most of them have done bad things, yet it was clear they weren’t bad people. I’m not condoning their actions, but at the very least, you can understand WHY they did what they did. These are well-thought out characters that were tastefully written. This book gets a well-deserved 5 stars from me. If Something Happens to Me hits shelves today!! I was lucky to receive the audio version early from NetGalley and was pleased to discover an ensemble cast (my fave!). The plot twist that occurs about 60% into the book was a surprise that snapped me back to attention when I was starting to find the audio version a bit tedious to follow (so many characters in separate locations with seemingly separate individual stories). At that point, it was difficult for me to stop listening until the very end! I paired this mystery with a new-to-me cocktail called a Red Poppy, in honor of the delightfully named character, Poppy McGee. In a shaker with ice, combine 1 1/2 ounces vodka, 1/2 ounce triple sec, and 1/2 ounce homemade raspberry syrup, then squeeze in half of a lime. Shake and strain into a pretty glass! It’s not immediately clear how and when the stories will intertwine, but that is part of the intrigue reading this book. There are a lot of secrets that are revealed throughout the mystery. I actually found Shane O’Leary’s story to be the most engaging, in part because I simply didn’t know where it would go. Poppy is the most likable character in the book, and being from the same town leads to some uncomfortable connections to the case that she didn’t expect. Fans of Finlay who like a good mystery will enjoy this! The audiobook is the way to go—it helps keep the threads straight since each has a unique narrator. Out now! 🎧 Thanks to @macmillan.audio for the gifted audiobook 🎧 Intricately plotted and compulsively readable, If Something Happens To Me is a twisty missing girl mystery and I couldn’t get enough! While I guessed some of the twists, I was eager to keep reading to see where the story was headed and how the author would tie everything together. It’s set in various cities across the world, which is fun and different for a missing girl mystery. My biggest hang up with the book is that so much of the mystery’s unraveling happens due to chance. After a while, favorable outcomes start piling up, distracting from the reading experience and disrupting the emotional resonance of the story. If this bothers you, I’d recommend skipping this one. Otherwise, the complex plot, compelling characters, and interesting locales make it worth picking up. 🎧: We get various POVs throughout the story, voiced by 3 different narrators. The female voices are performed by Helen Laser, who I LOVE! She does a wonderful job here bringing them to life. The two male narrators are new-to-me voices, but I’m not sure I noticed a difference between the two, except when we got one right after the other. Finlay writes well and tells compelling tales, and this novel is no exception. Although Finlay is an excellent writer and storyteller, the construction of this book can be challenging to follow. For this reason, this reviewer rated the book four stars instead of five. However, Alex Finlay continues to be an author to watch on this reviewer’s favorites list, and I look forward to reading his next book. Alex Finlay’s latest thriller is true to his style, short chapters, fast paced storylines & ample characters. I enjoyed the way that this books kept me on my toes & was a fairly quick read & listen! I struggle a bit when it comes to the number of characters, similar names and/or in this instance different names for the same characters. I think that was the main reason why I rated it a 4⭐️. A personal preference of mine in books, especially thrillers, would be to have less characters because I find that a lot of my mental energy then is spent on figuring out who is who, rather than paying attention to various details of the storyline. I appreciated how this book brought in different layers of complexity in many different ways, crossing timelines & geography too! The way Alex Finlay writes about the settings & locations in his books with such attention to detail is definitely a strength as well! If Something Happens to Me ✉️ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Thriller, Suspense Pub Date: May 28, 2024 Five years ago Ryan’s girlfriend Ali disappeared without a trace, and he was left behind with no memory of the event. When her car is recovered years later with two dead bodies and a cryptic note labeled, “if something happens to me” Ryan will do anything it takes to figure out where Ali went, and what happened after all these years. Alex Finlay proves once again why he is one of my absolute top authors 🏆 Right from the prologue I was hooked. The story is told from three main character’s perspectives, however how they all are connected isn’t quite clear. How they end up intertwining was perfection. I really enjoyed the mobster perspective, the dirty doings of the O’Leary crime family was so entertaining to follow. I was able to piece clues together as I went along and would just shout in my head “I KNEW IT!!!!” as twists were revealed. While I typically don’t love being able to predict twists, in this case I didn’t mind one bit and had so much fun and satisfaction figuring it out correctly. And boy did this one have me on the edge of my seat, and even had my heart racing. I stayed up past my bedtime (which trust me is RARE) to squeeze in a few more chapters. Finlay make take my award for favorite thriller of 2024 🙌🏼 💭: What time of day is your typical reading time? you can change anything except your past 👀 if something happens to me by alex finlay 💙 thank you @macmillan.audio for the advanced copy, out today, 5/28! the tension had me on the edge of my seat between the unfortunate bullying and mob torture to abductions and murders throughout the five year timespan. man oh man, this was a WILD ride from start to finish & the short chapters made for a fast paced read. I loved how this took place in Italy and France, but also in a small town in Kansas 🌾 having multiple POV’s added a unique perspective. I LOVED being in the mind of poppy mcgee. there were a BUNCH of characters but the cliffhanger chapter ends & smooth transitions, merging the varying storylines, made for an easy reading experience. this was more of an action packed thriller than a mystery as I felt like I was watching a predictable movie. I listened to this on audio courtesy of @macmillan.audio and really enjoyed it. This one is super twisty and had a lot of turns that I hadn’t even considered! . . This is my first book by Finlay and I found myself struck several times by how developed the characters were, and how well crafted the story was. Everything fit together perfectly and it felt like no loose ends were flapping around. The writing was great, and I will definitely be checking out more from this author. . . With multiple narrators and multiple POVs - audiobooks can get confusing. If Something Happens To Me was perfectly done on audio and I had a clear idea of what was happening at all times. I didn’t have to rewind to the beginning of a section a single time, which has to be a new record for me. 😅 Shout out to @hlaserwolf , @john.pirhalla , and Paul Dateh for the superior narration!! . . Check this one out if you like thrillers, mysteries, suspense, and crime procedurals! . . This one is out today! #MacAudio2024 Woooo! This was twisty! And the execution was really done - plot holes who? I don’t think I really saw anything coming. I had a literal jaw drop moment (or two). I had fun with this one and found it quite entertaining. I enjoyed the procedural elements as they weren’t TOO procedural. Plus, Poppy was just great. There were a lot of characters and some were more interesting than others. A lot of characters meant a lot of narrators for this one, and they were great! The Ryan narrator though should not do British accents though lol 😬 Overall I liked and would definitely recommend! READ IF YOU LIKE: the comps I want to make will give things away 😂

*Review* If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay I love the fast paced, twisty ride that Alex Finlay takes readers on. It seems like the story makes no sense, we have different time lines and characters in different places that just don't seem to connect until suddenly it all falls into place. I have been recommending this one non stop for the last few weeks. It is a little over the top, but it’s a page turner and as I always say, I am here to be entertained and I was. Ryan was accused of his girlfriend Ali’s murder, but he knows someone else was there night, yes there wasn’t enough evidence but his life has been a nightmare since. Poppy has returned to her small home town in Kansas as deputy sheriff but clues to an old case fall into her lap. Then the mob boss of the Philly, Shane, mourning the loss of his son. These characters from different situations and backgrounds wind up entangled in a wild story. If you are looking for a good thriller, pick this one up! If Something Happens to Me is an exhilarating, fast-paced thriller told from several different POV. We travel all around the U.S. and Europe trying to solve a presumed (no body was initially found) murder, with new information that's become available. This new information provides more questions than answers, and comes with renewed danger. I listened to the audiobook, and I enjoyed the different narrators. Having more than one narrator added to the cinematic, dramatic aspect of the book. Each narrator did a great job telling the story and distinguishing when they were portraying different characters. I am a huge fan of audiobooks, but I don't always think to request them on #NetGalley, so I am glad that I saw a post on Alex Finlay's Bookstagram about the audiobook being available on NetGalley. All the traveling around the world was fun. (Well, some places more so than others. Obviously, virtual travel to Leavenworth, Kansas wasn't as exciting as to Montepulciano and Paris 😆.) I highly recommend this book to fans of thrillers who enjoy multiple POV and locations, which for me, added to the excitement. The cipher element also added an intriguing layer to the mystery.
