Glorious long slow walk in the heat yesterday, with the intention of gathering much Hawthorn blossom. Took hours as all the blossom was either gone over or way too high to reach. Completely forgot about it, immersed into green canopy and bird song, then almost home a long hedge swathed in fresh blossom at perfect height was waiting. Bliss having your nose immersed in this beauty, blossoms falling all over you from higher up and thinking of the supportive, heart opening and holding medicine she brings to us. So much appreciation and awe of our plant friends 🙏 this will be part of a new batch my loving hug tincture blend. One of my favourite spring blossoms, blackthorn, can be found in hedgerows, woodlands, and gardens. Flowers: are creamy white, with five petals and visible reproductive parts. They are found clustered along the thorns and bloom in March to April and can be eaten. They have a slight almond taste. Spring is finally here and the wild spring greens are coming out in FULL force! Now is a perfect time to go out foraging and collect a tasty hedgerow salad to add to your usual spring dishes! 🥗 🌱 I found all of these edible plants within 20 minutes of a local dog walk. Spring Nests. This is the twiggy project that I’ll be rambling on about on Toby Buckland’s BBC radio show this morning. I took a handful of birch twigs approx 3ft long and split into three piles, with one length set aside to bind later. I made three sizes of loosely woven rings and then stacked from the smallest on the base, then medium then largest on top. Then I just bound the three rings together using the last set aside length of twig, ‘stitching’ them together. Happy Mothering Sunday to all Mothers, Godmothers, Grandmothers, Fostermothers and those who give the love and support of a Mother figure. If you’re planning a walk today with small people who need a ‘buck up’ then try making a twig wand. Choose a sturdy but pliable stick from the hedgerow approx 3 feet long. Start at the tip and make 4 equal bends, leaving at least twice the length of a bend for the ‘handle’. Bend the tip section to make a figure 4, then bend the next section up to the left to make the next point, and finally down across the back of the star to complete the final point against the handle stem. I’ve tied this off with a sturdy piece of grass and then tucked some foliage and dainty flowers into the grass tie. A great distraction for flagging walkers of all ages! I’ve been scanning the ground this last week, looking for edible greens in quantity. I haven’t foraged much in recent years as the garden has always fulfilled our needs, and then some. . Obviously there’s nothing in the garden this year, but every cloud has a silver lining, and this year that silver lining is weeds. Sheep sorrel, cow parsley and nettles… some of this basket load is headed into a barley risotto this evening, and the rest saved for tomorrows dinner. . Hazel hearts: My goodness these have turned out to be fun and useful. Fresh Hazel; cut in January and early February - whilst the sap is low and the woody, single-season rods are flexible. The first time I formed a heart, I bound it with wire - a lot of wire, to keep it in a tight shape to mitigate the slight shrinkage as it cured. Next iteration - a small cable tie. Now I can tighten the tie as the wood cures - a eureka moment. Third iteration - dried flowers were perfect attached at the tie point, but what about a teeny jar? Well reader, it worked a dream and now those hearts will make superb hanging decorations with a fresh posy in the jar. Pew end potential? You may be lucky enough to find hazel that is still standing proud from the top of the hedgerow near you? We have to beat the farmer’s hedge-cutters! I popped a tutorial on my stories just a couple of weeks back, but the main tips are : ~Cut early in the year so that that flexibility is guaranteed. Only a short window for this! ~Cut a meter in length and no thicker than your finger. ~Use a cable tie to fasten, and tighten as the wood cures. The next bit is up to you! How would you decorate your hearts? This hedge is only a little over five years old and already a rich source of food. With these tasty morsels lurking it’s no surprise I’ve seen blackbird, redwing and fieldfare in the hedgerow this morning. Yesterday I collected sloes from the blackthorn bushes in the hedgerow. - Feels a bit like an extreme sport cos those spikes are lethal. But brave of heart and in anticipation of future alcoholic beverages (!) I pushed on in the rain!🤣 - The sloes are surprisingly soft after the recent first frosts but I’ve popped them into the freezer overnight to help simulate a cold spell. I believe this helps make the fruit sweeter. These beautiful apples, which I believe are local Braeburn, were gleaned by the volunteers from @stillgoodf They are not perfect in size or shape but taste delicious! It makes me sooo angry that our British farmers are having to ‘give away’ food so that it’s not wasted but are losing money in doing so! 😡 How can they survive? Why are we importing tasteless, long stored and inferior tasting apples???
