Wonderful willow - symbolising rebirth and also known as the tree of immortality due to its gift of regeneration as if a bough falls onto damp ground, it will likely root. Spring Nests. This is the twiggy project that I’ll be rambling on about on Toby Buckland’s BBC radio show this morning. I took a handful of birch twigs approx 3ft long and split into three piles, with one length set aside to bind later. I made three sizes of loosely woven rings and then stacked from the smallest on the base, then medium then largest on top. Then I just bound the three rings together using the last set aside length of twig, ‘stitching’ them together. Happy Mothering Sunday to all Mothers, Godmothers, Grandmothers, Fostermothers and those who give the love and support of a Mother figure. If you’re planning a walk today with small people who need a ‘buck up’ then try making a twig wand. Choose a sturdy but pliable stick from the hedgerow approx 3 feet long. Start at the tip and make 4 equal bends, leaving at least twice the length of a bend for the ‘handle’. Bend the tip section to make a figure 4, then bend the next section up to the left to make the next point, and finally down across the back of the star to complete the final point against the handle stem. I’ve tied this off with a sturdy piece of grass and then tucked some foliage and dainty flowers into the grass tie. A great distraction for flagging walkers of all ages! The Pot a fleur that I mentioned yesterday on Toby Buckland’s morning radio show. I used two elastic bands to hold my twigs in place (but I also used some pot tape for extra security due to the organic shapes of the lichen covered twigs).
